While the coastal resort of Hersonissos is a vibrant spot for dining and drinking, there are pockets of serenity and seclusion slightly inland. Only a twenty-minute walk from Hersonissos Beach, and a forty-minute drive from Agios Nikolaos, this villa offers an experience of complete luxury in the village of Piskopiano.

After winding past traditional tavernas and cafés, arriving at this vast home is quite the contrast. Glass-fronted balconies and terraces, a pentagon-shaped infinity pool, and lush green lawns give the impression of an LA-style mansion on this ancient island. But it’s not just about the exteriors. 

Inside, while you admire its tasteful, minimalist decor, you’ll soon find the facilities are anything but minimal. Use the internal lift to discover the gym, Swedish sauna, and hydromassage Jacuzzi on the lower-ground floor. Or pay a visit to the upstairs bedrooms, with exposed stone feature walls, balconies, and gorgeous tiling in the en-suites.

This villa is in a handy location, just three hundred metres from the traditional Greek village of Piskopiano and within a mile and a half of a handful of beaches. While the minimalist decor may not be to everyone’s tastes, there’s plenty to enjoy here, including an integrated Jacuzzi in the swimming pool, spectacular sunsets, and views of the Aegean Sea from the balcony. You’re also only twelve miles from one of Crete’s must-see landmarks, the ancient Palace of Knossos.

With a heavy focus on Greek outdoor living, this villa is the perfect spot for an action-packed family holiday. The outdoor kitchen set-up is perfect for alfresco dinners, and we love the veranda at the bottom of the garden for cocktails. Although some of the furnishings are dated, the place is plenty comfortable, and the sea views from the balcony are a nice touch. Location-wise, the sandy beaches of Hersonissos and the local water park are less than a fifteen-minute drive away, and day trips are easy, too – if you can get the kids out of the pool, that is.

If you're looking for Greece without crowds of beachgoers, this rural villa just a short walk from the sandy beaches of Hersonissos is a perfect choice. Located in a remote spot, the port city of Heraklion is also just a quick drive away, giving you convenience without the noise of a beach resort. The villa itself is within a shared complex, although privacy is not a problem. It caught our eye for its generous outdoor space, with a swimming pool, sheltered garden and barbecue on the terrace. So you can soak up the sea views and surrounding natural beauty whilst enjoying a glass of wine on the balcony or lazing on sun loungers by the pool.

Located in the Bay of Stalis, this villa is surrounded by an abundance of magnificent flora. Just a seven-minute walk from the beach of Stalis, you don’t have to go far to enjoy the crystal-clear waters of the Cretan Sea. Drapano Beach and Star Beach are also within 2.5 kilometres of the villa, if you fancy a bit of beach hopping. However you choose to fill your days, you’ll have everything you need to relax when you return home in the evenings, with a stone barbecue and terrace providing the perfect spot for an alfresco dinner with mountain views.

This welcoming home is located just 800 metres from the sandy shores of Hersonissos. It’s also a thirty-minute drive from Heraklion, making it a great base from which to explore the island. You will have neighbours here, but it feels private and secluded thanks to the sheltered garden and terrace. From here, you can soak up the sea views whilst swimming in the pool or cooking up a treat on the barbecue. Inside, the rooms might not be suitable for those with reduced mobility but it’s child-friendly, and your host can arrange nice extras including babysitting services and beauty treatments.

Situated in the Hersonissos region of Crete, this spacious suite with stunning seafront views and manicured lawns is ideal for a small family or two couples. You'll be sharing the swimming pool with guests from the neighboring villas but will have access to a private section on the beach, as well as your own furnished balcony where you can enjoy an evening tipple from the free mini-bar. The one-time Roman port of Hersonissos is a short walk away from the villa and offers lots in the way of architecture, restaurants, and shops.

Nestled in the north-eastern corner of Crete, this villa is an ideal base for a coastal stay. Privacy is limited here, however – the garden is overlooked by the neighbouring home while inside, the mezzanine bedroom is semi-open to the space below and has an open en-suite. With two guests sleeping on the pull-out bed in the living room at full occupancy, we think this home is better suited to families who don’t mind sharing their space. For days out of the villa, seaside seekers can easily get their coastal fix, with Malia beach just 600 metres away.

Within walking distance of Gouves beach and a short drive from Heraklion, this villa's location and facilities make it shine. The large garden is equipped with a barbecue area and private pool, and the downstairs game room with billiards is great for families. There are no bedrooms on the ground floor here, so guests with limited mobility may be better off looking elsewhere. But with a kitchenette as well as the main kitchen and more bed space than guest space, there's plenty of room for everyone.

This first-floor villa offers privacy and peace with all the luxuries of a boutique hotel. With a free limousine from the airport and a decadent arrival hamper of food, wine, and comfy slippers, you're guaranteed a warm welcome. There are plenty of standout features here – a sauna, balcony, and home cinema, plus direct access to a private section of the beach and a pool where you can request a waiter service. You'll be hard-pressed to leave, but we think the on-site bar and restaurant offer tempting incentives. And the eateries, monuments and shops of Heraklion are less than 27km away, perfect for a day trip.

