Families and friends alike will settle right in here and pets are welcome to join you, but thanks to its many stairs, low windows and trip hazards, young children will need supervision at all times. There is space to sit out with a drink or an alfresco meal in the small courtyard garden – this is overlooked by surrounding buildings and may not feel fully private. Self-check-in makes arrival easy and convenient, though the nearest parking spot is a short walk away. We think the best way to explore the area is on foot though, so having a car here isn't a necessity.

This stunning York townhouse with a basement cinema and games room is located immediately off Bishy Road (voted Britain’s Best High street). The house sits right by the ancient walls and it's just an eight-minute walk to the city centre. 

Arriving at the house, you’re greeted with a freshly-baked cake and all the essentials for a cuppa. You can then snuggle up on one of the sofas in front of the wood-burning stove, or if it’s sunny sit out on the bistro seating in the private south-facing courtyard. In the bedroom, it's all about the finer details with an Egyptian cotton towel for each guest, pocket sprung mattresses, and original fireplaces adding a touch of Georgian charm. 

The basement was once a pub cellar and has been transformed into a private, cosy cinema room and small games room with foosball. It is the ideal spot to wind down in the evening along with Netflix and a library of books.

From here, you just need to cross the River Ouse to arrive at York's bustling city centre. From your central location, even the furthest reaches of York city centre are no more than a fifteen-minute walk away, while the majority is just a five-minute stroll. Be sure to marvel at the magnificent York Minster, stride along The Shambles, and while away an afternoon or two in its many art galleries and museums.

This Grade II listed home may be modern by York’s standards (Georgian, in fact) but it’s still got bags of character. The location is tough to beat – on the banks of the Foss River, tucked in amongst the trendy, global restaurants and boutique coffee shops of Walmgate. York’s historic attractions are at your fingertips with the stunning York Minster a seven-minute walk down atmospheric old streets, and the Jorvik Viking Centre a three-minute stroll. Inside, old sash windows let in plenty of natural light and you’ll find a stylish medley of slate grey and duck-egg blue keeping things contemporary. The cosy living room has plenty to entertain you after a day exploring the city (even an X-Box for rainy days) and the open-plan kitchen keeps the place spacious and sociable. Come bedtime, a queen-size bed awaits for a sound sleep.     

On The Foss

Affectionally known as Bishy Road to locals, Bishopthorpe Road is home to an award-winning collection of independent shops and is the frequent venue for street parties. It's a great place to stay near if you want to see a more authentic side of York and as luck would have it, this house sits on a side street just off the famous thoroughfare. We can't really find anything to fault with the interior — the long, open living space on the ground floor is bright and welcoming thanks to a big bay window on one side and glass doors on the other. Go through these and you'll be greeted by a courtyard with seating for alfresco feasts in the summer months. For want of a better word, it's all very homely, which is exactly what you want when visiting a new city. If you fancy a jaunt into the historic centre, you can be on the other side of the River Ouse in under ten minutes on foot.

Perched high on the fifth floor of a contemporary apartment building, the city vistas across the waterways of the River Foss and to the Howardian Hills beyond are second to none.
 
Whip up breakfast in the gadget-ladened kitchen then gather your ensemble at the dining table for a lazy morning feast. Curl up on the plush sofa with a cuppa and a good book – there's Netflix at the ready too, if that's more your style. Or sneak back to bed in the boutique-style bedrooms with freshly brewed coffee and open up the Juliet balcony doors. Wherever you choose to be, those bird's eye views of river life and the city's rooftops will be right there.

Walk across the River Ouse, and you'll arrive in the vibrant heart of York. The Shambles is a twelve-minute stroll away from your front door, where you can browse the quirky boutiques lining the cobbled streets. Make sure you pay a visit to the impressive York Minster too and take a stroll through Museum Gardens, before sipping a pint of local ale at one of the city's quaint pubs.

Although, if you plan to stay within the city, a car simply won't be necessary, as you'll be within walking distance from the city's highlights. Stroll out to the quality bistros and wine bars just steps away on Walmgate come evening time, as here you'll quite literally be just a stone's throw from arriving back home when ready for a restful night's sleep.

Enclosed within the city's medieval walls beside the River Floss and just a five-minute walk from the heart of historic York, locations don't come much better than this. Lose yourself in the labyrinth of streets to discover bustling restaurants, cosy tea rooms, and a myriad of independent boutiques. Be sure to check out Betty's Café Tea Rooms (just eleven minutes on foot over the river) for a fat rascal - it's a thing around these parts. And there's no better way to see the city than to trace along the magnificent circuit of 13th-century walls. When it's time to rest up, you'll find a welcoming retreat awaiting. Housed in an impressive 19th Century warehouse of many former guises – first as one of Europe's largest flour mills, before a stint as chocolate giants, Rowntree and Co's navigation warehouse - the five-storey building has been reimagined into luxury apartments. Inside, the exposed brickwork, industrial windows, and archived imagery dotted about the home tell of its past, while homely touches and a deep sofa to sink into ramp up the cosy factor. And thanks to its privileged setting beside the quiet riverbanks, you can be sure of a peaceful night's sleep here. 

