This ancient street, where the house is located, was once the medieval route into the city from the north. But today, it’s your route to luxe living in the city centre. A former jewellery shop, the quaint brick building still has quirky features and a creative soul. As soon as you step inside, the striking decor is sure to capture your imagination. Floor tiles with a star pattern give the space a Moorish vibe, an exposed brick alcove shows how the home has retained traditional architecture, but then modern elements such as the charcoal-grey kitchen cabinets bring you back to the 21st-century. Located right by the magnificent York Minster, this 18th-century townhouse enjoys a quiet yet central location. Families and friends alike will settle right in here and pets are welcome to join you, but thanks to its many stairs, low windows and trip hazards, young children will need supervision at all times. There is space to sit out with a drink or an alfresco meal in the small courtyard garden – this is overlooked by surrounding buildings and may not feel fully private. Self-check-in makes arrival easy and convenient, though the nearest parking spot is a short walk away. We think the best way to explore the area is on foot though, so having a car here isn't a necessity.

From here, you just need to cross the River Ouse to arrive at York's bustling city centre. This stunning York townhouse with a basement cinema and games room is located immediately off Bishy Road (voted Britain’s Best High street). The house sits right by the ancient walls and it's just an eight-minute walk to the city centre. 

Arriving at the house, you’re greeted with a freshly-baked cake and all the essentials for a cuppa. You can then snuggle up on one of the sofas in front of the wood-burning stove, or if it’s sunny sit out on the bistro seating in the private south-facing courtyard. The location is tough to beat – on the banks of the Foss River, tucked in amongst the trendy, global restaurants and boutique coffee shops of Walmgate. York’s historic attractions are at your fingertips with the stunning York Minster a seven-minute walk down atmospheric old streets, and the Jorvik Viking Centre a three-minute stroll. Inside, old sash windows let in plenty of natural light and you’ll find a stylish medley of slate grey and duck-egg blue keeping things contemporary. The cosy living room has plenty to entertain you after a day exploring the city (even an X-Box for rainy days) and the open-plan kitchen keeps the place spacious and sociable. Affectionally known as Bishy Road to locals, Bishopthorpe Road is home to an award-winning collection of independent shops and is the frequent venue for street parties. It's a great place to stay near if you want to see a more authentic side of York and as luck would have it, this house sits on a side street just off the famous thoroughfare. We can't really find anything to fault with the interior — the long, open living space on the ground floor is bright and welcoming thanks to a big bay window on one side and glass doors on the other. Go through these and you'll be greeted by a courtyard with seating for alfresco feasts in the summer months. For want of a better word, it's all very homely, which is exactly what you want when visiting a new city. If you fancy a jaunt into the historic centre, you can be on the other side of the River Ouse in under ten minutes on foot.

The interiors are just as gorgeous, but lean more towards modern than traditional. In the bright living space, you’ve got your own huge window and fabulous exposed brickwork at one end, then a stylish, understated kitchen at the other. In between, there’s a certain Scandi feel from the furniture, but you’re brought back to York with the colourful canvas of the historic cityscape above the plush sofa. Get the kettle on (before you get too comfy).

Modern, colourful and supremely comfortable, this apartment on the west side of the River Ouse is an excellent base from which to explore the best of York. Inside the home, it’s all sumptuous soft furnishings in the living space and sleek mod-cons in the kitchenette. After a cup of Yorkshire tea and a hunk of local Moggy cake, pull on your comfiest shoes and hit the streets. Whether you're a history buff, culture vulture or simply keen on exploring, you've got plenty of options to tickle your fancy.

You’ll find this contemporary, light-filled home in the village of Fulford, a five-minute drive from the centre of historic York. Inside, the place is open-plan and breezy, with cleverly placed skylights and white-washed walls adding a fresh and sleek feel throughout. The minimalist living area was our favourite spot to relax and the spacious patio is a treat on sunny summer mornings. Make your favourite meals in the bright kitchen or nip into the city to sample the tasty selection of bars, restaurants, tea rooms and cafes. If you fancy stretching your legs, we recommend following the River Ouse into York – it’ll take you around forty minutes if you go at a leisurely pace. Spend an afternoon exploring the web of medieval streets, admiring the soaring Minster’s Gothic architecture and walking the time-worn City Walls. At the end of another eventful day, sup real ale in oak-panelled taverns that have been serving revellers since the Tudor times.

This apartment has an ace up its sleeve — a huge wraparound balcony that has a superb view of the most famous building in the city, York Minster. There's space to sit out here with this wonderful backdrop, but don't worry if it's too cold, as the floor-to-ceiling windows running around the length of the living space ensures that it's possible to take it in while sitting indoors. 

The interior takes the best parts of 1970s design — the earthy colour palette, patterned wallpaper and natural materials — to create a space that's retro without feeling dated. For the cherry on the cake, the kitchen has plenty of surface space for cooking up a storm and a bathtub upstairs will help you relax after a long day of sightseeing, which is welcomingly easy to do from the central location. Five minutes' walk will get to Museum Gardens, while the same amount of time in the opposite direction will see you reach the medieval shopping street, York Shambles.