The huge outdoor space at this contemporary villa caught our eye. There’s a well-kept lawn, a heated pool, hammocks and a shady dining area to enjoy, all with fantastic sea views. Inside, the open plan areas have been designed to let in lots of natural light and the decor is simple yet stylish. There’s even a private sauna here, which you don’t find in many Greek villas. And when you’re ready to explore, the nearest beach is within walking distance and the buzzing town of Heraklion is just a short drive away.    

From the Pool to the Horizon

Found in the small and traditional village of Piskopiano, this two-storey Hersonissos home offers plenty of Cycladic style. We love the terrace, and the inclusion of a hot tub is a nice touch – though it can be seen from nearby restaurant terraces, it's a great spot for catching the sun. With plenty of parking space, the home can be turned into a base for exploring all of Crete, while nearby you'll find the lively downtown area of Hersonissos just a twenty-minute walk away.

The ancient island of Crete is steeped in mythology and ancient wonders. But despite the historic intrigue of its rugged coastlines, there are some modern pockets that might surprise you. Ten minutes on foot from the golden shores of Gournes Beach, and a sixteen-minute drive from the urban capital of Heraklion, this striking villa is sure to catch your eye.

From the bold exterior, featuring brilliant white walls and angular architecture, it feels reminiscent of the top deck of a luxury yacht. Chrome railings frame the vast balconies, and chunky pillars are a nod back to the ancient architecture of Greek monuments. Surrounded by a lush, green garden, your private pool plays the role of the sea in this homage to island life.

As you head to the interior, you’ll pass by your traditional outdoor grill and terrace (where we imagine you’ll be returning later for a glass of Cretan wine at sunset). This charming apartment in the quaint village of Benitses is the perfect place for embracing a slower pace of life. It draws you in for a getaway of fresh cups of coffee on the flowery balcony, leisurely walks to the nearby sandy beach, and afternoons spent exploring the village.

There's everything you need here for a comfortable stay. Despite the apartment being on the cosy side, the bedroom is beautifully spacious and the kitchen is surprisingly well-equipped. We love how the kitchen and bathroom take on a more modern look with new appliances and sparkling surfaces, while the bedroom is more traditional and cosy. You'll love waking up and stepping straight out onto your balcony, listening to the songs of the early birds and feeling the warmth of the morning glow. 

When you want to explore, you're just 100 metres away from the sugary white beaches of Benitses. Relax on a sun lounger while sipping on a nice cold Mythos, occasionally taking a dip in the turquoise waters. If you get itchy feet, the traditional fishing village is one with a long history, which you discover as you wander around its cobbled streets. If you fancy something more strenuous, then the area is full of excellent hiking trails among the lush greenery. You're likely to spot some beautiful hidden churches along the way, too. After a day well spent, nothing beats a crisp glass of wine on your balcony, before heading out to sample the village's famous seafood.

Perched close to Crete's northern coastline, this white villa is one of a small cluster of homes that come with a whole host of amenities for enjoying the island's famously agreeable climate. 

Straight off the bat, we have to mention the private swimming pool surrounded by loungers, but there's also an outdoor kitchen and a table ready and waiting for alfresco feasts. In this outdoor space, it's possible to spot Cretan mountains and the Aegean Sea, but there's an even better view to be had from the first-floor balcony.

Inside, glass doors and large windows bring in copious amounts of natural light, which makes it a bright and pleasant space in which to relax. The interior design is pretty pared-back and straightforward, which is perhaps understandable given how great the outdoor space is.

When you want to see a little more of the local area, you can go for a spot of swimming and sunbathing on Star Beach, only 4km away, or treat yourself to dinner in a restaurant in Hersonissos, about 3km away.

This elegant home can be found directly in front of Kokkini Hani’s beach, and just 600 metres from Konaki Beach. The sea views are wonderful and can be enjoyed from the private salt-water infinity pool, the alfresco dining area, and from many of the villa’s suites. Some of the bedrooms even have their own Jacuzzi on a private balcony – the perfect setting for sunset. There’s also a cave-shaped sauna and a gym, so there’s something for everyone. Promising sea views from the terrace, this ground-floor home is great for a coastal getaway. Given the restaurants within walking distance, we don't think you'll mind the lack of an oven – there's still a decent kitchenette for preparing breakfasts and snacks. Baby travel equipment, children's books, and games can be provided to young families. While you may see your neighbours outdoors, perhaps you'll spend more time at Stalidas Beach. Plus, Hersonissos and Malia are 3 kilometres away if you're kid-free and seeking nightlife.

Ideal for a large group of friends or several families travelling together, this villa has plenty of room. Two of the bedrooms are in a separate area with a sitting room and kitchenette, so you won’t all be crowding each other in the main villa. The outside space here is the main event, with sea views, a private heated pool, a hot tub, and a barbecue area. Just a few minutes walk from the beach and with a balcony and terrace, we found this Crete home to be perfect for sun lovers. The pool's triangular shape means you're unlikely to be swimming lengths, but it's a nice spot to cool off. Alternatively, the alfresco area lets you enjoy the heat in the shade – cocktails optional. The home is surrounded by other villas, so you won't find much in the way of a view here, but the beach is just 200 metres away. If you want to explore the rest of the island, take advantage of the free parking here or head to the nearby bus stop.

We also imagine you’ll find perfect contentment lounging by the private pool and relaxing under the shaded terrace.
