We don’t think there’s a better way to experience the ancient feel of Modica than with a stay at a historic stone home dating back to the 1500s. This home delivers that, along with a few 21st-century touches to keep things feeling luxurious. It’s in the heart of the city, where the narrow streets are home to chi-chi coffee shops and family-run restaurants serving Sicilian cuisine. You’ve even got a view of the ancient church next door from the terraced garden.

Set over stone terraces and patios, the garden is filled with verdant plants and cacti, and feels like a little oasis in the centre of town. Seats and sofas are shaded by olive trees, and there’s dining for the group by strings of fairylights. Then there’s the circular stone hot tub, shimmering like a jewel. 

Inside, it feels like an ode to Sicilian tradition, with pristine white walls and minimalist furniture. The living room is adorned with modern art and has a selection of books for some downtime, and the kitchen is all sleek modernity despite being tucked behind an old stone archway. The old water cistern has been transformed into a wine cellar, with a high-end selection of local Sicilian bottles. Then there are the bedrooms, each with their own old-world character like the traditional circular bed in the master and fireplace in the second.

This stunning apartment makes for a dreamy setting for holidays with family or friends. It overlooks the sea from a privileged spot on the island of Ortigia. There are two large terraces so you’ll find every opportunity to admire those sea views, and there are plenty of tall windows inside to showcase them too. We love how much room there is here, with a variety of seating areas so you can gather together or enjoy a quiet moment by yourself. Every bedroom has a private bathroom, making this an excellent base for a stress-free stay, even with a large group.

Nestled in the heart of Ortigia, this home is an ideal base for a family or group of friends. With three bedrooms boasting en-suites, everyone can enjoy their privacy here, but the star of the show is the private terrace. With views across Sicilian rooftops, this sun-drenched space is perfect for alfresco meals or simply relaxing with a good book. Fancy a spot of sightseeing? Within easy reach, you’ll find the Temple of Apollo and Forte San Giovannello – just the spot to watch the sunrise – while Ortigia’s nearby market is a must-visit for some local produce to sample at home.

It’s also just 10 metres from a sandy beach. This home has a private terrace where you can soak up the sun and drink in the wonderful sea views. The view stretches to the island of Maddalena up to Plemmirio. We love the elegant decor in this well-equipped, comfortable home.

Nestled high up on the hills overlooking the sea, this villa offers guests stunning views and comfy outdoor spaces, complete with an infinity pool and alfresco dining areas. A short drive away from Taormina and the beaches, the home makes for a good base for families or groups of friends on the lookout for a Catania escape. Bear in mind that there are quite a few steps to climb inside, some of which are steep, so children will need to be supervised at all times. The proximity of a busy road also means that some street noise is to be expected here.

This architect-renovated home in the centre of Modica is a real find. Sitting behind gates, we were intrigued to see what lay behind. The house is constructed of warm local stone, which contrasts beautifully with the grey paintwork. There are multiple terraces, balconies and courtyards to enjoy – our favourite is the terrace with a lemon tree as its focal point – it's the perfect spot for an alfresco supper. Some of the rooms offer beautiful views of Modica, and there's an exercise room if you fancy clocking up some miles on the treadmill.

Or you could take a stroll around this stunning city with its Baroque buildings, like the Cathedral of St. George. There are restaurants and shops on your doorstep, or if you fancy a day at the beach, the golden sands of the Marina di Modica beach are 15 kilometres away.

For two guests staying in this contemporary villa, there’s ample space on the ground floor to meet your needs, with the first floor closed off unless you’re travelling as a larger party. For days away from the beach, the villa is situated close to shops, bars, and restaurants and is within driving distance of Syracuse, Taormina, Mount Etna, and several nature reserves.

Surrounded by farmland and olive trees in the UNESCO World Heritage-listed region of Val di Noto, this nineteenth-century villa is as Sicilian as it comes. The honey-coloured stone building is a thing of beauty and is full of pleasant surprises, from terraces with sumptuous views and pretty coloured tiles in the bathroom to a traditional fireplace. Many of the walls are painted a cooling shade of white and there's also a pair of minimalist four-poster beds to squabble over. Outside is where you'll find the real showstopper, though — a temptingly blue swimming pool surrounded by a stone wall, loungers and a pagoda for escaping the sunshine. Keep wandering around the grounds and you'll come across a vegetable garden, aromatic plants and a cute courtyard ideal for long lunches. When you're in the mood for days out, the historic town of Ragusa lies twenty-five minutes away in the car, while it's possible to get to the beach at Marina di Ragusa in under twenty. Your host can also arrange weddings for up to eighty people upon request in the ancient warehouse or Mediterranean garden facing the olive orchard.

From the outside, this place is utterly idyllic. With its picture–perfect backdrop of native saplings and gravel driveway, there’s also a small dining table for two, serving up a serene spot to sip on your creamy, morning coffee. To put it simply, this place is a sight for sore eyes, but when you cast a glimpse at the crystalline private pool, that’s the moment you’ll fall in love.

Surrounded by cushioned sun loungers and yet another dining spot, when temperatures soar, make a beeline for its refreshing depths for an instant cool–down. A few lengths later, you might just have worked up an appetite – in which case, the fully–equipped kitchen has got you covered.

As the old saying goes, the kitchen is the heart of the home, and in this case, it really does feel that way. Illuminated by a soft, soothing palette, this space is light, bright and breezy with occasional pops of green, paying homage to the home’s luscious surroundings. There’s a dining table in here, too, but we’d bet our bottom dollar you’ll eat al fresco almost every single time. With large doors leading right out onto the terrace, you can quickly whip up a bite to eat before making your way outside to dine beneath a blanket of sunlight.
