Inside the apartment itself, there's a tranquil ambiance thanks to the blue and cream colour scheme, reminding you that the water's edge isn't too far away. Getting lost in Mouraria's winding streets is a trip into the past, and part of the neighbourhood's authentic appeal. The Azure Terrace is situated in a house typical for the neighbourhood, which means that the outside (in stark contrast to the home itself) is a bit scruffy. The abundance of fado shown in the vicinity is just a bonus.

Nestled in the historic district of Alfama, the home sets you up for a traditional stay, within easy reach of the city's top attractions. And yet the area is surprisingly quiet, and with the inviting terrace that awaits you, it's the perfect pad for those who like a quick recharge in between adventures. The living space is bright and practical, with a fully equipped kitchenette, and both bedrooms come with desks for those working remotely. Just note that you'll need to climb up a staircase to reach this apartment on the third floor.

Situated in the charming area of Graça, this luminous flat is a cosy retreat in one of Lisbon's most authentic neighbourhoods. The sun-kissed private terrace is our favourite spot. Begin the morning out there with a strong cup of coffee and pasteis de nata in the fresh air – your host can also arrange breakfast – and close the day with a glass of Vinho Verde come nightfall. You'll also have access to a communal garden, which is perfect for picnics in the late-afternoon sunshine. Inside, the sleek design is complemented by brilliant pops of red. Sprawl out on the sofa for a post-sightseeing catnap or gather around the table for a typical Portuguese dinner. 

Another thing we adore is the location. You're a bit further away from the hustle and bustle in the city centre, but with the famous 28 Tram a short walk away, you won't have to travel far to see the sights. Here, narrow streets are flanked by local restaurants, bakeries and open-air cafes, all serving up delectable regional dishes. Make sure to take in the panoramic views from the hilltop observation points – our favourite is Miradouro da Senhora do Monte, easily reached on foot. Or, explore in style and ask your host to arrange river cruises, helicopter tours and other experiences.

Sharing a wall with São Vicente da Fora monastery, this stylish apartment will get you up close and personal with Alfama’s history and pre-earthquake architecture. 

Inside the home, expect a generous use of wood and mid-century modern furniture. There’s a cosy living area with a desk should you need to work during your stay and a compact kitchenette with all the essentials you’ll need for putting together quick meals. After a cup of coffee and a traditional sweet pastry in the sunshine of the communal courtyard, head into the higgledy-piggledy streets that surround your pad. 

Explore São Jorge Castle, a ten-minute walk away, before catching the iconic tram 28 to Baxia, Lisbon’s downtown district. Shop along the Rua Augusta, people watch in the elegant Praça do Comércio and admire the River Tagus from the top of the Santa Justa Lift.

Situated in Alfama, this well-appointment apartment has the very best of historic Lisbon on its doorstep. The Miradouro de Santa Luzia (one of the best viewpoints in the city) and bustling Praça do Comércio are within walking distance, and there’s a Tram 28 tram stop a couple of hundred metres away. The age of the building means you may hear the neighbours during your stay, so we recommend packing earplugs if you’re a light sleeper. There are also some signs of wear and tear in the bathroom, though this is cosmetic, and everything works as it should.

Of course, those areas attract visitors for a reason, and you're well within a ten-to-twenty-five minute walk of most of the city's headline attractions, including Sé de Lisboa, Praça do Comercio and Convento do Carmo. However, for an authentic taste of Lisbon, there are plenty of classic cafes and local restaurants closer to home that will charge you a lot less by dint of not being in the centre.

Once you're inside the apartment, you'll be greeted by a stunning open-plan space with a bench seating area, a six-seater dining table and a sleek wooden kitchen. A polished concrete floor only adds to the contemporary aesthetic, while the balcony offers a partial panorama over the city. Elsewhere, three individually decorated bedrooms (including one en-suite) provide serene surroundings to unwind at the end of a busy day.


Seven Hills

In the hilly old streets of Lisbon’s Alfama neighbourhood, you’ve got viewpoints and ancient sights at every turn. From your doorstep, it’s a fifteen-minute walk to the ancient fortification of Castelo S. Jorge, overlooking the orange rooftops of Old Lisbon. A little closer to home, you can explore the trinkets and artworks of Mercado de Santa Clara, a vintage market five minutes’ walk away. Of course, this close to the centre, the streets around you are packed with restaurants, bars and bakeries to fuel your days.

