We were sold when we first saw this home's panoramic sea views – and we're pretty sure you will be, too. Set just a short flip-flop from the sandy shores of Ammoudi Beach in Zakynthos –⁠ this newly-built apartment is tailor-made for easy holidays by the sea. The private terrace with views of nearby Agios Nikolaos Bay is the showstopper here. It’s a prime spot for morning breakfasts, and the bakery at the end of the road can help with supplies. The second bedroom handily doubles as a study space. However, if you’re using it as a bedroom, two guests will share a double sofa bed which may be better suited to children sharing or one adult.

At first glance, this villa perched on top of a Cretan cliff is an architectural marvel, but the most impressive aspects lie beyond its appearance. The architects behind the project used ecologically sensitive practices during construction, from natural paints and installing energy-efficient fittings to choosing sustainably sourced stone.

This should give you a sense of quiet satisfaction while you wind back and relax here, which is remarkably easy to do. The infinity pool has glorious views of Mirabello Bay, as well as cascading waterfalls and a Jacuzzi. After a dip, there are numerous terraces on which to take a breather, including a pergola with a barbecue underneath if you're feeling a little peckish.

In this corner of western Crete, you're not only spoiled for beaches, but history abounds in this area — the nearby island of Spinalonga can be reached by boat from Elounda and has an impressive fortress from its time under Venetian occupation.

An excellent choice for two couples sharing, each bedroom has direct access to the wraparound panoramic balcony and an en-suite shower room to kickstart your day. Location-wise, the centre of Elounda and its wide sandy beach and seafront restaurants are just a two-kilometre stroll downhill –⁠ and you can always hop in a taxi on your way back home later.

Stay just 400 metres from the centre of Agios Nikolaos on the gorgeous Bay of Mirabello, when you choose this well-placed apartment. There’s a small harbour to explore or watch the world go by at one of the cafés and restaurants lining the shores of the Voulismeni Lake. For beach lovers, there are the nearby beaches of Ammos and Almiros. The apartment itself is modern, but there are stairs to climb (something to bear in mind if you have limited mobility). Also, this home has a designated outdoor seating area on a shared terrace, but it’s not really private, so you’ll need to be willing to chat with the neighbours.

With direct sea views and a private balcony, this compact apartment is ideal for those looking for a Cretan getaway in popular ​​Agios Nikolaos. A modern minimalist design lets the blue backdrop do the talking here, with a tempting freestanding tub in the bedroom offering a luxurious way to take in the vistas. While at capacity one guest will be sleeping on the sofa bed in the living area which will make the space a bit cramped, we reckon you’ll be spending your days exploring the city’s bustling harbour and beaches, or even taking advantage of the plethora of extra services on offer, including boat trips and beauty treatments.

For a convenient base in Agios Nikolaos, you can’t do much better than this apartment. It’s just 100 metres from Paralia Kitroplatia, and is also close to Ammos Beach. You’ll likely spend most of your time on the balcony, admiring the sea view and soaking up the sun. The apartment is spread over two floors, with one bedroom on the top floor, ideal for a couple seeking a bit more privacy. There’s plenty of space here for everyone to spread out, and the kitchen and dining area means you can easily cook at home.

Inside, you’ll find luxuries like the Finnish sauna, which may come in handy after a workout – there’s exercise equipment here, along with a small basketball court. For days at the beach, you need only walk 200m to reach the Blue Flag-awarded Havania Beach. One guest will be on a sofa bed, which may not be suitable for everyone.

One of our favourite spots is this villa’s attic – it’s a secluded spot, furnished with a desk and sitting area and it overlooks the azure waters of the private sandy beach. This place is located just two steps away from the development’s private beach club so you can be on the sand in five seconds and have access to all kinds of water sports and beach services.

If you want to explore further afield, we’d recommend the ancient city of Lato, which is thirty minutes in the car.
