Deep within the Somerset countryside — halfway between Bristol and Bath — lies this pair of converted barns that will provide the most bucolic of countryside getaways. The first has been redesigned to be the living quarters with a whitewashed interior, orbicular hanging lights and a huge collection of house plants — not to mention a wood-burning stove for chillier evenings. Walk out through the huge glass doors and you'll see the second barn, which holds the en-suite bedrooms. The space in between these two buildings has been lovingly tended to, too. Out here, you'll find a stone hot tub built into the lawn, as well as two separate seating areas surrounded by plant beds where you can relax amid dappled Somerset sunshine. On warm days, head out for a walk in the neighbouring valley, which has a private arboretum to visit. It takes just over an hour to reach the top of Kelston Round Hill, which offers sweeping views. Alternatively, you can drive to the centre of Bath in under half an hour.

They have gone the extra mile to retain centuries-old features, including exposed stone walls and a gargoyle in the master bedroom, while introducing modern amenities that sit seamlessly within the space, creating a super chic country getaway. The open-plan ground floor is kitted out with a long dining table that makes for sociable evenings feasting on food prepared in the fully equipped kitchen. After dinner, grab a seat on the comfy sofa and settle in by the wood burner for the ultimate cosy evening. Climb the custom staircase up to the two double en-suite bedrooms (the twin is on the ground floor) with their unique wetroom style showers that are open to the room (so you better know your roommate pretty well). Wander down the track to Dyrham Park, one of the Cotswold's most stunning National Trust properties. Fans of the Poldark and Sanditon series, as well as the 1993 film Remains of the Day, might recognise this fabulous late seventeenth-century mansion and manicured gardens. Elsewhere, you're a little under ten miles from Bath, where you can take in the heritage atmosphere and grand Georgian architecture of one of the UK's most picturesque cities.

With breathtaking panoramas from every vantage point, this home is a gem. You'll be able to enjoy the views from the private hot tub and garden – although our favourite is the glimpses of the River Severn and Old Severn Bridge from the main bedroom. There’s the all-important log burner for when the weather gets chillier, too. This home is set on a working dairy farm, and your host is happy to give you a tour of the farm – something the kids will probably adore. Just bear in mind, at certain times of the year, the farm can be busy. When you feel like exploring a little further afield, you can visit Chepstow Castle or Lydney in the Forest of Dean.

The barn itself is surrounded by pigs, chicken, and other animals, with an Iron Age hillfort to explore on walks around the grounds. There's something mesmerising about getting up close with the animals – it's easy to spend hours out here, especially if you have little ones. You can fire up a barbecue, shared with the other homes on-site, for an alfresco feast. Or live like a local, and visit the pubs and restaurants of nearby Chipping Sodbury.

There’s no need to rush at this rustic old barn in the Cotswolds countryside. As you cross through the secret garden and step inside, you’ll understand. The ancient oak beams speak of a time when this home was originally the annexe to the larger barn next door, and the vaulted ceiling adds space to this studio-sized apartment. The windows look onto the shared garden, where the outdoor bench quickly became our favourite spot for an afternoon cuppa. The petit kitchen has all the necessities for a quick meal, and we couldn’t wait to snuggle down in the huge soft bed after a busy day exploring. Speaking of exploring, you’re on a working farm here and your hosts are more than willing to show you around and a few country walks are on the cards with an Iron Age fort just next door. Situated in the small village of Bitton, this family home is a peaceful retreat in the countryside. The private outdoor terrace and dining area are ideal for socialising and sunset watching, while the hot tub is perfect to unwind in after a long day walking across the countryside. Location-wise, both Bath and Bristol are just a short drive away but if you’d prefer to stay at home, your host provides access to their horse riding stables and treatment room.

As with breakfast and dinner, we recommend lunch al fresco under the vine-covered pergola before going back to sunbathing poolside. In the summer months, when a heat wave brings more potent temperatures your way, you might spend entire sun-drenched afternoons splashing in the crystal-clear waters of the private pool. 

With peace and tranquillity in spades, it’s unlikely that you’ll want to leave that behind, but the charming market town of Dursley is a must for a nice walk and a cup of coffee at the end of it. 

Golfers can escape to Stinchcombe Hill, whilst watersport lovers can visit the Cotswold Water Park to try their hand at white-water rafting. 

Return to play a few games of pool in the drawing room, sipping whiskey that you can later take outside for a peaceful drink at sunset.

It's actually situated on a working farm, where animals like chickens, donkeys, goats and the owner's dogs all roam, so if a rural retreat is what you're after, this will do nicely. The open-plan layout is roomy and bright, so you'll have more than enough room to spread out. On sunny days, open the bi-fold doors and enjoy the fresh country air as it wafts through the living area, or step out into the courtyard and for an alfresco afternoon tea. Underfloor heating will keep chilly toes at bay while you're rustling up dinner in the kitchen – a bonus for the winter months – while the wet-room style bathroom has a sleek rainfall shower. Make sure to pack comfortable shoes, as there are walking trails aplenty. You're more than welcome to collect fresh eggs for breakfast, swim in the freshwater pond or sign up for an on-site art class – or speak to the host about arranging special experiences, like private chefs and at-home massages. Dyrham Park is right down the street, there's a rumoured Saxon king's burial site behind the farm and both a cafe and pub are within walking distance. It's an excellent spot for a countryside getaway, but if you crave a bit more pace, Bath is only a thirty-minute drive away.

In the village of North Nibley, there’s a small shop and the Black Horse pub within walking distance but you’ll want a car to explore the rest of the Cotswolds.

Royal York Crescent, in the historic heart of Clifton, was once the longest terrace in Europe. You can definitely picture Austen-esque heroines waving from the Regency wrought-iron balconies that run the length of the crescent. Oak floors and high ceilings stay true to the home's architectural roots and the huge sash windows present lovely views all the way to the Mendip Hills. The main living space is lined with full-length bookshelves, while the original fireplace gives it a stately-home feel. Fold-away doors open up to the modern kitchen, packed with everything you need for cooking from a simple meal to an intricate feast. Give riverside living a whirl at this stylish apartment located in Harbourside, Bristol's most sought-after neighbourhood. Housed in a Grade II-listed Edwardian building overlooking the river, the original lofty bay windows and ceilings remain, while contemporary, mid-century inspired furniture is paired with a soft colour palette to keep the apartment feeling current.  Placed just a twenty-minute walk from Bristol Temple Meads Train Station, arriving at this apartment is a cinch if you'd rather not drive. And there's plenty to discover on foot from this apartment too. In the charming, cobbled streets, uncover a rich maritime history, buzzy restaurants, craft beer barges for an obligatory pint of cider, independent boutiques, and galleries and museums aplenty. Modern, and obviously, very fun, it might not be the biggest, but it certainly uses the space it has well. Move easily from the kitchen to the lounge, with a cup of freshly-brewed coffee in hand, to sink into the gorgeous, plush velvet sofa. Here you can catch up on series, finish the crime thriller you’ve been reading, or lean back to practice mindfulness. If you love cooking, you’ll probably be pretty taken with this sleek kitchen where you can prepare meals for the whole group. There’s no pressure though, not when there are dozens of restaurants and cafes around for you to sample instead. 

For a day out, visit the Grade I listed suspension bridge (a sixteen-minute walk from your front door) and continue on with the history as you visit the Clifton Cathedral afterwards – with a coffee break in between, of course. There’s also sky yoga, a fine art gallery, a music club, and an improv theatre all within easy walking distance.
