We love how the coastal scenery is reflected in the sleek and stylish design. Yellow chairs invite you to kick back and relax with a glass of wine, admiring the views framed in the full-height windows. The compact but well-stocked kitchen is ideal for romantic dinners at home, while the lush rainfall shower is just the ticket after a balmy day by the sea. 

Of course, days here are best spent wandering along the traditional pier, snacking on fish and chips at Goodrington Sands and dipping your toes in Tor Bay. How annoying is it when you pack everything for an afternoon on the beach and make the journey over, before realising you've forgotten something crucial? At this home, Paignton Beach sits less than a hundred metres from the front door, so you can pop back in no time at all.

That may be the apartment's biggest perk, but there's more to the address than its proximity to Tor Bay. We've got a lot of praise for the contemporary design entirely absent of nautical kitsch – just lots of natural light, sleek tiling, and soothing white walls. Perhaps some might see the open living space as a little too limited in size, but there's just enough space in here for small groups to relax and cook modest meals.

Aside from the nearby stretch of sand, there are seafront pubs and the town's Victorian Pier with which to get acquainted, while the famous South West Coast Path runs close by the house and continues in both directions for dramatically beautiful walking routes.

The South West Coastal Path runs right outside the door, so hikers can enjoy a day of clifftop walks in either direction. Following the bay, you can reach Torquay in just ten minutes by car. But there’s plenty to keep you occupied in Paignton itself, like the long sweep of beach, Victorian pier with old-style arcades and cafes, pubs and fish and chip shops galore.

The nautical decor inside is a reminder of how close you are to the sea – anchors on the wall, paintings of beach huts and a palette of soft blues and whites. The stylish grey kitchen has all the essentials for self-catering, and the breakfast table sits in a sunny spot by the window, overlooking the rooftops of Paignton. Located in Paignton, this home is only a short walk from many great activities including Paignton Beach – a nineteen-minute walk away – where you will find the pier, the Geopark, a fairy cove, pirates bay adventure golf, and even a multiplex cinema perfect for those typical rainy British days. What’s more, Splashdown water park is a short nine-minute walk away and Torbay Leisure Centre – with its pool, gym and squash courts – is reachable in twelve minutes on foot.

Your little ones will love letting off steam in the home’s large, enclosed garden too, with the kid's swing, trampoline, treehouse, football goal and pirate boat. Meanwhile, you can relax on the garden bench with a good book or enjoy an afternoon Devonshire cream tea alfresco at the outdoor dining area. 

When it’s time to come indoors, head from the decked veranda through the French doors into the living space. This is a barn conversion in which the standard of the renovation has been of such quality that it's nigh-on impossible to picture its functional past. Set in twenty-six acres of Devon countryside, the building has been given some hi-tech features, including a ground-source heating system and an intelligent lighting system, as well as a lot of large glass windows that make the space a lot brighter than could be expected of an old barn. Our favourite space has to be the mezzanine lounge, reached via a glass spiral staircase and with a skylight on one side that's perfect for stargazing. The large kitchen looks the picture of modernity, but there's an Aga in place for a touch of rusticness. Stepping outside, there's a large patio area complete with an alfresco dining table, barbecue and fire pit, so you can sit out here on summer evenings and bask in the spectacular view of Longcombe Valley. The medieval town of Totnes can be reached in seven minutes in the car and offers plenty of quaint shops and restaurants to explore. Paignton Beach is a seventeen-minute drive away, too.

Upon the English Riviera, staying in the warm climate of the sophisticated town of Torquay feels like the equivalent of Cannes. Hop off a yacht at Torquay Marina and take an eighteen-minute stroll to this fabulous apartment, fit for any VIP. Upon arrival, your host will have a bottle of wine waiting for you. Before you even start exploring this modern flat, pour yourself a glass and say cheers to the start of the holiday. Do you like a home with a view? Because this one offers several. From its many large windows, you can spot the bay, beaches, harbours, the marina, and of course the big blue sea itself. On a sunny day, we recommend taking a bowl of olives and a chilled prosecco out to the private balcony – pop up the parasol if it gets too hot. Indoors, pristine white and cream interiors make the space feel fresh, with a mint-green sofa which you can sink into after a long day of beachside activities. South Devon might feel distinctly Mediterranean, but you’ll certainly enjoy ending the day with a refreshing cup of Earl Grey.

Is there anything better than a seaside holiday? This lovely stone cottage is in Marldon, on the edge of the English Riviera. Bring your bucket and spade, as you’re within easy reach of several beaches. We love paddling at Paignton, which is a twelve-minute drive, and exploring the harbour in Torquay, which is sixteen minutes away. 

If you prefer to keep your feet dry, there’s still plenty to enjoy here. The South West Coastal Path is a dream for hikers and cyclists, and you have all of Dartmoor’s delights to discover too. 

When you’re not exploring, you’ll be relaxing at the cottage. Curl up on the sofa beneath wooden beams for a cosy afternoon in, or spill out onto the courtyard for games in the fresh air. Head out to a pub for dinner, pick up fish and chips, or cook in the well-equipped kitchen. Everything you might need is close to hand at this comfortable and convenient home-from-home.

