It's nestled within not one, but two UNESCO World Heritage sites – the Vineyard Landscape of Piedmont and the Sacred Mountains of Piedmont and Lombardy. And, with 17 hectares of land surrounding the house, and several rare white truffle trees, there's no denying this is a special spot. 

Much of the house dates back to the 19th century, with an even older Medieval section inside, and there's a sense of history in every corner. However, that's not to say that it's old-fashioned – the host has carefully selected a fresh colour scheme and provided plenty of modern conveniences to enjoy. Fire up the coffee machine and sip your morning espresso on the balcony, before grabbing your book and picking a sun lounger to catch some rays. When the temperature rises, simply slip into the swimming pool and float under the blue sky, or head for some shade under the portico.

While you won't find the ancient, gnarled beams of some of the vast chalets in this upscale French resort, its wood-clad walls pair perfectly with the mid-century-style furnishings and faux animal fur. The open layout provides a sociable sanctuary out of the elements. When the sun's shining, you're welcome to make the most of the spacious decking equipped with Acapulco chairs and a bubbling hot tub. Moreover, each of the three welcoming bedrooms offers its guests direct access to the deck, ideal for rushing back inside after a wintry dip in the water.

The apartment's location in Courchevel Moriond (formerly 1650) ensures easy access to some of the finest skiing in the French Alps, in the form of the titanic Les Trois Vallées. Meanwhile, the fact it's on the edge of this area means that the slopes are often quieter. After an adrenaline-fuelled day on the mountain, Moriond is known for its vibrant après-ski scene. In addition, it offers a variety of restaurants serving everything from homemade burgers to haute cuisine.

Ice Bear

With floor to ceiling windows wrapping around half of the living, dining, and kitchen space, this Courchevel cabin is nothing like what you’d expect from an ordinary ski lodge. High enough up that you can get a real appreciation for the sprawling slopes of the Courchevel mountain and the rest of the Les Trois Vallées, this particular cabin is less rustic homeliness and more luxurious comfort. The furniture  – carefully selected – is brought to life by decorative touches like the statement chandelier above the dining table. Right here, coincidentally, is where you can eat every meal, mesmerised by the beautiful views just beyond the pane of glass. 

Warm wood and soft lighting will welcome you home after a long day out on the slopes, located right next to the accommodations, and we encourage a long soak in the tub and freshly-brewed coffee as the ultimate tonic to stave off the chill the piste might have brought on. 

Head out for a slice at the pizzeria minutes away and when you return, warm milk on the stove for steaming cups of cocoa to accompany a family movie night. Play charades, read in companionable silence, and enjoy each other’s company before retiring for the night. 

We recommend watching at least one sunrise from the balcony – wake up before dawn to make a cup of coffee and stand out, wrapped up against the cold. And if mornings aren’t at all your thing, then settle for a glass of wine at sunset. 

Courchevel Cabin

The holy grail of ski accommodation? Managing to bag somewhere that’s as close to the slopes as possible. Because there’s nothing worse than lugging your skis and poles awkwardly on your shoulder while walking like John Wayne in painful ski boots on black ice. Which is why we know you’re going to love this home in the centre of Tignes. In good snow conditions (this is one of the Alps' most snow-sure resorts, so that’s basically all the time) you can ski in and out of this stylish apartment. There’s plenty of storage for your skis here too, so that means you can go from pain au raisin to powder in no time at all. And that’s not all. Inside, the design of this home has been immaculately thought-out. Wooden walls and ceilings keep things nice and warm, and the faux-fur rugs, throws and cushions really ramp up the cosy factor. The bedrooms are playfully set out, with cuddly toy heads mounted on the wall in the children’s room, and luxuriously soft furry blankets in the master bedroom. And after a tough day on the piste, we can’t think of anything better than admiring the glorious mountain views at sunset before tucking into a huge pile of melted cheese (raclette and fondue sets come as standard) in the fresh and modern kitchen with a large wooden table, leather bench and pastel-coloured metal chairs underneath low-slung industrial-style lamps. 

La Vie En Ski

You'll find that there's an innate tranquillity to this home in the middle of the Piedmont countryside. How best to enjoy this peace and quiet? Well, the swimming pool will be the obvious choice during the warmer months, but there are plenty of equally pleasant spots out in the garden or under the pergola.

If the temperature ever takes a dip at any point, the table in the conservatory still gives you the opportunity to watch the world go by, while there's also an open-hearth fireplace to light up once the sun's gone down. This rather traditional source of warmth is in keeping with the home's rustic style, as seen with the exposed stonework and country-style kitchen.

Although you're more than welcome to never leave the address during your stay, the closest town, Vesime, takes five minutes to reach in the car and offers an outdoor swimming pool and a castle to explore. The city of Acqui Terme is half an hour's drive, too.

The property is a stunning detached villa spread over two floors and overlooking the vineyards, ideally nestled in Italy's Piedmont countryside to allow for an idyllic retreat away from the crowds. Step inside to relax in the delightfully furnished interiors; on the ground floor, you can find an open-plan living room with velvet sofas inviting you to sink in and enjoy the company of your family or friends. The spacious kitchen boasts enough equipment for every aspiring chef, with a bar table, stools, and a dining table to allow big groups to gather for a home-cooked meal. All three suites – one on this level and two upstairs – exude elegance and taste, with king-size beds, walls adorned in art and wallpaper, plus en-suite bathrooms for extra privacy. The upstairs bedrooms also benefit from access to private terraces offering picturesque country views.

Step inside, and you'll find a welcoming space with wood-panelled walls and comfy furniture. You'll probably be ravenous after a day in the great outdoors, so you can whip up a tasty feast in the kitchen – or, book a private chef to do the hard work for you. There's even an outdoor terrace where you can breathe in the fresh mountain air and watch your kids playing in the snow. 

The office next door can organise ski hire and lift passes, so all you need to do is perfect your snowplough. You'll find some good local restaurants in the centre of Courchevel, just a short taxi ride away. And, if you're visiting during the warmer months, you can lace up your hiking boots or hop on your bike and hit the alpine trails to explore. 

Apple Brandy

Nestled away high up in the Alps, the mountain village of Flumet has long been the destination of choice for savvy skiers and those who worship the great outdoors. This apartment in the resort's centre might not be a photogenic chalet or the most luxurious of escapes, but it's a solid choice for anybody treating themselves to a visit to the locale.

The design is more contemporary than cosy, with walls painted in stylishly muted hues and the kitchen defined by clean lines and sleek surfaces. There's a Scandi influence in many of the furnishings, something also seen in the raw wooden finishes dotted about the interior. One thing that deserves a special mention is the private balcony, which has seating from which to take in the mountain scenery and even people-watch on the streets below if you so wish.

During the ski season, there are a wealth of routes to be discovered nearby and there's even a free shuttle bus that leaves from the centre of the village which will take you up to the foot of the slopes. It also helps that the home has lockers and boot dryers, too. If you're visiting during the warmer months, there's still lots to do – why not go swimming in Lake Flumet or rambling across the verdant hillsides instead?
