There's space for alfresco dining on the patio and you'll be surrounded by fields, so no need to worry about neighbours. Ideal for couples, families, or friend groups, this home is pet-friendly and close to countryside walks and some fantastic local pubs. There's a farm shop and café on the estate within walking distance, and if you're driving you'll be just five minutes from the centre of Midhurst. The estate holds plenty of activities for guests throughout the year, from fly fishing and polo to foraging and meditation.

From here, you can enjoy all the benefits of easy access to everything you need, with the tranquillity of a rural setting. Your hosts have designed the entire apartment with the needs of their guests in mind. The three individually decorated, stylish bedrooms offer luxurious accommodation for up to six people on the first floor. Plus, there's a sofa bed in the studio for an additional two guests. The top floor is more vibrant, with bold colours and eye-catching design, including what we would usually call floor-to-ceiling windows, except these ones take over half of the roof as well. The kitchen is equipped with everything the savvy chef might need to rustle up delicious group dinners. Step onto the streets of the historic market town of Petworth, and you'll find antique shops, cafes and the National Trust Petworth House and Park. Slightly further afield, you're a mere twenty minutes from glorious Goodwood – famous for its historic racetrack and Festival of Speed – and half an hour from the coast at Climping. There are so many events locally that it's well worth a bit of research before you arrive.

As the sun sets, it’s a choice between the circular or square hot tub, both bubbling away beneath stringed lights. Here, you’re on the edge of the South Downs National Park, and bedroom windows overlook the estate’s hay meadow for a bit of tranquillity. Yet, the shops, pubs and coffee shops of Bosham village are a fifteen-minute stroll away where you’ll find wildlife-filled walks in the Chichester Harbour Area of Natural Beauty.

It’s on the edge of a wildlife meadow, so sessions on the private terrace come with the soundtrack of birdsong and a gentle summer breeze. Spot wildlife from the warmth of the private hot tub on the deck, or perhaps from the swing seat, strung up on the porch. 

The interior is a reflection of the wilderness location, with wooden artworks featuring fawns and birdlife on display in the cosy bedrooms. The window seat in the master makes for the perfect reading nook, overlooking the meadow, and there’s a desk in here should you need to work remotely. The vaulted, wood-beam ceiling is twisted with stringed lights for a fairytale effect and there’s plenty of room at the rustic wooden table for the group to dine inside (if you’re not enjoying an alfresco meal on the terrace, that is). Come evening time, the plush sofas in the living room are set around a wood-burning stove.

Despite its secluded location, you're just five miles from the perfectly preserved market town of Petworth – lined with charming cafes, classic pubs and plenty of antique shops. In fact, it's been crowned 'Best Antiques Town' and draws interior designers and serious collectors from all over the country, so you better start clearing some space.

It’s not often that a home in England has a backyard to rival a Tuscan retreat or Californian hideaway, but the hot tub here sets the lavish tone, and the full outdoor kitchen keeps it going. Inside, tufted leather sofas invite you to sit back as a family amidst the striking equine artworks as a fire crackles in the wood-burning stove. We particularly love the barn-style sliding doors that offer a reminder of the building’s former life as a stable. The indoor kitchen is a delight to cook in, designed country-style with a big range cooker, yet modern feeling in slate grey. If you want to get out and explore the area you’ll find a pleasing mix of rural walking routes in the surrounding hills, and the quaint coffee shops, local pubs and shops of Bosham village a fifteen-minute walk away. The centre of Chichester is just a ten-minute drive away too.

A timber cabin surrounded by meadows and woodland might sound like a back-to-basics retreat, but at this home in rural Sussex, guests will have a wealth of luxuries at their disposal.

This is before you've even entered the home, as well. Out on the decked terrace, there's a hot tub from which you can enjoy the tranquillity of the local area, as well as a sofa and swing seat. When the sun goes down, there are festoon lights to turn on, plus a charcoal barbecue and fire pit to keep you fed and warm.

If the temperature dips a little too low, there's a wood-burning fireplace inside the home, as well as plenty of cosy blankets and board games. Inside, the design is rustic in places, as with the weathered wood dining table, but the sleek black kitchen and stylish bedrooms are nothing but modern.

When it comes to filling up your itinerary, there's so much to see and do nearby. The sprawling South Downs National Park starts a minute's drive to the north, while the Chichester Harbour Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty sits a similar amount of time in the opposite direction. The town of Bognor Regis and its beach can be reached in twenty-five minutes.

