Located up in the hills, you'll discover a spectacular villa – complete with a clock tower – just outside the small village of Cellai, where time seems to stand still. 

Pad across terracotta-tiled floors, with wood beam ceilings above, and discover rooms filled with character and charm, where period features and modern touches sit effortlessly alongside one another. Nowhere is this better displayed than in the contemporary kitchen and adjoining dining room with its antique stove. Each of the four bedrooms blends rustic charm with supreme comfort, while the bathrooms are fitted out with beautiful tiles and gleaming marble for a touch of luxury.

Step outside and you'll discover a lush landscape of terraced gardens, an inviting pool and breathtaking views over the Tuscan terrain. Your hosts recommend making the trip to Forno La Chiocciola, where you can stock up on Florentine speciality flatbread, schiaccata, each morning. Afterwards, place yourself poolside and settle in for a day of sunbathing, interrupted only by refreshing dips in the water and trips to the kitchen to get some more of that delicious bread.

Nestled in the rolling hills of Marche, this home is the definition of rural charm. The 200-year-old farmhouse is now a charming, four-bedroom villa showcasing both modern amenities and traditional style. Admire the exposed wooden beams and fireplace in the living space, and take in the views from the master bedroom's private balcony – whoever takes this room is very lucky indeed. The garden is an attraction in its own right, with flourishing flowers and shaded dining areas where you can enjoy breakfast in the morning. Relax by the pool with a book and soak up the views, returning to the house only to rustle up lunch in the kitchen to enjout in the conservatory, one of our favourite spots. If it's even possible, the gardens perhaps look more charming after the sun goes down, when the pool lights up and lamps cast the trees in a warm glow. While this home's charm comes from its rural location, you're just a twenty-minute drive from Pesaro, a coastal city where you can visit palaces and take to the many cycling trails.

For the culture vultures, we'd suggest spending a day (at the very least) wandering the backstreets and alleyways of Florence. In our opinion, getting lost on a self-guided tour is the best way to get to know the artistic, architectural and cultural history of Tuscany.

Elegant and unique, this home makes for an excellent base in Tuscany. It’s in the village of Impruneta on the outskirts of Florence, surrounded by countryside, olive groves and vineyards – it also borders the Chianti Classico region. The centre of Florence is only 13 kilometres away, making day trips a breeze. The decor is traditional, with antiques at every turn, so it may not suit everyone. This elegant villa lies in the Chianti hills of the Tuscan countryside, just 19km from the city of Florence. The interior is perhaps not our most exciting, but the exterior is where this home really shines, with its massive 18,000 sqm garden. The alfresco dining areas and gazebos make for dream weddings and spectacular events. Not to mention the private bar (though you'll need to stock it yourself), plus the pool and hot tub offering hours of relaxation under the sun.

Once the summer residence of the Italian physicist Enrico Fermi, this beautiful Tuscan villa retains its country manor grandeur. The kitchen is the heart of the home, with its solid wood breakfast table and gas, range-style cooker set into the old hearth. It’s just outside of the charming town of Scarperia and only thirty minutes from Florence, tucked away amid rolling countryside. It’s an excellent area for cycling, with bikes and e-bikes available for hire – exploring the scenic routes and nearby vineyards is a delightful way to spend a day. The apartment features a vaulted roof and simple, fuss-free decor. It’s a comfortable and charming base for a holiday, and you’ll have access to the communal gardens and heated plunge pool – what more could you ask for?

Back in the 19th century, you would have caught farm animals seeking shelter in this stone building in rural Marche. Today, however, you're more likely to spot holiday-makers with some of the biggest grins you've ever seen.

Why the happiness? Well, it's very easy to fall in love with this home. The recent restoration work has managed to both retain characterful period features – such as the fireplaces and wooden ceiling beams – while adding a contemporary sheen that wouldn't be out of place in Italy's biggest cities. The layout is quite unique too, with the home now composed of two independent apartments, each with a wealth of living space and kitchens – ideal for two families travelling together.

Whenever you want to gather everybody together, there's ample space in the beautiful grounds filled with fragrant plants and trees. On warm afternoons, the natural-style swimming pool is sure to be popular, as will the leafy pergola ready and waiting for indulgent alfresco banquets.

If you're in the mood for sightseeing, the historic centre of Urbino – a UNESCO World Heritage Site, no less – is a good place to start and is only 23km away by car. The beaches of Fano are only half an hour's drive, too.

Racing fans might know Mugello for its circuit, but away from the petrol and screeching tyres, the Mugello countryside is a truly serene Tuscan gem. Just a twenty-five-minute drive from this famous track, and an hour from Florence, this rustic villa is a charming escape to rural life. Set on sloped, landscaped gardens with leafy trees, trailing foliage, and bright Mediterranean flowers, its traditional airs give way to some playful features. Keep the kids entertained with football on the five-a-side pitch in the garden, or head inside via the basement for foosball and a vintage pinball machine (‘big kids’ also welcome). Some might prefer a swim in the private pool, or sipping a negroni on one of the multiple patios, the choice is yours. The apartment boasts views of the surrounding scenery from large windows, and blends rustic charm with modern comfort – it’s a dreamy home-from-home. Florence is only thirty minutes away by car, and you’ll be even closer to the charming town of Scarperia.

In the Tuscan hills, nineteen kilometres from Florence and on the outskirts of Sieci, this gorgeous villa has panoramic views of the countryside. Dating back to the Middle Ages, the main house used to be a watchtower. It sits in a quiet, sunny spot on top of a hill, where forest pathways lead to a nearby lake. Inside, open fireplaces and exposed wooden beams give a traditional Italian farmhouse feel. Antiques meet rustic furniture and mod cons, giving this home a unique charm, with ample and comfortable accommodation. We particularly love the large master bathroom. But it's the garden that really steals the show – tumbling down the hill, surrounded by olive groves, meadows and woodland. Its centrepiece, of course, is the pool, but there is a wealth of spaces to eat, rest and play in sun or shade. Spend long afternoons by the water and evenings around the pizza oven, and play a round or two of table tennis as the sun goes down. The annexe on this home has been tastefully converted into a stylish three-storey apartment with its own bedroom, living room and kitchen – but the villa can be booked without it for a party of nine. The railway station and shops are around eight kilometres away, and there is a restaurant about two kilometres from the house.

This former hunting lodge was once used by the wealthy and powerful Medici family. Steeped in history, it sits in the green hills of the Florentine Mugello, with its own large gardens surrounded by vineyards. There are remnants of the past everywhere, with ancient beamed ceilings, archways and tiled floors, but it's been carefully brought up to date with an eclectic mix of vintage and modern furnishings. And need we point out those fabulous chandeliers in some of the bedrooms? Take the sweeping steps down to the pool or pull up a lounger amid the scented flowers and lemon trees. Walking in the garden here, you’ll also find an area dedicated to aromatic herbs – the perfect addition to a Tuscan lunch in the dining area under a wisteria-covered pergola. It's just a short drive to the freshwater oasis of Lake Bilancino and a day trip to Florence is no more than forty minutes away by car.
