The medieval town of Shrewsbury is the truly historic heart of Shropshire, with nearly 700 listed buildings in a town of just over 70,000 people. With such a striking skyline and such fine examples of 15th-century construction techniques, it’s no surprise that your home is another architectural marvel. This terraced house has been completely refurbished in a superbly modern fashion. Our favourite spot has to be the bright and airy open-plan living space. With its wonderful bi-folding doors, this clever design essentially removes the wall between your home and your south-facing courtyard garden (perfect for the unpredictable English weather). Mid-century furniture looks stylish in the lounge, while the roll-top tub up in the master en-suite brings a vintage edge to proceedings. For more on local history, take a stroll through town to reach Shrewsbury Museum & Art Gallery in just eighteen minutes. Another fantastic walk is along the River Severn. Your home is just three minutes from the riverbank, from where you can follow it all the way across the border to Wales. It’s definitely one for experienced hikers with a strong pair of boots though, at just over ten miles away.

Converted from a hayloft in a Victorian stable block, original features like the wooden beams and porthole windows give the space a unique and rustic character. But you’ll still find plenty of modern comforts – the master bedroom features a walk-in dressing room, there's a charming Juliet balcony that opens the living room up to the treetops and there's a new log burner for staying cosy no matter the weather. Spend your days exploring the area – the city of Ludlow is only a short ten-minute drive away and boasts a castle and charming market, and there are plenty of hiking trails through the hills to add to the itinerary. When you arrive back home, run a bath fed from the local spring and put together a meal in the sociable kitchen. There's even a private cobbled courtyard to sit out in on warm evenings. If you're lucky, you'll catch sight of the swifts and swallows that nest in the area.

This grade II listed Georgian House in Ludlow is everything we look for in a quiet village getaway. Rebuilt and lived in by former glove makers from the late 1600s, this home is steeped in history, dating back to the Civil War – and doesn't it show. There are heaps of original features to these cosy digs. We especially love the handmade oak doors, wood beam ceilings and intricate fireplace that have been professionally restored by master craftsmen. While these period features add interest, the comfy living room is our favourite spot, with its realistic optimyst stove and large L-shaped sofa. Toast up those toes in front of the fire with a good book and a glass of wine in hand – you'll feel all warm and homely in no time at all. Step outside of this 17th-century building and explore one of the loveliest market towns in England that's positively brimming with listed buildings, medieval castles and striking churches. Take a short twelve-minute walk up Corve Street to the town centre and explore this historic place for yourself.

Despite this functional heritage, you can safely banish any thoughts of cramped living quarters. Illuminated by a series of skylights, guests get access to a recently refitted kitchen that is plenty big enough for cooking up hearty dinners, as well as a lounge with comfy furnishings for sprawling out upon after long country walks. There is no shortage of outdoor pursuits to undertake in North Shropshire and just across the Welsh border, including wandering along the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, only twenty-four minutes away in the car. We're happy to say that the home's living quarters are just as romantic, with wooden walls, floors and ceilings lending the feel of an Alpine ski chalet, and the fireplace only adding to this sense of cosiness. The French doors bring in plentiful amounts of natural light and also have the added benefit of looking out to the private garden, which even features a waterfall.

When the weather permits, it's easy to pass hours out in the open air thanks to the seating on the covered terrace and the barbecue ready and waiting for summer feasts. You're also spoilt for choice when it comes to nearby locations for bracing rambles, as the home sits on the edge of the Shropshire Hills AONB. Stokesay Castle is five minutes' drive down the road, while the charming country town of Church Stretton is ten minutes in the other direction.

Located on the edge of the main square, you're going to struggle to find a more central home than this renovated townhouse in Shrewsbury. Step out your front door and you're surrounded by restaurants, shops and a cinema in a Grade-I listed Elizabethan building.

Rather impressively for an address with such a prime position, this home is huge and can quite easily accommodate large groups. The building is split into three separate apartments on each floor, which adds a welcome degree of privacy for families travelling together.

The design throughout is fresh and contemporary, with discernible mid-century influences visible in the furnishings. That being said, a few period features have been retained in the interior's modernisation, including embellishments on the ceiling, large sash windows and opulent fireplaces — sadly only ornamental, but still pretty nonetheless.

When it comes to seeing a little more of the historic market town, Shrewsbury Castle is seven minutes' walk in one direction and the riverside parkland in The Quarry is five minutes by foot the opposite way. The surrounding county is full of unspoilt countryside and you can drive over to the Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in just under twenty minutes, too.

Found in the middle of five hundred acres of woodland and farmland in Middle England, this home in a former stable block and servants quarter has all the necessary ingredients for a truly restorative rural getaway. A log burner stove in the living room? Check. A rolltop bathtub for long bubbly soaks? Yup. A walled garden where you can watch birds flutter past as you drink coffee? That, too. There's even a formal dining room painted in a vibrant shade of blue that feels like a nod to the building's century-long history. Of course, there might be days when you're not in the mood to cook, in which case the town of Market Drayton and its collection of restaurants sit only twenty minutes' walk away. The Hawkstone Park Follies are well worth a visit too and can be reached in just over twenty minutes by car.

Guests can also access a larger, less private, courtyard which offers a perfect sun trap from which to enjoy the summer's sun. All around the farm, you'll find peaceful places to relax and explore – over by The Orchard there's a spot for children to play freely and there's even a barbecue area in an adjacent field. Between the cottage space, additional accommodation, expansive farm grounds and surrounding fields, this dreamy location is a suitable address for group retreats or workshop weekends amongst other things.

Laid out over two floors, this petite pad puts you in a great position to explore Shrewsbury’s historic sights with the town centre a ten-minute walk away and plenty of pubs just a stone’s throw from its door. While the functional decor isn’t the most inspiring, the small patio garden is a nice touch and the sofa bed offers flexible sleeping arrangements, with the possibility of accommodating an additional two guests. Free on-street parking is a bonus, and Shrewsbury train station is a fifteen-minute walk for easy travel links.
