This seventeenth-century palace by Lake Orta delivers the ultimate five-star experience. It underwent a total refurbishment recently and while the original architecture has been restored, luxurious finishes and modern comforts have been introduced in all its spaces. Expect open fireplaces, coffered ceilings, incredible original art and designer furniture throughout. Every bedroom and its en-suite are of an equally high standard so all guests are guaranteed a memorable stay. Other highlights include the heated indoor pool and spa, the library and music room, and you can't possibly miss the wonderful views across the lake from the top floor. We were sold on those views of Lake Maggiore alone – and that was before we'd even clapped eyes on the panoramic sunny terrace and newly refurbished interiors of this townhouse. As we're finickity, the downstairs living space feels a little bijou, but with that covered panoramic balcony outside, we don't think you'll mind. And kids will love the novelty of the top-floor mezzanine bedroom with a TV den to spill out into. Perched amidst the hillsides, 700 metres above the lake, you're quietly removed from the bustle. But when it's time to dip your toes into lakeside living, Stresa's grand promenades and history-rich streets bustling with trattorias are just a five-minute drive away.

We love the vistas over Lake Como from this apartment’s Juliet balconies in the living room and bedroom. On a practical note, the living area can get a bit cramped if four guests stay, as two will be sleeping on a sofa bed here. Also, the kitchenette doesn’t have an oven or much food preparation space, so it’s best suited to making snacks and light meals. Luckily, there are a couple of eateries nearby. This home is situated in Carate Urio on the western shore of Lake Como, with lots of residential villas. If you fancy going on a boat trip to explore Lake Como’s other towns, take a ten-minute walk to Urio’s dock.

Once an ice house, the place has been transformed into a cosy apartment – we loved the mezzanine level with frosted glass floor and the comfy crescent sofa that complements the curves of the ancient walls. There’s a kitchenette for whipping up quick snacks, but if you’ve got a hankering for hearty Lombardy fare, you’re only footsteps from traditional osterie. 

Spend afternoons navigating Como’s narrow cobbled streets, nipping in and out of artisanal boutiques before finding a spot by the water with an aperitvo. If you’re keen to explore further afield, catch the ferry to Bellagio – it’ll take around forty-four minutes – and stroll around the peaceful Villa Melzi gardens.