Nowhere is this fact more obvious than in the wooden ceiling beams in the living area and the timber frames seen in other rooms. Despite these prominent period features, the bulk of the interior is actually quite modern, with cleansingly white walls, en vogue wooden floorboards and a sleek white kitchen. It's a lovely place to return to after a day of learning about the city's interesting past. Five minutes' walk in one direction will take you to Micklegate Bar and the city walls, while the same amount of time in the opposite direction will see you reach the museum at Fairfax House

And outside, the suntrap terrace garden is a nice touch for evening drinks. If time is on your side, take the riverside walk into York’s centre along the River Ouse (a lazy forty-five-minute stroll). From your central location, even the furthest reaches of York city centre are no more than a fifteen-minute walk away, while the majority is just a five-minute stroll. Peppermint Patty

There's a timeless quality to this home, just a short walk from the city centre. Part of a period terrace, it's as pretty as a picture – both inside and out. You're spoilt for choice here, with two sitting rooms to choose between. Both super comfortable and classically furnished, there's the front room with its arched window and cosy sofas, and the former dining room with its armchairs and log burning stove. Giving the option of letting the youngsters have their own living space, it's a handy arrangement made possible by the kitchen extension. In this modern space, you'll have an excellent, fully kitted-out kitchen (hello range cooker!) and a dining area that opens out to the charming little courtyard. In the summer evenings, it's the perfect spot for dinner and drinks outside. With two good size bedrooms and a luxurious bathroom with a freestanding bathtub, we didn't think this warm, welcoming home could get any better. But it can – you're welcome to bring along your pet too. 

Bellflowers at Teatime

Bright and welcoming, this house is a great base for exploring historic York. The decked garden is a bonus for a city break, and the modern, clean interiors make for an attractive home-from-home. There’s plenty of room for everyone to dine together or unwind in the lounge, so you won’t feel crowded. Each room has an en-suite bathroom, so this is an ideal choice for a large group – you don’t want to be queuing for the shower when you could be meandering along the Shambles, just fifteen minutes away. 

The House of York

A recently converted landmark building within two minutes' walk of York Minster, the period exterior of this place doesn't give away the sleek, modern apartment inside. Offering all the comforts of home, you'll feel like a local in no time. With everything so new it's practically sparkling, you'll have a sociable, open-plan living space with a comfy sofa and a smart dining table, along with a high-spec contemporary kitchen area with all the kit you'll need to cook at home. Both bedrooms are stylish and each has a dedicated bathroom so there won't be any need to queue for the shower in the morning. Little luxuries include welcome treats, underfloor heating in the bathrooms and a funky remote control backlight behind the TV – to set the mood for the evening. The location couldn't be better either, with a walk of fewer than ten minutes into the city centre.

Month of Sundays

This stylish home is a brilliant option for a York getaway. Just a twenty-five-minute walk along the river from the iconic spires of York Minster, you'll be well-placed to explore this historic city. Start the day off with a morning stroll around Rowntree Park – it's just across the river – then make your way towards the restaurants, cafes, pubs and eateries and enjoy lunch in York's bustling city centre. Afterwards, visit Shambles Market for a bit of shopping or, if you consider yourself a history buff, have a look at the many museums and landmarks in town.

Following your jam-packed day of sightseeing, make your way back to this lovely homestead and get comfortable in the living area. The plump L-shaped sofa is perfect for sprawling – plop yourself down and enjoy a glass of wine before preparing a delicious dinner together in the kitchen. We can't help but swoon over the character features, from the hardwood floors to the stained glass front door. Every room oozes warmth and cosiness. 

On winter evenings, the wood-burner in the dining area is a welcome reprieve from the frosty air, while the charming conservatory is the ideal spot to while away a few hours with an engrossing book. We also adore the small private garden – during the summer, bring out a chair and dine alfresco under the Northern sunshine.

Give Me That Northern Soul

Now that's what we call a view. Looking directly onto the west front of York Minster, this apartment has one of the best outlooks in the city – and it's entirely yours to enjoy. View aside (if that's even possible), the rest of the apartment is a bright and charming place to relax. The simple pared-back style means that the scenery is front and centre, but sleek extras like the rainfall showers, Bluetooth speakers and a Nespresso machine are icing on the cake. It's comfortable and has plenty of space to hang out when you're not exploring. Speaking of, you're truly in the centre of York here. Not only is York Minster so close you can almost touch it, but the other historic areas are also a short stroll away. Shop for fresh produce, quirky crafts and vintage clothes in Shambles Market – a six-minute walk away – or grab a pint and some tasty pub grub at the local taverns. Restaurants, cafes, museums – you name it, you can walk to it, so there's no doubt that this apartment is perfectly placed for adventures.

Perched high on the fifth floor of a contemporary apartment building, the city vistas across the waterways of the River Foss and to the Howardian Hills beyond are second to none.
 
Whip up breakfast in the gadget-ladened kitchen then gather your ensemble at the dining table for a lazy morning feast. Curl up on the plush sofa with a cuppa and a good book – there's Netflix at the ready too, if that's more your style. Or sneak back to bed in the boutique-style bedrooms with freshly brewed coffee and open up the Juliet balcony doors. Wherever you choose to be, those bird's eye views of river life and the city's rooftops will be right there. 

