Located in peaceful Megalorchori on the island of Santorini, this historic villa offers a relaxing retreat from which to explore the beauty of the village and its picturesque surroundings. 

Dating back to the 19th century, this home was once owned by one of the island’s feudal landlords whose wealth stemmed from the export of Vinsanto wine, which is still produced in Santorini to this day. Traces of the home’s past can be seen in its heavy wooden doors, polished wood floors, vaulted ceilings and the original stone arch in the kitchen. Alongside these historic features, you’ll find contemporary furnishings and modern comforts aplenty – we’re particularly enchanted by the main bedroom’s dreamy four-poster bed.

It’s the home’s outsides, however, that really steals the show. Not only is there a terrace off of the kitchen equipped with a long table and chairs for alfresco meals while looking out onto  Megalorchori’s Venetian bell towers, but there’s a beautiful flower-framed courtyard too where you’ll find a dazzling swimming pool. Spend your days catching some rays on the loungers before cooling off in the water and luxuriating long afternoons away in total serenity. 

When you’re ready to venture out for some exploring, make a beeline for the central village square just a short stroll away with its pretty churches and winding cobbled paths. When winding up the path to this home, you'll be struck by its traditional beauty. Reminiscent of ancient Greece, the original lime kiln was built by the owner's family over two hundred years ago. Given the rustic look of this stunning villa, you wouldn't expect to see Smeg appliances, Smart TVs, and Simmons mattresses. The blend of the old meets the new is perfectly done. It's chic and comfortable while retaining that quintessentially Santorini charm.

Swing in the hammock, glide through the infinity pool, and lounge as you watch the sun dance on the Aegean Sea. It has since been refurbished to become a set of four self-contained homes that can be booked out all at once. There are still signs of its history, from the cave-like rooms and the massive piece of machinery that sits in the middle of one of the living rooms.

There’s an alfresco dining spot too that’s just waiting to be used for Greek treats in the sun, and when the rays get too strong, you can retreat inside amid the villa’s cool whitewashed walls. There are a few signs of wear and tear in the decor and the kitchen is on the small side. But with Fira just a ten-minute walk away, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to sample the local fare. And when you’re ready for a dip in the sea, pebbly Gialos Beach is 3.5 kilometres from your door.

Though this villa's crisp contemporary design and Cycladic architecture is eye-catching, the true magic happens only when you're facing away from it. From the tiered terrace, where you'll find ample seating and the private pool,  picture-perfect views of the rolling landscape and deep-blue Aegean Sea unfold, thanks to the house's hillside position. From here, you can reach the tavernas of picturesque Pyrgos in moments. The beach lies a little further away, but with a car rental at your disposal, it'll take minutes to get there. Such is the beautiful landscape in abundance and the hilly terrain from which to appreciate it, it seems a waste to go to the Greek islands and not stay somewhere with a decent view. This villa on the highest point of Santorini's capital is, therefore, an excellent choice. From the terrace, guests are treated to a panoramic vista of the Aegean Sea and the Tholos Naftilos volcano sat in the middle.

As you would hope, there are plenty of places where you can sit and gawp at this pretty scene, including alfresco dining tables, lounges and a hot tub with an uninterrupted view of the caldera. 

Although your attention might naturally be drawn elsewhere, the home itself is a treat for the eyes, too. Although it has recently been reconstructed, it has been built in the neoclassical style popular with affluent residents that made the island their residence in the nineteenth century. As a result, you'll see domed ceilings, arched doorways and thick walls, as well as an eclectic collection of artwork and decorative items.

The prime location in the middle of Fira means that there are plenty of restaurants and cultural distractions within walking distance, including the Megaro Gizi Museum. The town's old harbour isn't too far away either.

We love it here in the evening when the garden lights come on, giving this space a magical feel. 

Inside, whitewashed walls show off the ornately carved wood furniture to a treat. We adore the four-poster bed in the master bedroom too. This place is the perfect Santorini retreat for a family or group of friends.

If you fancy a day at the beach, Vlychada is just over a mile, while the dramatic black sands of Perissa are just over 2 miles away. For history lovers, Akrotiri, a Cycladic Bronze Age settlement, is a ten-minute drive.

Located centrally in Mesaria, this white-washed and minimal home is ideal for a relaxing stay in Santorini away from the tourist hot spots. The communal space inside the apartment is pretty limited, and there isn’t a full kitchen – while the home can sleep up to four guests, we think this is best suited to a couple looking to explore the island. The private outdoor dining area is perfect for socialising and enjoying a couple of sundowners, while the terrace and heated plunge pool make for the ultimate sun-worshipping location.

There are plenty of seaside restaurants and local tavernas to discover, but if you fancy a walk, trek up the rocky cliffs to the top of Mesa Vouno and explore the chalky ruins of Ancient Thira – trust us, the climb is worth it for the views.

As you can tell, we adore the far-reaching vistas, but the stylish interiors really caught us by surprise.
