The stereotype linked to those from Yorkshire is that they're a straightforward bunch of people and they aren't afraid to say it how it is. This apartment in the centre of York is similarly no-nonsense and will ensure guests have a hitchless time in this idyllic part of England. The design is simple but effectively so, with the neutral palette of greys and whites livened up by the occasional burst of burnt orange. There's a fireplace to gather around on those chillier evenings, while the mirrored doors on the bedroom wardrobe will make it easy to get ready ahead of an evening out. Located four minutes' walk from the York City Walls, many of the main attractions are equally easy to reach. The cathedral is less than ten minutes away on foot, while the castle takes fifteen.

Located right by the magnificent York Minster, this 18th-century townhouse enjoys a quiet yet central location. Families and friends alike will settle right in here and pets are welcome to join you, but thanks to its many stairs, low windows and trip hazards, young children will need supervision at all times. There is space to sit out with a drink or an alfresco meal in the small courtyard garden – this is overlooked by surrounding buildings and may not feel fully private. Self-check-in makes arrival easy and convenient, though the nearest parking spot is a short walk away. We think the best way to explore the area is on foot though, so having a car here isn't a necessity.

Inside, the living room is a bright and welcoming space with its wood floors, vaulted ceilings and wood-burning fire, while the sleek, modern kitchen is ready to host cosy dinners when you’re not out sampling the city’s food scene.
The two bedrooms, meanwhile, have been carefully curated with style and comfort in mind, and you’re sure to get a peaceful night’s sleep thanks to their courtyard facing position. 
While you could spend all day tucked inside your beautiful cottage, go out and explore your surroundings. You’re just a five-minute walk from the York City Walls, an eight-minute stroll from York Minster, while the Shambles – one of Europe’s best-preserved medieval shopping streets – is ten minutes away on foot.

In a city with as rich a heritage as York, it only makes sense to find a place to stay that is equally as historic. Found on the famous Micklegate street — complete with four Grade-I listed buildings and three medieval churches — this apartment sits within a building that dates back to the fifteenth century. Nowhere is this fact more obvious than in the wooden ceiling beams in the living area and the timber frames seen in other rooms. Despite these prominent period features, the bulk of the interior is actually quite modern, with cleansingly white walls, en vogue wooden floorboards and a sleek white kitchen. It's a lovely place to return to after a day of learning about the city's interesting past. Five minutes' walk in one direction will take you to Micklegate Bar and the city walls, while the same amount of time in the opposite direction will see you reach the museum at Fairfax House

You’ll find this contemporary, light-filled home in the village of Fulford, a five-minute drive from the centre of historic York. Inside, the place is open-plan and breezy, with cleverly placed skylights and white-washed walls adding a fresh and sleek feel throughout. The minimalist living area was our favourite spot to relax and the spacious patio is a treat on sunny summer mornings. Make your favourite meals in the bright kitchen or nip into the city to sample the tasty selection of bars, restaurants, tea rooms and cafes. If you fancy stretching your legs, we recommend following the River Ouse into York – it’ll take you around forty minutes if you go at a leisurely pace. Spend an afternoon exploring the web of medieval streets, admiring the soaring Minster’s Gothic architecture and walking the time-worn City Walls. At the end of another eventful day, sup real ale in oak-panelled taverns that have been serving revellers since the Tudor times.

Head out to discover the many fabulous restaurants, bars and boutiques of York, just a twenty-minute walk away. From the ancient walls of Roman York to the grandeur of Georgian York, follow the city's cobbled streets to soak up its impressive history, architecture and monuments. Beyond the centre of York, from here, you'll also be well located to uncover the scenic Yorkshire Dales, North York Moors and Wolds for long country walks among nature.

Adorned with artefacts and old photographs, you’ll get a real sense of its history all while being central to the sights of the town. Wake up and enjoy coffee at the circular marble table alongside a hearty breakfast. When you return back at the end of the day, the living room has a deep grey sofa and a velvet blue chair to settle in as you unwind in front of the TV. There’s a pretty tiled kitchen for self-catered meals to enjoy at home. Afterwards, take a relaxing soak in the clawfoot tub and fall asleep in the navy bedroom, ready to wake up to beautiful views of the nearby gothic tower.

If you're looking for a unique place to stay in the city of York, look no further. This former malthouse has been converted into a fantastic holiday home, with plenty of character that will please even the most discerning of guests. 

The Grade-II listed building dates back to the 19th century, and you can admire the traditional equipment still on show today. However, there is plenty of modern charm here too – you'll love the comfy sofa and bright green kitchen where you can cook up your favourite dishes. After a delicious meal at the stylish dining bench, you can head downstairs to the games room for some fun. Challenge your guests to a round of pool, or simply chill out on the beanbags as you plan your itinerary for the following day. 

Walk across the River Ouse, and you'll arrive in the vibrant heart of York. The Shambles is a twelve-minute stroll away from your front door, where you can browse the quirky boutiques lining the cobbled streets. Make sure you pay a visit to the impressive York Minster too and take a stroll through Museum Gardens, before sipping a pint of local ale at one of the city's quaint pubs.

Affectionally known as Bishy Road to locals, Bishopthorpe Road is home to an award-winning collection of independent shops and is the frequent venue for street parties. It's a great place to stay near if you want to see a more authentic side of York and as luck would have it, this house sits on a side street just off the famous thoroughfare. We can't really find anything to fault with the interior — the long, open living space on the ground floor is bright and welcoming thanks to a big bay window on one side and glass doors on the other. Go through these and you'll be greeted by a courtyard with seating for alfresco feasts in the summer months. For want of a better word, it's all very homely, which is exactly what you want when visiting a new city. If you fancy a jaunt into the historic centre, you can be on the other side of the River Ouse in under ten minutes on foot.
