Stunning views are what caught our eye at this lakefront apartment. The wraparound balcony is the perfect place to enjoy them, whether you're tucking into an alfresco breakfast or savouring a sundowner. Although the interiors may not stack up to the surrounding scenery, they are practical and comfortable. There's also a sofa bed for two, but the space is a tad snug with it in use. Location-wise, Campione d'Italia is an Italian enclave entirely in Switzerland. Gourmet restaurants and local shops are nearby, while the other villages along Lake Como can be reached by ferry or car.

The view from this home’s private terrace is surely the envy of every building in town. From the wrought-iron bistro set beneath the pergola, your eyes can feast on a panorama of sparkling Lake Como, flanked by snow-capped mountains as orange-roofed villages tumble down the hillsides. Out here, you’ve got plenty of space to enjoy the view, from the dining table or perhaps lapping up the sun on a lounger. We love the ancient mosaic tiles on the covered veranda.

Inside, the plush sofa is aimed at the French doors, rather than the TV, so you can enjoy the view whatever the weather. A huge archway opens the living room up to the dine-in kitchen, and there’s a traditional wall-press filled with holiday reads for a quiet moment. Bedrooms are calming spaces in soothing neutral palettes and the master benefits from corner windows looking out to the mountains. 

You’re on a street in Argegno's old centre, right on the water. The lakeside swimming pool is a five-minute walk away, along with the ferry stop ready to whisk you across Lake Como to the likes of Bellagio, Menaggio or Varenna. Or, just stick around Argegno and enjoy the bars and restaurants that lace the town.

When we think of Lake Como, we dream of beautiful views over shimmering water and mountains beyond. With this apartment, you don't have to imagine – take a look at the vistas from the terrace. Okay, maybe you'd call them lake glimpses through the trees, but that adds to the charm. Inside, the interiors are rustic and at full capacity, two people will be sleeping on a sofa bed in the open-plan living space. If that's not an issue, there's plenty to explore out and about. Located in Blevio, there's the stunning Giardinetti Di Sorto, a short walk away, or go for a hike through the forests of Sasso del Lupo nearby.

Views of Northern Italy's peaceful Lake Maggiore don't come much better than this. It's a scene best admired from the private balcony of this smart townhouse perched on the hillsides overlooking the Borromeo's islands. Inside, the newly refurbished, pared-back interiors are perfect for a fuss-free stay for two, and the pretty suntrap garden to soak up the Italian sunshine is a nice touch. You'll need a car here as it's pretty remote with no amenities to walk to – but don't let that put you off. Stresa's regal seafront promenade and cobbled streets bustling with trattorias are just a five-minute drive away.

Borromeo

One glance at those Lake Como views and you'll fall in love with this cosy and romantic flat. There's nothing better than sitting around the dining table, sipping wine, nibbling on antipasti and watching the water ebb and flow out the window. Later on, snuggle up on the cushy sofas with a book or get comfortable in the bedrooms, resting up for an adventure-filled day. The design is a delightful mishmash of mid-century modern, classic Italian character and clean, contemporary style. Although it's compact, the cheery yellow kitchen is sure to put a smile on your face as you're rustling up breakfast, and with two showers, you won't have to worry about queuing in the mornings.

Location-wise, Carate Urio has oodles of old-world charm and an authentic, local atmosphere. Enjoy a cappuccino right by the water, then sprawl out on the small beach for a spot of sunbathing and swimming. In the evenings, stroll along the steeped, winding lanes in the village before grabbing a bite to eat at the traditional restaurants. And when you fancy exploring further afield, catch the ferry from Urio's dock (only a short walk away) to travel to Como.

Stairs here lead down to the water should you want to take a dip in the lake, while the villa’s magnificent gardens boast a secret pathway that takes you to medieval Torno’s centre in fifteen minutes. Your host can also organise boat trips for you. With Como also just a fifteen-minute drive from your, there’s no end to the magical memories in store.

From the cheerful exterior of the historic building to the little touches in the interior, great care and attention has been put into this abode. Take in the staggering views of beautiful Lake Como as you sip a coffee beside the large windows. Set the dining table in the relaxing living space and treat your other half to traditional spaghetti aglio e olio cooked up in your streamlined kitchenette. But if you’d rather hang up your chef’s apron and leave it to the professionals, sample Como’s glorious selection of restaurants and indulge in romantic dinners by the water, just a fifteen-minute stroll from your doorstep. Spend balmy afternoons exploring the town centre or hike up to the Monte Croce – it’ll take you just over an hour but the views are well worth it.

Right in the centre of the buzzing, lakeside city of Como, this bright and elegant apartment welcomes you for a slice of the dolce vita. The winding streets that surround this apartment are filled with vibrant bars and trendy restaurants, all within old-world buildings. Wander the streets and emerge onto Lake Como, where the lakefront is lined with cafés and bars serving Aperol spritz at the sun sets over the water. 

Back at the apartment, it’s a refreshing medley of stark white walls and dark-wood beams lining the ceiling. Sunlight streams into the bedroom and the open-plan living room from traditional Italian windows. And with air conditioning and an in-home washing machine, there’s no compromise on functionality. The huge living space is great for hanging out after a day of sightseeing, and we love the super squishy corner sofa. Crucially, the home is right in the heart of the pedestrian part of the city. You're right next to Palazzo Garibaldi, and plenty of restaurants, shops, bars. It's a short walk to the waterfront promenade too – we've taken longer to polish off a gelato.

Disembark and step inside to discover a spacious and stylish open-plan living area and kitchen, kitted out with all the culinary accoutrements you might need to whip up delicious homemade meals, just like nonna used to make.

From the living room, not only will you enjoy access to a private balcony through two sets of French doors, but also awe-inspiring panoramic views capable of bringing a tear to the eye. The soothing atmosphere of the bedrooms will help you relax after your journey, while there's a good amount of storage space so you can unpack and settle in. The main bedroom even finds room for a desk and enjoys access to an en-suite shower room.

When you're not sunbathing and swimming in the lake, explore the surrounding village of Laglio. With slopes full of vineyards and olive groves, and pastel-coloured villas, it's one of the most elegant lakeside locations. But don't take our word for it. If you’re not using your own boat, the ferry jetty is a three-minute walk from the villa, ready to whisk you to the lakeside delights of Bellagio or Varenna for the day. Or, stick around in the peaceful village of Sala Comacina, with its lakeside lido and handful of local restaurants.

The villa’s outdoor space is, quite simply, stunning. A panoramic view of the azure lake, flanked by rich green mountains is on offer from every lawn lounger, parasol-shaded dining table and covered veranda. Perhaps the best spot to take in the vista is from the comfort of the bubbling hot tub. 

Picture-frame windows inside mean you don’t miss out on Lake Como views in the bedrooms either. Glass French doors and a wall of windows open the opulent living room out to the covered veranda, blending indoors with outdoors. An old stone fireplace can keep the place cosy in the cooler months and a marble-style floor keeps things cool underfoot. In raw light-wood, the kitchen feels Scandi-chic and there’s plenty of room in here to cook and dine comfortably. We particularly love the wooden beams still on display in the huge master bedroom.
