Flagstone floors and the old stone partition wall have been retained as though from the 18th-century, but the kitchen is all sleek units and high-spec appliances. A wood-burner still crackles at the heart of the home, keeping things cosy in the colder months. Upstairs, a plump king-size bed awaits and the traditional old window looks out onto the narrow wynd below. As for location, you’re mere footsteps from Pittenweem’s High Street (about 30, we’ve counted), where you’ll find cafés, craft shops, galleries and a fabulous fish and chip shop. This rather serious-looking stone building in the centre of Berwick-upon-Tweed was built back in the middle of the nineteenth century and used to be a school. Today, however, it has been completely renovated to the point where you would have no idea that these were once classrooms. In the main living-come-dining area, big windows look out into the garden and the estuary in the distance, as well as bathing the space in natural light. A bio-ethanol fireplace sits at one side of the room and provides a more eco-friendly way of warming up cold hands. When the weather's more agreeable, the home has some private outdoor space, as well as access to a shared courtyard that backs onto the old town walls. The town's pier and lighthouse can be reached in less than fifteen minutes' walk, as can the beach. You can also cross over the Scottish Border in around ten minutes by car, too.

There’s an enchanting mix of the old and new here, with vintage furniture and original artwork blending in with modern amenities and every luxury you might need. You can spend your days exploring the area and your evenings curled up by the fire with a dram from the honesty bar. When the weather is fine, you’ll want to soak up the sunshine in the suntrap terrace, dining on charcuterie lovingly prepared by your host. Overlooking North Inch Park and the River Tay, this classic apartment sits in a handsome, Georgian building. High ceilings, detailed cornicing and big sash windows all combine to create the feeling of stepping back into the 19th century inside. This majestic mansion, with its ten glamorous bedrooms, offers a completely private retreat just outside of Edinburgh. The home has been in the hands of the Kinloch family for thirteen generations, and the bedrooms' unique names reflect the house's long, aristocratic history. The facade was designed in the classical style by the architect Robert Adam in 1750, and modernised to its current form in the 1820s. Make like Lucy from the Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe and explore every corner, while the rest of the family snuggles up in the drawing-room with the log fire burning. The hardest decision you’ll have to make is whether to serve your evening feasts in the oak-lined music room, or the formal dining room. On top of that, there are one hundred acres of garden and woodland to romp around and explore. The house is located in the heart of East Lothian, just outside Athelstaneford and, as the birthplace of the Saltire, Scotland's national flag, the village is entrenched in Scottish history. It's also situated on the famous Golf Coast, close to some of the country's best courses, and you can drive to the city of Edinburgh in just over half an hour.

The country-style kitchen has everything you need to cook yourself, and there’s a restaurant at Carfraemill Hotel, a three-minute drive or twenty-minute walk away. The idyllic village of Lauder is an eight-minute drive away where you’ll find local galleries, coffee shops and a village deli, or make the forty-minute drive to Edinburgh for a day in the city.

While you have the option to head to the city for the day, you can also stay put, enjoying moorland views and hill walks — Berwick-upon-Tweed and its coastline is only half an hour's drive away, too. The recently refurbished interior is a lovely place to return to after time spent out in the elements, with comfy furnishings positioned around the log burner sure to have you feeling warm and toasty again. Slightly further afield, explore Northumberland's stunning coastline and breathtaking waterside walks. Visit the Holy Island of Lindisfarne, twenty miles away, or Bamburgh Castle, another six miles down the coast. Alternatively, visit Berwick-upon-Tweed, England's most northerly town is a fifteen-minute drive away.
