Renovated to the highest standards by the current owners, this gorgeous former rectory is the perfect place for a large family retreat. Dating back to the seventeenth century, the home is built from local honey-coloured stone and faces south across the Somerset countryside. Seven acres of grounds are dotted with chestnut trees and rolling lawns, while there’s also a children’s play area, a heated swimming pool and a croquet lawn, so there's no risk of running out of things to do. During the summer, the terraces are particularly inviting, while the clear skies provide fantastic stargazing opportunities come nighttime. Meanwhile, in winter, the thought of a brisk walk followed by lunch at the local pub is hard to resist — heading straight north from the property will get you to the pretty brooks that run off the River Cary, while the nearby villages of Corton Denham and Babcary are both home to excellent watering holes. The idyllic market town of Castle Cary is a ten-minute drive away, and just beyond that lies Bruton, which has been quietly remaking itself as a haven for artists, foodies and creatives. Located between the two towns, The Newt in Somerset is an extensive country estate, complete with fascinating cider-making and gardening exhibits, a Roman villa museum and plenty of parkland to explore.

A lot of time and thought has been put into converting the historic chapel that is now The Burrow. Nestled in a tranquil spot of countryside surrounded by rolling hills, the space feels authentically rustic but still comfortable and elegant. The tall arch windows provide floods of natural light and beautiful views of the landscape, including the inviting (and heated) swimming pool. While remote location would be difficult for guests without a car, it also makes it a great spot for a romantic getaway.

Part of a manor that dates back to the sixteenth century, this beautiful listed barn conversion is not your average country cottage. With enough design credentials for a magazine spread, the home mixes old and new with aplomb. Gather in the grand room to see a space with cathedral-like ceilings and antler chandeliers, with pops of bright modernity from the aquamarine walls and huge pieces of artwork hanging on the walls. There are cosier spots too, including bedrooms that have been tucked up in the rafters ensuring a snug night's sleep, as well as a log-burning fire in the second living room. From the moment you see the grand stone exterior and cobbled courtyard, you’ll know that this ever-so-charming home is steeped in history. It's a former malthouse that’s over 300 years old and filled with traditional features. When you step into the entrance hall, you’re entering through the large oak door onto the original cart-way, and as you start trying to choose which bedroom you want to lay claim to, you’ll be winding your way up a turret stairway with rope bannisters, surrounded by wooden beams and original fireplaces. The interior has been fully renovated, with a modern handmade kitchen, squishy sofas, and cute-as-a-button bedrooms. Sip your afternoon tea perched on the sunny window seat with a good book in hand (there's an extensive collection to choose from), while gazing at the expansive green views of the playing fields and village church in the backdrop. Elsewhere, the large 14-seater pine dining table will be the perfect spot to savour a slow dinner with the entire group. Although in the garden you'll notice a patio, complete with outdoor furniture, that’s ideal for wine and cheese nights – there's a large lawn and a range of outdoor games available too (including table tennis) for hours of early evening fun. You don’t have to go far to continue the historical theme, as the pub next door is one of the oldest in the country and has been the resting place for many a monarch visiting the area since the 15th century. The surrounding county town, Frome, just a fifteen-minute drive away, was voted one of the best places to live in the UK - explore the rich history, shop at independent boutiques, buy fresh produce at the local market or dine at one of the many eateries dotted around nearby.

We love the character features, such as the exposed oak frame, inglenook fireplace, and flagstone floors. Whip up some lunch with organic ingredients from the gardens in the hand-built kitchen and then dine in the beautiful garden, surrounded by an array of pretty plants such as wisteria and guauras. Or let your hosts arrange for their chef to provide tasty picnics, afternoon teas and fine dining suppers. This home is ideal for those wanting privacy – there's an oak-framed annexe which has a ground floor bedroom and bathroom.

As an optional extra, adjacent to the cottage, an old bull-pen has been converted into a charming open-plan studio – it's an ideal tranquil space for yoga, meditation, writing or painting.

Comfy blue sofas sit in front of the old hearth, now home to a wood-burning stove, and the kitchen is blissfully modern yet retains a country-style charm. Tuck yourself away in the family snug, set around the big TV for a movie night. Or, head outside and make the most of the fabulous grounds. The cottage itself has a private space with a wood-fired hot tub overlooking the fields and a big outdoor dining table for sunny evening barbecues. The surrounding landscape provides miles of stunning countryside to explore either by foot or bike, and local produce and wholesome meals can be found in pubs and grocery stores in the nearby town.

