We particularly love the living area with its brown leather chaise sofa and Persian rug. With this Buckstone cottage, you get the best of both worlds. Edinburgh city centre and all its landmarks are only a twenty-minute drive away, but you'll have excellent walks, the Seven Hills viewpoint, and leafy parks practically on your doorstep. Better still, a private front garden here will surely be a hit when the sun is out. It's the perfect spot to wind down in the evenings, though the light-filled living area is also a fine place to relax. The bedrooms are a little snug, but we think it does the job for a laid-back stay on the outskirts of the city.

Sitting within one of Edinburgh's many Georgian buildings, this loft apartment doesn't have the period features you might expect from the handsome exterior, but it's still easy on the eye nevertheless. Ideally, it could do with another bathroom, but that's nitpicking really. One thing we especially like is that the neighbourhood is a little more residential than the touristy centre, but you're still within walking distance of many of the city's attractions – the castle and old town are both around half an hour's walk, for instance.

We’d also be remiss not to mention the wonderful view of the castle, which can be reached in ten minutes on foot. Venture outside, however, and you’ll find plenty more to keep you occupied with the waterside Shore area just minutes from your door, and the city’s most iconic sights like Calton Hill and Edinburgh Castle easily reachable by public transport or car.

Towards the east end of Edinburgh’s city centre, the architecture style starts to move away from the gothic spires of the Old Town. This home certainly isn’t far from historic landmarks, about half a mile from iconic views on Calton Hill as well as theatrical scenes at the Edinburgh Playhouse, but its character is distinctly more modern.

Set in a quiet lane that's surprisingly close to the bustling restaurants and bars of London Road and Elm Row, this three-storey townhouse appears more like a cottage from the outside. Honey-coloured stonework and a cobbled street out front make this quaint, mews-like street feel more traditional than what you’ll find inside. 

Its layout is really quite special. At the heart of the home on the first floor, which you’ll ascend via wooden spiral staircase, we love the Scandinavian minimalist look. Huge skylights and high ceilings stretch all the way up to the mezzanine bedroom, with sloped walls and glass-panelled banisters creating a truly unique shape to the space. In the heart of Trinity, just a fifteen-minute walk from Edinburgh's Royal Botanic Gardens, this modern pad waits to welcome you home. Once part of the original Trinity Masonic Lodge, the apartment seamlessly blends contemporary style with the charm of the 1880s architecture. You’ll find everything needed for a comfortable stay here, set in a peaceful area away from the hustle and bustle of the city. That said, you can reach Edinburgh's city centre easily enough either via car, public transport, or on foot if you’re feeling fit enough, making it an ideal base for friends and families alike. 

Masonic Magic

This home's vast living room merges period grandeur with a contemporary neutral palette as the high, elegantly corniced ceilings meet with the modern, muted grey walls. On the raised ground floor of a typical Georgian building, it's the perfect blend of the city's historic architecture and clean-cut contemporary styling. Along with the spacious living room, complete with a dining table for four, there's a separate kitchen with everything you could need for cooking at home, and a relaxing bedroom to retreat to at the end of a day exploring. Found in the West End of the city, near to Haymarket station, the flat offers easy transport links and is only ten minutes walk away from Princes Street. Stroll to Edinburgh Castle in less than half an hour or explore the area's excellent independent boutiques, coffee shops, restaurants, and bars.

The Hydeaway

Just over a twenty-minute walk from the heart and soul of the Old Town – Edinburgh Castle – the New Town has quite a different vibe. You’ll find Georgian architecture nearly everywhere you turn, and historic tenement buildings lining the streets as you head towards Canonmills. While these stone structures might look similar from the outside, we can guarantee you'll find eclectic homes within. This flat is no exception. The owner is a local artist, whose creative interior design choices are evident throughout. You’ll find her charming, abstract artwork on display in various rooms, as well as brightly-coloured walls, quirky tablecloth prints, antique furniture, and unique lamps on ornate cabinets. Our favourite spot has to be the lounge – this yellow room is full of character and old-world charm. Light up the fire and gather everyone round for a board game on a rainy day in this sumptuous space. Or at dusk, it could equally serve as a plush pad for an impromptu whisky-tasting session. While you sip on single malts, have the host arrange for a private chef to come over and handle dinner. You are on holiday after all.

An Seòmar Buidhe

Located above bustling George Street, you'll find boutique shops, charming cafes and gorgeous Victorian architecture right on your doorstep. This area is a popular spot with locals, students and tourists alike, as there are plenty of excellent restaurants and trendy bars to while away the evenings in. Edinburgh Castle, a twelfth-century fortress, is only a ten-minute walk away and offers some beautiful views over the city, while historic Old Town is reachable in fifteen minutes. Back at home, this apartment marries modern living with timeless elegance. Your Old Town neighbourhood is full of narrow alleys where museums, shops and restaurants all vie for your attention, while Calton Hill (a ten-minute walk away) offers impressive views over the entire city. With the Royal Mile a seven-minute stroll away and Edinburgh Castle reachable in thirteen minutes on foot, you couldn’t be better placed to experience the best that the city has to offer.

At the foot of the Royal Mile, just one minute from the national seat of power of the Scottish Parliament, this flat is every bit as majestic as its surroundings. Enjoy luxury right from the offset, as your host can arrange for a private transfer from the airport right to your door. Inside, while the decor is much more modern than the historic locale, the furnishings are supremely comfortable and stylish. Your open-plan living space has rich, brown wooden flooring and duck-egg blue kitchen cabinets – a beautiful colour scheme which is perfectly illuminated by bright windows and light fixtures. We love the idea of dining below the trendy, low-hanging lampshade next to the charcoal feature wall. And this isn’t your only dining option – how about an alfresco meal on your own balcony? Then round off the evening with a stroll around the residents' garden. In the morning, savour a hearty bowl of porridge to prepare for a big day ahead. As you’re just a six-minute walk from the edge of Holyrood Park, you’ve got an enormous green space to explore. You can even scale its extinct volcano, Arthur’s Seat, for sweeping views of Edinburgh and beyond.

In a lovely part of Stockbridge with plenty of shops and cafes just a short walk away, this townhouse feels like an excellent family home. The living room benefits from a big bay window and high ceilings, but is made to feel innately snug thanks to tartan chairs and faux-fur throws. The kitchen is remarkable in an entirely different way, with loads of space and a pretty professional set-up meaning it will appeal to any budding chef. Elsewhere, we like the stained glass windows in the bathroom inspired perhaps inspired by Charles Rennie Mackintosh — let's not go into his Glaswegian connection here — as well as the pleasantly landscaped garden with seating should the sunshine break through the clouds during your stay. If it doesn't, that's no bother because there's plenty to do nearby — the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art is just over a quarter of an hour walk away, while the equally close by streets of Dean Village are a treat to wander about.
