Upstairs, two cosy bedrooms still show off a little of the building's original structure with wooden beams. Large windows invite a lovely natural light to brighten this home beautifully. A cabin in the woods reimagined, this home belongs in the centrefold of a magazine. Traditional wooden panelling adds a rustic feel to this home, but it's nicely contrasted with a stylish monochrome palette and huge floor-to-ceiling windows that overlook a colourful sensory garden and pond. It's easy to spend an afternoon sitting on the south-facing deck, enjoying the peace of the Welsh countryside and keeping an eye out for the swallows, swifts, ducks and frogs living their lives on the water — even an otter has been spotted in the grounds by previous guests. If you’re looking for a peaceful escape to the Brecon Beacons with a few luxuries thrown in, this is the cottage for you. If you’re seriously into your hiking, then the trails right from the cottage’s front door into the peaks of the Brecon Beacons (including Pen Y Fan) won’t disappoint. For the more sedate option, follow the flat canal path into the charming town of Brecon for cafés and shops. On returning, treat yourself to a complimentary massage at The Treatment Studio in the estate. The cottage itself radiates history from its old stone walls and low, timber-beamed ceilings. A little library of books and wood-burner in the living room adds to that away-from-it-all feeling. In the kitchen and living room, the flagstone floor is heated underfoot so there’s no sacrificing comfort for aesthetics here. Just outside the picturesque village of Llanfrynach, on the grounds of a grade II*-listed Georgian mansion, this one-bedroom cottage is all about rest and relaxation. This former coach house has been converted into a stunning contemporary space. Downstairs, the sitting room boasts sky-high ceilings and ten-foot-tall French doors leading out onto a private patio. The wood burner and deerskin rugs on the floor add a cosy feeling that's perfect for the colder months, while during the summer, you can throw open those doors and let the outside in. The cottage actually has two patio areas – one facing east and the other west – so you can always catch the sun no matter the time of day. This barn conversion in deepest Herefordshire is bursting with rural authenticity. Not only is the property located close to a peaceful nature reserve complete with lakes, but it's also been Grade-II listed to protect its historical importance. However, despite this impressive pedigree, the home's interior is pretty contemporary, with a sleek kitchen, four-poster bedrooms and tiled bathrooms sitting quite comfortably underneath the original wooden ceiling beams. Out the front, there's a private garden with seating and views of hills and forests, but there's also an additional courtyard to the back that's shared with neighbours. If gazing out at the countryside vista inspires you to explore this beautiful county, you're well-placed for bird-spotting and long rambles, perhaps finished with a meal at The Stagg Inn, a well-praised gastropub that sits no more than two minute's walk from your front door.

Just outside the home’s gate, you will find access straight to the estuary which leads to Newport Bay and Parrog – reachable in just twenty-three minutes on foot, which makes it ideal for a leisurely walk together. Then return home in the late afternoon for Welsh cake warmed in the Aga. 

In the evenings, cosy up on the big squashy sofa in front of the wood burner with your dog curled up at your feet as you watch your family's favourite film. Or, on warmer days head out to the patio with a gin and tonic and let the children tire themselves out for bedtime as they run around the lawns.

A lot of things have changed since this cottage was built in the nineteenth century, but we're willing to bet that the surrounding view of the Upper Towy Valley and Cambrian Mountains is just as mesmerising as it was all those years ago.

Inside, a couple of period features also remain, like the mighty stone fireplace that acts as a natural focal point in the living space. However, there have been enough contemporary additions to ensure that the address well and truly belongs in the twenty-first century. You only have to look at the modern kitchen, the bedrooms painted in a soothing white and the subway-tiled shower to see what we mean.

Out through the front door, there's a small patio with seating so you can admire the gorgeous scenery and watch the neighbouring sheep – which sometimes come to graze right up to the home's windows. Come nighttime, stargazing is made all the more beautiful by the fact that the property sits in a designated Dark Sky area, free of light pollution. 

This part of South Wales is an excellent location for walkers and cyclists, as the Brecon Beacons National Park can be reached in around twenty minutes' drive, going through the town of Llandovery in the process.

It was used as a cart house when first built, but has since been totally revamped by award-winning Rio Architects. The result is a splendid home that combines contemporary minimalism with some traditional touches – the hosts have even added some Welsh-themed artworks for you to admire. And, if you head outside, you'll find a patio area where you can sip drinks in the sunshine – look out for the magic stone tree built on one of the walls.

The popular Plas Farm Trail passes right by the cottage's front door, and a short road leads you down to the banks of the River Clydach then into a private bluebell wood. A twenty-minute car ride will bring you to the Brecon Beacons, where you can try your hand at a range of outdoor activities including rock climbing and kayaking. And, if you fancy a day at the seaside, you can drive to the Gower Peninsula in forty minutes to discover hidden beaches.

It's been impeccably put together by its owner Kari, a professional designer, with nods to traditional country chic, contemporary cool and even Antipodean modern rustic – Kari grew up in Australia. The main house having been extended, the old stable unit was transformed into an architect-designed annexe with a series of split-level suites that wouldn't look out of place in a boutique hotel in Shoreditch.

The huge, 40ft kitchen is equipped with everything you'll need to cook for your group, with an incredible four ovens, five hobs and two dishwashers, or you can take the hard work out of it by hiring a private chef. You'll have four main living spaces with enough room to get together as a large group or enjoy a bit of privacy, and there are all sorts of outdoor seating spots – including a fire pit area, dining terrace and an Aussie-style shack enjoying views across the valley.

Built for entertaining, you'll have a games barn where you can play table tennis, work out on the gym equipment and grab some garden games, as well as a room perfect for group activities. There's even a wood-fired hot tub, a children's natural play area and private fields for you to explore.

Just a few miles from the book town of Hay-on-Wye, it's easy to explore the Welsh border from here, and hiking, cycling and canoeing are all popular local attractions. When Mary Ann Evans paid a visit to this home in 1857, she was inspired to write a novel. On the border between England and Wales, this little eco hut sits in the splendidly named hamlet of Burlingjobb. There’s nothing but the cheep and pip of birdsong and the occasional bleat of a lamb here. The curve of the cabin’s roof reflects Hanter Hill opposite, and each cabinet and window frame has been crafted from local cedar and douglas fir. The living room and kitchen has everything you need to unwind in an evening, including a hand-made kitchen and sofa tucked under the gorgeous floating staircase. Heating comes courtesy of infra-red panels, a nod to the environment and, as the cabin is kept cosy, you can select a book from the little library and take things back to analogue. Glass doors lead out to a deck with a fire pit and barbecue. The real highlight is the master bedroom, dappled with botanica and with a picture-frame window looking out over the garden. It’s here you’ll find the longest claw-footed tub we think we’ve ever seen – perfect for a soak after a day hiking up to Hanter Hill or the tumbling cascade of Water Break-Its-Neck waterfall.

As you look around this home, it becomes clear very quickly that it has been designed to make the most of the beautiful coastal scenery in which this part of south Wales really specialises. In the living room, huge bi-fold doors open up to Juliet balconies that gaze out over Tenby's South Beach, while in the bedrooms there are further balconies, only this time with a view of Caldy Island. With such glorious panoramas, you could be forgiven for not really paying the interior much attention, but when you do get around to it, you'll find a modern space that's simple but effective — we're fans of the minimalist white kitchen, in particular. As you can probably imagine when looking out the window, the beach isn't too far away — just five minutes' walk, in fact. Tenby Castle can be reached in under a quarter of an hour on foot, too.
