A perfect getaway for two, this cottage delivers on all fronts. It's bright and contemporary, but the vaulted ceilings and exposed beams add a rustic touch that suits the surrounding landscape. Inside, a light-filled living area opens onto a gorgeous patio. Sipping champagne as the sun goes down will become your evening ritual – keep an eye out for wild rabbits and rare birds flying overhead. The kitchen is on the smaller side, but it's well-stocked and well-suited to rustling up delicious breakfasts and other light meals. We also adore the sleigh bed – it's as comfortable as it looks, and nothing beats sinking into the plush sheets after a day of exploring. Speaking of exploring, you're only a five-minute drive from Alnwick, a charming market town with a famous castle. Roam the cobbled streets lined with independent shops, cafes, pubs and restaurants, then head up to the castle for a history lesson or wander the gardens. Drive ten minutes in the opposite direction and you'll hit the Northumberland coast – both Boulmer and Alnmouth are great options if you fancy a day by the seaside.

Listen To The Wind

A truly stunning rural retreat, this home is sat on a hill overlooking the beautiful South Tyne Valley – just five minutes from Hadrian's Wall. Away from it all, yet within walking distance of the village pub, this place really has to be one of our favourites in this neck of the woods. A converted farm worker's cottage, it's been lovingly updated to create a modern and comfortable stay. As soon as you walk in, you're welcomed by a warm and classically furnished home, with every little detail already thought of. There's an impressive stone fireplace in the open-plan living room, fitted with a log burner for cosy evenings in, no matter the weather outside. On sunny days, open the French doors to the pretty garden and sit outside on the terrace – the sunsets here are amazing. Keen cooks will love the high-spec kitchen, which flows easily into the dining area and living room so everyone can socialise. Each bedroom has a bathroom and we love the master bedroom's view and its lovely freestanding bath. Here you'll be in prime walking country, with hikes from your doorstep. And it's just a ten-minute drive to the market town of Hexham.

Wonder Wall

This smart apartment, located just a few metres away from the shoreline, is the perfect place to call home during a trip to the charming town of Whitby. With plenty of space, stylish decor, and fantastic sea views, you'll settle in in no time at all. 

Step inside, and you'll find a sleek, open-plan set-up cloaked in soothing blues and greys. Fire up the Nespresso machine to make a fresh americano, then curl up in one of the powder blue armchairs as you watch the world go by outside. The kitchen has everything you need to cook up a delicious traditional roast dinner to serve up at the stylish dining bench, while the peaceful bedrooms guarantee you a great night's sleep. 

Cross the road and you'll arrive at Whitby’s West Cliff beach, a blue-flag beach where you can paddle or stroll along the sand, ice cream in hand. There are plenty of nearby seafood restaurants where you can savour the fresh catch of the day, along with independent boutiques and cosy pubs dotted along the cobbled streets. Don't forget to walk up the 199 steps, made famous by Bram Stoker's 'Dracula', to visit the iconic ruined cathedral. And, if you fancy exploring the gorgeous local countryside, then the North York Moors National Park is just outside the town. 

Sound of the Waves

The historic market town of Barnard Castle is located in County Durham, almost straddling the border of not one but two national parks. WIth the Yorkshire Dales just under a half-hour drive, and the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty the same distance north-west, you’ll most likely be spending your days hiking through the incredible scenery of North England. But you’ll also need a place to kick off your boots and relax with a cup of tea. This delightful house is a five-minute walk from 12th-century Barnard Castle – while this is ideal for history buffs, the modern interiors of the home will please 21st-century sensibilities. Huge windows in the lounge illuminate an elegant living space, with a charcoal feature wall, and tones of blue and grey bringing a zen vibe. The kitchen is equally stylish, with its minty-green, vintage-style fridge and matching teardrop lamp shades – a lovely spot to enjoy a roast dinner with the family on a rainy Sunday. Both bedrooms have fluffy throws and cushioned headboards as standard, so you’ll be slumbering peacefully (perhaps after a G&T for a little nightcap) before getting ready for another day in the great outdoors.

Earl Blue

Rejuvenate with panoramic coastal views and sea air at this contemporary home perched along the mighty beach cliffs of Saltburn-by-the-Sea. With the Victorian spa town's golden sands and bustling town centre all just a five-minute jaunt away, it's hard to imagine a better location. 

Spend days sandcastle making, kite flying, and surfing, if you time the tide right. And when tummies start to rumble, hop on the cliff lift (the oldest of its kind in the UK, no less) just eight minutes from your door. You'll be down on the promenade backed by its colourful beach huts in no time for fish and chips and lashings of ice creams. 

Back at home, this place is a masterstroke in the art of modern living, with zesty pops of colour creating a welcoming retreat. But it's those views of the distant horizon taking all the glory here. In winter months, sink into the sumptuous, velvet sofas positioned just so to take in the seascapes with a cuppa. And when the sun shines, pad out onto the sea-facing terrace with a glass of something chilled – the outdoor lighting will help keep the night flowing. 

Upstairs, you'll discover bedrooms all adorned with crisp white linens, and kids will love the bunk beds in the third bedroom. And the pièce de résistance? The vast main suite with those sea views again. Best seen from the king-size bed with tea and toast, we think

Marine Parade

Shhh. Can you hear that sound? Us neither. Quietness and tranquility await in this truly extraordinary country cottage in the North Yorkshire dales. The home's glorious traditional features - original stone floors, warm wooden beams, a roaring fireplace - are full of character, but it's the styling of this home that will make you feel at ease from the moment you arrive. In the welcoming living room, the exquisitely-soft turquoise sofa is the perfect place to while away the hours with a book from the well-stocked bookshelf, and Eastern-inspired touches (including Buddha statues) add to the sense of calm. The kitchen, with its white marble countertops and exposed stone walls, is the ideal spot to cook up a rib-sticking meal. The bedrooms are elegant but simply furnished, with mustard yellow blankets and a dried flower wreath creating little moments of joy. But perhaps the real peace here comes from the scenery – this home is in the Yorkshire Dales’ Arkengarthdale, a beautifully remote location where you can hike for miles without seeing another soul. Bliss.

