If you’re looking for a rural escape, this delightful cottage in Carlincraig is sure to fit the bill. Although just over 30 miles from Aberdeen, also known as The Silver City due to its granite buildings, this home feels a world away from any sort of metropolis. Upon arrival, rolling hills and fields stretch for miles around this stony bolthole in the countryside. But the experience isn’t exactly rustic. Your host welcomes you with a luxury hamper, packed with nibbles and a bottle of champagne. Set in an estate of 15,000 acres, surrounded by forest and moorland on the banks of the River Dye, you'll find this ancient, stone-built cottage. For centuries it was an inn, and troops rested here before going to battle in the Jacobite Rebellion nearly 300 years ago. 

After a long walk around the grounds, have a soak in the wood-fired Swedish hot tub, then grill some local, fresh produce on the Big Green Egg barbecue (loved by Michelin chefs). There's a shared sauna (fired by wood too) and an outdoor cold shower for afterwards – you'll find it set within the trees, beside the vegetable garden. Pick some veggies (or your lovely hosts can pick to order for you) to take back to the cottage. You can get fresh eggs from the shop here too. 

Back at your home, put some vinyl on the record player and chill out or take in the fabulous views. There's a mixture of antique and modern furniture, gorgeous fabrics and quirky items – your hosts have lavished lots of attention to detail on this place. There's an artist's studio located outside too. It's no wonder this home was featured in the top twenty-five UK cottages in The Times.

There are plenty of walks to enjoy right from your doorstep, or further afield, history lovers can head to Dunnottar Castle, just over a thirty-minute drive away. It's around the same distance to Stonehaven, a small and picturesque fishing harbour, while Balmoral Castle, open to the public at certain times of the year, is just over a forty-minute ride.

And your eyes aren't deceiving you; there really is a bright pink second bedroom. It's the addition of a log burner and the odd vintage milking stool that really ground this place in its stunning surroundings.

The site has quite a few surprises in store too. There's a beautifully dressed bring-your-own-bottle pub for socialising with the other guests, a veggie garden and clutch of hens, plus a luxurious wood-fired sauna to relax your aching muscles after a day hiking. And there's an excellent shop on the site, so although you may be a fifteen-minute drive from Banchory and thirty-five from the coast at Stonehaven, you're unlikely to run out of the essentials with plenty of local produce on hand.

Glen Dye is an outdoors paradise, a nature lover's dream come true, as the large estate sits amidst 15,000 acres of woodland and rugged countryside. There are miles and miles of tracks on your doorstep for walking, cycling and running. These run through one of Britain's finest private forests or across miles and miles of moorland wilderness.

On-site, you'll also be in blissful serenity as the house comes with its own wood-fired hot tub in the garden. Pick some seasonal vegetables from the garden in preparation for a delicious homemade feast. With a big Green Egg barbecue all to yourselves – we bet you can smell the delightful smokey aromas already. There are a number of other facilities available for free use, too, including the custom-built wood-fired sauna and the BYOB (bring your own booze) pub conveniently located right next door. In addition, you'll find a shop on the premises which sells a collection of staples, including fresh local meats and fish, homemade ready meals and fresh eggs produced by the free-range chickens that belong to the owners.

Those bringing the dogs will appreciate the fenced-in garden and kids can hang out in the garage outside with its ping pong table.

Apart from the odd bleat of a sheep or moo of a coo, there’s not much else to disturb the peace at this spot in the Perthshire countryside. Fields stretch before you (check out the view from the balcony), yet it’s just three miles to the charming market town of Dunkeld to stock up on supplies and try the local cafes. It’s also a walker and mountain biker’s paradise around these parts – this home has heated bike storage and a boot room. The wood-burner in the living room can warm up frozen toes and the sleek kitchen is equipped with everything you need to fuel up, post-walk. Your host is in the neighbouring farmhouse should you need anything.

Flagstone floors and the old stone partition wall have been retained as though from the 18th-century, but the kitchen is all sleek units and high-spec appliances. A wood-burner still crackles at the heart of the home, keeping things cosy in the colder months. Upstairs, a plump king-size bed awaits and the traditional old window looks out onto the narrow wynd below. As for location, you’re mere footsteps from Pittenweem’s High Street (about 30, we’ve counted), where you’ll find cafés, craft shops, galleries and a fabulous fish and chip shop. It’s a two-minute walk to the East Neuk's only working harbourfront where you can watch the fishing boats land their catch of lobsters and langoustines, and St Andrews is a twenty-minute drive away.

You’re in the Cairngorms National Park here, so you may want to lace up those walking boots and bag some munros, or head to Speyside and sample some of the world-famous whisky distilleries. 

A Highland Romance

If you want to try and spot the ever-elusive Loch Ness Monster, this old stone clergy house that has sat on the banks of the famed body of water for over a century-and-a-half lets you do so in the utmost comfort. Inside, the rooms are filled with varnished wood furnishings, boldly printed rugs and roaring fireplaces — so you can look out the windows at the loch without feeling cold in the slightest. Other noble flourishes come in the shape of the four-poster beds and the two deep claw-footed bathtubs. There's even a small garden out the back, but you're hardly short of beautiful outdoor attractions around these parts. Urquhart Castle is a fifteen-minute drive away, while Dores Beach can be reached in twenty minutes in case you're in the mood for a bracing wild swim. Although the address feels both rural and secluded, the town centre of Inverness only takes seventeen minutes to reach in the car, too.

From the outside, this Victorian home looks as quaint as quaint can be, but inside, guests will find an apartment that mixes vintage and modern aspects with considerable dexterity. In the living room, a large bay window floods the space with natural daylight, which dances nicely off the wooden floors and walls painted in muted grey. The Persian rug and deep blue sofa add some bold splashes of colour. Elsewhere, we're big fans of the gleaming copper bathtub in the master bathroom that promises to be as comfortable as it is handsome. Off the same room, there's access to a cute terrace with alfresco seating — yes, it's Scotland, but put on a jumper and enjoy the dramatic sunsets that this corner of the country enjoys. The home's only an eight-minute walk from the River Ness and Inverness's town centre, which includes a castle and an art gallery. Alternatively, if you're feeling more active, Cairngorms National Park takes around half an hour to reach in the car.