Set on a quiet country lane, this 17th century, Grade II-listed farmhouse makes a wonderful holiday retreat in the heart of rural Somerset. Traditional features of the home have been partnered with luxurious interior furnishings, that maintain a high quality and provide excellent comfort for a snug stay in the countryside. We particularly love the stained glass window in the living room which serves as the gateway from the rustic lounge area, out to the stunning garden at the back. Original stone floorings, low ceilings and exposed wooden beams add oodles of character and personality to the home, while the wood-fired hot tub and living room stove bring the family together and provide a warming atmosphere. The house is surrounded by farmland but the nearby town provides local produce and delicious meals out. The landscape is sublime for country walks and adventures out to discover the local historical sights. If cycling is your thing, there's no better way to explore the myriad of local country lanes and villages than by bicycle. Stop off at Dennis China Works (a fifteen-minute ride away) for a pit stop in the tea rooms or why not visit one of the local cider producers' orchards and presses to see how it's made? Perry’s Cider in Dowlish Wake, for example, is only fifteen minutes away by bicycle or a six-minute drive away in the car.

The cottage is warm and welcoming, the perfect setting for a romantic escape. Curl up on the sofa and admire the lush garden as you sip Champagne. When the weather is fine, open up the glass doors to create a stunning indoor/outdoor space. Whip up meals in the kitchen to enjoy outside in the garden, or fire up the barbecue for a real alfresco treat – you might like to walk to the nearby farm shop for local goodies to cook. It takes thirty-two minutes to drive to Bath, where you can admire the Roman Baths and explore the galleries, museums and theatres – not to mention the excellent array of eateries. Or perhaps you’ll just pootle around the countryside, popping into charming villages – Mells and Bruton are close by – and country pubs whenever the fancy strikes? Soho House members will enjoy its proximity to Babington House. However you spend your time here, you’ll love having such a delightful place to call home.

The apartment makes the most of its hillside location, with folding doors across the front of the building which flood the space with light and can be opened to let the sea breeze in. There are sea views from nearly every angle, with the master bedroom looking out over the North Devon coast, as does the large living room. On sunny days, sit outside on the Mediterranean-style patio and sip a glass of something refreshing. From the home it's a five-minute walk to the cliff railway and the bars and shops of Lynton and Lynmouth. There are also many walking trails in the area, The South West Coast Path is very easily accessible, or you could hop in the car and head inland to explore the quant villages and moorlands of Exmoor National Park.

The gorgeous National Trust property of Stourhead is twenty minutes away by car, and is well worth a run out.

Its traditional touches, like the thatched roof and exposed beams, are complemented by the undeniably wholesome interior design – the wood-burner in the living room’s old hearth, dressers made from reclaimed wood, and timber beams on show in the country-chic kitchen. Right outside the kitchen, you’ll find outdoor dining for balmy summer evenings. The rustic theme doesn’t mean this place lacks grandeur. The master bathroom, in particular, is a lavish affair with its huge, walk-in shower and silver free-standing tub overlooking the garden. Or, opt for a soak in the wood-fired hot tub outside. The cottage is set on a private estate giving it a feel of tranquil privacy, and the surrounding countryside is ideal for long walks and scenic bike rides. The Jurrasic coast is a forty-minute drive south where you can find stunning coastal paths and beautiful beaches.

Always fantasised about being Lord or Lady of the Manor? Well, now you can be, sort of. This historic gatehouse (built in 1900) is part of a family estate, located in the Dorset village of Hinton St Mary. Recently refurbished by the owners in a modern but classic style (along with the estate’s stables, also available on Plum Guide), it's been opened up to outsiders for the very first time. We loved the balance between period features, such as the original windows, fireplace and kitchen floor, and brand new additions, like the shiny bathroom. Everything is finished in the best possible taste, with some lovely personal touches. The kitchen worktop is made from cedar from the estate, for example. The owners clearly want their new guests to feel at home, as they’re happy to accommodate needs, whims and fancies, from arranging a paid-for chef or babysitter, to offering a choice of seasonal duvets, luggage storage, locally sourced ingredients in the welcome pack and everything you’d need to bring your baby (high chair, cot, dinnerware, pram, potty, etc). The home’s location is another definite selling point. At the end of a small village lane near a cricket green and traditional pub, it’s picturesque and quaint. The nearest town is Sturminster Newton where there are shops and cafes, a great deli and butchers. This home makes a great base to explore the famous Dorset coast and countryside or simply settle back and relax by the wood-burning stove and imagine your servants are just out of sight.

The large fireplace, exposed masonry, flagstone floors, and timber beams are some of our favourite features, but your host goes the extra mile to make it even more special. With fluffy bathrobes and a seriously high thread count on the bedding, you can’t help but notice luxury all around. You can even have a private chef come over and cook your dinner. If you don’t fancy a Sunday roast, light up the barbecue in the lush back garden on a sunny day. The quiet country lanes lead two miles to the nearby town of Ilminster where you can stock up on fresh, local produce and immerse yourself in rural culture. And as part of rural culture, you’ll have to take a trip to the pub to sample some fine English ales.
