In addition, the views out over Palácio de São Bento, home of the Portuguese parliament, provide a real sense of place. While most visitors flock to Alfama and pack out the bars of Bairro Alto, we'd suggest that it's Príncipe Real that is on the up. Walk 500m to the lush Jardim do Príncipe Real. Here, locals gather to sit and sip coffee, play chess and gossip – it's a genuine slice of Lisbon life. But there's a lot more going on here than bica (espresso) and board games. The neighbourhood is a haven for foodies too. Right by the park, you'll find celebrated A Cevicheria, where diners gather to indulge in flawlessly executed small plate seafood. At the same time, Atalho Real serves sumptuous steaks in a laid-back atmosphere. Miguel used to live in Hunter, and it’s immediately clear that the flat used to be someone’s home. Part of a traditional period building, it's been beautifully restored to show off its best features – the living room's three sets of French doors out to the narrow, wrought iron balcony, the window shutters and the exposed parts of the wooden pombolina skeleton structure this area is known for. We love the wood floors and white walls, keeping everything cool and minimalist, while the velvet sofas and house plants make it feel like a real home from home. Here you'll be on the edge of Cais do Sodré and the Bairro Alto, so you’re in the heart of Lisbon’s thriving restaurant and bar scenes, with somewhere different to try within walking distance every night of the week.

This home is a clean and simple affair, with some pleasing attention to detail. The trendy wallpaper in the bedroom, for instance, adds a certain edge. As does the striking use of granite in the bathroom. Midcentury-style touches in the living area make it a home. Although it's nestled in the heart of beautiful Bairro Alto, the surrounding narrow streets have a quiet and distinctly village-like feel where locals know each other and the streets are filled with coffee shops, concept stores, restaurants and art galleries. By night, it's a whole other story – the neighbourhood fills with people and the streets become outdoor extensions of the many bars in the area. Your home will be a lovely peaceful spot that’s still near all the action – trendy Chiado is just an eight-minute walk away. Our favourite spot of the apartment has got to be the southwest-facing balcony – it’s narrow but long, and offers up incredible views of the River Tagus and the 25th April Bridge at sunset. Bring your evening aperitif outside as you watch the sky’s colours change, or enjoy your morning coffees out here as day settles over the city. The inside of the house is extremely welcoming – there’s a large marble dining table for meals all together and a bright, stylish living room that’s been dynamically designed. At the end of a long day, wash up in the roomy bathrooms before settling in the bedrooms, where you’ll rest easy in anticipation of another beautiful Lisbon day tomorrow.

The real superpower of this home is the floor to ceiling French doors which flood the living areas with plenty of light. This, coupled with the open-plan layout of the main space, gives the apartment a great feeling of openness (often a rarity in Lisbon). While the dining and living area offer space galore, the kitchen is on the smaller side – something culinary enthusiasts should bear in mind. All this aside, the location is spot on – in the heart of the famous Bairro Alto where you'll find a large proportion of Lisbon's best restaurants, shops, and bars.

From this apartment, visit the neo-gothic Santa Justa Lift in eleven minutes, or reach Lisbon’s historic cathedral in under twenty.

Although you might be focused on visiting every corner of this colourful city, colour really does begin at home. The bright blue exterior of your building stands out against the pink hues of neighbouring apartments, but matches the sunny skies above. And inside, the azure theme goes on beneath your feet. Back inside, you'll find modern and clean interiors with comfy furnishings that hark back to Portugal's historic roots, creating a cosy and homely feel from the get-go. Continue socialising over a glass of red as you cook for your guests in the open kitchen-dining area, benefitting from marble surfaces, artist lighting and stylish chairs. The home's warm colour palette (think red, orange and yellow) makes for a friendly living space where you'll enjoy relaxing after a day spent discovering this thriving city. With an impressive selection of museums, theatres, cinemas, and restaurants all close by, it's easy to see why this sunny home in the heart of Lisbon is so popular. As it's on the sixth floor with beautiful big windows, it does get a little toasty in the summer months. But the view from the open-plan living room overlooking the Tagus River below is truly breathtaking. We loved the Brigitte Bardot portrait and sporadic placement of bright prints and sculptures.

This studio packs loads of style into its little footprint – bold artwork, copper hanging lamps and a concrete bathroom. The bed is exceptionally comfortable, perfect for catching some much-needed sleep after a long day of sightseeing. Though small, the kitchenette has a coffee machine, toaster and microwave that are ideal for easy meals and snacks to fuel your day. Oh, and we love that TV here is best enjoyed from the bed. Lively, hilly Bairro Alto is right on your doorstep, with plenty of trendy restaurants, bookshops, old-style cafes and boutiques waiting to be checked out. It’s also a bohemian neighbourhood known for its nightlife – where rows of bars dissolve into the street to make one giant outdoor party (don’t worry though, you’ll be tucked safely away on a quiet street). At sunset, check out a view of the city at Miradouro São Pedro de Alcântara, just four minutes away. And for more exploring, you’re only a ten-minute walk to Chiado or Principe Real.

This laid-back home in Chiado is perfect for those looking to be in the heart of Lisbon’s action. Surrounded by some of the city’s best sights, this unpresumptuous home allows its open spaces and huge windows do the talking, with a minimalist design aesthetic that feels as chic as it does calm. We love the living room’s tall corniced ceilings and the large shuttered windows that make the whole space feel bright. The kitchen, too, is a masterclass in elegant simplicity, concentrating on natural textures – a marble countertop and hardwood floors – and featuring a long table that just begs to be gathered around for morning and evening feasts. The two pared-back bedrooms complete the home, along with an azulejo adorned bathroom that gives the apartment a touch of Portuguese traditionalism.
