Each main bedroom is bright and spacious, and the mezzanine bedroom has its own sitting room, but if you’re packing this place to capacity, two people will be in a box room with no windows.

The kitchen is on the minimal side, so you’ll only be able to prepare simpler dishes – that said, you’ll want to maximise your time out sampling the local cuisine. And when you’re ready to explore, you’ve got Noto Cathedral, Baroque landmarks and gelaterias on your doorstep.

We know waking up early on holiday isn't always what you want to do, but we guarantee a stay in this 1900s townhouse will transform you into an early riser. Situated at a vantage point overlooking panoramic scenes of Modica, when you walk out onto the balcony and witness magnificent views of the light forming over the town, you'll be sure to feel energised for the day ahead. That's important as there's a lot to do and see in this stunning region of Sicily. 

Modica itself is a Unesco town with years of history to explore. Wander its wonderful streets and make sure to indulge in lots of chocolate here – the town has a 400-year tradition of Sicilian chocolate making. We recommend checking out the centrepiece of the town, the Duomo di San Giorgio, which is one of the most spectacular sights of Baroque architecture in Sicily. But if days walking around is too much, then why not spend a day at one of the fine beaches in this area? Sampieri is one of the most famous and it's only a twenty-eight-minute drive. No matter what you choose to do during the day, we guarantee you'll end up spending your evenings on this home's balcony watching the lights of Modica twinkle at night while sipping on a glass of something tasty. The living space has a more traditional feel, thanks to the wooden doors leading to the outside that let the fresh sea breeze in to wake you up in the morning. The outdoor area has to be the show stopper, where you can spend hours admiring the mountains and the turquoise sea from the comfort of the loungers, and enjoying a refreshing swim in the cool pool when the balmy heat gets too much.

Located in Cornino, a great starting point for discovering western Sicily. Prepare for a day of exploration and being awed by the beauty of nature with a forty-minute trip to The Zingaro Reserve – walk along the coastal path from Scopello to San Vito Lo Capo, where seven kilometres of diverse beauties await you. Your gaze will be drawn to the countless enchanting blue bays where the delicate hues of the silky white pebbles alternate with the roughness of the rock. The next day, take a thirty-minute drive to Trapani and relax on Mura di Tramontana beach before walking up the road along the sea wall to find a beautiful place for aperitivo, or continue towards the Ligni tower to meet a delightful tiny fishing village.

This architect-renovated home in the centre of Modica is a real find. Sitting behind gates, we were intrigued to see what lay behind. The house is constructed of warm local stone, which contrasts beautifully with the grey paintwork. There are multiple terraces, balconies and courtyards to enjoy – our favourite is the terrace with a lemon tree as its focal point – it's the perfect spot for an alfresco supper. Some of the rooms offer beautiful views of Modica, and there's an exercise room if you fancy clocking up some miles on the treadmill.

Or you could take a stroll around this stunning city with its Baroque buildings, like the Cathedral of St. George. There are restaurants and shops on your doorstep, or if you fancy a day at the beach, the golden sands of the Marina di Modica beach are 15 kilometres away.

On the edge of the Ionian coast, you’ll want to drop your bags and immediately head out to the terrace. The interior is just as eye-catching as its Sicilian surroundings – take your pick of two living rooms to unwind, fall asleep blissfully in the elegant bedrooms and wake up refreshed with the help of your rain shower (each en-suite has one). You’ll find multiple balconies to soak in the panoramas, though you’ll need to climb some stairs – a glass of Nero d’Avola at the top will make it all worth it. This lovely villa is located on the edge of the charming village of Savoca, just a few kilometres north of Taormina. The property boasts a stunning view over the surrounding landscape, Mount Etna and the Ionian Sea. The home is within easy reach of several seaside towns such as Santa Teresa di Riva and Sant'Alessio, as well as the impressive Alcantara Gorges.

This villa rests on a hillside, 600 metres from Cala Mazzo di Sciacca beach. If you want to explore traditional Sicilian cuisine and wine in the local bars, the seaside village of Scopello sits prettily nearby.  The home’s burnt-sienna facade is striking against a near-constant blue sky, and a terracotta roof and wooden shutters speak of old-world Sicily. A bamboo pergola keeps things cool in the outdoor lounge and, when the heat gets too much, there’s a plunge-style swimming pool to cool off. That said, when you’ve got your very own slice of the seaside in this home, it might be tempting to stay put.

Sitting right on the island’s coastline, your Martini isn’t the only thing on the rocks. This villa has its own private access path down to the shore. But if wild swimming isn’t your thing, you’ve also got a huge infinity pool on your terrace. You could spend the entire day floating here with a cocktail in hand, but other options include barbecues on the lush lawn or brunches on the patio.

From here, it’s just 30 metres to the nearest (small) beach, while Scogliera Bianca is just 200 metres away. You can also spend lazy days relaxing in the garden and swimming in the private pool. Inside, the rooms are simple, minimal and family-friendly with children’s amenities available on request. It’s worth noting most of the rooms are accessed from the outside. Plus, the first-floor apartment is accessed via external stairs and also includes a small kitchen – making this a great option for groups looking to stretch out and spend quality time together.

In addition to the history, you'll uncover a spectacular selection of lively bars, traditional restaurants and plenty of shops to pick up a holiday memento or two.

An hour or so south, the charming Baroque towns of Noto, Modica and Ragusa make for fascinating day trips. In addition, we'd recommend stepping back in time on a visit to the former fishing village of Marzamemi on Sicily's southern tip.
