The farmhouse is as traditional as they come, with wood beams and a roaring fireplace. In the mornings, cook hearty breakfasts on the AGA while enjoying the outstanding views of the valley from the kitchen window. From almost every angle here, the views captivate. 

Perhaps you’ll lace up your boots and head out on a nature walk. There’s an acre of woodland on the 40-acre farm, as well as a stretch of river for you to paddle in. There’s direct access to the Brecon Beacons National Park from the back of the farmhouse, so you won’t run out of hiking or cycling routes. 

When you return after a day exploring the Great Outdoors, you’ll be glad of the mountain spring water hot tub. Fire it up and soak your aching muscles, then spend the rest of the evening playing board games in front of the fire. 

The nearest pub is a fifteen-minute drive, and the cafes and bookshops of Hay-on-Wye are twenty-three minutes away. It may feel like you’re in the middle of nowhere, but you can grab a pint or a slice of cake easily enough. Perfection.

This barn conversion in deepest Herefordshire is bursting with rural authenticity. The wood burner and deerskin rugs on the floor add a cosy feeling that's perfect for the colder months, while during the summer, you can throw open those doors and let the outside in. The cottage actually has two patio areas – one facing east and the other west – so you can always catch the sun no matter the time of day. The main house having been extended, the old stable unit was transformed into an architect-designed annexe with a series of split-level suites that wouldn't look out of place in a boutique hotel in Shoreditch.

The huge, 40ft kitchen is equipped with everything you'll need to cook for your group, with an incredible four ovens, five hobs and two dishwashers, or you can take the hard work out of it by hiring a private chef. You'll have four main living spaces with enough room to get together as a large group or enjoy a bit of privacy, and there are all sorts of outdoor seating spots – including a fire pit area, dining terrace and an Aussie-style shack enjoying views across the valley.

Built for entertaining, you'll have a games barn where you can play table tennis, work out on the gym equipment and grab some garden games, as well as a room perfect for group activities. There's even a wood-fired hot tub, a children's natural play area and private fields for you to explore.

Inside, the mill conversion boasts a wood-burning stove and a games room that’s ideal for older children. Little ones will need to be supervised on the spiral staircase.

In a rural stretch of land where the rivers Vyrnwy and Banwy cross paths, find an idyllic countryside escape just a four-minute drive from the village of Meifod. This working farmhouse is perfect for families looking for a unique experience in an authentic, rustic abode. In the rolling fields, where you can hear cattle pottering around their large pens, step inside to this cosy home. Your spacious lounge has original timber beams and a brick fireplace with a wood-burning stove at its centre, naturally. While you take a moment to relax on the plush leather sofa with a cup of tea, let the kids explore the farm and find the games room (complete with foosball, pool, and darts), the garden and barbecue, and of course your animal neighbours. The kunekune pigs will be more than happy to make new friends, plus you can educate the whole family thanks to the farmer’s kind offering of daily viewings to learn how cows are milked. With Snowdonia National Park reachable in fifteen minutes' drive and the rugged coastline of Cardigan Bay taking about half an hour, this home presents itself as the ideal base from which to explore the varied attractions of Mid Wales. After a hard day of hiking or swimming in the sea, return to the oak-beamed living room and warm yourself in front of the inviting inglenook fireplace — complete with its original bread oven — before retiring to one of the three bedrooms, complete with extra blankets for those cooler nights.

Once a working dairy, this stone cottage at the foot of the Brecon Beacons encompasses the country idyll. The enclosed garden offers outdoor dining and a place for dogs to run around safely, and you’re on a 12-acre estate with no livestock so there are plenty of walkies for furry friends. Exposed timber beams in the bedroom and (heated) flagstone floor speak of the building’s history, and splashes of crimson and green are reminiscent of the Welsh flag. In the living room, you’ll find everything you need to keep the wood-burning going in the evening and the granite-topped kitchen provides all the appliances and crockery required for self-catering. Though if you want to dine out, there’s a village pub a five-minute walk away. In terms of location, hikers and walkers will delight in trails up to the Brecon Beacon peaks, right from the doorstep. And those that like a more sedate ramble can follow the canal path nearby. After a day on your feet, guests of this cottage enjoy access to The Treatment Room where a complimentary massage can work out those aches and pains.

Tucked away down a quiet country lane lies this comfortable and cosy barn conversion, just outside Dolgellau. Wake up each morning to dramatic mountain views through the bedroom’s Velux window, and on sunny days, enjoy a leisurely breakfast alfresco in the south-facing garden which offers uninterrupted panoramas of the impressive Cadair Idris mountain range. 

