If you want to go further afield, say Lisbon, then Cascais train station is just a five-minute ride away. There are plenty of restaurants and bars nearby too which is handy as this studio apartment only has a kitchenette, with a mini-fridge, microwave and hob. We advise skipping cooking the piri-piri chicken here (or anything else needing an oven or a lot of prep). You could just chill out on your private balcony with a glass of wine – that sounds more like it.

The beautiful old town and marina in Cascais are both a twenty-minute walk away from this studio apartment. We can see why this place was once favoured as a retreat for Portuguese royals. The imposing Palace of Cascais Citadel is now a museum and is well worth a look around. There are an array of restaurants and bars nearby too which is fortunate as this studio apartment’s kitchenette is quite basic – still, it has a mini-fridge, microwave and hob, so you can make light meals. We especially like the little balcony where you can catch the day’s first sun rays before exploring the area. The apartment is within walking distance of iconic spots like Praia da Rainha and Parque Marechal Carmona, and if you’d like to venture further afield there's also a bus stop nearby that can take you to Boca do Inferno in less than twenty minutes.

Located in the heart of Cascais, this three-storey abode is just a five-minute walk from Rainha Beach and a few hundred metres from shops, restaurants and cafes. If you fancy swapping the coast for the city, Lisbon is 30 kilometres away. Our favourite feature of the home was the private terrace with views across the rooftops and the bay beyond. If you’ll be staying as a group of six, two guests will sleep on the sofa bed in the top floor sitting room.

Everything about this Quinta da Marinha villa screams sophistication. The interior is dominated by a natural colour palette and pleasing clean lines. If it sounds like we're being negative, we should also mention that there are lots of positives to point out – the row of windows on the far side of the living room is particularly generous when it comes to natural light, while the sleek kitchen has plenty of space for whipping up family-sized feasts.

Of course, if you're heading over to this corner of the country, there's every chance that you'll be trying to spend as much time out of the home as possible. Praia da Ribeira de Cascais is only a short drive away for when you're craving a dip in the Mediterranean Sea, while the Museu Condes de Castro Guimarães sits the same amount of time away if you're after something more cultural.

On summer days, while away the hours reading a book in the manicured garden, cooling off with dips in the outdoor pool before an alfresco lunch on the terrace. For the fitness minded, a beautiful cycle path stretches from the superb Guincho Beach 9 kilometres away and passes directly in front of the villa, to Cascais, 1 kilometre away. Everything you might want or need during your stay has been thought of in this luxurious and welcoming home, so you can focus on enjoying every last second of your break. 

The villa is bright and stylish, with decor and finishes that would be at home in an interior design magazine. It’s beautiful, with splashes of colour adding warmth and fun. You’ll wake up to feel the sunshine on your pillow, tempting you to head through the floor-to-ceiling glass sliding doors outside to the terrace. Sip an espresso as you breathe in the warm, sweet-scented air. 

The outside space has been as thoughtfully considered as the house. There’s something for everyone, whether you’re a sun-worshipper or prefer to lounge in the shade. Table tennis will keep the big kids entertained, while you cool off in the refreshing solar-heated pool. There’s a gym inside, too, so you can easily get a workout in – though we might be more tempted by a yoga session on the terrace. 

When you want to explore further afield, you might stroll to Galé beach, or perhaps hop in the car to visit Troia. History buffs will enjoy seeing the Roman ruins at Cetobriga, while golfers might choose to stay closer to home – Troia Golf is a five-minute drive from the villa. This is truly a holiday home with something for everyone – you’ll never want to leave.
