Despite a small footprint, Saguaro makes great use of the space it has. The mezzanine creates a feeling of openness while the colours brighten the place. We also really liked Iacopo, who we found really patient and helpful (even for a Plum host). The area is an interesting one, and depending on your point of view, could be considered a downside, as it’s a bit out of many of the main tourist hotspots. It is, however, an opportunity to experience Rome as a Roman would, free from the crowds and vendors.

Rome is a great city for spotting frescoes, but these mainly date back hundreds — if not thousands — of years. This apartment in the San Saba neighbourhood of the city shows that the tradition is far from long-dead. In the living room and many of the bedrooms, a modern variation on the wall paintings can be seen, adding colour and a sense of grandiosity to the interior.

Elsewhere, the design is wonderfully contemporary, particularly the curvy white dining chairs, sleek burgundy kitchen and equally pristine bathrooms. Another standout feature has to be the large private terrace, which has plenty of seating on which to enjoy the peace and quiet of this residential neighbourhood.

When you're in the mood for sightseeing, possibly the most famous fresco in the world — Michaelangelo's ceiling in the Sistine Chapel — takes just under twenty minutes to reach by taxi, but there are other notable attractions a bit closer, too. The Baths of Caracalla are ten minutes away on foot and the Colosseum takes about double that time.

This retro-chic apartment of offers a slightly different experience from many of our other homes in Rome. Rather than the bustle of the tourist centre, you’ll be in the leafy, twentieth-century streets of Monteverde Vecchio where traditional pasta restaurants and pubs serving artisan beer sit alongside weekly markets and antique shops. 
 
It’s a fitting locale for this historic apartment, as the host’s family have lived here since 1927, and some of the elegant furnishings, portraits, and other artworks decking the apartment’s walls go back further still. We love the antique camera that creates a memorable welcome, as well as the blue kitchen that provides the main sociable hub here. Gather together for breakfasts of fresh coffee and locally bought pastries at the table, or better yet, step put onto the private terrace for a sunny start to the day. This is also the ideal spot to treat yourself to a glass of Italian red before sampling the local trattorias, while the bedrooms wait to drift you off into a peaceful night’s sleep after a busy day of fun and sightseeing. 
 
Speaking of exploring, head to the  Porta Portese market in Trastevere on Sundays to experience Rome’s oldest flea market (a twenty-five-minute walk) and enjoy a stroll along the Tiber River, eighteen minutes away on foot. You’re also a thirteen-minute walk from Villa Sciarra, while the famous Mouth of Truth is forty minutes on foot from your door.

This apartment in the Testaccio neighbourhood of Rome is a shining example of a somewhere we'd be more than happy to stay in the Italian capital. Quite literally in the case of the gleaming chequerboard tiling, parquet-style flooring and black marble in the master bathroom, which reflect the light beautifully and make this home feel gloriously light. The open-concept kitchen-dining area feels geared towards shared mealtimes, which is only appropriate given the locale's reputation as a gastronomic hotspot. Stroll over to Testaccio's glass-roofed market in under ten minutes and pick up some fresh ingredients for a home-prepared feast. Alternatively, if you're feeling lazy — or intrepid, however you want to frame it — there are a wide choice of restaurants nearby from which to take your pick.

You’ll find this modern apartment through an archway of a historic building which shelters a shared courtyard garden. The living room has a homely feel and there are views across the River Tiber. This apartment in Trastevere is ideal for those keen to drop off their bags and head out into the city to explore. Sure, at full occupancy two people will have to take the sofa bed in the living room, but it won’t be at any real expense of lounge space. The terrace is an added bonus here, just the spot for an evening glass of limoncello – it is slightly overlooked by neighbouring homes, but that’s unlikely to worry you as the Italian sun warms your skin.

A balcony with views over the neighbourhood awaits at this home. Or, unwind inside and relax in the large and colourful living room. We should mention that guests three and four will be sleeping in the lounge on a sofa bed. The kitchen is quite compact, but it has been well-designed and has everything you need to cook some Italian cuisine. Location-wise, the neighbourhood allows you to live like a local, while a lot of Rome’s key landmarks are a metro ride away – the transport links here are excellent.

