About five minutes' walk from the Mumbles seafront, this cottage is exactly the sort of cosy place you'll look forward to returning to after a long day out in the open air.

If you're here during the warmer months, you can sit outside and watch the sky go through its daily transformation from the terrace, but if it's too cold to even think about doing that, you can hunker down next to the wood burner in the open-concept living area or luxuriate in the bathtub instead.

The design throughout is classy and uncomplicated, with smart wooden floors, wooden furnishings and chic tiling in both the kitchen and bathroom doing all the heavy lifting. Sometimes, you really don't need to go over the top with it.

When it comes to seeing a little more of the local area, you can reach plenty of attractions on foot, including Oystermouth Castle four minutes away and Rotherslade Bay taking about a quarter of an hour. Even closer than both of those, there's a fish and chips shop at the end of the road, which is sure to come in handy when you're not in the mood to cook.

On sunny days, you can head outside for a closer look and sip a cup of coffee on the patio while the kids explore the sprawling shared gardens. Even the most reluctant of chefs will be tempted by its pearly white surfaces and huge kitchen island. Even if you're not the one cooking, you'll love spending time in this social space – chatting, playing board games, and listening to music. 

This home also benefits from a delightful garden, with steps leading down to your own football pitch. It’s in Mumbles, a seaside suburb with a Victorian pier, a long sweep of sandy beach and a medieval castle. We’re not exaggerating when we say the beach is mere footsteps away, just across the road. From here, you can follow the traffic-free walking path along the coast to Swansea, or to the wild headland in the other direction.

Returning to this cottage after a brisk seaside walk is a delight, especially with the electric fireplace glowing in the living room. You can watch the waves from the comfy sofa, thanks to the big sash window in the living room. There’s a dining table in here too, or you can opt for the more casual breakfast table in the full kitchen. Upstairs, the sea view continues in plush bedrooms and the loft landing is home to a bean-bag-strewn hang-out den. This period home isn’t the flashiest in our collection, but we think it’s a homey spot and we love the location.

In fact, it's so off-grid that you'll be required to leave your car in a secure spot and decamp into your host's Land Rover for the final mile, setting off down a rutted path and fording a stream before pulling up outside – setting the tone for an adventurous stay in the Welsh Wilderness.

First appearing in local records around 1700, the original part of this cottage is thought to be considerably older. After all, it wouldn't have served as a store for illicit contraband if its existence was known to everyone. Over time, it's been restored to create a rustic retreat that's equipped with all the mod cons required for a comfortable stay, including underfloor heating, a rolltop bath and an inglenook fireplace.

The building dates back to the beginning of the eighteenth century, and blends its long history with modern comforts. You'll love the wooden beams and inglenook fireplace – on chilly evenings, you can light up the stove and get cosy. When the sun is shining, you can head outside to enjoy some alfresco drinks on the patio while the kids play on the lawn. And, you'll even have company – there is a family of friendly chickens who will happily provide you with eggs for your morning omelette.

As the home is right on the beach, you'll love spending time beside the water, admiring the views and even paddling on warm days. Serious hikers and casual walkers alike will enjoy exploring the nearby coastal path and surrounding countryside. Just a stroll from Oxwich Bay's long sandy beach, dubbed one of the finest in the country, this spacious home dates back to the 1840s. Extended and smartly modernised over the years, it still retains much of its old-world charm, with wood beams (thought to have been originally taken from a local shipwreck) and a delightful stone fireplace in the cosy living room – perfect for winter escapes. Set on the crest of a hill, there are some excellent sea views to be had from the first floor – including from the roll-top bathtub. Jutting off the south coast of Wales, the Gower peninsula was the first area in the UK to be designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, but it's not just the bucolic landscape that's worthy of praise – homes like this deserve a share of the credit, too.

From the front, the stone facade looks as rustic as can be, but you'll see that plenty of modern additions have been made in recent years. This cosy cottage is located in the heart of Oxwich village, just a five-minute walk from the glorious beach and sand dunes of Oxwich Bay. Not only is it superbly located, but the home is lovely, from the whitewashed exterior, to the contemporary interior, to the spacious garden. 

We love the subtle coastal theme that runs through this home, creating a light, airy, and comfortable feel to the place. The modernity is balanced out by traditional touches, such as the cast iron log burner, the conservatory, and of course, the country house-style kitchen. It's a sociable space, opening up the floor to chats, board games, drinks, and so on. The conservatory leads you out to the idyllic garden – we can just picture the lovely the breakfasts spreads out in the fresh morning air, sipping on cups of tea while planning the day ahead.

When you've returned home after exploring Oxwich and the wider Gower Peninsula, you'll love relaxing on the plush sofa in front of the fireplace, a well-deserved glass of wine in hand. You could whip up dinner in the kitchen to be enjoyed around the country house-style dining table, or if you don't fancy cooking, make a reservation at the village's Michelin star restaurant for a special treat. Hidden away among bucolic south Welsh countryside, the estate on which this chateau-style house sits on dates back to the 14th century. However, those visiting in the 21st century will find a whole host of reasons to fall in love with the property.

Walking around the interior is a bit like wandering about a museum for there are historic features everywhere you look, whether it's the stained glass window, ornate fireplace or Elizabethan-era staircase. The wood-panelled drawing room is a particular favourite of ours, mostly for the fact that it contains a secret door leading to the library.

If we've made it sound fusty and dusty so far, that couldn't be further from the truth. Although you can pass many an hour within the grounds, there are plenty of opportunities for walking and wildlife spotting in the local area, while the Brecon Beacons National Park is only twenty minutes away by car, too.