And when the medieval city finally comes calling, you won't have far to go. Thanks to its privileged setting nestled within the city's medieval walls, all the must-see sights are walkable. Get off to a flying start at York Castle, just a six-minute saunter over the Foss River.

Only a ten-minute walk from York train station, this recently refurbished home is fresh and modern – the teal-accented, open-plan living and dining space is great for socialising. After a long day of exploring the city, where better to admire the historic sights than from the luxurious freestanding bath? Perfectly situated for a couple looking to discover the city, you can't beat this central apartment. 



If City Walls Could Talk

Founded in 71 AD, you might say that York is a rather old city. With Romans and Vikings both having staked claim to this glorious gem of Yorkshire, you’ll find historical intrigue everywhere you turn. However, an eight-minute walk from the incredibly well-preserved medieval shopping street, The Shambles, this studio apartment offers an altogether more modern side of the city. In a recently renovated development by the riverside, the setting is truly peaceful. You’ve got plenty of spots for relaxing inside too – try the huge, plush, Chesterfield sofa for size, or kick back in the cushioned bamboo armchair. A trendy exposed brickwork wall frames an enormous, arched sash window, illuminating the stylish living area and its quartz-topped kitchen. With a Klimt canvas up on the wall, as well as dainty plants placed around the home, plenty of thought has gone into the decor. And of course, being a studio, there are some impressive space-saving ideas. After an evening spent in a traditional local pub, sampling a few ales, come home and pull the bed down from the wall when you’re ready to rest your head.

Cask Ale

York is most well-known for its stunning cathedral, historic marketplace and city walls dating back to 71 CE. And this home, only a short walk from the city centre, has a direct view of the latter. On sunny days, admire the ancient stonework from your small patio, savouring a glass of wine as the evening draws to a close. It's an unparalleled view and we adore it – morning, noon or night, you'll want to spend every second dining alfresco and soaking up the views. The interior is modern and stylish, with lots of space to spread out and unwind. Sink into the squishy L-shaped sofa, do a spot of work from one of the two desks and whip up a meal in the pastel-coloured kitchen, which has everything you'll need for cooking. But when you want to explore your surroundings, you're just a ten-minute walk from York Minster, nine from the famous Betty's Tea Rooms and six from Shambles Market. With restaurants, pubs and plenty of local shops to browse, you'll have more than enough to keep you busy – and the private off-road parking is the icing on the cake.

Beyond The City Walls

Housed in a Grade II listed Georgian house dating back to 1901, this second-floor apartment may require a bit of climb to reach, but the views of York Minster and the ancient city walls are certainly worth it. Contemporary decor and an electric fireplace complete the snug living area, and access to the communal walled garden – also seen from the apartment – is a nice touch. Free on-site parking makes wider exploring a breeze, but you’ll find all of York’s main sights easily reachable on foot from this central spot, including York Minster, York City Walls and The Shambles. 


Minster Mine

A stay in York deserves a home that radiates history from its seams. This 16th-century apartment fits right in with the narrow, medieval streets around it and has an enviable view of York Minster. If that’s not a testament to how central you are, buzzing tearooms, trendy restaurants and cosy pubs are all on your doorstep. The building itself is a typical black and white, timber-clad home and inside you’ll find a potted history of the rooms from their design. Wood-panelled walls whisper of the 19th-century, while the gnarled old timber beams of the 16th-century show through too. The living room is a regal space, like the drawing rooms of times gone by, and has big sash windows, high ceilings and an upright piano for an evening sing-along. The kitchen has everything you need to make every meal of the day (perhaps using some of the fabulous produce from the artisan deli downstairs), and the dining area has a delightful antler and top-hat feature on the wall. Bedrooms are also a trip through history, tucked up in the eaves beneath darkwood beams. The master bedroom downstairs features a hand-made king-size bed for the perfect night's sleep. An extra bonus is the little outdoor seating area where you can catch a breath of fresh air and hear the bells of the Minster toll in the background. 

Saint Peter

The wraparound balcony affording views of the medieval city walls is taking all the limelight at this modern, bright apartment perched right in the heart of York's bustling centre. And rightly so. A home to be enjoyed in all seasons, in summer months, swing the doors right back and take breakfast outside on the suntrap veranda as you hatch plans for the day ahead. On wintery days, curl up on the deep, sumptuous sofa with a cuppa and lose yourself to views of the distant historic rooftops. And despite its central location, our guests love how quiet this home feels, meaning you'll be sure to bank a peaceful night's sleep. But when it's time to get out adventuring, you're closer to the bustle than you think. All the historical must-sees are within walking distance, including York Minister (sixteen minutes on foot) and the vibrant Shambles Market (ten minutes on foot). And when thoughts turn to food, you'll be surprised by the delicious global fare this city offers in its bustling restaurants. Just be sure to save room for a fat rascal scone from Betty's Café Tea Rooms (just fourteen minutes on foot) – no visit to York is complete without one.
