During the day, head down to the crystal-clear waters of the River Esk and over the suspension bridge for brisk walks in the estate's grounds. A Grade-II listed former stable in the middle of Dunskey Estate, this home is a truly glorious spot. The interior has been restored, but there are lots of features that date back to a century ago, including the wood panelling and fireplace. Elsewhere, there are furnishings in rich colours, antiques dotted about the rooms and a hand-painted mural in the bedroom, which all work together for a boutique feel. Outside, we are smitten with the charming cobbled courtyard with seating, potted plants and access to a private walled garden. Beyond the home's boundaries lies a wealth of natural attractions on the estate to discover, from two lochs and a pair of waterfalls to three beaches and plenty of walking routes along a stretch of craggy coastline. There's even a maze on the grounds if you have an afternoon going spare. The village of Portpatrick can be reached in twenty minutes on foot, as well.

This cottage sits on a 2000-acre estate where walking trails through the woodlands bring you to waterfalls, lochs and the craggy coastline of Dumfries and Galloway. A forty-minute stroll down a forest track brings you to a deserted beach, and the coastal town of Portpatrick is a twenty-minute walk away. A welcome pack of local produce – eggs, butter, bread, home baking, artisanal cheese and the estate’s handmade toiletries – awaits you on arrival. Perhaps head out to the sunny dining spot on the lawn for your first meal. Here you’ll find a fire pit to keep the evening chill at bay. The home itself is beautifully decorated. The living room is like a wild meadow with its magenta and violet mural of wild birds and flowers and pot plants seem to fill every nook. Yet there’s a grand feeling to the tufted velvet sofas, and the writer’s desk in the corner is an Edwardian antique from Dunskey Castle itself. Once the wood-burner is crackling away it’s super cosy too. Come bedtime, bedrooms are a fairytale fantasy with plush beds fit for a princess. Especially the twin room, with silk drapes flowing over the beds. With deer, pheasants and wild birds filling forest walks, you can feel like you’ve stepped right into a Disney movie.

The woods immediately beside the lawns close to Corsewall House and just a few minutes’ walk from the cottage are a dedicated children’s fun zone. The private garden provides a lush playground for children (and adults) complete with an 18-metre zip wire, a climbing frame, a slide as well as three swings. It is the perfect spot for parents to relax with a spread of local foods and perhaps a drop or two to drink while the kids play – picnic anyone? And if that wasn't enough, the kids can also bounce their hearts out on the 14-foot trampoline by the edge of the lawns. There's even a campfire area in the woods for toasting marshmallows. Beyond the site, the local area also offers plenty to keep the whole crowd busy, from sprawling coastlines and colourful fishing towns to aristocratic homes – your most difficult decision will be choosing where to visit first.

Perfect for a family retreat, a car is necessary here due to the secluded location – but once here, you can don your hiking boots and stroll the Southern Uplands. It's a historic area with plenty to write home about, as William Wordsworth can attest – he was born here, and many of the area's beautiful landscapes inspired his poetry. This snug heritage home is just a five-minute drive from the town centre, making it the perfect spot to switch off and unwind in the Cumbrian countryside. Inside, there's oodles of charm and character – a brick fireplace with a crackling wood-burner in the living room, reclaimed tiles in the kitchen and antique furniture everywhere you look. Two lounges ensure you'll have tons of space to snuggle up and get cosy, whether you want to play a board game, listen to a record or curl up with a good book. The kitchen and conservatory-style dining room promise lazy breakfasts and delightful family dinners, while the shabby-chic bedrooms upstairs are artsy and comfortable. But the real gem is the garden. Spend your afternoons lounging in the sun, sipping wine, dining alfresco and soaking up the far-reaching views. Down a wooded path, you'll find a private riverbank ideal for fishing. A fascinating fusion unfurls inside an Edwardian Castle in form of the Royal Apartment. There's an unusual architectural interplays within this unique Castle apartment, hidden down a private drive in deep Scottish countryside. At first glance, the Apartment is grandly presented inside a 19th-century castle, but a closer inspection reveals contemporary features dovetailed into the original design, cleverly expanding the space and light, to create a luxury self-catering homestay that's bespoke down to the last detail.

There's a lot to discover within the grounds of the estate, from waterfalls and lochs to beaches and walled gardens. Perhaps best of all, it's possible to get meals cooked by the castle's 3AA-Rosette head chef delivered to your front door, as well as personalised bouquets from the in-house florist.