There are 'holiday homes' and holiday 'homes' – while the first functions as little more than a bed for the night, the second offers you a chance to experience a more authentic, everyday experience in your destination of choice. This cosy, city-centre apartment definitely falls into the latter category, and it's all the better for it. Of course, there are places you could stay closer to the most famous tourist sights, but here you have the chance to get stuck into real Roman life. Testaccio is the historic home of Rome's slaughterhouses. Once upon a time, its distinctive offal-based cuisine was served out of necessity. Nowadays, it has been elevated to a gourmet delicacy. For lunch, walk ten minutes to Trentatre, a chic cafeteria-style restaurant that serves up wholesome, seasonal dishes at incredibly competitive prices. For food on the go, pick up a trapizzino – a pizza pocket stuffed with sweetmeats. Alternatively, grab a seat at Checchino Dal 1887. Nowhere better represents the area than this six-generation family-owned and operated eatery. If the local cuisine inspires you, it’s easy to imagine yourself swanning through the local food markets and chatting to the vendors before whipping up dinner in the flat. With its innovative trattorias and cool craft breweries, a short five-minute walk to trendy Trastevere offers an entirely different atmosphere. And if you do need to get to the centre, it’s just a few stops on the metro.

Unpretentious and reassuring, Shoreline is comfortable, and the kind of place where things work without any fuss. It’s on the lower ground floor, so views are out of the question, but while it’s not overly bright, it’s not really any different to any number of the old flats in narrow streets closer to the centre of the city. However, as it’s in Monteverde, the streets are wide and lined with trees, the traffic much calmer, and the tourists far away.

Rome is often thought of in terms of narrow, winding alleyways and hidden passages. However, the grand scale of this home flies in the face of that perceived wisdom. It occupies two whole floors of an imposing villa (there's also a separate flat that you can add into the mix) in the residential district of Monteverde, an affluent area a little detached from the tourist crowds. While the house is undoubtedly impressive, it feels like a well-loved family home rather than a museum showpiece, which lends it a relaxed atmosphere that we loved. If you want to go in search of the action, you're around a twenty-minute walk from trendy Trastevere. This pretty pocket of Medieval Rome is packed with neighbourhood trattorias serving impeccable food, stylish speakeasies with intriguing cocktail menus, and all manner of vintage and antique boutiques where you can lose a couple of hours.

Full of colour, this penthouse is a stylish base for a Roman holiday. It’s in the lively district of Trastevere, a bohemian part of Rome known for its wealth of trattorias, bars, and artisan shops. Sights including the Roman Forum and the Colosseum are just across the river, a cab ride away. The modern apartment has all the amenities you’ll need for a city break, including a convenient kitchen and a workspace. Best of all, you’ll have a terrace to unwind on. It’s worth noting that the bed in bedroom two is raised and only accessible via a ladder – it won’t be suitable for everyone.

Whether you're seeking relaxation or a Roman adventure, this apartment offers an ideal base.

A standout highlight of this charming studio, formerly the penthouse of the 1920's villa, has to be the large and sunny terrace (with a view to boot). It's a rare find in the busy metropolis that is Rome. There are sun loungers for taking in a few early morning rays, and a dining table that’s perfect for coming together with some nibbles and aperitifs as the sun drops over the rooftops of Monteverde Vecchio’s leafy residential streets. Stepping inside, you’ll find a bright and airy space thanks to the high ceilings reaching up into the eaves. And whilst this is studio living, it’s wonderfully well-kept, with everything you need in the compact, cleverly designed separate kitchen. Not that you’ll be doing much cooking with so many authentic Italian coffee shops and restaurants on your doorstep. And when the ancient ruins and vibrant street life of downtown Rome finally lure you, do like the locals and hop on the tram located just a five minutes walk away - you’ll be in the thick of things in just fifteen minutes.

Situated in the Trastevere district, this modern apartment has access to some fantastic communal amenities. There’s a gym, rooftop terraces to enjoy with views over the city and a co-working space, making this place ideal for both leisure and business travellers. The apartment itself also has a private balcony reached from the open-plan living room (this space sleeps two guests on a sofa bed at full capacity). There's also another small balcony off the bedroom. The public transport links here are great, too, so reaching Rome’s key attractions is easy and you’ll find a variety of trattorias, bars and independent shops in the area.

The feeling of a family home is hard to replicate on holiday, almost by definition. Even a place that has the right sleeping arrangements usually seems to be lacking something unquantifiable. As soon as we arrived at Fuchsia, we felt its inner warmth (and not just from the crackling stove). It’s quirky and individual – a far cry from more hotel-like apartments – but this sense of fun is never forced.

Live like a Roman at this traditional apartment in the centuries-old Testaccio neighbourhood, sitting right on the pretty piazza. Surround yourself with history and culture, and be just a short stroll from the Circus Maximus, the Jewish Ghetto and the district of Trastevere. You'll find plenty of friendly bars and authentic restaurants nearby, as well as a village-like atmosphere running through the cobbled streets. And, after a day of sightseeing, return to your standing balcony for a refreshing drink as you perch and watch the locals go about their evening below. Although the apartment lacks a proper living area, we reckon you'll be too busy exploring the area to mind that much.

