From the moment we saw the views from this villa in the village of Firostefani, we were sold. Endless stretches of blue radiate from all sides, best enjoyed from the terrace and hot tub. There’s an alfresco dining spot too that’s just waiting to be used for Greek treats in the sun, and when the rays get too strong, you can retreat inside amid the villa’s cool whitewashed walls. There are a few signs of wear and tear in the decor and the kitchen is on the small side. But with Fira just a ten-minute walk away, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to sample the local fare. And when you’re ready for a dip in the sea, pebbly Gialos Beach is 3.5 kilometres from your door.

Another highlight here is the Greek breakfast with locally sourced ingredients which can be savoured in the room, terrace or the host's secluded courtyard (handy as there isn't a kitchen here). Inside, the suite is decorated in a simple, traditional style, reflecting the island. The location is fabulous too – it's 100 metres from the Megaro Gyzi Museum and 150 metres from the cable car which takes you to the old port. The centre of Fira and the Archaeological Museum of Fira are both just 200 metres away too.

This apartment is located in the picturesque village of Oia, the most famous village in Santorini. With its traditional narrow streets, blue-domed churches and sun-drenched verandas, Oia offers a serene and beautiful setting for a relaxing retreat. This home is on the small side, but it’s perfect for a romantic break or a solo trip. The private terrace and hot tub overlook the sparkling Aegean Sea, and you really couldn’t ask for a better view. While parking is possible at the entrance of the village, a car isn’t essential as the area is best explored on foot, with Katharos Beach just a 19-minute walk away.

Such is the beautiful landscape in abundance and the hilly terrain from which to appreciate it, it seems a waste to go to the Greek islands and not stay somewhere with a decent view. This villa on the highest point of Santorini's capital is, therefore, an excellent choice. Although it has recently been reconstructed, it has been built in the neoclassical style popular with affluent residents that made the island their residence in the nineteenth century. The prime location in the middle of Fira means that there are plenty of restaurants and cultural distractions within walking distance, including the Megaro Gizi Museum. The town's old harbour isn't too far away either.
