From the moment you see the grand stone exterior and cobbled courtyard, you’ll know that this ever-so-charming home is steeped in history. It's a former malthouse that’s over 300 years old and filled with traditional features. When you step into the entrance hall, you’re entering through the large oak door onto the original cart-way, and as you start trying to choose which bedroom you want to lay claim to, you’ll be winding your way up a turret stairway with rope bannisters, surrounded by wooden beams and original fireplaces. The interior has been fully renovated, with a modern handmade kitchen, squishy sofas, and cute-as-a-button bedrooms. Sip your afternoon tea perched on the sunny window seat with a good book in hand (there's an extensive collection to choose from), while gazing at the expansive green views of the playing fields and village church in the backdrop. Elsewhere, the large 14-seater pine dining table will be the perfect spot to savour a slow dinner with the entire group. Although in the garden you'll notice a patio, complete with outdoor furniture, that’s ideal for wine and cheese nights – there's a large lawn and a range of outdoor games available too (including table tennis) for hours of early evening fun. You don’t have to go far to continue the historical theme, as the pub next door is one of the oldest in the country and has been the resting place for many a monarch visiting the area since the 15th century. The surrounding county town, Frome, just a fifteen-minute drive away, was voted one of the best places to live in the UK - explore the rich history, shop at independent boutiques, buy fresh produce at the local market or dine at one of the many eateries dotted around nearby.

During the summer, the terraces are particularly inviting, while the clear skies provide fantastic stargazing opportunities come nighttime. Meanwhile, in winter, the thought of a brisk walk followed by lunch at the local pub is hard to resist — heading straight north from the property will get you to the pretty brooks that run off the River Cary, while the nearby villages of Corton Denham and Babcary are both home to excellent watering holes. The idyllic market town of Castle Cary is a ten-minute drive away, and just beyond that lies Bruton, which has been quietly remaking itself as a haven for artists, foodies and creatives. During the colder months, the wood-burning stove provides the perfect atmosphere for a night in, and the fact that the cabin is encased in glass from two sides means that you'll always have a great view of the countryside. The nearby village of Holcombe Rogus has lots of beautiful nature to explore. However, it's a great jumping-off point for trips further afield. The city of Exeter is only a twenty-minute drive away if you want to spend an afternoon in a more urban environment, while day trips to the stunning beaches of the north and south coasts are well within reach, as are Exmoor and Dartmoor national parks.

If you like the idea of escaping the city for a charm-filled cottage, but could do without dusty beams and draughty doors, this is the right home for you. 

The cottage is warm and welcoming, the perfect setting for a romantic escape. Curl up on the sofa and admire the lush garden as you sip Champagne. When the weather is fine, open up the glass doors to create a stunning indoor/outdoor space. Whip up meals in the kitchen to enjoy outside in the garden, or fire up the barbecue for a real alfresco treat – you might like to walk to the nearby farm shop for local goodies to cook. Soak up the sunshine outside and enjoy the countryside views. In the evening, get cosy around the fire pit before sinking into the oh-so-comfortable bed upstairs. 

You could happily spend your days here, playing board games, reading, and admiring the garden, but if you do want to explore further afield, you have plenty of choice. The crenulated, columned Victorian face of this home is a far cry from a typical, rustic farmhouse. The interior is manor home in miniature with chesterfields around an original fireplace in the main living room, long darkwood dining tables by the bay window, and chandeliers lighting huge bedrooms. Each room retains an element of Victoriana. Attached to the farmhouse, the old cider shed is the kind of country-rustic you’d expect  – flagstone floors in the kitchen, timber beams exposed in eaves bedrooms and a wood-burning in the master suite. The real highlight is the wood-fired hot tub outside beneath the pergola. It looks out over the beautifully manicured gardens, bursting with lavender and colourful hydrangea. If you’re not dining in the grand room inside, head out to the Italian-style loggia where dining is set for the whole group beneath a wooden roof. You’re in the middle of the West Country’s farmland here, with walking trails on your doorstep. But the charming market town of Bridgewater is just a fifteen-minute drive away.

A lot of time and thought has been put into converting the historic chapel that is now The Burrow. Nestled in a tranquil spot of countryside surrounded by rolling hills, the space feels authentically rustic but still comfortable and elegant. The tall arch windows provide floods of natural light and beautiful views of the landscape, including the inviting (and heated) swimming pool. While remote location would be difficult for guests without a car, it also makes it a great spot for a romantic getaway. 



The Burrow

This 18th-century stone cottage in Bruton, set on an organic dairy farm, has been lovingly restored. We love the character features, such as the exposed oak frame, inglenook fireplace, and flagstone floors. Whip up some lunch with organic ingredients from the gardens in the hand-built kitchen and then dine in the beautiful garden, surrounded by an array of pretty plants such as wisteria and guauras. Or let your hosts arrange for their chef to provide tasty picnics, afternoon teas and fine dining suppers. This home is ideal for those wanting privacy – there's an oak-framed annexe which has a ground floor bedroom and bathroom.

As an optional extra, adjacent to the cottage, an old bull-pen has been converted into a charming open-plan studio – it's an ideal tranquil space for yoga, meditation, writing or painting.

