There's so much to love about this home. The decor is classic and elegant, while still being homely and inviting. We particularly love the grand dining room. We can just picture the family dinners along the banquet-style table, adding an extra touch of magic to this gorgeous place. While the rest of the home is traditional, the kitchen is wonderfully modern and equipped with everything you could need. Even the most reluctant of chefs will be tempted by its pearly white surfaces and huge kitchen island. Even if you're not the one cooking, you'll love spending time in this social space – chatting, playing board games, and listening to music. 

This home also benefits from a delightful garden, with steps leading down to your own football pitch. Enjoy catching up on the outdoor sofas and sipping on wine while the kids entertain themselves for hours on the pitch or explore the vast gardens. When you want to get out and explore yourself, you're just a short drive from Gower and its cliffs, woodlands, walking trails, sparkling beaches, and more. It was actually named the UK's first Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in 1956 – there's much to behold in this beautiful place.

It’s in Mumbles, a seaside suburb with a Victorian pier, a long sweep of sandy beach and a medieval castle. We’re not exaggerating when we say the beach is mere footsteps away, just across the road. From here, you can follow the traffic-free walking path along the coast to Swansea, or to the wild headland in the other direction.

Returning to this cottage after a brisk seaside walk is a delight, especially with the electric fireplace glowing in the living room. You can watch the waves from the comfy sofa, thanks to the big sash window in the living room. There’s a dining table in here too, or you can opt for the more casual breakfast table in the full kitchen. Upstairs, the sea view continues in plush bedrooms and the loft landing is home to a bean-bag-strewn hang-out den. The piece de resistance is the private walled garden out the back with a cute wrought-iron dining set for an evening tipple in the sun. 

The Mumble of the Waves

Offering uninterrupted views over Limeslade Bay, this beautiful apartment is an ideal base for those looking to enjoy the delights of the Gower Peninsula and its many natural wonders. 

While there’s a climb to reach the home on the third floor, it’s more than worth the effort when met with the striking vistas stretching just outside your picture windows. Make yourself comfortable on the plump sofa with a book and mug of tea – pausing now and then to take in the majesty of your locale – before gathering for a celebratory meal at the window-side table while the sun sets over the water below. At night, the king-size bed beckons a seamless night’s sleep, sure to leave you rested and ready for another day of sightseeing. 

Speaking of exploring, take a stroll around the building’s terraced garden, then saunter along the coastal path to Rotherslade (about twenty minutes) where there’s a charming beachside cafe. Our recommendation? Grab a cone from Forte’s Ice Cream Parlour and stroll to Bracelet Bay (nine minutes) before continuing on to Mumbles Pier (twelve minutes) and Mumbles Beach (twenty minutes).

Get way off the beaten track at this gorgeous former smugglers' cottage on the stunning Gower Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). In fact, it's so off-grid that you'll be required to leave your car in a secure spot and decamp into your host's Land Rover for the final mile, setting off down a rutted path and fording a stream before pulling up outside – setting the tone for an adventurous stay in the Welsh Wilderness.

First appearing in local records around 1700, the original part of this cottage is thought to be considerably older. After all, it wouldn't have served as a store for illicit contraband if its existence was known to everyone. Over time, it's been restored to create a rustic retreat that's equipped with all the mod cons required for a comfortable stay, including underfloor heating, a rolltop bath and an inglenook fireplace.

Another standout feature of this home is the charming cottage garden to the rear. Relax and breathe in the sea air as you sit out and sip a cup of tea out on the wildflower-dotted lawn before helping yourself to some fresh eggs, courtesy of the obliging hens.

A stay here is for those seeking those sought-after modern luxuries of peace and tranquillity – an all-too-rare chance to disconnect from the frenetic pace of life and enjoy setting fires to cook the catch of the day on the beach and moonlit swims in the sea. But, however long you decide to stay, we bet you'll wish it was longer.

With Mumbles' beautiful beach just 50 metres from your door and its characterful coffee shops and galleries even closer, the setting of this charming fisherman’s cottage is hard to beat. After a little more bustle? The centre of Swansea is just a short drive away. Although with a cosy fire waiting back at this dog-friendly cottage, you might decide to stay put. If we're being picky, there’s only one bathroom and not much of a garden to speak of here other than a small backyard. But with the beach so close, we don’t think you’ll mind.

