Step inside and prepare to be wowed by the open-plan living room and kitchen, with a comfy seating area, gas fire and farmhouse-style kitchen beneath a soaring double-height ceiling with the exposed original timber frame on show.

Vast floor-to-ceiling windows ensure that there's plenty of natural light alongside views over the lovely garden. Climb the open staircase up to the mezzanine floor to find an inviting bedroom and reading area where you're free to relax and unwind at any time of day or night.

In the enclosed gardens, you'll find outdoor seating to make the most of long summer evenings and alfresco meals, a fire pit to gather around once the sun has set, and a 'cocoon' hanging from one of the trees. Lovers of outdoor games will find badminton, boules and croquet sets that can be set up on the lawn.

Bringing you back to a bygone era, this quaint cottage in the Suffolk countryside is made from straw bales and couldn't be further from the city. Warm and inviting, the rustic interior is as cosy as can be. In the winter, sit and catch up by the crackling pellet stove, while the wooden deck and pretty rural garden are just the ticket for fine summer days. Take it in turns to cook in the open-plan kitchen, which is ideal for a chef that likes to socialise and have a drink as the rest of the group relaxes. Rounding out the space, you'll find a couple of comfy bedrooms, each with their own en-suites, making this eco-home suitable for a family, a few friends or two couples craving some fresh country air.

On your doorstep, you'll find miles of rolling green countryside perfect for a wander. Make your way to the village pub for some delicious grub and a refreshing ale (it's a half-hour walk), or for a bit more buzz, historic market town Bury St. Edmunds is just a twenty-minute drive away. If you fancy a day on the Suffolk coast, popular spots like Felixstowe, Aldeburgh and Southwold are about an hour away by car.

Surrounded by over 500 acres of woodland, lakes and ponds, this Grade II-listed farmhouse makes a big impression. Rooms are spacious and comfortably modern, though taller guests might want to watch their heads on some of the sloping ceilings. The manicured garden stretches around the outdoor seating, making it easy for parents to supervise kids playing on the lawn whilst they enjoy a sunset drink. There's also a tennis court, gym, squash court, play set, and table tennis to keep everyone busy, but the lake is our favourite. With a jetty and small rowing boat, you can get out on the water whenever you need a peaceful moment.

Escape for some fresh coastal air and bring your friends or family members along with you. It's a spacious and stylish apartment with plenty of seating, pops of colour and tasteful decor. Ideal for a small group, this contemporary home offers comfortable bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms, a sleek kitchen and a chic dining area – we especially love the Eames-style chairs and funky artwork. While this is a modern build, and a well-presented one at that, there's a warmth here with the vibrant scatter cushions, comfy throws and green houseplants that makes it feel like home right away. The real highlight of the apartment is outside space – complete with garden furniture, a barbecue and a tall wooden fence for added privacy – sitting out on the patio with a glass of chilled wine is a dreamy way to bookmark any day if you ask us. Perfectly placed, walk to sandy Great Yarmouth Beach in less than twelve minutes and be at Nelson's Monument and the lively town centre in under half an hour. We'd especially recommend a trip to the Merrivale Model Village if you're after a fun family day out – as with most of the popular attractions, it's well within reach here.

The coastal village of Southwold, like most English seaside towns, has a splendid mix of quaint shops, rustic pubs, and chippies. A twelve-minute walk from its traditional pier, and fourteen from the boating lake, this cottage is a perfect base for exploring the local delights. As you enter through the red brick archway, stepping inside the home is like being transported to old England. You’ll immediately feel a warm welcome for the original wooden beams and fireplace in the lounge. With muted colours throughout, it’s a calming space for a country retreat. White walls bring a fresh and modern feel, with some quirky features like a funky chandelier in the master bedroom. Outside, we love the idea of sitting out in sun on the peaceful patio, with a cup of tea and a novel. And to pique the interest of literature fans, Southwold is a former stomping ground of George Orwell. A far cry from the urban dystopias of some novels, the fictional town from 'A Clergyman’s Daughter' is based on this very village. See if you can find the Orwell plaque in town (hint: follow the smell of fish and chips).

This charming apartment provides guests with gorgeous views of the River Deben, where you can watch the yachts and wildlife all day long. The large windows throughout the home allow plenty of natural daylight to pour into the living space, as well as provide direct access to the lovely terrace. Head out to explore the historical town of Woodbridge, where you'll find a fantastic range of restaurants that serve up delicious cuisine as well as cosy cafes for a lovely hot drink. Visit Market Hill to admire the old buildings or the popular Tide Mill.

The town of Bury St Edmunds is perhaps most famous for its cathedral and former abbey, and this apartment puts you as close as can be to these landmarks. In fact, the historic Norman Tower and Cathedral Gate can be seen out the window. Inside, the newly refurbished interior living quarters feel suitably smart, from the wooden floorboards and mid-century inspired furnishings to the stark white walls and the sleek surfaces in the kitchen. The bedroom has been painted in a soothing shade of pastel pink and there's even a bathtub for enjoying long soaks after a day of taking in all that this quaint town has to offer. As well as the ecclesiastical attractions just across the street, Moyse's Hall Museum can be reached in six minutes' walk, while the Italiante Ickworth House is only eighteen minutes away in the car.