If you're anything like us, you'll want to spend every spare moment in the courtyard garden, watching the boats float by. Summer mornings call for coffee and alfresco breakfasts, while evenings are the perfect excuse to pour yourself a glass of wine and admire the South Devon sunsets.

Inside, you can't help but swoon over the comfortable and chic spaces. Unwind with a good book in the window seat, or throw a log on the wood-burner and snuggle up on the leather sofa for a Netflix movie night. For dinner, rustle up something tasty in the kitchen – this area is home to some of the country's best seafood – or head down to the local pub, just one minute away, when you don't fancy cooking.

Speaking of location, you've got the Dart Valley at your fingertips. You're just a stone's throw from the quayside, where you can hop on a ferry to Dartmouth and Greenway. Craving sand and sun? Drive twenty minutes to Blackpool Sands and while away the afternoon by the sea.

Although the classic sitcom Fawlty Towers gave the impression that accommodation in Torquay left much to be desired, this majestic townhouse completely dispels that notion. 

Having been renovated in 2022, the design brings together boldly patterned wallpaper, a smattering of antique furnishings, some well-chosen pieces of artwork and tufted furnishings to create an interior that feels traditional but far from stale. The bright blue tiling in the bathroom is rather fetching, too

It must be said that the standout features are found in the garden, which is filled with flowers during the warmer months. As well as offering plenty of seating out on the terrace, there's also a hot tub in which you can pass summer evenings.

If the weather gods are smiling down upon you during your stay, the shingle beach at Anstey's Cove can be reached in under fifteen minutes, while Babbacombe Beach takes ten minutes more than that. The Kent Cavern caves are only eight minutes away on foot, too.

Perfect for families, little ones will love to explore this haven for wildlife – just bear in mind that there’s an unfenced pond and stream here, so children and dogs will need to be supervised when enjoying the outdoor space. Is the coast calling your name? It’s a mere twenty-minute drive to Blackpool Sands.

If the gentle trickle of water helps you relax and you're a lover of the great outdoors, this fabulous home is sure to delight you. Right next to a narrow part of the River Harbourne, which leads to the Dart, it's a converted fruit barn with bags of character and more than its fair share of chic styling. 

Built around 1825 and once a rubble ruin, the home has been completely modernised, with plenty of contemporary luxuries blending with the building's original structures. We love the extended kitchen and dining space, where beams and exposed stone walls give way to gunmetal grey patio doors and a glass ceiling.

Designed to be cosy for four but with the option of adding two children in the spacious master suite, it's a beautiful home with several standout features. As well as the modern log burner in the sitting room, there's the private garden beside the river, the high-spec kitchen, glamorous bathrooms and comfy beds. Plus a friendly local host who'll be on hand with tips and recommendations about the area.

On the outskirts of a village near Totnes, you'll be ideally positioned to access all of the South Hams easily by car. And keen walkers can head off to Totnes, Tuckenhay, Cornworthy and more. There are two good pubs within walking distance and the nearby Sharpham Estate has a great farm shop.

Surrounded by the beautiful Devon countryside, you’ll find easy access to walking trails as well as the picturesque village of Dittisham – just a mile away. And while days can be spent exploring, by night you’ll love returning home to relax by the wood-burning fire. Pets are welcome to join you during your stay, plus there is a large private garden with outdoor seating – perfect for summer evening drinks.

We think this cute home on the south Devon coastline has the rustic cosiness of a beach hut, but with all the modern finesse demanded by today's holidaymakers. Inside, original wood flooring and the brick fireplace housing a wood-burner are particularly handsome features, but the real star of the show is the view of Brixham Harbour from the large windows in both the living room and bedrooms — pack your binoculars and you can watch fishing boats coming in and out of the bay. Around the other side of the home, there's a stone-walled back garden complete with a patio, alfresco seating area and a barbecue. We can totally understand if you're not in the mood to cook at any point and the nearby town of Brixham — only ten minutes or so away on foot — has plenty of seafood restaurants, as well as fish and chips shops and cosy pubs. In the other direction, Fishcombe Cove and Battery Gardens can be reached in the same amount of time, too.

However, our personal choice would be to escape the crowds and walk twenty minutes to the secluded shingle beach at Fishcombe Cove – it's a local favourite for a reason.

In the evenings, there’s an electric fireplace here too for added ambience, while the dining room invites celebratory feasts aplenty while gazing out over the ships sailing in and out of Dartmouth Harbour. 
For the best views of all, however, step out onto the private terrace where an outdoor table beckons sunny alfresco breakfasts and evening drinks on the sofa as the sun sets over the river.
There’s access to this privileged spot from the second bedroom too, while the main bedroom boasts a beautiful Juliet balcony. 
Outside of your home, the Dartmouth Steam Railway is a seven-minute walk away, Man Sands beach is a thirteen-minute drive and Dartmouth is easily reached by ferry, a nine-minute stroll from your door. 