This apartment is situated within walking distance of the Vatican, as well as Trastevere with its trattorias, craft beer pubs and artisan shops. For many of Rome’s other attractions, you’ll need to get a cab or make use of this location’s excellent public transport links. The apartment itself has a modern kitchen with a dining table and while there’s no proper lounge to speak of, there’s a seating area with two armchairs. This place is ideal for business professionals, friends, and families looking to experience life in central Rome.

Those visiting Rome for the ancient marvels and historic sights won't find a location much better than this. It’s 100 metres from the Colosseum and the ruin-filled park of Colle Opio is your next-door neighbour. Wandering the surrounding streets it seems like every corner is home to an ancient church between family-run trattoria and gelaterias. The apartment is housed in a beautiful 18th-century building, and stepping inside you feel the opulence of an old-world parlour. Velvet seats at the bistro table, a velvet sofa piled high with cushions and suspended candelabra create the opulence, while the exposed stone and timber beams keep one foot firmly in the building’s history. Chess can provide the evening’s entertainment, which feels fitting amidst the gilded mirrors and oil paintings. Heading up the striking mesh-metal staircase, the master bedroom has a pretty arched window with a window seat providing the perfect spot for a bit of holiday reading. 

I Am Spartacus

Despite its position in an old, atmospheric square near Campo de’ Fiori, Falconry has been renovated recently, and most of the furniture has been made to measure, making the whole place feel very well crafted. Everything fits together, from the parquet floor to the various lamps, and even the terrace is taken care of, and not an afterthought. High up among the rooftops, it feels like a little refuge from the hectic city below.

Finding a street close to it all but not inundated with tourists is the holy grail in Rome – and that's precisely where you'll find this apartment. We call it the Goldilocks zone. But, ever the professional, your host Michele hasn’t used that as an excuse to rest on his laurels. The flat itself is in perfect condition, and while it doesn’t have the feeling of a family home, that’s often a good thing when it's not a sprawling home with space for all the host's personal items. The two bedrooms are on opposite sides of the flat, which is perfect for groups of friends travelling together, though families might want little ones closer by, or not. We understand. Sandwiched between the river and lively Campo de' Fiori, you're in a prime location to explore the city. The square is home to the city's most vibrant (and occasionally overpriced) street market (Monday-Saturday mornings). Still, this famous foodie haven is a good place to stock up on fresh produce, just a five-minute walk from your apartment. Cross over the stone footbridge, Ponte Sisto, and within a couple of minutes, you'll be immersed in trendy Trastevere. With its cobbled streets lined with charmingly faded facades, innovative trattorias, and craft cocktail bars, there's plenty to keep you occupied well into the night.

Perched along a quiet, ancient street in the atmospheric Navona district, and with all of the city’s must-see sights reachable on foot, the location of this immaculately presented apartment is hard to beat. Get off to a flying start just around the corner at Piazza Navona (three minutes on foot) –⁠ one of the city’s most famous squares and 'the spot' for an evening aperitivo. And when thoughts turn to food, you’re spoilt for choice here –⁠ with bustling coffee bars, authentic trattorias, and high-end restaurants all just a short jaunt from your door. Back at home, this apartment makes quite a first impression with its grand, period exterior and a spiraling internal staircase leading to your door. The décor pairs contemporary furnishings alongside period features, including exposed original brickwork and timber-clad ceilings of high and mighty proportions. And despite its prime central location, our guests love how quiet this home feels –⁠ particularly in the bedrooms, which overlook a peaceful internal courtyard. So you’ll be sure to bank a peaceful night’s sleep here, ready for another adventure in the Eternal City.

With heaps of Italian soul and rustic charm, this quiet, well-kept and beautifully appointed apartment offers everything needed for that dolce vita. For the location, you're surrounded by local authenticity and just a seven-minute walk to the emblematic Colosseum. Find an assortment of eateries, wine bars and classy cafés to enjoy an alfresco lunch in the sun, before working off any over-indulgences with a gentle fourteen-minute stroll to Trevi Fountain – pennies at the ready. We also have to mention the apartment being on the cusp of Monti and Campitelli – both are full of beautiful piazzas, windy backstreets and family-run trattorias. Back home, we think there's somewhat of a contemporary Scandi feel, with plain bedspreads, pared-back furnishings and white shelved walls. Modern and minimalist, you'll also notice the elegant marble floors, quirky wallpaper prints and low-hanging light bulbs that we really loved.

Finding somewhere that can comfortably sleep eight (and ten, at a stretch) in the Jewish Quarter isn’t as straightforward as you might think. Finding somewhere that can comfortably sleep eight and has a view as good as Teatro’s is even harder. It looks down onto the Largo di Torre Argentina, which holds the ruins of four temples and Pompey’s Theatre. It’s a fantastic spot, and Teatro makes the most of it, with a simple design intended to not interfere.