The Mumbles

Stumbling upon this 350-year-old cottage feels like discovering a hidden gem. Sitting on the beach in Bishopston and surrounded by rugged countryside, you’ll find the only access to this home is by the owner’s private vehicle – setting the tone for a truly immersive stay on the Gower Peninsula. 

From the moment of arrival, you’ll want to pause and savour the secluded and remote nature of this setting. Formerly a quarryman's house and a smuggler's inn, the owners have since restored this whitewashed cottage into a seaside sanctuary. 

Featuring a mix of traditional features alongside contemporary comforts, every detail has been considered to fill your stay with lightness and ease. So whether you’re staying cosy by the fire or exploring the delights of the garden, there’s a wonderful sense of character and charm to this home.

The building dates back to the beginning of the eighteenth century, and blends its long history with modern comforts. You'll love the wooden beams and inglenook fireplace – on chilly evenings, you can light up the stove and get cosy. When the sun is shining, you can head outside to enjoy some alfresco drinks on the patio while the kids play on the lawn. And, you'll even have company – there is a family of friendly chickens who will happily provide you with eggs for your morning omelette.

As the home is right on the beach, you'll love spending time beside the water, admiring the views and even paddling on warm days. Serious hikers and casual walkers alike will enjoy exploring the nearby coastal path and surrounding countryside. And, if you fancy a change of scene, you can drive over into The Mumbles to visit the pier and have a pint of local ale in one of the pubs.

The popular Plas Farm Trail passes right by the cottage's front door, and a short road leads you down to the banks of the River Clydach then into a private bluebell wood. A twenty-minute car ride will bring you to the Brecon Beacons, where you can try your hand at a range of outdoor activities including rock climbing and kayaking. And, if you fancy a day at the seaside, you can drive to the Gower Peninsula in forty minutes to discover hidden beaches. 

Tales from the Mabinogion

Make yourself a cup of tea and take it outside to your private riverside terrace, where the sound of the water cascading along the rocky riverbed and the many birds that visit it is all you need to feel content. Part of a small complex of cottages, around a central courtyard, it's set in an estate boasting more than a hundred acres of land – including hillside meadows, woodland and streams. 

The building you'll be calling home was once part of the home farm for the impressive Plas Cilybebyll Estate and was most likely stables and grooms' quarters – although some of its stone features hark back to the estate's noble history. Dive into its fascinating past and you'll spot links to the descendants of the ancient Welsh kings, the Norman invasion, Iolo Morgannwg and more. You'll even find an arrow slit in the lounge and another in the ground floor wet room wall.

Cleverly converted and architect designed, this home uses green energy and is insulated with sheep's wool. It's a surprisingly modern and comfortable home for a small family or a couple of friends here to make the most of its idyllic rural setting. By day, explore the farm thanks to a trail that starts at your door, visiting cattle and spotting wildlife as you go. If you're a keen cyclist, you're within striking distance of the Afan Forest and Bike Park Wales, with safe storage for your equipment.

Just an eight-minute drive from the town of Pontardawe and less than half an hour from Swansea, you'll feel as though this fairytale setting is tucked well away from the rest of the world.

So whether you’re listening to the sound of the water on the patio, enjoying a meal under the trees or relaxing with a long soak in the bath, you’ll find this home provides a constant sense of serenity.  

Days can be spent admiring the local wildlife, observing ancient plant fossils and hiking across this majestic landscape – there’s a farm trail leading directly from the house. You’ll also find the nearest supermarket, pubs and cafes are just minutes away.

About five minutes' walk from the Mumbles seafront, this cottage is exactly the sort of cosy place you'll look forward to returning to after a long day out in the open air.

If you're here during the warmer months, you can sit outside and watch the sky go through its daily transformation from the terrace, but if it's too cold to even think about doing that, you can hunker down next to the wood burner in the open-concept living area or luxuriate in the bathtub instead.

The design throughout is classy and uncomplicated, with smart wooden floors, wooden furnishings and chic tiling in both the kitchen and bathroom doing all the heavy lifting. Sometimes, you really don't need to go over the top with it.