While the idea of staying in a castle sounds rather splendid, they do tend to be rather large places and if you're only a small group, it's easy to get overwhelmed. The solution, then, is to simply stay in the best section, as is the case with this penthouse apartment inside Dunksey Castle. Built at the turn of the twentieth century for industry magnate and Member of Parliament Charles Lindsay Orr Ewing, there are some original features to be found inside, such as a cast-iron bathtub now filled with plants, baronial fireplaces and salvaged mirrors. However, the rest of the living quarters are thoroughly modern. with plant-themed artwork, velvet furnishings and plush rugs. The master bedroom is particularly spectacular with the bay windows, four-poster bed and bathtub in the corner. It's possible to see the sea and the village of Portpatrick from here, and it only takes twenty minutes on foot to reach these. Elsewhere on the estate, there are lochs, waterfalls and even a maze to explore.

We love the frolicking fauna and novel palettes that give off an air of elegance from the moment you step over the threshold. Oversized prints consume original walls, while velvet cuddle chairs, antler chandeliers and Suzani-inspired medallions combine for an eclectic aesthetic. Come evening, head out into the paved garden, light up the firepit for a grilled dinner, and sip bubbles while breathing in the unspoiled, rural air. Outside of your home, Portpatrick's harbour and golf course are a short five-minute walk, while the Dunskey Castle is a twenty-minute stroll up the coast. That's if you'd ever want to venture out beyond this stately sanctuary of pastoral pleasures.

The home is part of the 18th-century Corsewall Estate surrounded by twenty acres of woodland and gardens – all for you to enjoy. From snowdrops, daffodils and bluebells in the winter and spring to a riot of colourful rhododendrons and azaleas in summer, you’ll be instantly struck by the vibrancy of your locale with countless walking and cycling routes around them to explore. Inside your home, a picturesque living room is arranged around a wood-burning fireplace, ideal for curling up with a glass of wine and some board games. The sunny kitchen, meanwhile, is all set to get mornings off to a hearty start over breakfast or afternoons snacks courtesy of the homemade brownies, milk, bread, jam, butter, tea and coffee provided. We love the country bedrooms with their floral touches and large windows proffering views across the gardens and towards the Loch, while the en-suite tubs invite long, luxurious baths after a day in the great outdoors. With a private garden equipped with a barbecue and croquet set, you can spend lazy afternoons having fun in the sun, or head to the nearby woods where a campfire beckons ghost stories over toasted marshmallows under a blanket of stars – your host even provides a tent and roll mats should you wish to snooze amidst the trees (all you need is your sleeping bag).  Factor in the estate’s dedicated play areas that offer a zip-wire, a climbing frame, swings, and a trampoline and there’s more than enough fun for the whole family. Boat Bank Beach is also a short walk down the estate’s drive and Lady Bay – a shell collector’s dream – is a ten-minute drive away. Place yourself in this picturesque slice of paradise on the edges of the Lake District National Park. As you arrive down the mile-long private drive, you’ll be welcomed with panoramic views of Skiddaw, Grassmoor, and the Lorton and Buttermere Valleys. Recently renovated, every part of this home has been designed with the far-reaching vistas in mind. Floor to ceiling windows make the conservatory a perfect setting to enjoy these, especially when you stream music through the Sonos speakers. The calming neutrals found in the adjoining living/dining room let the views do the talking, while the large fireplace creates a cosy atmosphere in the evening. Partition the kitchen off from here with sliding glass doors, ideal if you are hosting a party around the elegant dining table. Notice the wooden furniture within the home, all of which has been made by local craftsmen using wood from the surrounding area. Should you be hosting a family gathering, the kids will love retreating to the informal television room complete with 7ft pool table, board games, piano, and even Sky TV. That’s if you can drag them away from the play area in the orchard. The six acres of landscaped gardens, designed by the renowned Thomas Mawson, are a delight to explore. Uncover two glorious summerhouses, a gas-fired barbecue, and a lovely outdoor dining area. There’s a garden kitchen readily available with fresh ingredients for those alfresco suppers, along with croquet and boules for after dinner games. The boot room comes in great use when there’s so many scenic hikes on your doorstep. Even though you’re peacefully secluded, the nearest town is only two miles down the road, giving this home the best of both worlds.