Speaking of artistic pursuits, if you love art, you'll adore fashionable Bruton with its galleries and museums. The town is a twenty-minute walk or a four-minute drive away, and you'll find an array of chic restaurants, antique stores and independent boutiques here.

Set on the banks of the River Isle, this mill in deepest Somerset was mentioned in the Domesday Book. Close to a thousand years later, part of it still stands and is ideal for holidaymakers looking for a unique rural escape. The internal shell of the building has been kept much the same as it would have looked in the fifteenth century and you certainly get a sense of that with the wooden staircases, exposed stonework and a preserved waterwheel in the attic bedroom. Thankfully, plenty of modern amenities have been added, including a log-burning fire, a country kitchen and a vintage roll-top bathtub that's a relative whippersnapper in comparison to the house itself. In the surrounding grounds, guests can wander about the working farm to meet the animals that also call it home, followed by kayaking and swimming in the river or a bike ride along the adjoining National Cycle Route 33. This being Somerset, there's plenty of countryside walks nearby, as well as cider mills for when you've worked up a thirst.

There’s no better way to embrace the ethereal Somerset countryside around Glastonbury than staying in a converted church. In the evening, the stained-glass windows of this gothic church still glow against the landscape, as a roaring wood-burning stove warms up the open living space inside. 30-foot, knaved ceilings inside let the chatter of good times rise to the Gods and there’s a banquet-sized dining table for the whole group on the mezzanine level. Admire the rose stained-glass windows as you sup. 

The kitchen is tucked away and has everything you need for self-catering One of our favourite spots is the sunroom, set with tables and chairs for an idyllic afternoon tea. Either that or the hand-painted claw-foot tub in the main bathroom – ideal for a soak after hiking up Glastonbury Tor. Or, soak the day away in the outdoor hot tub.

This church is tucked into the hamlet of East Horrington, a ten-minute drive from the Cathedral town of Wells where you’ll find shops, cafés and plenty of places to eat. It’s a twenty-minute drive to Glastonbury and the countryside in between is full of walking and cycling trails to explore. 

Gothic Church

Set on a quiet country lane, this 17th century, Grade II-listed farmhouse makes a wonderful holiday retreat in the heart of rural Somerset. Traditional features of the home have been partnered with luxurious interior furnishings, that maintain a high quality and provide excellent comfort for a snug stay in the countryside. We particularly love the stained glass window in the living room which serves as the gateway from the rustic lounge area, out to the stunning garden at the back. Original stone floorings, low ceilings and exposed wooden beams add oodles of character and personality to the home, while the wood-fired hot tub and living room stove bring the family together and provide a warming atmosphere. The house is surrounded by farmland but the nearby town provides local produce and delicious meals out. The landscape is sublime for country walks and adventures out to discover the local historical sights. If cycling is your thing, there's no better way to explore the myriad of local country lanes and villages than by bicycle. Stop off at Dennis China Works (a fifteen-minute ride away) for a pit stop in the tea rooms or why not visit one of the local cider producers' orchards and presses to see how it's made? Perry’s Cider in Dowlish Wake, for example, is only fifteen minutes away by bicycle or a six-minute drive away in the car.

The Duck Feather

An old hearth, flagstone floors and cast-iron roll-top baths; this is the farmhouse idyll in the heart of Somerset. The honey-brown stone farmhouse and cottage is surrounded by a sprawling woodland estate on all sides, and is two miles from Ilminster where you’ll find plenty of cosy pubs, restaurants, shops and cafés. There’s a restaurant on the estate itself if you don’t feel like getting in the car. Though the farmhouse kitchen is a delight to cook in and there’s a long dining table to serve the whole group. Or, opt for a barbecue outside in the summer months and keep an eye on the kids running free on the lawn and ducking between trees. At the end of the day, it’s a choice between cuddling up by the wood-burner in the snug lounge or heading out to the wood-fired hot tub for an evening under the stars. There are plenty of books and board games to keep the group happy too. If you’re lucky enough to bag the master bedroom there’s a claw-footed tub and your own wood-burner waiting for you at bedtime.

If you're planning a family getaway in Devon, look no further than these two traditional 17th-century brick-built barns. When you're ready to venture out, the Georgian splendour of Bath is a twenty-minute drive away. Spend the day exploring the Royal Crescent, the Circus and the Roman Baths, as well as the many museums such as the Jane Austen Centre. Then unwind at the Thermae Bath Spa with its roof-top pool. You’ve also got all of Somerset’s delights to discover by car. It takes eighteen minutes to drive to Glastonbury, where you can walk up to the Tor to take in the view, and shop in the quirky boutiques for crystals and tarot decks. Castle Cary and its charming cafes are sixteen minutes away, and it takes nineteen minutes to reach beautiful Bruton. 

That said you might find that you don’t want to leave the grounds at all. The house is elegant yet warm, full of rustic charm and modern luxuries – everything you need for a relaxing stay is to hand here. You’ll spend your time cooking delicious meals in the stunning kitchen, or playing games in one of the sitting rooms. The outside space is just as lovely, with a huge terrace and a barbecue that makes alfresco feasts in the summer an absolute dream. You’ll be planning your return trip even before reaching the end of the driveway.
