With this Buckstone cottage, you get the best of both worlds. Edinburgh city centre and all its landmarks are only a twenty-minute drive away, but you'll have excellent walks, the Seven Hills viewpoint, and leafy parks practically on your doorstep. Better still, a private front garden here will surely be a hit when the sun is out. It's the perfect spot to wind down in the evenings, though the light-filled living area is also a fine place to relax. The bedrooms are a little snug, but we think it does the job for a laid-back stay on the outskirts of the city.

Perfectly placed in Edinburgh’s New Town, this no-fuss apartment has the city’s best bits within easy reach. Poring over the works in the Scottish National Portrait Gallery, just a ten-minute walk from your doorstep is an excellent way to start a morning. And when it’s time for elevenses, there’s a selection of trendy coffee houses on the other side of Queen Street Gardens. Shop along the famous Princes Street or take the twenty-minute amble up to the mighty Edinburgh Castle for a tour of the Great Hall and St Margaret’s Chapel. At the end of your jam-packed day, retreat to your homespun apartment for a relaxing evening with your loved ones. Get snug in the cosy living space as the appointed chef of your group whips up something tasty in the well-equipped kitchen. The living room lends itself perfectly to lazy evenings at home, while the dedicated desks make this a great option for remote workers. Private parking is available for one car and you’ll find a great selection of cafes and restaurants within easy walking distance.

Steeped in traditional charm and gleaming with grandeur, this charming apartment could easily play holiday home to the Royal Family – and thanks to its prestigious Ramsay Garden location, you're perfectly positioned to enjoy Edinburgh's innumerable sights and sounds on foot. From the famous Royal Mile to the fortress of Edinburgh Castle, one thing's for absolutely certain – you'll never be short of things to see and do.

The home itself is a splendourful hub flush with all things luxurious. Beautiful antique furnishings add character, meanwhile the peppering of gold–framed artworks sprinkle an extra dusting of splendour. The colour scheme is a medley or warm reds and rich browns and in the master bathroom, traditional black and white floor tiles instantly draw the eye. We particularly love the living area with its brown leather chaise sofa and Persian rug. Complete with an ancient fireplace at its heart, there's also a circular alcove and desk to one side, and a flatscreen television. Quite frankly, we couldn't think of a more elegant spot to watch a movie!

This home will leave you feeling like lord of the manor, but as tempting as it may be to stay within the walls of your royal headquarters, with so much to explore – and all within easy reach – be sure to peel yourself away from your plush pad and traverse.

Indulge in a stylish stay on George Street, one of Edinburgh's most well-known streets and home to famous bars and restaurants including The Dome, The Ivy, Dishoom and the Cafe Royal. Bay windows have views of the castle, the Firth of Forth and, of course, the timeless Georgian architecture right outside your door. Cook up neeps and tatties (turnips and potatoes, for the uninitiated) in the large kitchen corner, which comes with everything you need, hidden behind sleek, white cupboard doors. Serve up at the table in the sunny bay window with a view straight to the castle. After a tough hike up Arthur's Seat, freshen up using the Bulgari toiletries in the bathroom and sink into your sumptuous tufted bed. Just note it's about 90 steps to reach this apartment, so we suggest packing light.

Monochrome style meets Edinburgh's history in this city centre apartment, nestled on one of the city's most famous streets; George Street. The flat pays tribute to city icons such as Sean Connery and Calton Hill with a coherent collection of black-and-white prints lining the living area's walls. Original feature fireplaces in the bedroom, a chandelier in the living room, and cornicing like icing on a cake hark back to the days when horse and carriage would clatter along the wide boulevard below. George Street has its own rich history, originally built as "the principal street" of the New Town. The neighbouring townhouses are architectural marvels. High-end boutiques and upscale restaurants have given these buildings a new purpose in the 21st century. With this apartment, the city's truly on your doorstep. Get out and explore.

This elegant apartment in Leith is all about thoughtful details. From the welcome pack full of helpful local information to the cereal and snacks provided, and even the child-friendly amenities available for families travelling with little ones, this home ticks a lot of boxes when it comes to hospitality. The patio garden with its outdoor seating and private hot tub – complete with water features and hydrotherapy jets – is a definite highlight. And inside, board games and streaming services mean there’s plenty to keep everyone entertained. Venture outside, however, and you’ll find plenty more to keep you occupied with the waterside Shore area just minutes from your door, and the city’s most iconic sights like Calton Hill and Edinburgh Castle easily reachable by public transport or car.

This is a genuinely special home, with an abundance of character and sophistication, with everything finished to a high quality. The location was equally impressive, found on a quiet cobbled street just off a main busy road, within walking distance of the city centre. While the striking master bedroom came close, the living room was our favourite room in the home. It feels almost like an old school drawing room, but with an added comfort factor. There's also great attention to detail, such as the drawer of hot water bottles in the kitchen for those rainy Scottish evenings.

In a lovely part of Stockbridge with plenty of shops and cafes just a short walk away, this townhouse feels like an excellent family home. The living room benefits from a big bay window and high ceilings, but is made to feel innately snug thanks to tartan chairs and faux-fur throws. The kitchen is remarkable in an entirely different way, with loads of space and a pretty professional set-up meaning it will appeal to any budding chef. Elsewhere, we like the stained glass windows in the bathroom inspired perhaps inspired by Charles Rennie Mackintosh — let's not go into his Glaswegian connection here — as well as the pleasantly landscaped garden with seating should the sunshine break through the clouds during your stay. If it doesn't, that's no bother because there's plenty to do nearby — the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art is just over a quarter of an hour walk away, while the equally close by streets of Dean Village are a treat to wander about.

In Edinburgh, history oozes out of every corner – and this Victorian home has a unique heritage of its own. A former 1800s Victorian ironmonger, this shop used to service the trading ships sailing back and forth from Leith Port to Iceland. Now, it's a cosy and contemporary hideaway in one of the most buzzing parts of the city.

Swapping Victorian allure for sleek mid-century style, the open-plan living space is a relaxed place to chill out and decompress after exploring the hustle and bustle of Old Town. Host Lynda has an incredible eye for design, and there are plenty of spots to snuggle up and get comfortable. Rustle up a meal in the kitchen, followed by a Netflix movie night on the plush blue sofa. When it's time for some shut-eye, drift off to sleep in one of the comfortable and chic bedrooms – both feature the large, original shop windows that flood the space with sunlight.

Although Leith is just outside the much-frequented neighbourhoods in the city centre, don't let that fool you – you'll find great bars and some of Edinburgh's best restaurants right on your doorstep. Here, old shipping warehouses now play host to photo studios, art galleries and delectable eateries, while the waterfront road along the port – aptly called The Shore – is dotted with cafes, pubs and shops. And with buses running directly into the centre taking about fifteen minutes, you'll have easy access to the tourist hotspots, too. 

The Ironmonger's Store

Grab your own cosy nook right on the Royal Mile – Edinburgh's main artery, ending at the castle. Moments away, you'll find whisky bars serving over 200 different drams, fully kilted pipers, and – in August, anyway – the magical chaos of the Edinburgh Festival. This apartment offers brief respite from all that, kitted out with a flat-screen TV for binge-watching, a generous kitchen corner for preparing tipsy laird pudding and a squishy red leather sofa to eat it on. Downstairs is the famous World's End pub – grab a pint and people-watch for a while.