Each season brings a new vista to the sprawling, 2000-acre estate this home is set on. Spring brings carpets of bluebells to the forest walks, winter sees snowdrops poking their heads through the undergrowth and in the summer, rhododendrons burst onto the scene in magenta and crimson. Back in the day, this grand stone cottage was set aside for the estate’s gardener and the decor leans into the horticultural theme with a stunning mural of ferns, forest and foxes in the living room. Floral patterned rugs sit on the hardwood floor, and faux fur blankets on tufted leather sofas keep the living room feeling cosy on cold nights. Get a fire crackling in the grate when the temperature drops. The kitchen is designed for farmhouse-style cooking with a big range cooker in the centre. It’s the decor that really grabs your attention though, with a handful of plates and vintage posters adorning the duck-egg-blue walls. Outside you’ll find a huge private garden where outdoor dining is on the cards at the barbecue and fire pit lawn. Views from here stretch across the hills and fields, where curious cows graze nearby. Exploring the estate you’ll find walking trails leading to waterfalls and lochs, and there’s a hedge maze right on your doorstep. The surrounding forest is filled with wildlife and you might spot deer, foxes and pheasants on daily walks.

The perfect base for exploring the stunning Lake District National Park and the Solway Coast, there are trails close by for walks with your four-legged companions in tow. And when thoughts turn to food, West Curthwaite’s traditional village inn is within walking distance. A home for all seasons, there’s a wood-burning fire to cosy up beside in winter months and a suntrap terrace for alfresco dining on long summer evenings. It’s worth noting that the last two guests will have to make do with a sofa bed in the family room here – great for teens seeking a little more independence, but it won’t suit everyone.

Tucked away in the grounds of a 2,000-acre coastal estate, this quaint cottage and its enchanting surrounding are plucked from the pages of a storybook. Inside, the home oozes elegance with plush fabrics and romantic cherry blossom hues. When we stayed, we were smitten with the Japanese rice-paper screen, mother-of-pearl headboard and the underfloor heating that kept our toes toasty after long yomps through the grounds. While the kitchen is fully stocked with accoutrements for rustling up your favourite dinners, call upon your host’s head chef to deliver a Michelin-quality meal straight to your table. After a cup of tea in the sunshine on your quiet patio, pull on your walking shoes and explore. You’ll find secret waterfalls, lochs and a maze right on your doorstep. Jump in the car and take the eight-minute drive to Killantringan Lighthouse or if you’re feeling brave, plunge into the brisk Irish Sea at Knock Bay Beach. Return back to your bolthole in the late afternoon to catch the last of the sunshine; set up the lanterns in your courtyard, pour a glass of prosecco and sink into the outdoor bathtub beneath the blooming camellia tree. Bliss.

If you’re looking for a show-stopper home for your next get-together, this manor house in the heart of Dumfries and Galloway could be the one. With a games room, library, and formal dining room, there’s plenty of space to socialise. And when you want to relax, head to the private sauna or book a massage in the treatment room. As well as a guest kitchen, there’s a commercial kitchen here – a private chef can be arranged if you fancy a night off dinner duty, or even want your entire stay catered. Outside, the grounds are just as impressive with four acres of formal gardens, a secret courtyard, and an alfresco dining terrace to enjoy.

A magical tower, rising some 48ft above the Dumfries and Galloway countryside, this unique home is just as incredible inside as it looks. Its 9ft thick stone walls have stood the test of time since 1450 – although you may notice a few musket ball holes in the exterior. Packed with history and centuries of stories – many of which the estate manager will tell you on arrival – this home is an absolute gem by the banks of the River Annan. Exploring the castle for the first time is a wonderful experience, with a wealth of turrets, nooks and staircases to discover. The showstopper here is the Great Hall, with a high, arching ceiling and a Renaissance fireplace so huge you walk inside it. Like the rest of the castle, it's dressed with antique furniture and eclectic art collected over many years by the owners. Two long sofas make for a fabulous space to relax with family and friends and, in the evening, you can light the fire and play music from the gallery above. Elsewhere there's a fine library, a basement playroom and a large kitchen with its own casual dining space and a fireplace. Formal dinners can be held in the dining room – and perhaps if you don't feel like cooking, you could ask the host to arrange a private chef. On the top floors, bedrooms are romantic and impressive. We particularly love the huge antique four-poster in one room and the bed built into a cosy alcove in another. Outside there are four acres to explore, including a lake, a medieval-style topiary garden and a terrace for sipping drinks together on a summer evening. Perfect for a large group celebrating something special, this is an enchanting and memorable place to stay, just a short drive from the town of Lockerbie. And did we mention there's a famous ghost story here? Old ‘Dunty’ Porteous hasn't bothered visitors for decades but it makes for a fun tale – be sure to ask the staff about him.

The design is a little dated – particularly the bathrooms – but that's no bother, as the setting is second to none. You'll have access to 36 acres of shared gardens and parklands at your disposal, not to mention views of the picturesque Scottish Hills on your doorstep. The Lake District is about 25 miles away if you plan to venture further afield.
