We tested this home in the winter, so the outside spaces don't look as appealing as they will in the summer, but the building itself hides the remains of a Roman settlement, so you'll be living and breathing history.

But if you’re the going-out type, you’re only a fourteen-minute walk from Bairro Alto, a popular area for late-night spots in the Portuguese capital. Thankfully, you can return to the serenity of your home-away-from-home after a busy evening.

This home is a  paradise for shoppers – it's situated just off the tree-lined Avenida da Liberdade, famous as one of the most expensive shopping streets in Europe with its designer stores such as Cartier and Prada. For a wealth of bars, restaurants and historic architecture, take a fifteen-minute stroll to the picturesque neighbourhood of Bairro Alto. Or head to Praça do Comércio with its harbour-facing square, a twenty-minute stroll away. The immediate area isn't super touristy but feels more authentic and quiet, which is something we always like. Back at this stylish apartment, take a seat on the comfy sofa and rest your feet after all that retail therapy or get some fresh air on the balcony. This place has everything you need for a comfortable stay –  we particularly love the vintage furniture scattered throughout the house, as well as the gorgeous marble-style bathrooms. With this home, you can really live like a Lisboeta.

We love how wooden beams cleverly divide the living space from the eat-in kitchen, while the snug bedroom is tucked away down the hall. Plan to work from home? Along with high-speed wi-fi, there's a dedicated workstation with enough room for two. The location is also excellent. You'll be in Santo António, a short walk from the shops and eateries on Avenida da Liberdade. Fancy sightseeing? Hop on the metro or ride the iconic trams down to the bustling Praça do Comércio.

Admittedly, it's further away from the historical city centre, but its pastel-coloured mansion apartments and wide boulevards provide it with a charm all of its own. You'll find the enchanting ten-acre Jardim Botânico de Lisboa and the lush Jardim do Príncipe Real within a five-minute walk. While your capable kitchen can handle anything you can throw at/over it, you're spoiled for choice when it comes to local eateries – it's a veritable foodie heaven. Choose to chow down at A Cevicheria, where you can indulge in a light and zesty menu of citrus-cured fish and mouth-puckering pisco sours. Alternatively, Atalho Real plates up melt-in-the-mouth meat in a relaxed environment. Once you've eaten your fill, there's a tempting choice of local bars where you can keep the party going – Pavilhão Chinês serves imaginative long drinks in an old grocery store packed with flea market finds and bric-a-brac. At the same time, cult favourite Foxtrot might be reminiscent of a good old British pub, but the creative cocktail menu promises so much more.

Nestled in a quiet residential street in Príncipe Real, Afterglow is a great option for visitors wanting to be somewhere central but with a peaceful, calm atmosphere. The living room is open to the kitchen and dining room and gets great natural light. We loved the views you get over the city’s rooftops – but take note, the view is earned by walking up a steep street. The apartment is comfortable and it’s in great condition, making it a lovely place to come back to after a long day of pounding the pavement.

The pine floor is bright and comforting, while the large, open-plan living space has several big windows and two sets of doors opening to a narrow balcony that overlooks Jardim do Torrel – perfect for an afternoon walk. The kitchen isn't huge but it's well-equipped and there's a pretty dining table for evenings in. An apartment on two levels, a modern staircase leads up to the bedrooms in the eaves (we love the big master bedroom). Just a few steps from probably the most desirable avenue in the city, it's easy to get around from here too – it runs from the heart of the city centre to the Marquês de Pombal square.

On a quiet corner of the leafy Amoreiras district, situated ten minutes from Avenida da Liberdade’s elegant boulevards—if you want to experience Lisbon’s contemporary side, then Brimstone is for you. Inside, the home is understated and fresh, with mid-century furnishings among crisp white walls. There’s a balcony with gorgeous rooftop views and space to sit out in the warm Iberian sunshine. The living area is light-filled and spacious—a comfy sofa calls for stolen moments with your favourite book, while the dining table inspires group dinners and animated schedule planning. Put Park Eduardo VII at the top of your list. Located well under a fifteen-minute walk away, the views of the Tagus river are some of the best in Lisbon. Plus, its home to the lush flora of the Estufa Fria (cold greenhouse) and nearby Marques do Pombal metro station, connecting you with some of the city’s most revered restaurants.

