The first thing you'll notice is that your hosts have taken great care to preserve the original nineteenth-century features of this home while adding sophistication and style into the mix. Alongside stone walls, exposed timber frames and original wood flooring, you'll encounter bold printed wallpaper, mid-century furniture and plenty of gold accents to add a touch of luxury.

With its elevated top-floor position and sky-high vaulted ceiling, every corner of this city-centre flat is illuminated by natural light – a real rarity in these older buildings. We loved the covered balcony, where we could imagine nothing better than sitting in the wicker throne, a glass of local wine in hand, as the sound of live music drifts up from the streets below. Despite the central location, the apartment is calm and tranquil, making it perfect for families with children – especially when you add the second bunk room into the mix.

Down at street level, the neighbourhood has everything you could need, including traditional restaurants, cool cafes and well-stocked supermarkets. Meanwhile, Porto's main sights are within easy walking distance, with the riverfront promenade at Cais da Ribeira and the Neoclassical Palácio da Bolsa both a twenty-minute walk away.

We love the attention to detail bestowed on this apartment's interiors, and though the kitchen area is compact, it has everything you need to cook up some Portuguese cuisine. This apartment is beautifully lit with natural light and is ideal for a couple, solo traveller or business professional. Location-wise, several eateries are nearby, and Praça do Marquês de Pombal is a few steps away. Steps from the apartment is the riverfront, where Porto’s famous wine cellars line the banks, and walking the narrow streets of the neighbourhood you’ll find delights like Palacio Bolta three minutes away, and Mercado Ferreira Borges five minutes on foot. The first thing you’ll notice, stepping into the apartment, is the view directly over the Douro River from the wall of big windows in the living room. Wooden shutters add a touch of tradition, and the darkwood dressers and artfully faded Moroccan rugs are in keeping with the building’s history. Hardwood floors lead from the living room, to the compact kitchen in an alcove and through to the bright bedroom where the exposed stone and big sash window motif continues.

River Port

Found in one of the oldest residential buildings in Porto, this apartment might not look 200 years old thanks to modernisation, but it remains historic. Now updated to house families itching to explore this UNESCO World Heritage City, it's comfortable – though the two bedrooms with the sloped ceilings might be better for kids – and bright with a fantastic location. Walk to Porto Cathedral and other landmarks in minutes, buy fresh produce from the Bolhão market only a short stroll away, and hop on the trams to find points of interest further afield.

Located on one of Porto’s liveliest streets, this studio apartment is very close to the iconic Ribeira which can be reached on foot within seven minutes. Calling all oenophiles. This Porto apartment is situated in the city's historic wine quarter. You'll be a stone's throw from the underground cellars and local restaurants that characterise this neighbourhood and just a quick metro ride from landmarks like the Clérigos Tower and the Ribeira. The building is over 100 years old – it certainly doesn't lack charm. We adore the hand-painted blue tiles on the exterior, while inside, neoclassical windows flood the living space with sunlight and quaint Juliet balconies offer views towards the centre. It's not the largest pad and the kitchen is pretty compact, but with a desk for remote working and two cosy bedrooms, we think it'll do nicely for a Porto getaway.

Sun-Kissed Wine

Petite and pared-back, this apartment is ideally placed for sightseeing. You'll find it nestled between the shops and markets on a pedestrianised street in the heart of the city. Exploring on foot is a breeze here – or, if you'd prefer to take it easy, there are metro stops and trams nearby. Back home, the living area isn't the biggest, and the compact kitchen makes cooking anything more than a snack a challenge. However, each bedroom has an en-suite bathroom and the uncluttered design is a reprieve after a day out and about. In the early evening, we recommend watching the sunset from the nearby Miradouro da Rua das Aldas viewpoint. 

Peach & Emerald

With a fabulous address in downtown Porto, right in the heart of the city, you’ll find this apartment is near a load of attractions. Points of interest include the Mercado do Bolhão and the Tower and Church of Clérigos, as well as several parks.

Back at this home, sit in the sun on the private balcony with a glass of Port or a drink of your choice and take in the views over Porto. You can see the two spires of the Church of Our Lady of Lapa just above the rooftops from here. Or head inside and read a book on the custard yellow sofa in the light-filled living space. Later get ready in the marble-style bathroom for an evening out at one of the traditional restaurants in the neighbourhood.

You’ll be walking distance from beautiful historic buildings, located in one of the quietest streets of Ribeira, and only a thirteen-minute walk from São Bento Railway Station – which will connect you all over the city.

This stylish apartment, housed in a recently renovated 20th-century building, is located right next to Rua Santa Catarina with its international stores, while Mercado do Bolhão, a three-minute walk away, has an array of fresh produce and souvenir stalls. For culture lovers, the Chapel of Souls is a two-minute stroll with its beautiful azulejo tiled façade. Other attractions nearby include Porto Cathedral, which is fourteen minutes on foot. You can't come to Porto without sampling some Port, right? Luckily, there's a small port wine shop opposite this home, so take some back to this apartment.

Boasting views across the city, it's an excellent spot to savour a glass of port wine after sightseeing and watch the sun go down. Both bedrooms are roomy and bright, although the fifth guest will have to sleep on the sofa bed in the living area. Location-wise, you're not far from the shops on Rua de Santa Catarina or the buzz of downtown. Also nearby is Trindade Metro station for adventures further afield.

Set on the elegant Rua das Flores, this gorgeous two-bedroom flat offers you the perfect base to explore central Porto. Located up on the fourth floor, you'll enjoy breathtaking vistas over the neighbourhood rooftops towards Porto's Romanesque cathedral.

Inside, the main open-plan living space offers more than enough space for four to unwind, dine and socialise in comfort. A large corner sofa is set right by the French doors. On warm days, you can open them up to the outside world and let the city atmosphere float in on the breeze. Elsewhere, there's a four-seater dining table and a well-equipped kitchenette.

There’s also a cosy mezzanine level that is the perfect spot for reclining with a glass of wine before retreating to sumptuous bedrooms for an early night. 

Slip into the narrow cobbled streets and begin your sightseeing adventure. The 12th-century Porto Cathedral is six minutes from your doorstep and the Igreja dos Clérigos with its 75-metre-tall bell tower is reached in less than ten. When it’s time to call it a day, make a beeline for the Vitória viewpoint to watch dusk fall across the city.