This home is a great base to explore southern Snowdonia with plenty of walks and cycle trails not far away from your door. Plus, Abermaw beach at Barmouth is just nine miles away where you can bathe in the sun, wander the village or even have a go at paddleboarding. 

In the evening, we would love to fire up the barbecue for an alfresco meal, accompanied by vistas of woodland and mountains. Then get cosy for a night snuggled up on the sofa, warming your feet on the underfloor heating.

On the border between England and Wales, this little eco hut sits in the splendidly named hamlet of Burlingjobb. There’s nothing but the cheep and pip of birdsong and the occasional bleat of a lamb here. The curve of the cabin’s roof reflects Hanter Hill opposite, and each cabinet and window frame has been crafted from local cedar and douglas fir. The living room and kitchen has everything you need to unwind in an evening, including a hand-made kitchen and sofa tucked under the gorgeous floating staircase. Heating comes courtesy of infra-red panels, a nod to the environment and, as the cabin is kept cosy, you can select a book from the little library and take things back to analogue. Glass doors lead out to a deck with a fire pit and barbecue. The real highlight is the master bedroom, dappled with botanica and with a picture-frame window looking out over the garden. It’s here you’ll find the longest claw-footed tub we think we’ve ever seen – perfect for a soak after a day hiking up to Hanter Hill or the tumbling cascade of Water Break-Its-Neck waterfall.

Surrounded by peaceful countryside, this barn conversion is cosy, comfortable and a pleasure to return to after long hikes through the Snowdonia National Park. Overlooking patchwork rolling hills, the private patio is an ideal spot for morning coffees and evening glasses of wine. Inside, colourful soft furnishings liven up the neutral colour scheme – we particularly loved the pops of orange in the living space. 

Try your hand at recreating classic Welsh dishes in the fully-equipped kitchen or jump in the car and take the short drive to Machynlleth for a bite to eat in one of the fantastic restaurants. Admire the exhibitions in the Museum of Modern Art before taking the twenty-five-minute car ride to Aberdyfi, a pretty seaside village where the River Dyfi meets the clear waters of Cardigan Bay.

When it comes to peace and quiet, we think this spot is pretty impossible to beat. In the summer months, sit out in the sprawling, enclosed garden with a cool drink, or enjoy dining al fresco at the picnic table. On chillier nights, you can snuggle up around the fireplace with a good book or challenge family members to a board game under the wooden beamed ceilings. Fancy a stroll through the countryside? There are plenty of walks leading right from your doorstep. If you need some supplies then the market town of Dolgellau is just a mile away – visit the boutiques, cafés and traditional inns on foot. For a blast of sea air, Abermaw Beach in Barmouth, less than a twenty-five-minute drive from home, has golden sands which are perfect for basking or swimming. And let’s not forget the thrill seekers – the popular peak of Cader Idris is under a half-hour drive away, as well as the largest mountain bike trail centre in the UK – Coed y Brenin. You can't do better than this dreamy townhouse for a cosy escape to a beautiful part of Wales. It’s a historic home that’s been lovingly renovated to retain all its charm and character and to include all those home comforts you long for on holiday. 

Right in the heart of Dolgellau, this home makes for an excellent base for exploring the nearby mountains, villages, forest and coastline. If you want to get out and see the Great Outdoors, this is a marvellous choice indeed. You can walk nine miles from your front door along an old railway line to reach Barmouth and its pretty beach, where you’ll tuck into fish and chips and breathe in the sea air. The walking route to Cader Idris in Southern Snowdonia is just fifteen minutes away, ideal for experienced hikers. Mountain bikers can head to Coes-y-Brenin Forest Park to let off steam. For a gentler excursion, you might stroll to the local shops, to a cafe for lunch, or to a pub for a post-hike pint. 

After a day spent outdoors, you couldn’t ask for a more warm or welcoming home to return to. Rest your weary feet in front of the log burner in the inglenook fireplace, or curl up in the reading nook with a book and a cuppa. The lounge boasts vaulted ceilings and tall windows and is a lovely place to gather together. Play board games or get competitive playing table football. The main bedroom leads onto a decked balcony, and there’s also a pretty garden – you’re spoilt for choice when it comes to choosing where to drink your morning coffee.

There are plenty of trails leading straight from the front door up onto the high peaks of the Brecon Beacons. Alternatively, enjoy more leisurely strolls along the canal. Despite the easy access to the pristine landscapes, you'll find plenty of pubs and restaurants, as well as a supermarket, within a ten-minute drive. Finally, there's an on-site treatment room where you can indulge in various therapy treatments ranging from manicures to deep tissue massages after a hard day hiking in the hills.

