At Ullswater Lake, the second biggest in the Lake District, you’ll find a diverse range of landscapes and activities as you hike around its enormous perimeter. From the quaint village of Pooley Bridge, with traditional pubs and cute restaurants, take a fourteen-minute stroll to reach an altogether different scene – an isolated, romantic boathouse. As you arrive, its stone walls and wooden balcony look gloriously rustic. You could even plan to arrive by boat and pull up to the private jetty. From every angle, the surroundings of this home are striking – leafy trees, the glistening lake, and rolling mountains across the water make this setting feel quite special. Inside, the traditional theme continues with chunky beams and vintage furniture. We love the glossy, lacquered wooden pieces in the lounge, as well as the understated chandelier bringing a romantic glow in the evening. Take a look around while you wait for the wood-burning stove to heat up – the bedroom is quite magnificent. A luxurious cushioned headboard, freestanding copper bathtub, and private balcony set over the water are just a few of the fabulous features. Wrap up in your fluffy bathrobes and settle into lakeside living.

When a home is surrounded by beautiful scenery, the interior really has to up its game in order to stand a chance of being noticed and thankfully that's the case with this address. Large floor-to-ceiling windows let in ample amounts of natural daylight, which dances pleasingly off the wooden floors. Added to that, we liked the kitchen finished in a fetching shade of purple, the cosy wood-burning stove in the living room and the smart-looking bathrooms. Combined all together, it's almost enough to distract you from the stunning view of Lake Ullswater watched over by undulating hilltops. When you're in the mood to swoon, there's a terrace complete with alfresco seating so you can dine with this sweeping panorama in front of your eyes. The property itself sits on the Ullswater Way — a walking route that goes around the water — and you can easily reach other natural landmarks on foot. Aira Force waterfall, for instance, takes just over an hour and a half.

This charming home is in the Falls development in old Ambleside, just a five-minute walk from Ambleside yet in a remarkably peaceful setting. The home overlooks the Stockghyll Gorge, so the sound of water cascading down the rocks becomes the soundtrack to your stay – there are two terraces to enjoy this from, one of which has a barbecue. There are many delightful walks that you can set off on straight from the front door, so you won’t need to use your car much after your arrival. We love this home and think you will too.

With an elevated position, this apartment has wonderful views over the golf course and Morecambe Bay. The home is housed in a historic building dating from 1897, so as you'd expect, this home has character features such as double-height vaulted ceilings. We love the mezzanine games room with its pool table, and there's plenty of room to entertain your family and friends. There's a claw-footed bath in the main bedroom's en-suite, too, perfect for a soak after a stroll around the estate's 4 acres of grounds. There's also a shared barbecue area with tables and chairs – ideal for warm summer evenings. Other attractions nearby include the Brown Robin Nature Reserve and the town of Grange-over-Sands.

This home is a superb base for a family wanting to explore the Lake District while staying in style. It’s been lovingly renovated and redecorated, shaped into a calming, welcoming home-from-home. It has the feel of a traditional cosy cottage but all the modern amenities you might want for a stress-free stay. There’s a patio outside and a home cinema, so little ones will be happy. We think grown-ups will enjoy the elegant kitchen and dining space, as well as the deep bathtub – perfect after a day of hiking. The home is in the quaint village of Newton-in-Cartmel, surrounded by rolling hills and scenic countryside. What more could you hope for?

One glaring error will hit you the moment you step inside this beautiful cottage – that you haven't booked for long enough. The interior strikes just the right balance between countryside style and more urban chic. So while you'll find a Shaker-style kitchen, a warming wood burner and the welcoming cottage feel, there are plenty of pop art prints, eye-catching tiles and mid-century-style furniture that lends it a more contemporary flair. Upstairs, the three bedrooms are individually decorated, but all are exceptional and luxurious, with pristine white towels and bathrobes provided. That said, only the master comes with an in-room freestanding tub, which certainly elevates it in our eyes. Set in glorious countryside, sandwiched between the North Pennines AONB and Lake District National Park, this home offers fantastic views from its enclosed garden. Topped off with a steaming hot tub, which has plenty of space for six people, it's a truly fabulous place to relax. There are plenty of walks along the trails and footpaths that crisscross the Cumbrian countryside. Circular routes offer a varying degree of challenge depending on preference. Still, the leisurely twenty-five-minute stroll to the Shepherds Inn in Langwathby is our favourite kind of country walk – one with a pub at the end. Despite the feeling of seclusion, you're only four miles from Penrith, so it's easy enough to stock up on essentials when needed.

