From the moment you see the grand stone exterior and cobbled courtyard, you’ll know that this ever-so-charming home is steeped in history. It's a former malthouse that’s over 300 years old and filled with traditional features. When you step into the entrance hall, you’re entering through the large oak door onto the original cart-way, and as you start trying to choose which bedroom you want to lay claim to, you’ll be winding your way up a turret stairway with rope bannisters, surrounded by wooden beams and original fireplaces. The interior has been fully renovated, with a modern handmade kitchen, squishy sofas, and cute-as-a-button bedrooms. Sip your afternoon tea perched on the sunny window seat with a good book in hand (there's an extensive collection to choose from), while gazing at the expansive green views of the playing fields and village church in the backdrop. Elsewhere, the large 14-seater pine dining table will be the perfect spot to savour a slow dinner with the entire group. Although in the garden you'll notice a patio, complete with outdoor furniture, that’s ideal for wine and cheese nights – there's a large lawn and a range of outdoor games available too (including table tennis) for hours of early evening fun. You don’t have to go far to continue the historical theme, as the pub next door is one of the oldest in the country and has been the resting place for many a monarch visiting the area since the 15th century. The surrounding county town, Frome, just a fifteen-minute drive away, was voted one of the best places to live in the UK - explore the rich history, shop at independent boutiques, buy fresh produce at the local market or dine at one of the many eateries dotted around nearby.

Even before you enter, it’s clear that there’s something special about Faerie World. The high position of the cottage gives a heavenly view of the stream below, and you can hear the babbling water from the terrace, which is itself surrounded by flowers, and makes you feel like you’re in a fairytale. Once inside, the living room and bedroom don’t disappoint. The bedroom in particular, with its Farrow & Ball colours, stands out. The kitchen doesn’t have the same aesthetic charm, but that’s a small gripe, and shouldn't give you any cause for concern.

Make yourself comfortable on the sofa as you people-watch with a glass of wine, or catch up on work at the cosy desk space – better yet, peruse the tourist leaflets provided and plan the next day’s activities. Descend the bespoke Italian staircase and you’ll find yourself in the sleek kitchen where your hosts have provided a continental breakfast. Enjoy your pastries and cereal in the glass-framed dining room or outside in the private garden while you catch some rays. When it comes to relaxation, your hosts have gone above and beyond by dressing the luxury beds in Egyptian cotton sheets (there’s even a pillow selection between soft or medium-firm) and they’re more than happy to arrange a spa day for you at the nearby five-star hotel. When you’re not soaking up the refined atmosphere of your classy pad, go out and explore your surroundings. Cross Pulteney Bridge over the Avon (a three-minute walk), see where Vanity Fair was filmed at Laura Place Fountain (a two-minute walk) visit Bath Abbey (a seven-minute walk) and stroll around the Royal Crescent (a fifteen-minute walk). Classy. That's the word that springs to mind when we think of this recently refurbished apartment on Milsom Street in Bath. As soon as you walk through the elegant gated entrance with carved granite and mosaic tiling, you know you're in for a treat. The home is immaculately clean, polished and designed to a high standard. A raft of celebrity portraits taken by the owner lines the walls – a wonderful personal touch. Select a bottle from the wine cooler and relax in the spacious living room, which has a sense of occasion with its Charles Eames leather lounge chair and velvet sofa. This light, west-facing room has two large original sash windows with views over the courtyard and chimney pots. We were surprised by how peaceful this place is inside, considering it's located on one of Bath's main shopping streets. It really is an excellent base for exploring the city's centre and sights. There are lots of luxury and high-end boutiques, as well as restaurants and bars right on your doorstep, where you can enjoy a cocktail or relish a delicious lunch (The Botanist and Ivy Brasserie are opposite). For a day of pampering, Thermae Bath Spa is a five-minute walk, or explore Bath's jaw-dropping UNESCO World Heritage architecture, such as the Royal Crescent, a ten-minute stroll away. A great find – it's no wonder this home has impeccable reviews.