It might be a traditional cottage, but the kitchen is sleek, contemporary, and big enough for everyone to pitch in to help prepare meals. While there's something comforting and familial about preparing meals together and then eating around the kitchen table, we imagine you'll also love the outdoor dining table. 

The garden is surrounded by luscious, beautiful greenery, where you can spend lazy mornings tucking into a continental breakfast out in the fresh air, enjoying the comforting sounds of the chirping birds and the babbles of the stream. When you're energised after a hearty breakfast, the historic market town of Machynlleth is just a twelve-minute drive away. There are endless walking trails around here, or simply explore the town's art galleries, quaint shops, cafes, pubs, museums, and more. And if you want to take a walk along the coast, you're within easy reach of North Wales' blustering beaches.

Providing easy access to the Brecon Beacons National Park, this a great spot for nature lovers, hikers and cyclists. It’s worth noting there is one neighbouring lodge located within the same field, but it feels wonderfully secluded. Plus, there’s a sweet terrace and a private hot tub – making it easy to relax and admire the views across the Honddu Valley. Inside, the open-plan living space is simple but you’ll find all the basics needed for a cosy and comfortable stay.

Enjoy a glass of wine on the terrace or gather around the log burner set into the exposed stone fireplace if the weather is chilly. We love the striking kitchen with its vaulted ceiling. There's another log burner here to keep you toasty while you rustle up some Welsh rarebit. 

After lunch, why not take a stroll around the surrounding countryside or head to Builth Wells, a small town offering a variety of shops, pubs, restaurants and cafes a short distance away? There's an array of outdoor activities close by to pursue, including golf, fishing and horse-riding. Or go for a hike on the highest peak in South Wales – Pen y Fan, in the Brecon Beacons National Park, is a twenty-five-minute drive from this lovely home.

The town of Dolgellau is among the most picturesque in Eryri and much of that is down to the abundance of stone homes dotted across the map, including this cottage.

It may look rustic at first glance but step behind the front door and you'll find a pretty contemporary address – save for the traditional stone fireplace in the living room, which we're glad has been retained. Otherwise, the design is fresh and bright, with plenty of perks – the small games room will keep youngsters entertained for a couple of hours at least, while grown-ups can perhaps make the most of this tranquillity with a soak in the pink bathroom's tub.

However, if the weather's on your side, you can choose instead to head outside and luxuriate in the Jacuzzi on the terrace. You can also dine out here, complete with a view of Cader Idris to keep you company. This mountain peak is one of many in the surrounding National Park that are easily reachable for long rambles, but it also only takes twenty minutes to reach the Barmouth seaside if you're ever in the mood for a beach day.

Queen of the Stone Age

Gloriously remote and offering jaw-dropping views toward Bala Lake, this lodge retreat on the eastern gateway to Snowdonia National Park is just what the doctor ordered. 

Sunny mornings call for lazy breakfasts on the deck to drink up the views of the Berwyn mountain. Then break up the morning with a soak in the bubbly hot tub, just because you can. And imagine this spot at dusk as the sun sets over Bala – that’s a memory right there.

On wintery days, hunker down inside where an Aga cooker keeps things toasty in the open-plan living space – those views of the mountains and lake will be right there with you. Or sneak away to the snug for a quiet read or cheeky afternoon loll. 

When it’s time to get out and about, join the friendly locals for a swift pint in the traditional inns of Bala (an easy twenty-minute walk away). For something more adventurous, give watersports a try on Bala Lake, the largest natural lake in Wales (a fifteen-minute walk). Just watch out for Teggie – Wales’ answer to the Loch Ness Monster. Or stay on dry land and give the lakeside steam train a whirl instead. 

Fancy spreading your wings a little further? The golden shores of Barmouth are an afternoon well spent (a forty-eight minute drive). And no visit to these mighty Welsh lands would be complete without a walk in the Snowdonia National park – it’s just a ten-minute drive from your door.

If you’re able to pull yourself away from the wood-fired hot tub and barbecue in your backyard, the Glyndwr’s Way footpath runs right alongside the home, which meanders through over 200 spectacular kilometres of farmland, woodland and forests. With a variety of entertainment options on the property – from table tennis to a TV lounge – there’s plenty to do as a group indoors, too.

The Juliette balcony and terrace both offer up views of the surrounding area, creating a pleasant backdrop as you tuck into breakfast – a perfect way to start a day of traversing the various walking trails nearby if you ask us. And while the building is shared with the owners, the private entrance ensures privacy here. Four miles away, you'll find necessities, fine dining and more in the picturesque village of Pembridge – also known as the 'black and white village' owing to its timbered buildings.
