Much of the house dates back to the 19th century, with an even older Medieval section inside, and there's a sense of history in every corner. However, that's not to say that it's old-fashioned – the host has carefully selected a fresh colour scheme and provided plenty of modern conveniences to enjoy. Fire up the coffee machine and sip your morning espresso on the balcony, before grabbing your book and picking a sun lounger to catch some rays. When the temperature rises, simply slip into the swimming pool and float under the blue sky, or head for some shade under the portico. 

Walkers will be delighted with the range of hiking trails throughout this region, which guarantee incredible views of the luscious landscape. Wine lovers are also well catered for, with several nearby vineyards where you can try the local vintages. Although the home is dedicated to alfresco living, you'll find the interior just as pleasing – there are five bedrooms to choose from, each one decorated in a soothing palette of neutrals. The home is divided into two individual apartments allowing for privacy whichever way you want to cut it. At dusk, when the winds whip up from the sea, step inside and snuggle by the fireplace and watch on as twinkling stars come out to play.

A beach lover's paradise, there are three to choose from in the nearby vicinity. We adored the convenience of stepping from the manicured lawn to the short six-minute walk to Bagni La Rotondo Beach. If you can drag yourself away from this nautical playground, then Genoa, the birthplace of Christopher Columbus, is a twelve-minute car ride away.

Separated into the main villa and an annexe, this home used to be a traditional farmhouse and has been lovingly restored with modern amenities while retaining charming features like the exposed wooden beams, stone fireplace, and the original majolica tiles. The villa's gardens extend down the hillside, bordered by Mediterranean plants and herbs, ending in a swimming pool with views over the town. Relax in the shade of a tree with a book, before enjoying lunch on the outdoor terrace. The property is detached and sits on top of a hill, offering beautiful panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. Its private garden is well-maintained and features a wildlife garden, trees, courtyard, and a swimming pool (seasonal availability: May to October). The house has three levels and 10 rooms with comfortable furnishings, including an open kitchen, living/dining room with fireplace, four double bedrooms on the upper floor, and three double bedrooms on the top floor. Other amenities include air conditioning, gas heating, internet access, washing machine, dryer, children's high chair, and baby cot. There are so many good things about Sailor’s Solace that it’s hard to know where to start. We adore the living room, a place that feels down-to-earth and yet special at the same time – especially when it fills with sunlight. It’s hard not to flop into the hammock as soon as you see it, and even harder to peel yourself away. At this unique home, it's tempting just to stay in, passing the evening on the terrace with a Campari for company.

But when in Milan, there's much to see. And here, you’re close enough to most of the major attractions to walk (and if you weren’t, there’s a station nearby). Start with the medieval Sforzesco Castle, just a ten-minute walk away. The 15th-century structure sits on an expanse of beautifully-manicured gardens – there's even an aquarium, ideal if you're travelling with children. 

From here, wind your way towards the Duomo, stopping for a coffee and cannoli somewhere along the way. The cathedral is like nothing else you've ever seen, constructed from elegant pink marble. 

Sailor's Solace

Anna spends most of her time living in Elysium, and as such the place has a real sense of vitality to it. It’s not minimalist – if that’s the vibe you’re after, or if the thought of other people’s things puts you off then this isn’t for you – but the feeling that you’re being genuinely welcomed into the home outweighs all of that. At least for us it does. You can also see the Arco della Pace from the balcony, which bears more than a passing resemblance to the Arc de Triomphe.

Lift-Off isn’t the kind of place you stumble across every day. The windows and high ceilings make it feel vast (and to be fair, it is), and it could easily be in the Hollywood Hills, or somewhere along Highway 1. We’ll let the pictures do most of the talking, but suffice to say that indoor swings aren’t especially common. It’s a bit far out (to have that much space, you need to be), but a lot of events are hosted nearby during Salone del Mobile, and when the house itself is this much of a destination, location ceases to be a problem anyway.
