This is one of those rare homes that are just as relaxing outside as it is inside. The interior of the garden apartment has been finished in a cleansing shade of white that feels instantly soothing and there's also a fireplace in the living room that's ideal for gathering around during the colder months. Out through the back door, however, is a wonderfully green space where you can sit out underneath the pergola and feel the sun on the skin — we're nothing if optimistic. There are tall trees lining the borders that offer a little bit of privacy as well as flourishing plant beds. If it gives you a bit of inspiration to head out and explore more of the great outdoors, you're in a wonderful position. Coastal walking routes in Arnside and Silverdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty can be reached in seven minutes' drive, while Lake Windemere takes thirty-five minutes to reach.

Stay awhile at this stunning Grade II Listed 18th Century residence, located on the main road between the Lake District National Park's villages of Staveley and Ings – and just a five-minute drive from Lake Windemere. Before you've even set foot through the majestic fifteen-panelled entrance door, you know this isn't your average holiday home. Eyes immediately draw to the stunning sweeping oak staircase, with two panoramic windows revealing a wooded garden that beckons for you to relax in. Inside, this exquisite home comes with all the period trimmings – original feature alcoves, parquet wooden flooring, sash windows, panelled walls, and antique furnishings galore. When a home is surrounded by beautiful scenery, the interior really has to up its game in order to stand a chance of being noticed and thankfully that's the case with this address. Large floor-to-ceiling windows let in ample amounts of natural daylight, which dances pleasingly off the wooden floors. Added to that, we liked the kitchen finished in a fetching shade of purple, the cosy wood-burning stove in the living room and the smart-looking bathrooms. Combined all together, it's almost enough to distract you from the stunning view of Lake Ullswater watched over by undulating hilltops. When you're in the mood to swoon, there's a terrace complete with alfresco seating so you can dine with this sweeping panorama in front of your eyes. The property itself sits on the Ullswater Way — a walking route that goes around the water — and you can easily reach other natural landmarks on foot. Aira Force waterfall, for instance, takes just over an hour and a half.

There's an alfresco terrace to soak in the lakeside views with barbecues. Set in the sleepy hamlet of Watermillock, besides two traditional pubs and a watersports centre, little else is within walking distance. Overlooking the clear waters of a deep lake that's famous for its scuba diving and open water swimming, this charming home is a real find. Built on the edge of the former quarry, it's one of only a handful of lodge-style homes in this exclusive spot. It's bound to appeal to lovers of the great outdoors, with walking and cycling routes nearby, and it's just a stone's throw from the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales. It's set in a private lane, and while we love the stylish, modern interiors, we couldn't get enough of the lake views from the terrace. With a private hot tub to sink into and a fire pit, it's the perfect spot as the sun sets. Inside, there's a contemporary fireplace and a huge TV, so getting cosy shouldn't be a problem, and we love the sociable, open-plan layout. You can cook in the fabulous kitchen and eat at the dining table – perhaps with the bi-fold doors open. Here you'll be just a twenty-five-minute drive from Lancaster and Morecombe, with the little village of Over Kellet just down the road. It's just fifteen minutes by car to the vast beaches of nearby Morecombe Bay.

At Ullswater Lake, the second biggest in the Lake District, you’ll find a diverse range of landscapes and activities as you hike around its enormous perimeter. From the quaint village of Pooley Bridge, with traditional pubs and cute restaurants, take a fourteen-minute stroll to reach an altogether different scene – an isolated, romantic boathouse. As you arrive, its stone walls and wooden balcony look gloriously rustic. You could even plan to arrive by boat and pull up to the private jetty. From every angle, the surroundings of this home are striking – leafy trees, the glistening lake, and rolling mountains across the water make this setting feel quite special. Inside, the traditional theme continues with chunky beams and vintage furniture. We love the glossy, lacquered wooden pieces in the lounge, as well as the understated chandelier bringing a romantic glow in the evening. Take a look around while you wait for the wood-burning stove to heat up – the bedroom is quite magnificent. A luxurious cushioned headboard, freestanding copper bathtub, and private balcony set over the water are just a few of the fabulous features. Wrap up in your fluffy bathrobes and settle into lakeside living.

This quaint Lakeland cottage couldn’t get cosier if it tried. Beautifully renovated, this period cottage in the small hamlet of Clappersgate is rich in history and comfort. We love the traditional beams, wood-burning fireplace and AGA range cooker that make this home feel like a true rural retreat. 

