Already crisp, minimal, and understated, you can also add bright to the list as soon as you open the shuttered windows dotted around this home. With the light streaming in, the contrast of the mostly white interior will make the green of the house plants look all the more vivid, whilst creating a calming and rejuvenating atmosphere. Enjoy the mezzanine bedroom by staying in bed with a good book and a cup of coffee. Eventually, you can make your way down to the sleek kitchen to grab a bite to eat before setting off to explore the city on your doorstep. 

The iconic Lisbon Cathedral is a thirty-minute walk away, but there are plenty of restaurants and cafes along the way to make a pit stop, or two, at. Put your photography skills to the test as you try to capture the vibrance of the city as you make the twenty-three-minute walk to the monumental 1940 Fonte Luminosa. There are also plenty of museums to explore and then Time Out Market lies in wait at the other end of an eighteen-minute trip on the public transport. Freshly renovated and flooded with natural light, it's a cheerful space that's perfectly located for those wanting to explore Lisbon like a local. The pine floor is bright and comforting, while the large, open-plan living space has several big windows and two sets of doors opening to a narrow balcony that overlooks Jardim do Torrel – perfect for an afternoon walk. The kitchen isn't huge but it's well-equipped and there's a pretty dining table for evenings in. An apartment on two levels, a modern staircase leads up to the bedrooms in the eaves (we love the big master bedroom). Just a few steps from probably the most desirable avenue in the city, it's easy to get around from here too – it runs from the heart of the city centre to the Marquês de Pombal square.

Housed in an 18th-century building just ​​seconds from Avenida da Liberdade in Lisbon, this beautifully bright home is a stylish, comfortable base from which to explore the city’s most iconic sights. We tested this home in the winter, so the outside spaces don't look as appealing as they will in the summer, but the building itself hides the remains of a Roman settlement, so you'll be living and breathing history.

Larousse is quite a particular home with a unique structure that's hard to find in Lisbon.  The modern minimalist furniture works well with the traditional bare bones of this typical townhouse, creating a pleasant communal area that includes a sociable kitchen. The second bedroom is located on the mezzanine and it isn't well separated from the communal area – it will only suit those who can get up the steep stairs and appreciate the open space. But you'll get to enjoy a great view and a location that will get you close to the sights and the best shops in town.

While your capable kitchen can handle anything you can throw at/over it, you're spoiled for choice when it comes to local eateries – it's a veritable foodie heaven. Choose to chow down at A Cevicheria, where you can indulge in a light and zesty menu of citrus-cured fish and mouth-puckering pisco sours. Alternatively, Atalho Real plates up melt-in-the-mouth meat in a relaxed environment. Once you've eaten your fill, there's a tempting choice of local bars where you can keep the party going – Pavilhão Chinês serves imaginative long drinks in an old grocery store packed with flea market finds and bric-a-brac. At the same time, cult favourite Foxtrot might be reminiscent of a good old British pub, but the creative cocktail menu promises so much more.

Nestled in a quiet residential street in Príncipe Real, Afterglow is a great option for visitors wanting to be somewhere central but with a peaceful, calm atmosphere. The living room is open to the kitchen and dining room and gets great natural light. We loved the views you get over the city’s rooftops – but take note, the view is earned by walking up a steep street. The apartment is comfortable and it’s in great condition, making it a lovely place to come back to after a long day of pounding the pavement.

Thanks to the hilltop location, this split-level home has incredible views over the Tagus River and the city's varied architecture, and the best spot to take it all in is from the balcony. Just grab a bottle of wine (your host generously leaves one for you) and take your front-row seat to gorgeous sunsets over the rooftops. When you're in the mood to cook, the kitchen has everything you need – there's also a produce market held on Saturdays in the park nearby to stock up on fresh produce. Downstairs is relaxed and cosy, with pops of bright reds and a clean, contemporary living space that's an excellent place to hang out after a busy day. We think this apartment is a great match for a family or friend group that want a vibrant locale, excellent views and easy access to transport links.

Boasting a lively, multicultural atmosphere and plenty of parks, art galleries and eateries, Anjos is widely considered to be the trendiest neighbourhood in Lisbon. It’s also very well-connected, just fifteen minutes from the historic centre by public transport yet tucked away from the tourist hustle and bustle. You’ll find this stylish home here, nestled amidst pastel-hued Pombaline architecture and providing the perfect base for those seeking an authentic slice of the city.  

