That said, the local bus service makes hopping around the area a breeze, and if you do hire a car, further afield you’ll find a whole host of golf courses and water parks. After a busy day, back at the villa sun-drenched terraces and a private pool await, ready for you to finish the day relaxed, with a drink in hand.

Splashes of colour throughout the apartment add vibrancy to every room – our favourite is the deep shades of blue in the living room. Relax on the balcony in the mornings with a toasty cup of coffee while tucking into a homecooked breakfast made with produce bought from the local Santo Amaro markets.

With just a short walk, you'll find yourself in the centre of Lagos with a wide variety of shops to browse. Treat yourself to a delicious slice of cake at one of the many central cafés, followed by a trip to the beach. Make sure you bring a bucket and spade if you're with children, so you can spend the afternoon building sandcastles under the sun.

Dine at Batata Beach Bar for some coastal delicacies and return home to unwind after a day of adventuring. Head up to the rooftop pool to sit on a sun lounger with a sumptuous glass of red while watching the sunset. We recommend going for a late-night swim under the stars, the perfect way to relax while making some amazing new memories.

Located on a quiet complex, you can use the shared swimming pool here (although inflatables and jumping into the water aren’t allowed so that might be a deal-breaker if you’ve got kids). The home boasts direct access to the pool area, a sociable open-plan living space, and a private terrace overlooking the pool and gardens. If the pool rules don’t bother you, we think this home is a great choice for a hassle-free holiday with family or friends.

A sleek kitchen provides everything you need to rustle up a delicious dinner if you fancy an evening at home, and still allows you to peek out at the ocean. 

If you’re not out exploring Lagos and its welcoming beaches where water sports are a must, you can while away the hours easily in this home. Gain some respite from the Portuguese heat and sink into your private pool, swim a few lengths and you’ll soon feel re-energised. You'll find this home between the charming villages of Burgau and Luz. Close to sandy beaches, cobbled streets and fishermen's cottages, this condominium is perfectly placed for discovering all that the Algarve has to offer.

You'll have not one but three separate pools here, giving you the luxury of choice when it comes to cooling off after a day on the coast. The first is completely private, whilst the other two form part of the resort's spa. There's also a communal gym, Jacuzzi and sauna – we recommend starting your morning here to set you up for the day ahead.

Spend time surfing, exploring rock pools or even catching a boat to Lagos from the harbour – there are plenty of ways to discover this beautiful part of the world and soak up the glorious weather.

There's a family-friendly shoreline, an array of delicious local restaurants and a few wine bars in the centre, yet buzzing Lagos is only a thirteen-minute drive (or thirty-minute bus ride away), so you'll have the best of both worlds. 

Set all on one level, this home is an excellent option for families – your host can even arrange kid-friendly extras like toys, games and babysitter recommendations if the grown-ups fancy a night on the town. The living space is decked out in cool hues to mimic the coastal setting, while the open layout makes socialising together as a group a breeze. You can rustle up a tasty dinner in the kitchen, or take advantage of the Algarve's gorgeous weather and grill up a storm in the garden. The wrap-around terrace is our favourite spot – protected from the sun, it's the ideal setting for alfresco dinners and a glass of Vinho Verde as the sun goes down.

You won't have to travel far to discover Praia da Luz's sandy shores, coastal hiking routes and mouthwatering restaurants in the centre, as nearly everything is within walking distance. But for those craving some boutique shopping and buzzing nightlife, Lagos is an easy fifteen drive away.

When you're not dipping your toes in the Atlantic or admiring the views from the iconic Rocha Negra, we bet we'll find you basking in the sunshine back at home. You've got options when it comes to relaxing in the fresh air – upstairs, the main suite's balcony is a sweet spot to enjoy your morning coffee, while downstairs, a small patio with lounge chairs overlooks the complex's sparkling communal pool. The interiors are light and roomy, too, but we're not sure you'll be spending much time indoors when there's a large shared garden and swimming pool on offer. On top of this, the resort of Portimão, with its shops, restaurants and bars, is a short stroll away, as is the lovely sandy beach, Praia do Amado. Or, history lovers can hop in the car and visit the nearby Roman ruins of Quinta da Abicada.