Port Charm

Two buildings make up this family-sized home on the outskirts of Torquay. It’s a fifteen-minute walk from the town centre for all the seafood and sailing you can handle. Large families or groups of friends can spread out between two living rooms, two indoor kitchens and a basement chill-out room complete with arcade games, beanbags and a huge flatscreen TV. We love the long dining table in the conservatory, crowned with twisting vines. But it’s the outdoor space that drew us in, with a hot tub on the covered terrace, curtained lounge area and a full outdoor kitchen protected from the elements.  

Seaview Glory

Once upon a time this unique building was a working mill, but it has since been lovingly restored to create a cosy holiday cottage. The traditional thatched roof and stone walls are typical of Cockington – a historic village nestled in a tranquil wooded valley. Inside, you’ll find vaulted ceilings, wooden beam and plenty of space for a small family or few friends. The terrace is ideal for an alfresco breakfast before you head out to explore – after all, Cockington Country Park is right on your doorstep. The resort town of Torquay is under a mile away, where you’ll find bustling restaurants, sandy beaches and a variety of unique seaside attractions. Everything is easy here – your host will even provide you with a parking permit for some of the local beauty spots, and a delicious complimentary Devon cream tea to indulge in.

We love the flairs of modernity and fun at this Victorian townhouse, placed just a ten-minute stroll from Dartmouth's harbour edge.

Spread out over three floors and glowing from top-to-toe in crisp white, this family retreat is a joy to return home to. Vintage memorabilia posters and zesty pops of colour perk the space up a treat, while period features and antique pieces bring all the character and charm.

Over in the first of two living rooms, butter-soft sofas placed beside the fire are more than inviting. As is the Gatsby-esque 1920's mini bar in the grown-up feel sitting room next door – playfully known as the Cocktail Room by the owners. And the shaker-style kitchen makes cooking and entertaining a joy – especially with it's handy opening out to the sitting room so that you can keep an eye on the rest of your troops.

When it's time for some coastal adventures, take a stroll down the hill towards Dartmouth's historic maritime centre (five-minute walk – a little longer when you're coming back up!), stopping at its smart shops, galleries, and boutique bistros along the way. Or for a dose of traditional seaside nostalgia, grab your nets and buckets for crabbing on the embankment before fish and chips down at the harbour's quayside – the views of the bobbing boats are delightful. And when the beach finally calls, hop in the car and you'll be on the glorious sheltered bay of Blackpool Sands in five minutes flat.

Both moor and coastline are within a few miles, with Dartmoor National Park only a twelve-minute drive away and the golden stretches of Broadsands Beach just a twenty-minute drive. Back at home, you’ll find a thoughtfully designed home whose historic ceilings and original features are complemented by contemporary furnishings. Unwind in the elegant sitting room under the stately chandelier and enjoy afternoon tea. The kitchen is well-equipped for home-cooked meals, and we especially love the oval dining table with a view of the street for entertaining. At the end of the day, you’ll find the bedrooms share the same elegant atmosphere and eye to comfort. Settle in for a night of dreamy, restorative sleep.

This chic apartment not only boasts tranquil views of the English Channel, but it’s also within 250 metres of Torquay Beach. Inside, the place is fresh and funky – we loved the pastel pink furnishings and bold accent walls. After a restful sleep in the comfortable beds, rustle up a full English in the sleek kitchen or pick up some freshly baked pastries from the coffee shop opposite your building. Soak up the warm sunshine on the terrace before slipping on your sandals and strolling along the South West Coast Path. 

When lunchtime rolls around, head into the heart of Torquay, around a ten-minute walk away, to sample the independent eateries. If you fancy swapping the seaside for the country, Dartmoor National Park is less than an hour’s drive from your building. 

Ambient Works

A short stroll from Brixham’s town centre and harbour, this home has comfort and convenience at its core. Though there are three floors of house, it’s not the largest space, but it’ll suit those seeking a fuss-free base. That said, with restaurants, shops and beaches nearby, much time will be spent exploring the local area anyway. Unfussy bedrooms mean a peaceful night’s sleep, and while there isn’t an outdoor space here, Churston Cove and Shoalstone Seawater Pool are easily reached by car – or foot if you’re happy to walk twenty minutes. 

Harbour Retreat

With its sumptuous interiors and privileged position in the heart of Dartmouth, this home is a great base for exploring one of South Devon’s most enchanting towns and its surrounding countryside. Inside, a cosy seating area unfolds into a modern kitchen – we loved the glass ceiling and creamy neutral colour scheme. Head upstairs for quiet bedrooms which guarantee a peaceful night's sleep.

On warm afternoons, spill out onto the terrace for barbecues in the balmy sunshine. Or why not pack a picnic and enjoy a bite to eat in Coronation Park, a five-minute walk away. If you’d like to learn more about the local history, visit the Dartmouth Museum before exploring Bayard’s Cove Fort. 

And of course, no trip to southwest England would be complete without a day at the beach, so slap on your sun cream and make haste to the Blue Flag Award-winning Blackpool Sands, just a ten-minute drive from your doorstep.
