With tranquil views of the Apennine mountains from the garden’s shady seating area, we doubt you’ll even want to leave the grounds – but if you do, you’ll find Portofino, Pisa, and Florence all within driving distance. Unwind by the pool during the day and cosy up around the fire pit come evening, or curl up with a book in one of the bright living areas. If you find yourself a little too relaxed, you can always get the adrenaline pumping with nearby activities such as paragliding over the Cinque Terre, rock climbing at Via Ferrata, rafting and hiking. The home has been designed as a space to reconnect with nature, but fear not; there’s also wi-fi, a flat-screen TV and a wireless sound system to enjoy.

In the exclusive Portofino peninsula, this villa is a ten-minute walk from the harbour's designer shops and seafood restaurants. You'll have private access to the sea on a small rocky platform, and the large terrace is shaded by century-old wisteria with space for alfresco dining. Some of the decor is a little dated and won't be to everyone's taste, but all the bedrooms have lovely sea views. Parking is limited, and although the sea is on your doorstep, it's worth noting that the nearest beach is best reached by public transport.

Reside at this sumptuous family villa perched on the edge of the breathtaking Ligurian coast. 

Fire up the barbie and enjoy alfresco dinners on the patio or strike a pose on the lounger as the kids splash about in the salt-water swimming pool. We loved throwing open the French doors and drinking in the views of the glittering coastline.

Although the home is dedicated to alfresco living, you'll find the interior just as pleasing – there are five bedrooms to choose from, each one decorated in a soothing palette of neutrals. The home is divided into two individual apartments allowing for privacy whichever way you want to cut it. At dusk, when the winds whip up from the sea, step inside and snuggle by the fireplace and watch on as twinkling stars come out to play.

A beach lover's paradise, there are three to choose from in the nearby vicinity. We adored the convenience of stepping from the manicured lawn to the short six-minute walk to Bagni La Rotondo Beach. If you can drag yourself away from this nautical playground, then Genoa, the birthplace of Christopher Columbus, is a twelve-minute car ride away.

In the heart of Portovenere, this home's central location means you can drop your bags and stroll straight to the waterfront. Separated into the main villa and an annexe, this home used to be a traditional farmhouse and has been lovingly restored with modern amenities while retaining charming features like the exposed wooden beams, stone fireplace, and the original majolica tiles. The villa's gardens extend down the hillside, bordered by Mediterranean plants and herbs, ending in a swimming pool with views over the town. Relax in the shade of a tree with a book, before enjoying lunch on the outdoor terrace. Each of the bedrooms catches the Mediterranean light with their whitewashed walls, and one of the rooms even features an original fireplace. Over the Rolling Hills

This home has a particularly impressive location. It's nestled within not one, but two UNESCO World Heritage sites – the Vineyard Landscape of Piedmont and the Sacred Mountains of Piedmont and Lombardy. And, with 17 hectares of land surrounding the house, and several rare white truffle trees, there's no denying this is a special spot. 

Much of the house dates back to the 19th century, with an even older Medieval section inside, and there's a sense of history in every corner. However, that's not to say that it's old-fashioned – the host has carefully selected a fresh colour scheme and provided plenty of modern conveniences to enjoy. Fire up the coffee machine and sip your morning espresso on the balcony, before grabbing your book and picking a sun lounger to catch some rays. When the temperature rises, simply slip into the swimming pool and float under the blue sky, or head for some shade under the portico. 

Walkers will be delighted with the range of hiking trails throughout this region, which guarantee incredible views of the luscious landscape. Wine lovers are also well catered for, with several nearby vineyards where you can try the local vintages. There are several charming villages within driving distance, and if you're visiting during the right time of year then you might have the chance to join one of the region's most unique traditions – a truffle hunt.

The interior feels cooling thanks to the tiling underfoot and the large doorways that let a breeze circulate inside when opened. Although you're more than welcome to never leave the address during your stay, the closest town, Vesime, takes five minutes to reach in the car and offers an outdoor swimming pool and a castle to explore. The city of Acqui Terme is half an hour's drive, too.

Set in a peaceful spot, surrounded by olive groves, you’ll definitely feel like you’ve got away from it all here. A handful of shops and restaurants are a five-minute walk away and just outside the villa, a (very steep) path leads down to Punta Corvo's Beach. The colourful fishing villages of the Cinque Terre and within day-tripping distance too. In season, the private pool offers a place to cool off and you’ll find several outdoor lounges and dining spots in the shade around the quiet garden. Put the full kitchen through its paces by hiring a private chef. It’s a fairly higglety-pigglety layout, owing to the age of the building, and you’ll find three bedrooms in the main villa and a fourth bedroom in a separate garden apartment.

Fantastic views and spots to enjoy the Italian warmth abound in this two-storey villa in Liguria. The open-plan living space catches the sun, though we'd prefer to spend our time outside here – with the alfresco dining area in a high-up spot, you get stunning views of the local area as you gulp down Italian cocktails, and the large pool speaks for itself. With the hilly terrain and winding roads, a car is essential here – the closest supermarkets and restaurants are a 7km drive. Further afield, you can head to picturesque Cinque Terre or even cross over into nearby Tuscany.
