We're pretty sure that you won't find many cottages cuter than this. Built at the backend of the eighteenth century, this traditional weaver's house is Grade-II listed and you can see why. Inside, the wooden ceiling beams, exposed brickwork and stable door are full of rustic charm, while a log-burning fire and antique furnishings add an extra level of cosiness. To the side of the home, there's a patio area complete with alfresco seating where you can enjoy a coffee and the surrounding tranquillity of West Yorkshire. Fans of Last of the Summer Wine — one of the longest-running sitcoms in the world — will love walking around the local town of Holmfirth where it was filmed. The Peak District is only a ten-minute drive away too if you're in the mood for a long ramble.

The home itself combines a Scandi-chic vibe with touches of the 19th century. Our favourite spot has to be the dedicated playroom, or “kid’s cave” where bunting and hand-written notes cover the walls and there’s a big activity table to keep little hands occupied for hours. The Yorkshire Dales and its excellent walking trails are a similar distance. This home also has free on-street parking, making it super easy to head out for a day of adventures. Able to accommodate up to five guests, a few friends or a family will be well looked after here. Begin your mornings with a bite to eat in the light-filled living space or spill out into the garden for breakfast alfresco if the weather is on your side. For those who like to like to get out into nature, a ramble through the Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is in order – it’ll take you around an hour to get there by car. Culture buffs should make the twenty-minute drive into historic York for its ancient Minster and medieval Shambles. Finish the afternoon with a well-earned gin and tonic beside the pretty River Ouse.

Beyond this home’s landscaped garden, it’s nothing but fields as far as the eye can see. You’re in a tiny West Yorkshire village, just a short hop in the car from the natural wonders of the Peak District. The exterior is honey-stone perfection with a plant-filled garden providing an al fresco spot for drinks and lounging in the sunshine. Glass doors fold back from the dining room for meals that feel as though they’re outside. A modern interior – black walls and leather sofas – is a far cry from the cottage exterior, but doesn’t take away from the comfort of this country bolthole.

This is the kind of home you daydream about for years after returning home. It’s a one-of-a-kind home, the sort of thing you might see on Grand Designs. It’s tucked away in the rolling hillsides of Calder Valley, so there are breath-taking views at every turn. The home was once the boiler house of an 1840s paper mill, and has been newly refurbished into a wonder of design. 

The frontage is fully glazed, with floor-to-ceiling windows looking out over the woodland and river. However you plan on spending your visit, you’ll find that you lose hours here and there as you simply gaze out at the view. This is a peaceful sanctuary, the perfect place to get away from the hustle and bustle and really unwind. The Japanese deep soak bathtub is a marvel, keeping the water hotter for longer so you can luxuriate for hours after a hike. 

Your evenings can be whiled away on one of two patios, where you can sip wine and listen to birdsong. Once the sun has set, step back inside for a cosy evening of board games. This home is quirky and luxurious – you’ll be planning your return before you’ve even unpacked your bags at home.

Tucked into a sheltered, wooded valley, this picturesque cottage has a quiet, countryside feel that makes it the deal place for a secluded family retreat. Originally built in the mid-17th century, this striking farmhouse was subsequently acquired by the wealthy Wainhouse family and split into five cottages to house their dyers. The current host's family has lived in this cottage for two-and-a-half centuries and — save for some modern gizmos in the kitchen and a pristine white bathroom — the space hasn't changed all too much in that time. The ceiling beams, exposed stone walls and original doors remain, while the gas-fired cast iron stove in the inglenook fireplace is a fitting addition given the history. There's a lovely flower-filled garden at the front of the property, which might seem odd until you realise that it's south-facing and receives plenty of sunshine — when it decides to make an appearance in this corner of Yorkshire. When it does, there's a whole lot to see and do nearby, including countless historic sights, such as Wainhouse Tower on the Wainhouse Heritage Trail four minutes' walk away, and Shibden Hall reached in just under an hour on foot. Alternatively, the charming town of Hebden Bridge takes around a quarter of an hour to reach in the car and the Peak District starts half an hour's drive from your front door.