The streets surrounding this apartment are part of Principe Real – one of the trendiest neighbourhoods in Lisbon, where new cafes crop up almost every month alongside organic markets and original clothing boutiques. Thanks to the hilltop location, this split-level home has incredible views over the Tagus River and the city's varied architecture, and the best spot to take it all in is from the balcony. Just grab a bottle of wine (your host generously leaves one for you) and take your front-row seat to gorgeous sunsets over the rooftops. When you're in the mood to cook, the kitchen has everything you need – there's also a produce market held on Saturdays in the park nearby to stock up on fresh produce. Downstairs is relaxed and cosy, with pops of bright reds and a clean, contemporary living space that's an excellent place to hang out after a busy day. We think this apartment is a great match for a family or friend group that want a vibrant locale, excellent views and easy access to transport links.

You’ll start your mornings at the dining table, washing down sweet Portuguese pastries with an espresso or two, before watching the bustle of Restauradores Square from your Juliet balcony. Fall back onto the sofa and nestle among the plump cushions with a good book until you feel ready to explore your surroundings. 

Begin with a trip to the Carmo Convent, just a short walk away, then make your way down to Rua Augusta for a spot of shopping. Solar has excellent natural light and it's obvious that it's been designed by an architect – the azulejo details give subtle, yet frequent nods to traditional Portuguese design. Although we'd love to see some more artwork on the walls, this home does an excellent job of mixing several different stone textures that give each room a distinct character.

Located on Praça dos Restauradores – a beautiful landmark in its own right – this bright home lets you sightsee from the comfort of your living room. A peak out of the window grants you views of a number of the city's most iconic buildings, including the ornate Palacio Foz directly opposite. This home has been put together with care and attention to detail. The furniture is minimalist, and together with the comfortable sofa, it creates a clean look, complimenting the abundance of natural light. Nearby you'll find a number of the city's best independent boutiques, as well as international names. A couple of standouts include Livraria Bertrand – the oldest book shop in the world is a ten-minute walk away – and the elegant Brasileira cafe is an eight-minute walk. Just round the corner, you'll find the atmospheric Rossio Square – a hangout spot for locals and visitors alike.

Located in Principe Real, this home is close to all central attractions, but the immediate surroundings are fairly quiet. Even though this home is located in an old building, both the exterior and interior are impeccable. Evaristo's Cauldron preserves traditional Portuguese architectural features while ensuring that this home is comfortable, functional, and designed with a mixture of old and new chic.

We particularly loved how your host has combined shades of green to create a cohesive and sophisticated look. Outside, there’s a patio and garden – a peaceful spot to unwind after a long day exploring the city. And, with luxurious Avenida da Liberdade, busy Marques de Pombal Square, and beautiful Eduardo VII Park all under fifteen minutes walk away, there's no shortage of things to see and do nearby. If you’re curious to explore further afield, you can catch the train from Cais do Sodré to Carcavelos for seaside strolls – it’ll take you no more than an hour.

Location might be the most important consideration when you’re booking an escape to the city, but with this home in the heart of Lisbon that doesn’t mean compromising on style. Already crisp, minimal, and understated, you can also add bright to the list as soon as you open the shuttered windows dotted around this home. With the light streaming in, the contrast of the mostly white interior will make the green of the house plants look all the more vivid, whilst creating a calming and rejuvenating atmosphere. Enjoy the mezzanine bedroom by staying in bed with a good book and a cup of coffee. Eventually, you can make your way down to the sleek kitchen to grab a bite to eat before setting off to explore the city on your doorstep. 

The iconic Lisbon Cathedral is a thirty-minute walk away, but there are plenty of restaurants and cafes along the way to make a pit stop, or two, at. Put your photography skills to the test as you try to capture the vibrance of the city as you make the twenty-three-minute walk to the monumental 1940 Fonte Luminosa. There are also plenty of museums to explore and then Time Out Market lies in wait at the other end of an eighteen-minute trip on the public transport. Wherever your feet take you, you can always head back to this homely oasis when you need to put them up and simply relax.