You’ll feel like royalty when you stay in this plush one-bed, and that’s not just thanks to the regal setting, on the Circus (formerly King’s Circus) – one of the city’s most famous Georgian terraces. Or the grandeur of the decor, all immaculate plush carpets, high ceilings and original fireplaces. It’s also the fact that the hosts treat their guests like kings. Welcome packs include wine, biscuits and chocolate; check in and bag storage are flexible; chefs, massages, dry cleaning and babysitters can all be arranged; they even created their own online app to guide guests to local food and drink options. Luckily for those who don’t want to cook (although there is a kitchen), there are dozens of the latter nearby. We recommend taking time to make the most of the West Country dining scene, as well as checking out museums, the nearby Theatre Royal, and the famous spa. After all that, you can return to take a rainfall shower, loll by the fire, and snooze in the comfy sleigh bed. No wonder the tourist board awarded this place a gold star. We'd give it one too.

After banking a peaceful night's sleep in the stylish bedrooms, get together around the dining table overlooking the shared courtyard for lazy breakfasts – the welcome hamper's sourdough loaf is the best thing since sliced bread. Or, if you'd after a big cook-up, your host can deliver fresh farm produce right to your barn door. 

When bellies are full and it's time to set off exploring, you won't have far to go. Just head into the local village of Avebury (a three-minute drive or half-an-stroll stroll) – it's an afternoon well spent with its traditional inn, charming shops, and of course, the Neolithic stone circle. Just be sure to make it home in time for some stargazing around the fire pit on the beautifully landscaped terrace that you'll share with the barn's other cottages. On a balmy evening, there's no finer place to be.

The home's location in the Lower Mill Estate means you'll have access to two shared heated swimming pools, playgrounds, soft play, tennis courts, a 3G multi-use games area, and a spa (we recommend booking treatments in advance). Further afield, nearby Cirencester is dotted with historic pubs and charming country boutiques and is just twenty minutes by car. Or for something a little nearer, you'll find the picturesque swimming lagoons and sandy beaches of Cotswolds Country Park are just a five-minute drive away.

Duckdown Lodge

Tucked away in the quiet village of Avening, this apartment welcomes you to a cosy Cotswolds getaway. Inside, the rooms are well-suited to couples and families. There's a sofa bed for two guests, which is available upon request. It’s worth noting the rooms are snug and the ceilings are low in parts, but you will find all the essentials needed for a refreshing stay. Outside, there are walking trails straight from the door and the nearest pub is just a five-minute stroll away. It’s also less than a ten-minute drive to the towns of Tetbury and Nailsworth.

The facilities are just a minute’s walk away and when you’re not enjoying a sauna or workout in the gym, you can savour the peace and quiet from your private deck, overlooking a small lake. We love the panoramic windows here which make the most of the water views, and with table football and a communal outdoor play area, kids are well catered for too. While you’d be forgiven for not wanting to leave the estate, if you do decide to venture out you'll discover lots of traditional Cotswold villages just a short drive away.

If you’re looking to experience the historic heart of Bath, this traditional Georgian townhouse delivers the perfect solution. Set across four floors, the rooms are well-suited to family gatherings with two cosy sitting rooms, a sociable kitchen and dining area as well as a small courtyard. There is no private parking available here, but there is a carpark nearby and you’ll find everything you could need within easy walking distance. It’s also just a short drive to Bristol and Glastonbury.

Occupying the top two floors of a classic Grade II Georgian terrace, this thoroughly modern pad puts you within minutes of countless sights, including the Roman Baths, Pulteney Bridge and Bath Abbey. It’s not just its stellar locale that caught our eye, though. Decorated and previously owned by a superyacht owner, the space is all about glossy polished finishes and bespoke designer details, from the Andrew Martin furnishings to the main bedroom’s cushions by Westwood and McQueen’s former textile designer. More luxe additions include a boiling water tap in the kitchen, the bathroom’s freestanding tub and Egyptian cotton bedding. What’s more, you’ve got access to a beautiful communal garden –  a reminder of the former orchard here tended by the Abbey’s Benedictine brethren.