Deep within the narrow, medieval streets of Rome, this period building hides a surprisingly modern apartment for up to five guests. It's not a huge space but it's been cleverly configured to make the most of what it has – and to make it feel comfortable and high-end at the same time. Decorated in on-trend whites, creams and greys, it's bright and fresh. The kitchenette is stowed away in a cupboard-like space in the living room and while it's perfect for the basics, it's not going to appeal to keen home cooks – but this is Rome, and some of the best restaurants, cafes and bars in the world are right on your doorstep. Our favourite feature of this home is the view onto the charming Piazza dei Satiri outside. And while we're talking location, the famous Campo de’ Fiori market is just around the corner.

Discover hidden Rome with this stylish apartment in vibrant Trastevere. It’s just over a five-minute stroll to a wide variety of eateries, while history lovers can visit Piazza di Santa Maria with its 12th-century basilica. If you want to check out some of Rome’s main attractions, the Trevi Fountain and Colosseum are around a half an hour walk or fifteen-minute ride away. Back at this stylish home, there’s traditional character aplenty with its stunning brickwork ceilings, tiled floors and a magnificent chandelier, which combine wonderfully with modern architectural features such as the bespoke metal screen. Enjoy some local Italian produce of bread, cheeses and prosciutto at the dining table or relax in the jacuzzi with its chromotherapy – it’s perfect for soothing any aches after all that sightseeing.

Known as one of the most picturesque neighbourhoods in Rome, Trastevere is overflowing with trendy bars, mouth-watering restaurants,  and artisan shops. Vibrant, bohemian and steeped in authenticity, this is the place to be if you want to live like a local, and it's where you'll find this studio apartment. It's about a twenty-minute walk to the Pantheon, and though other landmarks like the Trevi Fountain and the Colosseum are around a half-an-hour away, this excellent location is well worth it. Spend afternoons roaming the pretty-as-a-postcard alleyways and people-watching in the piazzas, then grab an alfresco aperitif in the evenings at one of the world-class trattorias. After a busy day, come home to this snug apartment and relax in style. It has plenty of details that set it apart from the crowd, from the bold wallpaper to the ceramic leopard that greets you as you enter. The wooden beams and large windows hark back to Trastevere's history, and though it may be small, it feels like a cosy home-from-home, perfect for a couple wanting a romantic getaway in the heart of Rome.

You'll be impressed with the views of the Santa Barbara dei Librari seen from the windows of this newly renovated apartment. But you'll love this home's location even more. Set in the heart of the historic district, overlooking the atmospheric square Largo dei library, all the must-see sights are walkable from here.

Get off to a flying start with a hefty dose of Roman life around the corner at Campo de Fiori (a three-minute walk) –⁠ by day, the piazza hosts one of the city's best-known markets, and by night, its bars and restaurants keep the night flowing. Or do like the locals with early-evening passeggiatas along the postcard-pretty River Tiber, it's just a four-minute walk from your door.

Back at home, this modern apartment housed in an ancient Roman villa of mighty proportions makes quite the first impression with its floor-to-ceiling windows flooding the space with natural daylight and revealing charming scenes of the pretty piazza below.

The designers have cleverly used the height of those lofty, exposed beam ceilings to create a nifty mezzanine level that houses the second bedroom. Meanwhile, strategically-placed house plants and contemporary artwork warm the loft-style space. When thoughts turn to food, you can easily rustle up a  bite to eat in the smart kitchen area. Though with so many trattorias waiting right outside your door, we wouldn't blame you if you ate out every day instead.

The Duchess is a comfortable place with lots going for it, but we’d be remiss if we didn’t start with that view. A city like Rome is full of views, but even so, this one is special, and the terrace itself is beautiful, with the furniture, the awning and the flowers all around (in summer, at least). This, along with the various antiques inside, makes you feel as if you’re in a Rome that existed 200 years ago, one that’s since been lost.

With its exposed beam ceilings, wood floors and large windows, this colourful home just outside the Vatican seamlessly blends rustic charm with modern comforts. The living room is a laid-back affair with large plump sofas to lounge on while reading a book from the open shelves or admiring the eye-catching art that pops in rainbow hues against the white walls. We love the bright dining area where a glass table sits beneath the chandelier, and the open kitchen that makes socialising a breeze. The bedroom here is simple yet elegant, with an en suite boasting a rainfall shower with views of the courtyard and a bathtub with chromotherapy lights to ramp up your soak's serenity. With St. Peter’s Square just a five-minute walk away, you’ve got culture and history right on your doorstep. That said, with your host able to arrange at-home massages, private chefs, restaurant reservations and tickets to the city’s top events, your home gives you a slice of heaven without ever needing to step out the front door.

This apartment may be in the heart of Rome, but there’s something distinctly country-chic about the decor. Period pieces – dressers, doors and the kitchen table – are all rough white-washed and feel rustic.
