Despite its position in an old, atmospheric square near Campo de’ Fiori, Falconry has been renovated recently, and most of the furniture has been made to measure, making the whole place feel very well crafted. Everything fits together, from the parquet floor to the various lamps, and even the terrace is taken care of, and not an afterthought. But, ever the professional, your host Michele hasn’t used that as an excuse to rest on his laurels. The flat itself is in perfect condition, and while it doesn’t have the feeling of a family home, that’s often a good thing when it's not a sprawling home with space for all the host's personal items. The two bedrooms are on opposite sides of the flat, which is perfect for groups of friends travelling together, though families might want little ones closer by, or not. We understand. Sandwiched between the river and lively Campo de' Fiori, you're in a prime location to explore the city. The square is home to the city's most vibrant (and occasionally overpriced) street market (Monday-Saturday mornings). Still, this famous foodie haven is a good place to stock up on fresh produce, just a five-minute walk from your apartment. Cross over the stone footbridge, Ponte Sisto, and within a couple of minutes, you'll be immersed in trendy Trastevere. With its cobbled streets lined with charmingly faded facades, innovative trattorias, and craft cocktail bars, there's plenty to keep you occupied well into the night.

The home is located in an old building which gives it its lofty proportions, but the interiors are distinctly modern and stylish - we love the light fittings and the mid-century modern furniture.

Thanks to the attention given to every corner of this luxury apartment, it really feels like a home. The owners take care of it personally, and it's easy to feel the emotion they put into the space. Sit on one of two balconies with a glass of Italian wine or enjoy a family meal in the light-filled living space (your host provides a welcome hamper or let them arrange a private chef for you). Each room has its own private bathroom, so it's perfect for a family or a big group of friends. A rarity In Rome, this place also has a parking space. There are even some glimpses of the Vatican City from this abode, or it's a ten-minute ride to this treasure trove of iconic art and architecture. It's a twenty-minute drive to the stunning Trevi Fountain or the Baldo Degli Ubaldi metro station is just a minute away on foot, if you want to explore further. For some peaceful green space, on the other hand – head to Parco di Villa Carpegna with its shady benches and fountains, a mere ten-minute stroll away.

Centrally located in the eternal city of Rome, this home is a mere stone's throw from several iconic landmarks, including the Ponte Sisto, where you can overlook the Tiber. And some of those sights you might even spot from the balcony, though when it comes to the outdoor seating, we prefer the patio table in the shade of the pergola. As for the home, the rustic charm of the rafters and furnishings is sweet and well-kept. It's worth noting that despite being spacious, this home's sleeping arrangements feature a double sofa bed and another room with two single sofa beds that might be more suitable for children. With two other double beds available, however, it's the ideal pad for a family getaway.

The Roman Centaur

Known as one of the most picturesque neighbourhoods in Rome, Trastevere is overflowing with trendy bars, mouth-watering restaurants,  and artisan shops. Vibrant, bohemian and steeped in authenticity, this is the place to be if you want to live like a local, and it's where you'll find this studio apartment. It's about a twenty-minute walk to the Pantheon, and though other landmarks like the Trevi Fountain and the Colosseum are around a half-an-hour away, this excellent location is well worth it. Spend afternoons roaming the pretty-as-a-postcard alleyways and people-watching in the piazzas, then grab an alfresco aperitif in the evenings at one of the world-class trattorias. After a busy day, come home to this snug apartment and relax in style. It has plenty of details that set it apart from the crowd, from the bold wallpaper to the ceramic leopard that greets you as you enter. The wooden beams and large windows hark back to Trastevere's history, and though it may be small, it feels like a cosy home-from-home, perfect for a couple wanting a romantic getaway in the heart of Rome.

Regular visitors to Rome will know that Prati, perched above the Vatican and across the Tiber, is the place to be. Within its wide, sweeping avenues and elegant buildings, there's high-end shopping and cool restaurants aplenty, but less of the crowds. Back at home, you’ll be surprised how spacious and light this home feels, thanks to those lofty, exposed beam ceilings and doors opening out onto a terrace (a rare treat for a property this central). 

Over the Tiber

Deep within the narrow, medieval streets of Rome, this period building hides a surprisingly modern apartment for up to five guests. It's not a huge space but it's been cleverly configured to make the most of what it has – and to make it feel comfortable and high-end at the same time. Decorated in on-trend whites, creams and greys, it's bright and fresh. The kitchenette is stowed away in a cupboard-like space in the living room and while it's perfect for the basics, it's not going to appeal to keen home cooks – but this is Rome, and some of the best restaurants, cafes and bars in the world are right on your doorstep. Our favourite feature of this home is the view onto the charming Piazza dei Satiri outside. And while we're talking location, the famous Campo de’ Fiori market is just around the corner.

A vineyard view isn’t what you expect from an apartment in the heart of Rome, but that’s what you get at this home. The study (or second bedroom) overlooks the vines of Rome’s Botanic Gardens, as though you’re in Tuscany or Chianti rather than the hip suburb of Trastevere. Bars and local trattoria fills the buzzing streets, but this apartment is a haven of calm amidst it all. The interior is a modern medley of soft green and grey, while the exterior boasts the traditional wooden shutters of medieval Italy. Big, arched doors in the master bedroom open up to a private terrace, dappled with greenery and set up with a couple of deckchairs and a drinks table. Inside, this luxurious bolthole hides a few surprises too. Alongside sleek architectural treasures (would you look at those marble-clad walls), you'll also discover some showstopping frescos nodding to the Renaissance era. This apartment makes a practical base in the Eternal City. It has everything you need to relax and unwind, from a desk for business travellers to a small balcony for sundowners – there's even wallpaper inspired by Italian gardens. There's also a small kitchen, though we think you'll prefer to dine out since Italy is known for its cuisine. Sleeping options are flexible here, as two bedrooms have a single bed and double bed, while the living room has a sofa bed. Location-wise, you're a bit far from the city centre – about twenty minutes by car – but the Vatican is about a fifteen-minute walk away.