Inside, it’s a timeless canvas of high ceilings, hardwood floors and floor-to-ceiling French windows, ushering in heaps of natural light. Though compact, the interior is exquisitely renovated and offers all the bells and whistles for a comfortable stay, including a modern kitchen and a cosy mezzanine bedroom. However, the real highlight is undoubtedly the little balcony. Drenched in sunlight and furnished with a table and chairs, it's a lovely spot for alfresco breakfasts in the sun. Spend mornings roosted here, sipping coffee amidst the terracotta-tiled rooftops before a stroll through Eduardo VII Park, just seventeen minutes away on foot.

Located on Praça dos Restauradores – a beautiful landmark in its own right – this bright home lets you sightsee from the comfort of your living room. A peak out of the window grants you views of a number of the city's most iconic buildings, including the ornate Palacio Foz directly opposite. This home has been put together with care and attention to detail. The furniture is minimalist, and together with the comfortable sofa, it creates a clean look, complimenting the abundance of natural light. Nearby you'll find a number of the city's best independent boutiques, as well as international names. A couple of standouts include Livraria Bertrand – the oldest book shop in the world is a ten-minute walk away – and the elegant Brasileira cafe is an eight-minute walk. Just round the corner, you'll find the atmospheric Rossio Square – a hangout spot for locals and visitors alike.

Rua de São José is famous for its opulent design boutiques, as well as upscale restaurants and bars that make this street a perfect day out for those who appreciate the finer things in life. Solar has excellent natural light and it's obvious that it's been designed by an architect – the azulejo details give subtle, yet frequent nods to traditional Portuguese design. Although we'd love to see some more artwork on the walls, this home does an excellent job of mixing several different stone textures that give each room a distinct character.

You’ll be just a nine-minute walk from Lisbon’s prime shopping destination – Avenida da Liberdade – but if you’d rather peruse the gardens than the shops, Parque Eduardo VII is an easy five-minute walk away and the perfect spot for morning strolls. Back at home, you’ll find a calming two-tone mint palette that complements the gorgeous herringbone floors. The furniture is simple and cosy, and the space gets plenty of light from the large front windows. We especially love the large communal courtyard, with an abundance of tables for alfresco meals or evening cocktails with friends. And when it’s time for bed, you’ll find the colour scheme shifts from mint to a sleepier navy, lulling you into peaceful dreams of the city.

It's impossible to talk about Evaristo's Cauldron without first mentioning the lovely host Susana, who lives in the same building and treats all guests as if they were old friends. Located in Principe Real, this home is close to all central attractions, but the immediate surroundings are fairly quiet. Even though this home is located in an old building, both the exterior and interior are impeccable. Evaristo's Cauldron preserves traditional Portuguese architectural features while ensuring that this home is comfortable, functional, and designed with a mixture of old and new chic.

If you’re curious to explore further afield, you can catch the train from Cais do Sodré to Carcavelos for seaside strolls – it’ll take you no more than an hour.

We think it's a great choice for small families – your host can provide a cot and high chair for little ones, and one of the bedrooms has a dedicated desk for remote work or study. The other bedroom has a small balcony with enough room to stand and enjoy the garden views, but not enough space to sit out. You'll find the Rato Metro station close by though, making traversing the city and discovering its iconic landmarks a breeze.

Return from a culture-packed afternoon of sightseeing and sprawl out on the plump sofa with a glass of Rioja, immediately noticing the tranquil atmosphere of your modern pad. 

The sleek, open kitchen and dining area mean you can prepare a few traditional dishes to accompany your aperitivo while keeping up with the conversation and customary card games. There's plenty of room for inviting guests over, without feeling on top of each other. Located just a two-minute walk away from Avenida da Liberdade, this home is a great stay for those interested in a little shopping during their trip to Lisbon. It's a lovely spot to hang out between adventures, with parquet floors and decorations made by local Portuguese artists. This home gets great natural light at all times of the day, thanks to the wall-wide windows in both the living area and the bedroom. However, we think you'll want to head up to the fabulous shared roof terrace, where you can chill out on the up-cycled furniture and sip a cool drink while admiring the views over the Marquês de Pombal neighbourhood. This district is known for its eclectic collection of eateries and luxury boutiques, but is also well-connected to the older parts of the city. Simply stroll to Bairro Alto and Chiado in around half an hour, or hop on the metro – it's just at the end of the street.

Juniper & Cream

The streets between Jardim do Princípe Real and Avenida da Liberdade are far from touristy – the houses are populated with real Lisbon residents, who go about the business between small shops and cafes. Rainy Night is located inside a typical Portuguese townhouse, albeit one that looks a bit more scruffy on the outside – unlike the apartment. The home has a lovely view and lots of natural light, with a simple, functional design that doesn't clutter. We particularly liked the French doors and the wooden headboard in the master bedroom.