This classic yet contemporary home is just a few minutes' walk from the centre of Ambleside and perfectly placed to capture a picturesque glimpse of the steeple of St Mary's Church rising above the trees. Once you arrive and park the car, we love that there's little reason to move it again as you can find everything you need on your doorstep. However, if you do decide to explore further afield, the home is only a ten-minute drive from the head of Windermere, meaning that exploring the Lake District is as easy as hopping in the car with a picnic. And when you return from the day's adventures, stroll down to one of the country pubs for dinner and a restorative pint of ale, or simply flop down in that spacious living room.

This charming barn conversion in the peaceful village of Orton is ideal for anyone looking for a restful escape in the Cumbrian countryside. If you’re staying with furry friends, you’ll need to keep an eye on them in the garden due to the livestock in the adjacent field.

Step back in time with a stay in this Victorian manor. Set on a private estate, with surrounding countryside views, it’s the picture of a countryside escape. When you can pull yourself away from the scenery, there’s also a cinema and games room. There’s plenty of space to spread out, including a snug, dining area, and living area. The living space is a little dated, but we think it adds to the traditional charm. Being a Victorian home, expect some low ceilings and uneven floors. The garden is on multiple levels, too, but it’s a great spot for the children to run around. Just keep an eye on them around the woodlands – there are a few fallen trees.

Ambleside is a picturesque village that marks the head of Windermere – England’s largest natural lake – but you could be forgiven for thinking that this modern pad was located in a cosmopolitan city. The interior is luxurious yet simple, following the motto “less is best”. Each piece of furniture has been carefully selected, from the floating bar stools to the curved standing tub. We love the colour palette, which blends soft blues with sunshine yellow. The kitchen tiles light up the open-plan living space and create the perfect cooking space. You can make the most of the Neff appliances by whipping up an evening feast. This home is located above a chocolate shop so expect to get the occasional whiff of sweetness (and constant cravings!). Luckily the host provides complimentary chocolates for you to pocket as you head into the Lake District for a day of hiking.

But remember to mind your head on the low beams. What's more, pets are welcome to stay, though they can't jump on the furniture or leave pawprints upstairs.

Out in the heart of the Cumbrian countryside, this cosy cottage sits right between the Lake District National Park, the Yorkshire Dales and the North Pennines AONB. It’s safe to say there’s no shortage of walking trails over fields and fells, hills and heather-clad dales. It’s a twenty-minute walk (or four-minute drive) to the village of Langwathby with its train station, village shop and handful of pubs and a coffee shop. Further afield, you’ll find plenty to see and do in Penrith, a ten-minute drive away. A classic rose-stone exterior greets you on arrival, but it’s the inside of this home that really impresses. Walls of reclaimed wood, exposed stonework and a vaulted ceiling in the living room are simply stunning. There’s a wood-burner to keep things cosy and each piece of furniture – headboards made from old pallets, a striking faux-bird lampshade and old bronze keys in the doors – feels handpicked. If the glorious free-standing slipper tub in the master bedroom doesn’t invite you for a dip, perhaps the wood-clad hot tub outside can sooth sore feet after a day in the hills. There’s nothing but the bubbles, the lawn, fields and the lake in the distance out here.