Mornings here are particularly lovely. Your plush bed will be hard to get out of, but the views of Lake Windermere peeking in through the curtains will be sure to encourage you up. Sip your coffee out on the patio, listen to the bird songs and feel the warm morning sun on your face. The country-style kitchen is a pure delight to enjoy a hearty breakfast in – you’ll need some fuel for walking the local trails after all. And once you’ve returned home, boots glazed with Lake District earth, nothing will feel quite as comforting as stretching out on the sofa, feet toasting by the crackling wood burner. 

This area is rich in history and nature. Lake Windermere is a short drive away, where you can rent a rowing boat and contemplate the surroundings that Beatrix Potter’s novels took their inspiration from, or head to the World of Beatrix Potter to see the stories brought to life. The Ambleside Roman Fort, built in the 2nd century under Hadrian’s rule, is just a short drive away. While for cyclists, routes run all around the Langdales, with impressive views of the mountainous peaks and running rivers.

Once the dwelling of the estate's groundskeeper, this Lake District property has been refurbished to become a contemporary countryside getaway.

Inside, the design could definitely be described as minimalist, with walls painted in soothing whites adorned only by a few well-chosen pieces of artwork, a sleek kitchen and a preference for simple wooden furnishings. The wood-burning fireplace situated in an archway between the living room and dining area is sure to keep the whole ground floor warm and toasty.

But what about during those balmy months in which a roaring fire isn't necessary? The alfresco dining table on the terrace is sure to see some use during this time, as is the barbecue. You'll probably want to work up an appetite first, however, and there's an onsite heated swimming pool and an activity centre offering everything from watersports, 4x4 off-road driving, clay pigeon shooting, archery, axe-throwing or bushcraft.

If you're after something a little more sedate, there are plenty of walking routes that start from the site, including one to the cute village of Hawkshead about ninety minutes away on foot.



The Keeper

In a part of the UK with such stunning scenery, it really pays to have a home with some outdoor space here. Luckily, from this apartment's balcony, you get beautiful views of Lake Windermere and the hills surrounding the waters.

If it's ever too cold to use this space, you can head back inside and sit by the bay window, from which you get a similarly swoon-worthy panorama. Once you can tear your eyes away, you'll probably notice that the interior looks pretty modern — that's because it underwent a complete refurbishment in late 2021. The large kitchen and its collection of top-of-the-range appliances are particularly impressive, as are the pristine bathrooms.

When you're in the mood to see what the Lake District has to offer, you're in an excellent position to do so. Stock Ghyll Force waterfall is half an hour's walk away, while Rydal Cave can be reached in under ten minutes' drive. The nearby town of Ambleside has a cinema, cafes and even a Roman fort to explore, too.

What's better than a stay in a luxurious Plum-worthy home? A stay in two luxurious Plum-worthy homes – of course. This twin listing combines two of our homes – Brockram Barn & Keld Barn – totalling eight bedrooms which can accommodate up to sixteen guests. The sprawling outdoor space and the fact that it's set over two properties means that there's plenty of room to catch a moment for yourself, even during a large family get-together or a company offsite. But, of course, if you want to come together, there's ample space for that too. The interiors are decorated in a modern country style, with soaring ceilings, beautiful exposed beams and stunning stone floors. Both homes have huge common areas and large connected gardens where you can sit back with a glass of something special and watch the sun sink over the Cumbrian countryside. If the urge to explore should hit, then you've got the Yorkshire Dales, North Pennines and Lake District within a thirty-minute drive, while the port town of Middlesbrough is a little over an hour away.

Surrounded by open countryside, this lodge is an ideal Cumbrian retreat. There’s a sunny decked terrace and a hot tub for relaxing and taking in the countryside views. Inside, there are some little luxuries like the Hotel Chocolat Velvetiser for the perfect hot chocolates. You won’t be able to sit in front of the roaring log burner with them, though, as the stove is electric. If you like long country walks, this place is perfect. It’s situated in Culgaith which provides easy access to the Lake District and North Pennines. Or have a chat with your host (who lives next door) about a spot of private fishing.

