We don’t think there’s a better way to experience the ancient feel of Modica than with a stay at a historic stone home dating back to the 1500s. This home delivers that, along with a few 21st-century touches to keep things feeling luxurious. This apartment can be found in the popular seaside resort of Letojanni in Sicily. It’s just a few kilometres from Taormina, so there’s plenty to see and do. We recommend visiting Isola Bella in particular. The apartment looks out over the sea and has a small terrace where you can enjoy the sunshine. Even when you’re inside, the sea views are the focal point thanks to huge windows. The decor inside is chic with a playful side, with charming trinkets dotted around. We think this home is perfect for a couple, a small family, or a trio of friends.

When you've had enough of topping up your tan for the day, why not drive the 16km to the historic city of Syracuse, known for its ancient ruins and the lovely island of Ortigia. In addition to the history, you'll uncover a spectacular selection of lively bars, traditional restaurants and plenty of shops to pick up a holiday memento or two.

An hour or so south, the charming Baroque towns of Noto, Modica and Ragusa make for fascinating day trips. In addition, we'd recommend stepping back in time on a visit to the former fishing village of Marzamemi on Sicily's southern tip.

Modica itself is a Unesco town with years of history to explore. We recommend checking out the centrepiece of the town, the Duomo di San Giorgio, which is one of the most spectacular sights of Baroque architecture in Sicily. But if days walking around is too much, then why not spend a day at one of the fine beaches in this area? Sampieri is one of the most famous and it's only a twenty-eight-minute drive. This luxurious villa is a stunning base in east Sicily. It’s just above the seaside town of Letojanni and is close to Taormina, with beaches nearby. The villa boasts truly glorious views over the Ionian Sea and Taormina, which can be admired from inside as well as outside, thanks to floor-to-ceiling sliding French doors. Inside, the decor is crisp and clean, and you’ll find everything you need to enjoy a comfortable, relaxing stay. There’s even a gym and a sauna. Outside, the infinity pool is the main focus – aside from the views. The pool has a hydromassage area, and there’s a separate Jacuzzi. We love the alfresco dining area – there’s a barbecue to cook on too.

But if wild swimming isn’t your thing, you’ve also got a huge infinity pool on your terrace. You’ll be drawn to the water in no time here – and you’re in luck, Cala Rossa beach is a mere 50-metre stroll away.

The beach is located directly opposite the home’s main entrance and the surrounding area offers plenty of local shops and restaurants. At full capacity you may feel a tad squeezed here – we think that the place is best suited for a couple. Bear in mind that the pad is situated on the third floor with no lift.
