You'll have private access to the sea on a small rocky platform, and the large terrace is shaded by century-old wisteria with space for alfresco dining. Some of the decor is a little dated and won't be to everyone's taste, but all the bedrooms have lovely sea views. Parking is limited, and although the sea is on your doorstep, it's worth noting that the nearest beach is best reached by public transport.

This home has a particularly impressive location. It's nestled within not one, but two UNESCO World Heritage sites – the Vineyard Landscape of Piedmont and the Sacred Mountains of Piedmont and Lombardy. And, with 17 hectares of land surrounding the house, and several rare white truffle trees, there's no denying this is a special spot. 

Much of the house dates back to the 19th century, with an even older Medieval section inside, and there's a sense of history in every corner. However, that's not to say that it's old-fashioned – the host has carefully selected a fresh colour scheme and provided plenty of modern conveniences to enjoy. Fire up the coffee machine and sip your morning espresso on the balcony, before grabbing your book and picking a sun lounger to catch some rays. When the temperature rises, simply slip into the swimming pool and float under the blue sky, or head for some shade under the portico. 

Walkers will be delighted with the range of hiking trails throughout this region, which guarantee incredible views of the luscious landscape. Wine lovers are also well catered for, with several nearby vineyards where you can try the local vintages. There are several charming villages within driving distance, and if you're visiting during the right time of year then you might have the chance to join one of the region's most unique traditions – a truffle hunt.

It will be hard to tear yourself away from the sea views at this hillside villa. Separated into the main villa and an annexe, this home used to be a traditional farmhouse and has been lovingly restored with modern amenities while retaining charming features like the exposed wooden beams, stone fireplace, and the original majolica tiles. The villa's gardens extend down the hillside, bordered by Mediterranean plants and herbs, ending in a swimming pool with views over the town. Relax in the shade of a tree with a book, before enjoying lunch on the outdoor terrace. Each of the bedrooms catches the Mediterranean light with their whitewashed walls, and one of the rooms even features an original fireplace. If you don't fancy trying the antique 'runfò Genovesi' (Genoese oven), the kitchen also features a gas cooker, oven, dishwasher, and fridge, and there's a barbecue for a good old-fashioned grill night. The home is divided into two individual apartments allowing for privacy whichever way you want to cut it. At dusk, when the winds whip up from the sea, step inside and snuggle by the fireplace and watch on as twinkling stars come out to play.

A beach lover's paradise, there are three to choose from in the nearby vicinity. We adored the convenience of stepping from the manicured lawn to the short six-minute walk to Bagni La Rotondo Beach. If you can drag yourself away from this nautical playground, then Genoa, the birthplace of Christopher Columbus, is a twelve-minute car ride away.

Well, the swimming pool will be the obvious choice during the warmer months, but there are plenty of equally pleasant spots out in the garden or under the pergola.

If the temperature ever takes a dip at any point, the table in the conservatory still gives you the opportunity to watch the world go by, while there's also an open-hearth fireplace to light up once the sun's gone down. This rather traditional source of warmth is in keeping with the home's rustic style, as seen with the exposed stonework and country-style kitchen.

Although you're more than welcome to never leave the address during your stay, the closest town, Vesime, takes five minutes to reach in the car and offers an outdoor swimming pool and a castle to explore. The city of Acqui Terme is half an hour's drive, too.

Anna spends most of her time living in Elysium, and as such the place has a real sense of vitality to it. It’s not minimalist – if that’s the vibe you’re after, or if the thought of other people’s things puts you off then this isn’t for you – but the feeling that you’re being genuinely welcomed into the home outweighs all of that. At least for us it does. You can also see the Arco della Pace from the balcony, which bears more than a passing resemblance to the Arc de Triomphe.

Everything about this home is geared towards lovers of minimalism. Your hosts employed an architect to ensure that nothing is present that needn't be, removing the distraction that excess creates to leave a clean and uncluttered space that's perfect for disconnecting and switching off. Any omissions in terms of amenities aren't oversights from the hosts. Instead, they’re considered decisions taken in partnership to maintain an aesthetic while creating a comfortable space that works for you – the guest. The hardwood floors, comfy sofa and blonde wood give the apartment a Scandinavian feel. Climbing the ladder up to the mezzanine floor adds a touch of adventure to bedtime that makes you feel like you could be in a cabin in the woods and not central Milan. Given the burgeoning bohemian scene in this part of Milan, that feeling couldn't be more appropriate. Just north of the city centre, Isola marches to the beat of its own drum. The neighbourhood is blessed with independent boutiques, colourful street art, and a community feel that's rare to find. The cherry on top is your proximity to Artico Gelateria – home to the finest all-natural, hand-turned ice cream in the city. We found it almost impossible not to stop every time we passed by – which was a lot.

A simple flat with an emphasis on clean lines, Echoes is a really good option for short stays in Milan. Over a longer period, the lack of washing machine might start to grate, but that’s really the only thing we can think of. It’s just off Corso Magenta, a main road that leads all the way in to the city centre, and there’s a metro station nearby as well, so getting further afield is simple.