Three is also a sweet little garden and private parking is included in your stay. From here, it’s just a short walk into the heart of Funtington, while Chichester and Goodwood are just a short drive away.

While this Grade II listed Elizabethan home may have begun its life as a working farmhouse, there's no need to muck in these days. In fact, you won't need to lift a finger – your host can organise a daily maid service and a private chef to take the reins in the made-for-action kitchen.

Summer mornings call for lazy brunches in the orangery before padding outside to discover the home's one hundred acres of lakes, gardens, and woodland rivers. It's all going on here with a children's play area, croquet lawns, and tennis court at the ready. 

In winter months, the traditionally English interiors of the vast sitting room and dining area create a delightful homey feel, and the mighty double aspect fireplace will keep everyone toasty. 

A home perfectly suited for large group getaways – four of your guests can spill out into the old diary next door, reimagined into a smart guest annex for that extra privacy. And over in the main house, the bedrooms can only be described as suites, with each boasting a sitting room and en-suite bathroom.

When it's time for a change of scene, take a stroll into Kirdford (twenty minutes) to pick up a paper from the village shop and grab a swift pint at the local gastropub. Or jump in the car to the charming market town of Petworth (a ten-minute drive away) for a mosey about the shops and cafes.

Located right in the heart of Arundel, this Grade-II listed Victorian townhouse has stunning views over the castle and the Gothic cathedral on top of the hill. Originally designed and built by Joseph Hansom (the architect behind Arundel Cathedral), there are plenty of traditional features inside to admire. Modern gadgets like a flat-screen smart TV and slick wine fridge are seamlessly incorporated into the decor alongside original fireplaces, windows and chandelier-hung ceiling roses. We loved the mix of furniture, with individual pieces specially selected to fit each room, as well as the charming courtyard garden. Overall, we felt the home was warm, inviting, comfortable and very clean. Add in the location – just a two-minute walk from the high street – and it's a winner. Arundel is quaint and charming with pretty shops, art galleries, pubs, coffee shops and a fairytale castle to discover. Right by the river Avon and near to excellent walks in the South Downs, you're also close to great spots on the South Coast – it's less than twenty minutes to Worthing and about a forty-minute drive from Brighton. This is a lovely option for a family looking to linger for a while and enjoy a slower pace of life, within easy driving distance of the seaside.

This former bakery has plenty of character and charm, making it a solid option for an escape to West Sussex. Built in the 1800s, it's been well maintained, renovated to a high standard and tastefully decorated throughout. We loved the original features (like the sash windows, fireplaces and bakers’ oven); good-size modern kitchen, with a central island for chatting over a glass of wine; king-size beds with crisp, fresh linens; and the sweet courtyard garden: a real little sun trap. The home's location, right in the heart of the town of Arundel, gives easy access to coffee shops, pubs and independent shops – particularly for those who love browsing for art and antiques – as well as stunning views over the famous castle as well. You’re just a few minutes drive to great spots on the South Coast – less than 20 to Worthing; 40 into Brighton – making this a great spot, whether you're into sightseeing or just atmospheric and cosy places to stay.

Should you need to work remotely, there’s a desk in the top floor bedroom, though the wi-fi can be a little temperamental up there, so you may want to bring a personal hotspot device.

Location-wise, you’re perfectly placed for hikes and bike rides in the surrounding countryside and for adventures further afield, the market town of Farnham is 11 miles away and historic Winchester is a 20-mile drive.

One of a collection of three cottages on a thirteen-acre working farm in West Sussex, this home is nowhere near as rustic as these details might suggest. Step behind the front door and you'll find an interior that's contemporarily styled with a few quirky touches.

The stark white walls and sleek tiling make for a blank canvas against which the colourful cushions and hand-painted kitchen chairs really pop off. As well as that, the modern grey kitchen and pristine bathrooms are a world away from the back-to-basics country cottages that pepper the map in these parts – the rolltop bathtub in particular is sure to make a lot of guests very happy.

When the weather's on your side, there's a private outdoor space with an alfresco table and barbecue, but it's also lovely to wander about the shared parts of the site. The hosts run a private stud and breed native ponies, so if you're lucky, you might see a foal or two during your stay.

The home is blessed when it comes to location, sitting almost equidistantly between South Downs National Park and the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty – as you might imagine, there's a wealth of walking routes to embark upon that start straight from the farm or just a short drive away.