The Riverside Cottage

It seems quite fitting that a home situated in the heart of the picturesque and historic County Durham should be equally charming – and this cottage nestled on the edge of the village of Hurworth fits the bill perfectly. Surrounded by lush woodlands and steps away from the river Tees, this is an ideal spot to base yourself if you wish to enjoy the tranquillity and natural beauty of this region. 

While the cottage retains its original character, the inside has been fully renovated and restored, offering all the modern comforts to make your stay a restful one. Step through the front door to be greeted by a bright and welcoming interior, with a cosy living room, perfect for lounging about and enjoying movie nights and evenings of wine and conversation by the fire. 

The bright and well-equipped kitchen inspires to create delicious feasts which can be shared with your loved ones either indoors or out in the privacy of the back garden.

For a night of rest and relaxation head upstairs, where you can unwind in the luxurious bathtub before getting some quality sleep in the comfy bedrooms. Wake up restored and plan your day’s adventures with a cup of coffee in the garden. 

Why not head to the village and enjoy lunch at one of the lovely pubs or drive over to nearby Darlington for a spot of shopping. Just minutes down the road you'll also find the Rockliffe Hall Golf Hotel & Spa resort, set on a 365-acre estate and boasting one of the UK’s largest spas, an 18-hole championship golf course and multiple restaurants including fine dining options.

Let's Walk By the River

This elegant cottage in the ancient town of Pickering had us on the private outdoor terrace alone. But step inside, and this home keeps on surprising. 

We'd call it a love nest for two, but it's just too big for that. Crash out in the snuggly living room, with rattan accents and statement lighting, bringing a dash of modernity. Rustle up a meal in the made-for-action gallery kitchen. Then settle down for a tête-à-tête and evening meal in the separate dining room, with french doors leading out onto that terrace. 
When legs are weary after days exploring the Yorkshire Dales, sink into the enormous freestanding bath, and upstairs, a luxurious bedroom awaits to bank a peaceful night's sleep. 

Just outside this home, wander-worthy cobbled streets lead down to a medieval castle and the town's very own steam railway station to transport you back in time (both less than five minutes on foot). 

There's plenty to do in the lands beyond, too, if you'd rather up the ante. The North York Moors national park is just a three-minute drive away (forty minutes on foot). 

And when thoughts turn to food, there are some delightful pubs just moments away. And a charming tearoom for your fix of Yorkshire Fat Rascals is dangerously close - it's just below your door.

Pat-a-Cake

An eleven-minute drive to the bustling town of Hexham (or just over thirty minutes to the metropolis of Newcastle), this delightful cottage offers a secluded, rural retreat in the north of England. The setting is postcard-perfect – a white picket fence, traditional iron lamppost, and handmade stone wall surround this cute and cosy home. As you stroll down your paved entrance, you’ll notice your manicured lawn, flowerbed, and dining patio. On a sunny day, it’s the ideal spot for a picnic. Or on a chilly evening, it’s even better for stargazing with a hot toddy in hand. Inside, the living space is a welcoming mix of old and new. The stylish, light-grey kitchen is understated and modern. But we love the traditional countryside features such as flagstone flooring and a sandstone, inglenook fireplace with a wood-burning stove. You feel like you've gone back in time when you’re stoking the flames with the cast-iron tools, and adding fresh logs from the wicker basket. And there’s plenty of history to discover outside the home too – take a thirty-five-minute walk to the 2000-year-old Chesters Roman Fort and Museum on Hadrian’s Wall.

Sandstone Hearth

Modern, stylish and in the heart of charming Whitby, this home ticks all the boxes for a memorable stay on the North Yorkshire coast. Honeycomb print livens up licks of trendy grey and we particularly loved the subtle nods to Whitby’s history and maritime identity in the living space and bedroom. A dining table with zesty yellow chairs takes centre stage – come together for a home-cooked breakfast and hot cups of tea before throwing on your sun hat and heading to the seaside. You’re a ten-minute walk from the beach – fifteen if you stop for an ice cream. Cross the River Esk and climb the 199 steps to reach the famous Abbey. With all of that exploring, you’ll have worked up quite an appetite, so pick up a fish supper from an award-winning chip shop and enjoy overlooking the harbour. 

Beehive Cottage

Once you've wandered about this home nestled away in the North Yorkshire countryside for the first time, it probably won't come as a surprise to learn that it was once a hotel. The vast size of the building and its grounds partially give the game away, but there's also something about how the communal areas are arranged, especially the pool table and bar that make it an especially sociable space.

You'll also get a sense of the home's heritage pretty quickly as well. Located on a farm that dates back to the 18th century, there's a strong rustic charm throughout the interior, from the wooden ceiling beams and stone archways to the open fireplace that's wonderful to retire next to after a long bout in the great outdoors. 

Speaking of which, there's a whole host of amenities on the grounds for when the forecast is being kind to you. As well as a large lawn and lots of equipment for playing games, there's plenty of seating for alfresco feasts, as well as a hot tub that's an idyllic spot for a nightcap, especially once the stars are out in the sky.

In the local area, there's a wealth of attractions to be discovered, from the Victorian spa town of Saltburn-by-the-Sea just two-and-a-half miles away to the Cleveland Way National Trail, which can be reached on foot and rewards those that follow the path with views of the dramatic coastal landscape.