This charming cottage is a perfect base in beautiful Ambleside. It’s a cosy home for four, ideal for a family or two couples. We love the log burner, which you can curl up beside after spending the day exploring the Great Outdoors – you can set off on excellent hikes right from the front door. There’s also a patio garden, a splendid spot for a glass of wine or a morning cuppa. There are plenty of shops, restaurants, and bars nearby, and Lake Windermere is a short stroll away.

With jaw-dropping views over Lake Ullswater and a private shoreline and jetty, it's clear what caught our eye about this 1900s gatehouse. There's an alfresco terrace to soak in the lakeside views with barbecues. But should the weather turn, the vistas are just as impressive curled up beside the wood-burning stoves indoors, and the games room will keep little ones busy. Set in the sleepy hamlet of Watermillock, besides two traditional pubs and a watersports centre, little else is within walking distance. However, the village of Pooley Bridge, with a cluster of shops and restaurants, is just a 3-mile drive.

The Lake Gatehouse

Once the hunting lodge for the Duke of Norfolk, this home in the Cumbrian countryside has a sweeping view of Ullswater and the surrounding fells. To make the most of the vantage point, the open dining and living room is up on the top floor, so you can dine and recline with a sublime view – perfect with the wood-burner crackling away. The covered balcony was made for sunny days and the ground-floor bedrooms have French windows leading to a cobbled patio and lawn. We dare you to find a traditional Yorkshire Dales cottage more charming than this, folks. Tucked away on the edge of a pretty green in the hamlet of Newby and close to the conservation village of Clapham, the setting is idyllic. Mooch along to the café down the road for hearty breakfasts, or a smidge further, into Clapham (four-minute drive or half-an-hour stroll) with its cheese shop (this is Wensleydale territory), delightful independent gift shops, and a traditional pub for real ale and a warm welcome.  

When it’s time to dive into the great outdoors, you’re right beneath Ingleborough, one of the famous Three Peaks. Follow the countless bridle paths just moments away, leading to lakeside nature trails, mature woodlands, spectacular limestone caves, and eventually, the summit of Ingleborough.

When it’s time to come back down to earth, this elegant home with a pedigree going way back to 1620 delivers all the cottage feels with flagged stone floors, exposed beams, and quirky little nooks. You'll have country pubs and boutiques on your doorstep in Settle. While we recommend hiring a car to tour the Yorkshire Dales, finding an empty parking spot nearby might be tricky.

Start your day in the garden with coffee and end it with a glass of locally-produced cider. There’s plenty of space for your group here – including a main living room and a snug – both with fireplaces so you can keep cosy during the colder season. Here to hike the trails? Why not walk along Devils Bridge, into the wooded gorge and admire the impressive views of the 300ft Mynach Waterfalls?

This annexe home is the ideal bolthole for couples or solo travellers looking to surround themselves with stunning nature. With beautiful views over the working farmland and rolling hills from the upstairs balcony and a garden complete with a stream and plenty of shaded reading nooks, you’ll have everything you need to disconnect and unwind. Inside, a fireplace is a nice touch too – ideal for cooler evenings with a glass of wine. When you’re ready to explore, there’s plenty of hiking and cycling routes nearby, and Alston is easily reachable by car where you’ll find ample shops, fascinating history and fabulous views of the North Pennines.

This detached barn conversion is located in a quiet hamlet and offers panoramic views over the Cumbrian countryside. Outside, there’s a decked area for lunches in the sunshine and an enclosed garden for four-legged friends. Inside, the living area is kept warm with a wood-burning stove. If we had to be picky, we’d say the bathroom could do with a refresh, though it functions fine. The Cambrian Way passes by the front of the home, making the place ideal for walkers. Plus, the bustling market town of Ulverston, which holds a twice-weekly market, is a ten-minute drive away.

Perfect for families or two couples, this home is a comfortable base for four. It’s in the village of Casterton, on the edge of the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales, just a five-minute drive from the popular market town of Kirkby Lonsdale. This home is cosy and attractive, equipped with everything you might need – there’s even a balcony and a garden. The local pub is a two-minute walk away, and there are two golf courses just a few minutes away.
