At this lovely stone farm cottage, adopting the slow pace of nature and taking it easy is widely encouraged as you unwind in its fairy tale atmosphere and quirky interior. Located within a courtyard of a working farm, it’s an animal lover’s dream – not to mention the well-known farm shop on your doorstep so you can pack the country-style kitchen with fresh, local produce. When you aren’t snuggled up on the sofa or catching a quick cat nap in your rustic bedroom, you can sip your morning coffee on the private patio, taking in the blooming garden, while saying hello to a cow or two. We can vouch for the panoramic views over the rolling green hills and country fields too. Although two people can enjoy the comfortable bed, we would happily stay here alone for a calming solo trip. Guests are welcome to wander around the extensive garden, which even includes a picturesque bridge over the lilly pond (don’t worry, we’ve checked for trolls). And if you can drag yourself away from the peace and quiet of your pretty barn conversion home, you can spend days exploring the beach at Colwyn Bay, or the promenade of Llandudno, and even the mountains of Snowdonia National Park. This delightful townhouse is on the beachfront of quiet Rhos-on-Sea. For a coastal getaway and the chance to experience the charm of a small town, look no further. 

The house is just across the road from the beach, so each morning you’ll wake up to the sound of the sea gently rushing to shore. Floor-to-ceiling windows in the living room showcase the home’s prime beachfront location – if you’re anything like us, you’ll lose track of how long you spend gazing at the peaceful view. There’s a small garden at the front of the house, where you might enjoy a cuppa while watching the fishing boats in the distance, as well as a sunny patio at the back of the house, ideal for takeaway dinners of fish and chips after long days spent on the beach. 

When you’ve had your fill of sailing, swimming and sea fishing from the beach, there’s still plenty to explore nearby. You might like to bring your bikes and set off along the coastal track. Conwy and its gorgeous castle are just twelve minutes away by car, which makes for a lovely afternoon out. Pop into a cafe for lunch before visiting the castle and taking in the history. Snowdonia National Park is also within easy reach, so any hikers in your group will be happy – a thirty-two-minute drive will see you setting off on walks that guarantee gorgeous scenery.

Once the former shooting residence of the Earl of Marlborough, this charming Grade II listed cottage in the heart of Snowdonia carefully stitches together history and contemporary design. Original slate floors and a huge inglenook fireplace contrast against modern additions such as the sleek roll-top bath and luxurious hot tub. The kitchen is the heart of the home, where your clan will spend time eating, drinking and playing card games if it tips it down outside. Light the wood-burning stove to keep the chill at bay or warm up with a brisk walk to the town of Blaenau Ffestiniog – you’ll get there in under an hour if you go at a decent pace. Spend sunny afternoons in the beer garden of the Pengwern pub, just a minute’s walk up the road, or jump in the car and take the ten-minute drive to the trout-filled Llyn Trawsfynydd. Hire a fishing rod or stroll around the water’s edge, stopping for a well-deserved cup of tea in the café along the way.

One of the funkiest former grain stores we ever did see, this little home is part of a farm in the countryside just outside Pwllheli. Lovingly converted with a great deal of flair and imagination, it's far from your usual holiday home. Upcycled furniture, industrial pieces and pops of colour mix with natural wood, leather and slate. The ground floor living space is cosy and quirky, with a log burner, beamed ceilings and an open staircase. Cook up family meals in the fully kitted-out kitchen and choose to eat indoors or out in the private garden. There's so much to love about this place, but we particularly like the wet room, with its rain shower, light tunnel and penguins hiding in the built-in shelves, and the pretty garden with its fun seating areas. With the owners just next door, make use of the gym, make friends with the farm animals and cook on the fire pit in the evenings. It's just a ten-minute drive into the town, with loads more to see and do nearby, from walking and horse riding to playing on the sandy beaches.

This home was once a hayloft in a former life — the original circular window on the front is so shaped for pitching hay through — but today it's a perfectly cosy space for a rural getaway. Despite this functional heritage, you can safely banish any thoughts of cramped living quarters. Illuminated by a series of skylights, guests get access to a recently refitted kitchen that is plenty big enough for cooking up hearty dinners, as well as a lounge with comfy furnishings for sprawling out upon after long country walks. There is no shortage of outdoor pursuits to undertake in North Shropshire and just across the Welsh border, including wandering along the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, only twenty-four minutes away in the car. The Boat House gastropub on the outskirts of Ellesmere is only six minutes' walk away, too.