Situated in Monteverde, this apartment boasts a charming rooftop terrace with plenty of space for you to relax and enjoy alfresco meals. From here, it's a short walk or bus ride to the quirky Trastevere district, with a great selection of pubs, eateries and shops, plus a well-connected Metro station. The home itself is perfectly practical for two or three guests – though the third person will be sleeping on a sofa bed. It's also worth noting that this home is located on the third floor without a lift, so we recommend it for those who can easily manage stairs.

Finding somewhere that can comfortably sleep eight (and ten, at a stretch) in the Jewish Quarter isn’t as straightforward as you might think. Finding somewhere that can comfortably sleep eight and has a view as good as Teatro’s is even harder. It looks down onto the Largo di Torre Argentina, which holds the ruins of four temples and Pompey’s Theatre. It’s a fantastic spot, and Teatro makes the most of it, with a simple design intended to not interfere.

Set in the heart of the historic district, overlooking the atmospheric square Largo dei library, all the must-see sights are walkable from here.

Get off to a flying start with a hefty dose of Roman life around the corner at Campo de Fiori (a three-minute walk) –⁠ by day, the piazza hosts one of the city's best-known markets, and by night, its bars and restaurants keep the night flowing. Or do like the locals with early-evening passeggiatas along the postcard-pretty River Tiber, it's just a four-minute walk from your door.

Back at home, this modern apartment housed in an ancient Roman villa of mighty proportions makes quite the first impression with its floor-to-ceiling windows flooding the space with natural daylight and revealing charming scenes of the pretty piazza below.

The designers have cleverly used the height of those lofty, exposed beam ceilings to create a nifty mezzanine level that houses the second bedroom. Meanwhile, strategically-placed house plants and contemporary artwork warm the loft-style space. When thoughts turn to food, you can easily rustle up a  bite to eat in the smart kitchen area. While this two-bedroom Rome apartment isn't the most stylish in our collection, its enviable location is what makes it stand out. If you're here to explore, you'll find plenty of galleries and museums nearby. Back at home, one bedroom offers courtyard views, while the other lets you peer through trees at the River Tiber. The kitchen, while looking in need of an update, is well-equipped – though we think you'll be taking advantage of stylish Regola's eateries more often than not.

This recently refurbished yet authentic home in Italy’s hot-blooded capital city can be yours for a little as 3 nights or for as long as a month or more. Located in the medieval neighbourhood of Borgo Pio, this home’s serene yet rustic interior, complete with wooden floors and ceilings, is reflective of its heritage and yet perfectly suited to modern living. Alternatively, cross the beautiful Ponte Sant’Angelo to reach the city centre. If entertaining from home is your bag, this home’s fully equipped kitchen means you can rustle up meals for friends in no time.

Location is where Noon Herald sets itself apart. It’s at the centre of a triangle that has the Vatican, Piazza Navona, and Trastevere as its points. The other big draw is the structure of the flat, with a double-height ceiling and the sloping beams – these help balance out the slightly spartan furniture elsewhere. It would be a good place for someone who is more used to hotels, as there are several services that are more commonly associated with them, such as daily bed turning and clean towels on request.

This elegant apartment is located in the Aurelio district of Rome. It’s a short walk from the Vatican and its museums, and a metro station and a bus stop are nearby to help you see the rest of the city’s sights. The apartment is bright and welcoming, with a balcony and an open-plan living and dining space. The bedrooms are interconnected with sliding doors, handy for those travelling with children. There’s a kitchen to cook in, though, with Rome’s culinary scene to explore, you might prefer to dine out.

It’s 100 metres from the Colosseum and the ruin-filled park of Colle Opio is your next-door neighbour. Wandering the surrounding streets it seems like every corner is home to an ancient church between family-run trattoria and gelaterias. The apartment is housed in a beautiful 18th-century building, and stepping inside you feel the opulence of an old-world parlour. Velvet seats at the bistro table, a velvet sofa piled high with cushions and suspended candelabra create the opulence, while the exposed stone and timber beams keep one foot firmly in the building’s history. Chess can provide the evening’s entertainment, which feels fitting amidst the gilded mirrors and oil paintings. Heading up the striking mesh-metal staircase, the master bedroom has a pretty arched window with a window seat providing the perfect spot for a bit of holiday reading.

Despite a small footprint, Saguaro makes great use of the space it has. The mezzanine creates a feeling of openness while the colours brighten the place. We also really liked Iacopo, who we found really patient and helpful (even for a Plum host). The area is an interesting one, and depending on your point of view, could be considered a downside, as it’s a bit out of many of the main tourist hotspots. It is, however, an opportunity to experience Rome as a Roman would, free from the crowds and vendors.


Saguaro

Nestled in the heart of Trastevere, this modern apartment is an ideal base for a family or a group of friends keen to be in the heart of the action. With a homely vibe and pops of colour providing character, you’ll find everything needed for a comfortable stay in this home. And location-wise, it ticks a lot of boxes. You don’t need a car to explore here – wander through the narrow alleys on foot, stopping off at authentic eateries and bars along the way. And a visit to Janiculum Hill, known locally as Gianicolo, is a must – the views across Rome are not to be missed.
