New York loft-style meets traditional fishing cottage at this bijou home in Pittenweem. Stepping inside, you can see this place was designed by an award-winning architect. Flagstone floors and the old stone partition wall have been retained as though from the 18th-century, but the kitchen is all sleek units and high-spec appliances. A wood-burner still crackles at the heart of the home, keeping things cosy in the colder months. Upstairs, a plump king-size bed awaits and the traditional old window looks out onto the narrow wynd below. As for location, you’re mere footsteps from Pittenweem’s High Street (about 30, we’ve counted), where you’ll find cafés, craft shops, galleries and a fabulous fish and chip shop. Six minutes on foot from Cupar station, this unique building has historic tales to tell. Dating from 1815, this was the town council’s Burgh Chambers, where important decisions and important people were commonplace inside its walls. Surrounded by trees and green slopes, this place is bright and modern, but still oozing with the potential for optimal comfort. Light the wood-burning stove, claim your spot on the plush sofa and let it envelop you as you let go of all the tension you’ve been holding onto. The egg chair is the perfect spot for bookworms, but you’d better be quick on calling dibs because we can guarantee everyone would be eager to have a go. Even though this home is the epitome of relaxation inside, you’re going to want to brave the nippy Scottish air to go outside – it’ll be worth it, trust us. Head out with a bottle of prosecco and slip into the hot tub – just when you think you couldn’t be more relaxed. 

If you have to leave, stay connected to nature by visiting the Lochore Meadows, or stroll through the Townhill Wood where you’ll encounter century-old trees. Cleish Castle is an eleven-minute drive away, with Locleven Castle being just a couple of minutes more. Head to the local golf course, eight-minutes from here, to play a round or two, or take to the loch for waterboarding. In between, pop in at Genaro’s Fish Bar or The Village Inn for a bite to eat.

The lounge is bright and beautiful, with an atmospheric open fire adding to the cosy atmosphere. The kitchen is equipped with everything you could need to whip up family feasts, while the quaint bedrooms have beautiful antique furniture and lovely artwork, and the twin room boasts an en-suite bathroom with a shower. Explore the surrounding area, and you'll discover several nearby pubs and an excellent restaurant within a few miles of the lodge. Why not forego the need for a designated driver and walk there for a hearty pub lunch before rambling home and kicking off your boots in the utility room, and settling in by the fire. Slightly further afield, explore Northumberland's stunning coastline and breathtaking waterside walks. Visit the Holy Island of Lindisfarne, twenty miles away, or Bamburgh Castle, another six miles down the coast. Alternatively, visit Berwick-upon-Tweed, England's most northerly town is a fifteen-minute drive away.

Apart from the odd bleat of a sheep or moo of a coo, there’s not much else to disturb the peace at this spot in the Perthshire countryside. Castaway and escape the outside world at this picture-perfect period cottage squirrelled away on the Holy Island of Lindisfarne, just a few miles off the Northumberland coast. Cut off twice daily from the mainland with the fast-moving tides of the North Sea, the island has a truly magical feel. Spend your days spotting seals sunning themselves on the coastline or bobbing through the waters. Stretch your legs with bracing walks along the vast unspoilt sandy shores – Coves Haven beach on the northern side of Holy Island is gloriously secluded. And soak up the historical splendour of the circa. 1550 Lindisfarne Castle rising from the rock face.