When it comes to seeing a little more of the local area, you can reach plenty of attractions on foot, including Oystermouth Castle four minutes away and Rotherslade Bay taking about a quarter of an hour. Even closer than both of those, there's a fish and chips shop at the end of the road, which is sure to come in handy when you're not in the mood to cook.

Then head out onto the patio for a cocktail alongside the area's striking sunsets. You’ll be just a thirty minutes’ walk to the stunning Three Cliffs Bay – stop at the 12th-century ruins of Pennard Castle on the way, grab a bite at the popular Three Cliffs coffee shop or join the Wales Coastal Path for impressive views. Golfers, hikers and beach-goers will appreciate this wonderfully comfortable base, set in the middle of a gorgeous stretch of countryside and coast.

Milton

Perfect for a pair, this retro apartment is nestled between two scenic beaches. Despite being a bit far from Swansea's centre, you'll be right on the coast – a worthwhile trade as it's only a fifteen-minute walk to Langland Bay and thirty to Mumbles. It's a top-floor apartment, so expect to climb some stairs – but that aside, you'll have a good amount of space here to chill out and unwind. There isn't a TV, so bring a book or a deck of cards to pass along the time. Or, switch off completely and spend all your time with your toes in the sea.

Situated less than five minutes' walk from Mumbles seafront, this renovated fisherman's cottage is a charming address in a particularly picturesque corner of south Wales.

Aside from the exposed brickwork around the living room's fireplace, contemporary design is king here, with smart parquet flooring, chic furnishings and sparing use of colour all making for a space that's pleasing to the eye. The surfboard hanging on the dining room wall is a nice nod to the local area, while the views of Oystermouth Castle and Swansea Bay from the top-floor bedroom are rather special, too.

However, it's also a home that's innately cosy, too. After a bracing dip in the sea, it's easy to warm up next to the crackling log burner or in the large P-shaped bathtub. When the evenings are warm, the courtyard garden complete with an outdoor shower, a barbecue and alfresco seating is sure to be the setting for long feasts that stretch on into the night.

As countless families and groups of friends will attest, Mumbles is a fantastic location for an action-packed holiday and there are plenty of beaches to be discovered nearby, including Langland Bay four minutes' drive away. There's a good choice of restaurants, plus the Pier and Oystermouth Castle, that can be reached on foot, while the salt marshes and castles of the Gower AONB are but a short drive away.

End of the Lane

Just when you think you've seen everything when it comes to interior design, you're presented with a kitchen complete with illuminated art installation centred around a large rock and you're rendered a little speechless. It shouldn't work, but we have to admire the chutzpah – you won't be short of conversation starters with guests at least.

Aside from this curio, the Victorian cottage is fairly conventional. There's a minimalist approach to decoration, with a strict colour palette of white and blue, plus only the bare necessities when it comes to furnishings – although there are a few eye-catching pieces, including the modern dining set.

The home benefits from a small terrace with some seating, but there are plenty of coastal attractions to explore nearby if the weather's on your side. Mumbles Beach is all of two minutes' walk away, but there are some more scenic seaside spots that are easily reachable on foot – Rothersalde Bay takes twenty minutes, for instance. Mumbles Pier is a quarter of an hour's walk away, too.

Just a stroll from Oxwich Bay's long sandy beach, dubbed one of the finest in the country, this spacious home dates back to the 1840s. Extended and smartly modernised over the years, it still retains much of its old-world charm, with wood beams (thought to have been originally taken from a local shipwreck) and a delightful stone fireplace in the cosy living room – perfect for winter escapes. But if you're visiting in the summer months, this home has a rather special feature. In its private, walled courtyard you'll find a heated swimming pool.

Set on the crest of a hill, there are some excellent sea views to be had from the first floor – including from the roll-top bathtub. And there's a large conservatory where you can sit and enjoy the sunshine, with Georgian-style French doors opening out to a lovely sunny patio with outdoor sofas. Cooking at home will be a breeze in the large and well-equipped kitchen and if you're lucky with the weather you can choose to barbecue down by the pool.

Just a short walk from a restaurant and a hotel, there's also a local castle to explore and some of the best coastal footpaths are easily accessed from your door. Further afield, Rhossili is just a seventeen-minute drive and The Mumbles is twenty-five minutes away.