Cinder Toffee

In a city with as rich a heritage as York, it only makes sense to find a place to stay that is equally as historic. Found on the famous Micklegate street — complete with four Grade-I listed buildings and three medieval churches — this apartment sits within a building that dates back to the fifteenth century. Nowhere is this fact more obvious than in the wooden ceiling beams in the living area and the timber frames seen in other rooms. Despite these prominent period features, the bulk of the interior is actually quite modern, with cleansingly white walls, en vogue wooden floorboards and a sleek white kitchen. It's a lovely place to return to after a day of learning about the city's interesting past. Five minutes' walk in one direction will take you to Micklegate Bar and the city walls, while the same amount of time in the opposite direction will see you reach the museum at Fairfax House

A Spoonful of Sugar

Set in the city centre, just a minutes’ walk from The Shambles, this charming apartment resides in a historic building – the birthplace of Joseph Rowntree. Adorned with artefacts and old photographs, you’ll get a real sense of its history all while being central to the sights of the town. Wake up and enjoy coffee at the circular marble table alongside a hearty breakfast. When you return back at the end of the day, the living room has a deep grey sofa and a velvet blue chair to settle in as you unwind in front of the TV. There’s a pretty tiled kitchen for self-catered meals to enjoy at home. Afterwards, take a relaxing soak in the clawfoot tub and fall asleep in the navy bedroom, ready to wake up to beautiful views of the nearby gothic tower.

Not only is the apartment beautiful, but it’s also in a fantastic location. Nestled in a residential area but just a short walk from the city centre, you get the best of both worlds. You’ll love exploring the famous Roman walls, the Georgian architecture, and trying to tick off as many of the thirty museums as possible. If you fancy a break from the city, the Yorkshire Dales are within easy reach for long, windy walks in the countryside. However you spend the day, you’ll be glad to come home to your apartment. Make your favourite meals in the bright kitchen or nip into the city to sample the tasty selection of bars, restaurants, tea rooms and cafes. If you fancy stretching your legs, we recommend following the River Ouse into York – it’ll take you around forty minutes if you go at a leisurely pace. Spend an afternoon exploring the web of medieval streets, admiring the soaring Minster’s Gothic architecture and walking the time-worn City Walls. At the end of another eventful day, sup real ale in oak-panelled taverns that have been serving revellers since the Tudor times.

In a stunning Victorian-built house, this tucked-away spot offers the perfect escape for a couple or pair of travellers keen to explore the sights of York. Whether you’re looking for history, culture, or culinary delights, York has it all. In this wonderfully walkable city, you’ll pass by ancient landmarks, then turn a corner onto a bustling street of shops, restaurants, and pubs. But after you’ve sampled a few local beers and ales, you’ll need a spot to rest your weary head. How does a serene, waterside apartment on the River Foss sound to you? It’s just a nine-minute walk from York Castle, fifteen from York Art Gallery, and a minute away from dining and drinking spots. We love the setting, on the ground floor of a stand-out riverside building – a converted, warehouse-style block with red brickwork and tons of sash windows across its facade. The interiors are just as gorgeous, but lean more towards modern than traditional. In the bright living space, you’ve got your own huge window and fabulous exposed brickwork at one end, then a stylish, understated kitchen at the other. In between, there’s a certain Scandi feel from the furniture, but you’re brought back to York with the colourful canvas of the historic cityscape above the plush sofa. Get the kettle on (before you get too comfy).

Hoppy Ale

Quietly removed from York’s centre in a residential neighbourhood north of the city, this home will suit those looking to escape the crowds. While the pared-back, neutral interiors aren’t anything to write home about, the double-height ceilings, exposed beams, and sweet twin bedroom on the mezzanine bring plenty of character. And outside, the suntrap terrace garden is a nice touch for evening drinks. If time is on your side, take the riverside walk into York’s centre along the River Ouse (a lazy forty-five-minute stroll). Or hop on the bus (located two minutes from your door) or the bike tracks, and you’ll be there in no time.

When hunger strikes, the kitchenette is well-equipped for knocking up your favourite dishes – though if you’d prefer to hang up your chef’s hat, you’re no more than a ten-minute walk from a clamour of restaurants. Start your York adventure at the famous cathedral, just four minutes from your doorstep. From here, take the seven-minute saunter to the Shambles where crooked and characterful alleyways lay claim to a number of quirky independent shops and cafes. There’s plenty of room for everyone to dine together or unwind in the lounge, so you won’t feel crowded. Each room has an en-suite bathroom, so this is an ideal choice for a large group – you don’t want to be queuing for the shower when you could be meandering along the Shambles, just fifteen minutes away. 

