We recommend checking out the centrepiece of the town, the Duomo di San Giorgio, which is one of the most spectacular sights of Baroque architecture in Sicily. But if days walking around is too much, then why not spend a day at one of the fine beaches in this area? Sampieri is one of the most famous and it's only a twenty-eight-minute drive. No matter what you choose to do during the day, we guarantee you'll end up spending your evenings on this home's balcony watching the lights of Modica twinkle at night while sipping on a glass of something tasty. A short stretch of rocky shoreline is all that separates you from the sea, making the lack of a swimming pool a non-issue, as you can simply take a few steps straight into the inviting azure sea when you want to cool off.

If you prefer to feel the sand between your toes, Spiaggia Fontane Bianche is just over a kilometre away. This popular spot offers fine golden sand and dazzling blue waters backed by a small selection of bars and restaurants, where you can dine on fresh Sicilian seafood as you look out over the ocean.

When you've had enough of topping up your tan for the day, why not drive the 16km to the historic city of Syracuse, known for its ancient ruins and the lovely island of Ortigia. In addition to the history, you'll uncover a spectacular selection of lively bars, traditional restaurants and plenty of shops to pick up a holiday memento or two.

An hour or so south, the charming Baroque towns of Noto, Modica and Ragusa make for fascinating day trips. In addition, we'd recommend stepping back in time on a visit to the former fishing village of Marzamemi on Sicily's southern tip.

We recommend visiting Isola Bella in particular. The apartment looks out over the sea and has a small terrace where you can enjoy the sunshine. Even when you’re inside, the sea views are the focal point thanks to huge windows. The decor inside is chic with a playful side, with charming trinkets dotted around. We think this home is perfect for a couple, a small family, or a trio of friends.

Inside, we love the old-world feel of the place with its sloped, wooden ceilings in the bedrooms and Persian rugs in the living room. Furniture feels like it belongs to a 19th-century aristocrat. There’s a big wood-burning stove in the dine-in kitchen, though we doubt you’ll need it in the heat of spring, autumn and summer. Located in the pretty coastal town of Marsala, this stylish villa is ideally situated for exploring all of the sandy beaches, ancient ruins and wineries of Sicily's west coast. Boasting a gorgeous garden, you couldn't ask for a better spot to soak up the Sicilian sunshine. Start your days with a refreshing swim in the private pool, then make yourself a coffee and enjoy the shade of the patio for a while. If you fancy a chill day at home, you have plenty of sun loungers, umbrellas and comfy sofas to relax on. 

We highly recommend you take some time to explore the local area, too. The centre of Marsala is full of great wine bars and restaurants, making it perfect for a bite to eat and a relaxing afternoon sampling some of the local produce. There are also some beautiful beaches here, meaning you have the best of both worlds on your doorstep. 

When you get home, it's time to get creative on the barbecue and try recreating some of your favourite Italian dishes. Dine alfresco beneath the pergola then unwind with a few games of table tennis in the garden.

Sip a limoncello as you relax on the pink-hued terrace, surrounded by plants, as the sun fades at this home in Syracuse. Later whip up some pasta con le sarde in the kitchen and enjoy it at your dining table. Afterwards, unwind on the yellow sofa or have a rest in the traditional bedroom before heading out to one of the nearby bars.

Located on the Ionian coast of Sicily, Syracuse is known for its ancient ruins. Head to the Archaeological Park Neapolis, which has a stunning Roman amphitheatre, a fifteen-minute ride away. It's around the same distance to the Museo Archeologico Regionale Paolo Orsi, or Cala Rossa Beach, with its golden sands and crystal clear waters, is just one minute on foot. Alternatively, take some photos of the Arethusa Spring, just a two-minute stroll from this home.

Donning the classic whites and blues of a beach house, this villa in San Lorenzo is a mere three minute stroll away from one of the most beautiful beaches in Sicily, but it has way more to offer than just that. The picture of modern comfort, this home encourages morning lie-ins and refreshing rain showers, first-sip-of-your-coffee moments and alfresco dining, but most importantly it forces the connection between human and nature with a very magnetising outdoor area. The moment you step out onto the patio and see the breathtaking, panoramic views of the Ionian Sea, you’ll not be able to comprehend how it can get any better, but just wait until you take the stairs up onto the sun terrace. From here, coincidentally, you can also hop in the jacuzzi, so our recommendation would be to do just that, with a glass of prosecco in hand, of course, so you watch the sun dip behind the horizon at dusk. 

With a few wineries in the surrounding area, why not go on a tour – you’ll get to each of them in ten minutes or less – and bring back a few of your favourites to enjoy with the Mediterranean feast you’ll prepare on the barbecue? Of course you’ll escape to the beach as often as possible, but the lively fishing village of Marzamemi is utterly charming and reachable by car in eight minutes.

Step inside, and you'll find a tranquil space that invites you to make yourself at home. It's the perfect place to relax and enjoy some respite from the heat – however, we think you'll want to spend most of your time outside in the sunshine. Fans of the seaside can take their pick from sandy beaches and hidden coves – we suggest Lido di Spinasanta, just a fifteen-minute drive away. The city of Noto is half an hour away by car, and makes a great day trip destination, thanks to its baroque architecture and delicious food. And, should you want to travel a little further afield, the ancient port city of Syracuse is only an hour's drive away.

Given its central location, you might want to pack earplugs – you’re in the thick of things here.