A home to enjoy whatever the season – there’s a cosy lounge and open fire for winter months, and a pretty and secluded courtyard garden complete with a barbecue for making the most of sunnier days. With everything on your doorstep, you’ll find there’s no need for a car. Grab your bucket and shades and take a stroll down to Southwold Beach with its beach-lined promenade and pier, all just five minutes on foot – stopping off at the local bakery for picnic supplies first. And when tummies start to rumble, there’s fish and chips aplenty and many a local pub all within walking distance on the high street. This one-of-a-kind barn conversion definitely has the wow factor. With an ancient shell, but an interior straight out of a contemporary design magazine, it’s no wonder it was featured in the Times’ Best Holiday Houses for Groups in Britain in 2018. The heart of the home is the enormous open-plan living area, with its soaring ceilings and wall of glass. We can imagine some really special meals here. There are six bedrooms, most of which have splendid views over rolling fields, and the hot tub in the lower ground bedroom is a real touch. Pour a glass of something cold and relax on the patio while the younger guests run wild in the large garden (just over an acre) or a stroll into the village. Chelsworth is basically an open-air history museum, with wattle and daub houses that are mostly unchanged since the 17th Century, and a country pub for that delicious post-walk pint.

If you're looking for somewhere that embraces slow country living yet has all the little luxuries you'll need for a getaway, this converted goat shed is sure to do the trick. Situated on the grounds of a family-run farm dating back as far as the 1300s, we think it's the perfect bolthole for a romantic, restful weekend in the great outdoors.

Inside, vaulted ceilings sport original wooden beams, while enormous glass walls flood the space with sunlight. Books and board games line the shelves, cushy sofas are perfect for snuggling and a delightful wood burner keeps everything toasty warm on chilly evenings. We love the small but well-equipped kitchen – you'll have everything you need to rustle up dinner – and the sumptuous bathtub is just the ticket after an invigorating walk through the countryside. On summer days, take your relaxing onto the private courtyard garden, gathering around the fire pit and firing up the barbecue for an alfresco feast when you grow peckish.

Spend sunny afternoons strolling around the farm, admiring the prehistoric ponds – they're some of the last remaining ones in the country. This home is nestled in the heart of the Brecks, where wild forests, craggy heaths and twisted pines are rife for rambling. It sits along the Peddars Way – ideal for walkers, cyclers and horseback riders travelling along the ancient route – plus it's within easy reach of Norwich and an hour's drive from Norfolk's stunning beaches when you fancy a day by the sea.

Twenty minutes on foot from the pristine sands of Walberswick Beach, this cottage-like home sits proudly at the end of a quaint row of village houses. Its standout exterior makes it unique on this street. The tasteful, pale-grey slatted wood is reminiscent of an exotic beachside retreat, but white detailing on the pointed roof and oriel windows give the home Nordic character. Inside, original beams support the sloped ceilings, bringing a rustic vibe. But yet again, there are surprisingly unique and modern features. We love the decorative white fireplace, stylish cushioned window seat, and the incredible upstairs bathroom – an enormous glass shower built into the arch of the roof. Further delights can be found outside. From one of the bedrooms, there’s a cute paved courtyard with a dining set (the perfect spot for sipping Earl Grey in the morning). On the other side, find a lush lawn, enclosed by leafy trees, which feels so secluded and private that you’ll forget that you’re in a village. To explore a busier side to the area, head fifteen minutes by car to Southwold for a walk along the pier and a portion of fish and chips.

A rural retreat with an almost embarrassing amount of charm, this thatched home dates back centuries and represents the best of Norfolk's architectural style. Carefully modernised and curated with stylish wall colours, art and a mix of antique and contemporary furniture, it's a fabulous space to unwind in unique surroundings. As well as a stunning historic home, it boasts a large, enclosed garden and a summer house to die for.  

Inside, the stripped-back, authentic character of this place is evident in the ancient beams, brick floors and inglenook fireplace. A comfy velvet sofa provides a modern twist but otherwise, the living room is dressed like it would have been a hundred years ago or so. Elsewhere there's a delightful country kitchen, a casual dining room and a midnight-blue TV room, along with a useful utility room and three gorgeous bedrooms.

And outside you'll find pretty gardens, along with a greenhouse and a deck for enjoying the sun. Step inside the summer house for the biggest surprise though. A lovely space for friends and family to socialise and eat together, it comes with a Scandinavian-style indoor barbecue cabin. 

Around half an hour's drive from both Diss and Norwich, you'll be deep in the country here so a car is essential, but there are great walks to be had nearby and the coast is around forty-five minutes away. Visit Southwold, Lowestoft and more for days out by the sea.