The House of York

A stay in York deserves a home that radiates history from its seams. This 16th-century apartment fits right in with the narrow, medieval streets around it and has an enviable view of York Minster. If that’s not a testament to how central you are, buzzing tearooms, trendy restaurants and cosy pubs are all on your doorstep. The building itself is a typical black and white, timber-clad home and inside you’ll find a potted history of the rooms from their design. Wood-panelled walls whisper of the 19th-century, while the gnarled old timber beams of the 16th-century show through too. The living room is a regal space, like the drawing rooms of times gone by, and has big sash windows, high ceilings and an upright piano for an evening sing-along. The kitchen has everything you need to make every meal of the day (perhaps using some of the fabulous produce from the artisan deli downstairs), and the dining area has a delightful antler and top-hat feature on the wall. Bedrooms are also a trip through history, tucked up in the eaves beneath darkwood beams. The master bedroom downstairs features a hand-made king-size bed for the perfect night's sleep. An extra bonus is the little outdoor seating area where you can catch a breath of fresh air and hear the bells of the Minster toll in the background. 

Saint Peter

A recently converted landmark building within two minutes' walk of York Minster, the period exterior of this place doesn't give away the sleek, modern apartment inside. Offering all the comforts of home, you'll feel like a local in no time. With everything so new it's practically sparkling, you'll have a sociable, open-plan living space with a comfy sofa and a smart dining table, along with a high-spec contemporary kitchen area with all the kit you'll need to cook at home. Both bedrooms are stylish and each has a dedicated bathroom so there won't be any need to queue for the shower in the morning. Little luxuries include welcome treats, underfloor heating in the bathrooms and a funky remote control backlight behind the TV – to set the mood for the evening. The location couldn't be better either, with a walk of fewer than ten minutes into the city centre.

The open-plan main room is a welcoming space with its plump sofa and bookshelf and the TV offers everything you need in way of entertainment – from an Xbox to Netflix – for when you’re not out exploring the city’s sights. With a pretty kitchen and a charming bedroom boasting a large, cosy bed, you'll feel right at home in no time. Outside of your apartment, you’ve got plenty to see and do within easy walking distance, including The Shambles with their ​​overhanging timber-framed buildings (four minutes away), York Minster (ten minutes), the York City Walls (nine minutes) and the Merchant Adventurers' Hall, just a one-minute stroll from your door. 


Fair Foss

If you're looking to stay in the heart of this beautiful city, you could choose this unique private space right next to the Foss Bridge. A landmark building that's recently been through an extensive renovation, it's a Grade II listed former schoolhouse with all the character you could wish for. And thanks to its clever layout and contemporary styling, this little apartment for two is a pretty striking place. Walking in, you'll spot the double-height ceilings and sash windows, but also a new bedroom mezzanine with a glass wall, a spiral staircase and metal struts adding an industrial touch. Furnished with maximum comfort in mind, you'll have a comfy corner sofa to lounge on and a secondary seating area with bold yellow armchairs. There's a fully-functioning kitchen area for any cooking you'd like to do at home and a smart shower room for freshening up before a night on the town. But that's not all. Tucked away under the mezzanine there's a stunning freestanding bathtub – big enough for two. Just steps away from all the cafes, bars and restaurants you could need, it doesn't get much better than this.

There's a timeless quality to this home, just a short walk from the city centre. Part of a period terrace, it's as pretty as a picture – both inside and out. You're spoilt for choice here, with two sitting rooms to choose between. Both super comfortable and classically furnished, there's the front room with its arched window and cosy sofas, and the former dining room with its armchairs and log burning stove. Giving the option of letting the youngsters have their own living space, it's a handy arrangement made possible by the kitchen extension. In this modern space, you'll have an excellent, fully kitted-out kitchen (hello range cooker!) and a dining area that opens out to the charming little courtyard. In the summer evenings, it's the perfect spot for dinner and drinks outside. With two good size bedrooms and a luxurious bathroom with a freestanding bathtub, we didn't think this warm, welcoming home could get any better. But it can – you're welcome to bring along your pet too.

You'll find this cosy home only a fifteen-minute walk from the majestic York Minster. It's tucked away on a quiet street lined with pretty cottages, with the restaurants, pubs and shops in the city centre just a short stroll away. Open the front door and step into the charming living room. We love the repurposed fireplace – now a decorative statement piece – and the sheer amount of light spilling through the windows. Kick-off your shoes and snuggle up on the squishy sofa, watching your favourite films – the host provides complimentary Netflix and Amazon Prime accounts, so you'll have plenty of options. Come dinnertime, pad into the country-style kitchen and rustle up a meal – it's stocked with cookware and cutlery to make cooking a breeze. On sunny days, take your fare into the lovely courtyard and dine alfresco. Although it's small, we think the wisteria-covered walls and pretty flowerboxes turn it into a tranquil, whimsical space to unwind with a glass of wine as the day slowly draws to a close.
