We were sold on those views of Lake Maggiore alone – and that was before we'd even clapped eyes on the panoramic sunny terrace and newly refurbished interiors of this townhouse. As we're finickity, the downstairs living space feels a little bijou, but with that covered panoramic balcony outside, we don't think you'll mind. And kids will love the novelty of the top-floor mezzanine bedroom with a TV den to spill out into. Perched amidst the hillsides, 700 metres above the lake, you're quietly removed from the bustle. But when it's time to dip your toes into lakeside living, Stresa's grand promenades and history-rich streets bustling with trattorias are just a five-minute drive away.

Views of Northern Italy's peaceful Lake Maggiore don't come much better than this. It's a scene best admired from the private balcony of this smart townhouse perched on the hillsides overlooking the Borromeo's islands. Designed by a well-respected 20th-century architect, this two-storey home on the Sirmio peninsula plants you onto sprawling lands that stretch out to a beach on Lake Garda. With stunning balcony views accessible to all the bedrooms and spots for alfresco dining, the outdoor areas are a big draw here, but the inside is a treat too. We were especially fond of the atmospheric study and elegant living room, both ideal spots for nightcaps. And despite the seemingly secluded location, you're not far from eateries, cafes, and historical sites here – and you won't want to miss the chance to take a boat trip on the lake.

Wander the streets with a gelato, or call into cafes for coffee and watch the world go by – there’s no need to rush, you’re in Italy after all. The jewel in Padenghe’s crown is undoubtedly the castle; whether you’re a history buff or you’re just in it for the views of Garda, it’s well worth strolling five minutes up the hill to explore. Further afield, beautiful Sirmione is less than ten miles away. 

However you spend your stay, make sure you spend at least one evening on the terrace with a glass of something local, watching the sun set slowly over the lake. If you’re anything like us, you’d kick yourself for missing it.

Or head to Como Cathedral and Basilica di San Fedele – both are around five minutes on foot. There are a variety of cafés and restaurants for lunch on your doorstep, or head back to this elegant apartment.

The lakeside swimming pool is a five-minute walk away, along with the ferry stop ready to whisk you across Lake Como to the likes of Bellagio, Menaggio or Varenna. Now that's what we call a view. Located in the charming town of Nesso, this apartment offers breathtaking views of Lake Como. There's a sofa bed for a third guest, but we think it would be a better fit for two. This breathtaking former quarryman's cottage offers you the ultimate escape. It's only accessible from the water so you're free to get on with the important business of relaxing. Alternatively, take inspiration from its owner, renowned author and journalist Guiseppe Guin, and crack on with that book you've always had inside you, free from the noise and distractions of everyday life.

Inside, exposed stone walls lined with leather-bound books, an antique stove, and a kitchen carved from granite make the home feel like a place out of time. With its lakeside setting on a wooded hillside, there's definitely a 'Lord of the Rings' vibe about it.

You can walk to the centre of Tremezzo and the famous Villa Carlotta in only eight minutes from here, and you're also close to Scalo di Villa Carlotta ferry landing, which can take you around the lake to several points of interest. Plus, the city centre of Como is around a forty-minute drive away – visit the cathedral and wander along the promenade before you hop on the funicular railway for an excellent view.

Bedrooms are tucked beneath wooden ceilings across both floors and the added bonus is the steam room for sore muscles.

Set in a quiet residential area yet just a short stroll from Como's lakeside and the Duomo, the setting of these two apartments is spot-on. Ideal for two couples wanting to holiday together without overcrowding each other, each apartment is self-contained for a little extra privacy. While the balcony and terrace are a bonus, the living spaces are pocket-sized – especially if you use the sofa bed in the lounge. Don't expect to rustle up much more than breakfast or a light bite in the compact kitchenettes, either.
