We're completely infatuated with this home's rustic charm. It's set across two pastel-hued and ivy-clad villas, making it the perfect base for families and large groups. This charming apartment is located in perfect tranquillity inside a converted ancient palace, where the environment has been impeccably refurbished whilst respecting the original structure. We love how much greenery surrounds this home, and how it can make you appreciate the simple things in life as you take a long walk through the flora, breathing in the fresh air and listening to the bird's chirp. The wooden beams definitely give this home the character it deserves, as do the shutters that can be opened to let in light as you gaze out over the trees of an ancient noble villa.
 
When you want to be a part of the city's hustle and bustle, take the sixteen-minute drive to Lucca and bike along the city walls, losing yourself in the history of what would've been, before indulging in some retail therapy in the Old Town. Admire Piazza dell'Anfiteatro, a magnificent square constructed on the ruins of the ancient Roman amphitheatre that spreads a mix of historical beauty and true Italian flavour – stop for a bite to eat in the courtyard with innumerable cafes and restaurants.

We love the romantic bedrooms and the delightful covered terrace – perfect for barbecues after a day on the beach.

Located on a small family-run farm in Montespertoli, nestled in the gently rolling hills of Chianti, is this ‘Forno’ brick-style Italian home. Start your first evening here with the bottle of wine from your welcome basket which has been produced on the vineyard here, as you enjoy the incredible views from your private garden. Then, when you wake the next day, start your morning with a sugary sweet coffee – also provided in your welcome basket – before you relax in a deck chair with a good book. 

For those who love walking or cycling, this beautiful setting provides the perfect area for exploring, as the farm is surrounded by vineyards, olive groves and woodlands that you can wander freely. In the early evening, we would love to stop at the shaded terrace overlooking the large gardens to taste the farm’s wines, while admiring the view of the surrounding hills. 

Then for dinner, why not take advantage of the barbecue, and cook some delicious Spiedini skewers, to enjoy in Italian alfresco style with a glass of refreshing wine, accompanied by the fantastic vista on offer. When you retire inside, the home’s natural elements of stone walls, terracotta floors and wooden ceilings will keep the rooms pleasantly cool in the summer and warm in the winters, while the twentieth-century furnishings provide comfort for relaxing hours before bedtime.

A sixteenth-century villa in the hilly outskirts of Florence that, at times, has been both a stables and a nightclub, Thermae is one of the most spectacular places we’ve seen in Italy. Its restoration has been a labour of love for the host, Giovanni, and the way that he’s incorporated technology into the original structure is simply impressive. There’s too much to describe here, but know that everything's been taken care of. And if we did have to choose one thing that stood out, it might have to be the pool, hidden away in the vaults, and only accessible through a trapdoor.


Thermae

For a taste of authentic Tuscan living, this holiday home is a great choice. This apartment is one of six, renovated from a 15th-century structure by a historically conscious architect. The result of the renovation is an apartment that boasts classic Tuscan design with modern amenities and comfort – you can dine beneath wooden beams and stay cool thanks to the terracotta tiles. 

Outside, a pretty patio boasts a wood-fired pizza oven and alfresco seating. After a day spent in the sunshine, it’s delightful to sit in the shade of the trees and sip local wine while the aroma of pizza fills the air. 

This is a restful home on the outskirts of the village of Brenna, which is just five minutes away on foot. If you need to cool down, you might stroll five minutes to Stazione Balneare Merse where you can swim from the river beach. Of course, the apartment is also in a great location for exploring Tuscany, whether you fancy touring the vineyards or seeing the galleries and museums of the cities. It takes twenty minutes to drive to Siena, making it a perfect day trip. 


A Rustic Reverie

And, with close access to the motorway, you can easily drive to Orvieto, Terni, or even further afield to Florence and Rome for a day trip. Nature lovers will also be happy here – cycle, hike or horse-ride through the beautiful rolling landscapes, stopping off at the tiny hilltop villages along the way. 

Shades of Green

This charming apartment is in the old town of Colle di Val d'Elsa, a typically medieval region of Tuscany famous for crystal glass production. It’s a ten-minute stroll into the centre where you’ll find restaurants, cafés and archaeological museums beyond the ancient town walls. Further afield, the city of Siena is a half-hour drive away, ideal for a day trip.

The apartment itself is housed in a striking 16th-century building just outside the bridge that leads to il Castello. Wood beams on display hark back to the building’s roots, but the decor is decidedly modern. Vibrant modern art is displayed above the plush, L-shaped sofa and the kitchen is a sleek space of white cabinets. The best bit is the view from French-style windows, which shows off golden fields and hills, even though you’re a short walk from the town centre.