This delightful apartment is perfectly placed in the heart of Ambleside, just a short walk from the shops, restaurants, and bars. The apartment was once a bank that has been lovingly converted into a cosy home-from-home, ideal for a couple. We love the views of Ambleside that can be admired from the living space and bedroom. Situated at the southern end of Coniston Water, the fifth largest of the lakes, this barn conversion blends contemporary comfort with period details. The farm is believed to date back to the 17th century, and the surrounding landscape hasn't changed much in all that time. Lace up your hiking boots and follow any number of footpaths that pass right by the front door. Lake Bank pier is just ten minutes on foot and is perfect for summer swims, canoe launches and paddle boarding.  Alternatively, head north to Coniston Boating Centre for boat hire and trips on the beautifully restored Victorian steam-powered Gondola.

One glaring error will hit you the moment you step inside this beautiful cottage – that you haven't booked for long enough. The interior strikes just the right balance between countryside style and more urban chic. So while you'll find a Shaker-style kitchen, a warming wood burner and the welcoming cottage feel, there are plenty of pop art prints, eye-catching tiles and mid-century-style furniture that lends it a more contemporary flair. Upstairs, the three bedrooms are individually decorated, but all are exceptional and luxurious, with pristine white towels and bathrobes provided. That said, only the master comes with an in-room freestanding tub, which certainly elevates it in our eyes. Set in glorious countryside, sandwiched between the North Pennines AONB and Lake District National Park, this home offers fantastic views from its enclosed garden. Topped off with a steaming hot tub, which has plenty of space for six people, it's a truly fabulous place to relax. There are plenty of walks along the trails and footpaths that crisscross the Cumbrian countryside. Circular routes offer a varying degree of challenge depending on preference. Still, the leisurely twenty-five-minute stroll to the Shepherds Inn in Langwathby is our favourite kind of country walk – one with a pub at the end. Despite the feeling of seclusion, you're only four miles from Penrith, so it's easy enough to stock up on essentials when needed.

Some of the Lake District’s most striking scenery can be found at Ullswater, with its mountainous landscape and unusual z-shaped, ‘ribbon lake’, which is the second largest in the region. But even better than simply visiting this beautiful spot, you can see it all from the windows of this lakeside home. Although it’s just a five-minute drive from the quaint town of Pooley Bridge, this home feels truly rural and isolated. Park up the 4x4 in the gravel drive and head into this warm and welcoming abode. Light up the wood-burning stove in the plush lounge, with its horseshoe sofa that can fit the entire family. Or you can even have your own private hideaway in the second sitting room, with yet another fireplace – this time a sleek, modern hearth set into the wall. For balmy English evenings, another space can be found outdoors, with your very own patio complete with comfy garden furniture. Alfresco drinking and dining will certainly be on the cards out here. While you can see the water from the comfort of your own home, it’s just a seven-minute walk down to Ullswater Marina.

The Ribbon Lake

Once a school, this home has kept many of its charming original features, from the oak floorboards to the arched windows with views over the gardens. Perfect for tranquil family breaks or a group of friends, the house has plenty of warm communal spaces, including a unique dining cubby for intimate dinners and a grand lounge with a toasty log-burning fire. On sunny days, nab a spot in the conservatory, which looks over River Lyvennet, or lounge in the gardens on the patio for al fresco drinks. Set in the small village of Crosby Ravensworth, the space is just a 300-metre stroll to the local pub, The Butchers Arms, which won a Good Food award in 2019. We love the options for walking here, whether that be following the trails from the house and into the Yorkshire Dales, or driving to the nearby North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) or to the Lake District national park. In an hour's drive, you will reach the iconic Lake Windermere – over 10 miles of water, and also the spot which inspired poet William Wordsworth and more recently, a song written by Taylor Swift.


Dales Stop

This warm and inviting home is in the grounds of the old vicarage estate, having originally been the stables. It’s nestled in the heart of the Lake District, between Lake Windermere and Esthwaite. The home boasts beautiful views down the valley towards Sawrey, Grizedale Forest, and the Old Man of Coniston. It’s just a short walk from Hill Top, Beatrix Potter’s home, and is surrounded by a wild meadow planted with fruit and nut tree orchards – this is certainly a picturesque spot for a romantic escape. We love the freestanding bathtub and the wood-burning stove of this comfortable, cosy home-from-home.