Located in the stylish Príncipe Real bairro of Lisbon, walking distance from the quaint shaded Praça das Flores, this top floor apartment has some of the best views Lisbon has to offer. The interiors are traditional yet fully updated, with abstract art and framed Joan Miró prints adding a contemporary edge. But it’s the balconies that really make this home. As soon as you wake up, settle into the sight of the terracotta rooftops and iconic Abril de 25 Bridge washed in the morning’s soft yellow light—it’s really quite something. Better still, there’s another small outside space at the rear of the property so you’ll never have to miss a second of the Iberian sunshine. Your neighbourhood is renowned for its selection of trendy restaurants, bars and gelaterias. Plus, Lisbon’s charming trams operate in the area, with a stop a five-minute walk away, so you’re easily connected with the rest of the city.

It doesn't get more stylish – and central – than this design-led flat, just two minutes from Rossio Square. Contrasting Lisbon's colourful aesthetic, the sleek home is decorated with a monochrome scheme and touches of luxury throughout, bursting with features to fall in love with. For us, the private balcony with uninterrupted city views had to take the top prize – and we have a feeling you'll agree.

Start your day sipping coffee in this scenic spot, and allocate sufficient time to relax on the sofa and admire your surroundings. The swoon-worthy herringbone floors are cleverly highlighted by the lack of colour elsewhere, bringing warmth and a twist of old-school class to the space. The apartment is housed in an artfully renovated building that oozes premium appeal. We expect the grand lobby will bring you joy each time you come and go.

Life in Noir

The streets between Jardim do Princípe Real and Avenida da Liberdade are far from touristy – the houses are populated with real Lisbon residents, who go about the business between small shops and cafes. Rainy Night is located inside a typical Portuguese townhouse, albeit one that looks a bit more scruffy on the outside – unlike the apartment. The home has a lovely view and lots of natural light, with a simple, functional design that doesn't clutter. We particularly liked the French doors and the wooden headboard in the master bedroom.

The relaxed bohemian vibe and personal touches of this unique apartment are very much grounded in Lisbon. Like the city itself, it’s crammed full of personality, mixing old features like original wooden flooring, with modern ceramic touches and artwork. The balcony, which leads off both the living room and kitchen, is a rarity in Lisbon and is a great spot to take five with a coffee and give a nod to your neighbours (Lisbon apartment living doesn’t offer much seclusion, but you knew that already).  And who cares when there’s this much waiting to be explored below. Wander the cobbled streets to nearby Avenida da Liberdade - regarded as Lisbon’s chicest street. Or head just around the corner to one of the city’s best-kept secrets, Torel Garden, with its amazing viewpoints of the city. 

The Transatlantic

This home is a peaceful city oasis, perfect for those who want to escape the city noise. Furnished with a love for rustic elegance, it gives off a sense of fairytale glamour. Most of the furniture has been hand-picked and brought over from Indonesia by the host in search if the perfect textural patterns, giving this home a harmonious vibe in every room. While we loved the hand-carved details and the woodwork in the living room, our favourite is the traditionally paved terrace – perfect for lazy afternoon lunches. 

Fay Well

Located just a five-minute walk from the Praça do Marquês de Pombal, this colourful home is an ideal base for those looking to experience a more local side to Lisbon. Inside, the living room pops in shades of mint and sage while wall-length windows let in plenty of natural light. The bedroom, too, boasts the same large windows and herringbone floors, with its striking black and sand-coloured walls creating a peaceful space to retreat to after a day of seeing the sights. After enjoying a soak under the shower in the subway-tiled bathroom and sitting down to coffee and a pastéis de nata at the Scandi dining table, head out to explore your surroundings. The Parque Eduardo VII is a five-minute walk away, the Santa Justa Lift is walkable in twenty-five minutes, while the shop and restaurant-lined Avenida da Liberdade is a thirteen-minute stroll from your door.