Beyond the Bridge

Whether you're after a peaceful holiday with friends or a spacious spot for a family gathering, this restored farmhouse is an excellent choice. It's situated on a private country estate in the charming village of Lamporecchio, Tuscany, and has well-tended secret gardens, as well as olive groves to explore. This breathtaking property is spread over two floors and benefits from a private patio and communal pool area – the latter of which is shared with four neighbouring properties. We love the master suite with its fireplace – a welcome feature during the cooler months. We suggest a car for ease –  there are restaurants less than 2km away and the pretty town of Montecatini is 15km from the home.

If you love the artsy side of life, you'll thrive in this contemporary loft. Colourful art pieces stand out, with some splashes of colour added by the feature walls. Natural light pours in through the large kitchen windows – the perfect chance to watch the morning birds fly by. You even get a lovely view of the courtyard from the bedroom too. 

Spend the day at Constanti winery – this is where your host works, so she will be more than happy to give you a tour of the place. Beautiful vineyards surround the loft and a wide range of wineries to sample some of the tastiest glasses of red.

Return home to sit at the dining table while the scent of a home-cooked Italian meal fills the room from the nearby kitchen. After you've eaten, pick a book off of the shelf, and snuggle up on the sofa while the moonlight shines through the windows. Pop the TV on for background noise or simply enjoy the peace and quiet that Montalcino brings.

On the border between Valdarno and Chianti, this hilltop villa in the heart of Tuscany is just a short drive from the town of Montevarchi and within an hour of Arezzo. The rustic interior may feel dated to some, though we think it’s part of the charm. Outside, the well-kept garden offers views of the surrounding valley, a furnished portico, and a private swimming pool, open from the last Saturday of April until the first Saturday of October. 

Whispering Cypresses

Tucked away in the vineyards and olive groves of Chianti, stands this old brick farmhouse. This apartment is located on the ground floor, with private access to a hideaway garden. Just you and the Cypress trees. Ancient brick takes over the walls of this home, wooden beams line the slanted ceilings, and terracotta stone sweeps over the floors. This little haven is how Tuscan living should be – rustic, traditional, and stripped back, with gorgeous views, wine, and olives to keep you entertained no end.

Waking up here is a little slice of heaven. Enjoy a coffee on the large terrace which overlooks the rolling Chianti hills. Spend a lazy morning switching between here and your private garden, from sunbathing to daydreaming. You're encouraged to roam the grounds of this beautiful farmhouse, including its own vineyards and wine groves. Come the afternoon, explore the medieval village of Montespertoli – you're just a thirteen-minute drive from the centre. It's considered one of the wine capitals of Tuscany, perched on a hilltop, overlooking miles upon miles of vineyards. Speaking of which, you're not short of vineyards and wine tours. For something different, a cycling wine tour is a great way to see the area while tasting some fine wine along the way. Tuscany Wine and Bike offer exactly this – they're based in the heart of Montespertoli, so you can reach them easily. Round off the day with a hearty meal in the village centre, or head back to grill something delicious on the outdoor barbecue. Enjoy your new favourite local wine and watch the golden sun dip behind the hills.

Take a short stroll and you’ll find the village of Pergo is just fifteen–minutes away – there’s a supermarket here for any basic amenities you might need. A Sweet Symphony 

​​Restored by an Italian architect with a gentle touch, this villa has been updated and split into more modern apartments, but without ever compromising on the original charm. By honouring the villa's history – and thereby retaining its character – the home feels traditionally Tuscan with its terracotta tiles and wooden beams. Walk barefoot across the floors to savour the coolness of those tiles on hot days, or light a fire in the wood-burning stove and stare up at the beams, imagining what life would’ve been like here. Nonnas rolling out pastry for tortellini, children helping churn gelato, wine flowing, and bowls of food changing hands in a celebration of ingredients, and life. You might even wish to recreate that – a holiday well spent.

Alternatively, spend lazy afternoons sitting under the vines outside as you watch the sunset on the horizon. Head out to authentic Italian pizzerias for pizza and gnocchi, or make a gelato run before exploring the surroundings.

Days can be spent riding the horses from the stable, exploring the area by E-bike, or taking a cookery class at the restaurant, where you might learn how to make fresh pasta or cantuccini. On more relaxed afternoons, treat yourself to a spa or beauty treatment – there is nothing more serene than a massage in the garden, with a gentle breeze and a soundtrack of cicadas.