Walking in the Rain

This charming home is a splendid base for exploring the Lake District National Park. It’s tucked away in a peaceful valley so you can really unwind, but it’s just a twelve-minute drive from Kendal and fifteen minutes from Windermere. When you’re not out enjoying the Great Outdoors, you’ll be able to admire views of the surrounding countryside from the patio, or get cosy beside the log burner. The vaulted ceilings make the home feel roomy and welcoming, whether you’re visiting for a romantic break or as a small family. 

Coachhouse Cosy

This detached barn conversion is located in a quiet hamlet and offers panoramic views over the Cumbrian countryside. Outside, there’s a decked area for lunches in the sunshine and an enclosed garden for four-legged friends. Inside, the living area is kept warm with a wood-burning stove. If we had to be picky, we’d say the bathroom could do with a refresh, though it functions fine. The Cambrian Way passes by the front of the home, making the place ideal for walkers. Plus, the bustling market town of Ulverston, which holds a twice-weekly market, is a ten-minute drive away.

This charming apartment is tucked away behind the main market square of Ambleside. It offers the luxury and comfort of a hotel suite with the privacy of a self-catering holiday home – it’s the best of both worlds. The apartment is cosy and warm, ideal for a romantic break in the Lake District. Set off on hikes straight from the front door, and enjoy the convenience of being within walking distance of many of Ambleside’s restaurants, bars, and shops.

This home is a superb base for a family wanting to explore the Lake District while staying in style. It’s been lovingly renovated and redecorated, shaped into a calming, welcoming home-from-home. It has the feel of a traditional cosy cottage but all the modern amenities you might want for a stress-free stay. There’s a patio outside and a home cinema, so little ones will be happy. We think grown-ups will enjoy the elegant kitchen and dining space, as well as the deep bathtub – perfect after a day of hiking. The home is in the quaint village of Newton-in-Cartmel, surrounded by rolling hills and scenic countryside. What more could you hope for?

Recently renovated, the cottage has a new life as a home where high ceilings meets joyous splashes of colour and comfortable furnishings. A five-minute drive away lies the historic market town of Kirkby Lonsdale, where you're sure to pick up charming souvenirs and fresh local produce. It's easy to forget you're in North West England from this stunning home in Bowness-on-Windermere, as its modern mid-century interiors look straight out of '70s Hollywood. The grand living room is undoubtedly one of its main highlights as the pentagon-shaped window wall invites in floods of natural daylight and frames the backdrop of whimsical Lake Windermere in the distance. Here, you can kick back here in front of the fireplace, after fun-filled days of hiking, cycling or relaxing by the lake. When the weather is kind, take yourself outside on the balcony for some afternoon tea in the sunshine. 

While the Lake District presents a vast array of shops, pubs and restaurants to try out (the nearest pub is just 500 yards away), you won't find bars and clubs open until the early hours. That's why the entertainment features of this home have been carefully selected to ensure guests are having fun around the clock. From the basement spa and games room, you'll find not only a pool table but a private hot tub jacuzzi and an old school home cinema too.

The home is housed in a historic building dating from 1897, so as you'd expect, this home has character features such as double-height vaulted ceilings. We love the mezzanine games room with its pool table, and there's plenty of room to entertain your family and friends. There's a claw-footed bath in the main bedroom's en-suite, too, perfect for a soak after a stroll around the estate's 4 acres of grounds. There's also a shared barbecue area with tables and chairs – ideal for warm summer evenings. Other attractions nearby include the Brown Robin Nature Reserve and the town of Grange-over-Sands.

From this spot on the western edge of Windermere, you'll be able to enjoy the whole of the Graythwaite Estate – covering 5000 lakeside acres. Spend your days walking the many trails, soaking up the natural landscape, or pop along to the estate's on-site activity centre, where you can book anything from paddleboarding to a 4X4 adventure. And for lunch, head to the nearby villages of Hawkshead, Near Sawrey and Far Sawrey – all bursting with eateries and attractions – or take the ferry across to Bowness. It’s a twenty-minute walk (or four-minute drive) to the village of Langwathby with its train station, village shop and handful of pubs and a coffee shop. Further afield, you’ll find plenty to see and do in Penrith, a ten-minute drive away. A classic rose-stone exterior greets you on arrival, but it’s the inside of this home that really impresses. Walls of reclaimed wood, exposed stonework and a vaulted ceiling in the living room are simply stunning.