Inside, fawn walls are livened up with bold floral artworks and pops of lipstick-red thanks to the plush dining chairs. The kitchen is a soothing space of lightwood and white, with everything you need for self-catering. The apartment is a good size, with a separate dining area and a lounging corner that lends it a cosy vibe, while the use of marble in the bathroom adds a few style points. Staying here puts you within a few minutes' walk of hilltop Castelo São Jorge and many other central sights – perfect for a first-time visitor. You're also conveniently close to a stop on the iconic number 12 tram's route, which means you can put your feet up after a day of exploring at your own pace. To end the day as the locals do, we'd suggest grabbing a seat outside the bohemian bar, Botequim. This iconic Lisbon watering hole is an excellent spot for a sunset glass of local wine.

A room with a view – yes please. This apartment is based in the historic Graça district, close to the Senhora do Monte viewpoint. Its elevated position means that it boasts a glorious view of Lisbon, which can be enjoyed on the petite but charming balcony. The rest of the apartment is on the small side too, but with so much to explore from your doorstep, you’re not likely to want to spend too long inside anyway. Most of Lisbon’s must-visit sights are within walking distance, so pack comfy shoes.

Even for ventures further afield, you'll find Graça bus stop is only a minute's walk away. We think it's ideal for families and groups of friends, with a private outside dining terrace complete with a barbecue, as well as plenty of indoor space to relax. The colourful bedrooms will have you up and raring to go come morning – and just as well, with so much to see and do nearby. Note that there's no lift here, so be prepared to climb three flights of stairs to reach the apartment.

Cloaked in rich tapestry and quirky decor, this home has an undeniable air of splendour. We particularly love the regal piano, calling you for late-night sing-along sessions. But when you step into the kitchen, you'll see how homely and inviting this apartment is, with its colourful tiles and huge dining table fit for family dinners of laughs, drinks, and old stories. It's one that's built to be cooked in, and in this beautiful, well-equipped kitchen, you'll be glad to do so. It also gives you a sneak peek of the jaw-dropping beauty that's outside, the pièce de résistance of this home – the balcony. 

You can step right out onto the balcony from the kitchen and living room, and there's even a smaller one that can be accessed from both bedrooms. From the main balcony, you're treated to one of the best views in all of Lisbon, it's even good enough to rival the nearby Senhora do Monte viewpoint. You'll love spending lazy mornings sipping on coffee, looking out at the view, and feeling the glow of the morning sun on your face, before heading out to explore Lisbon. 

You're steps away from the historic 28 tram, which famously takes passengers to all of Lisbon's most iconic and beautiful neighbourhoods. Alfama, the cathedral, Baixa, all the way to Campo Ourique. Get lost through the city's narrow, winding roads, stop off at quaint bars, and sample traditional Portuguese cuisine, before your feet can no longer carry you and it's time to head back to your apartment. But really, you'll be looking forward to getting back home so you can sip on a glass of local wine and watch the sunset from the best seat in town. Soak it all in before getting the barbecue going for balmy nights of grilled food, drinks, and card games on the balcony.

Though you're a bit far from Praça do Comércio and the city centre (it's a fifteen-minute bus ride), staying in Graça is worth it. You'll find colourful houses, local restaurants making traditional Portuguese fare and independent shops nestled amongst the cobblestone alleyways. Not to mention this area has some of the best viewpoints in Lisbon – we suggest Miradouro da Graça, which is a fifteen-minute walk away.

Right around the corner from Castelo São Jorge, this large, elegant home is within walking distance of most central Lisbon sights – perfect for a first-time visitor to the city. Thanks to the original windows, this apartment enjoys fantastic natural light – and the well-executed hangout spots under them are great for reading. The carefully selected furniture works well with the original architectural features, and your hosts have been careful not to overfill the home. You'll be staying in Alfama, one of Lisbon's oldest neighbourhoods, famous for fado houses and wonderful hospitality. After exploring on foot, your home is conveniently close to a stop on the iconic number 12 tram, which means you can rest up as you trundle back up the hill. End the day in true local style at Botequim, a couple of hundred metres up the road. Grab a seat outside this iconic Lisbon watering hole and sip on a glass of local wine as the sun sets.

Found in a bold residential building in the historical heart of Graça, this apartment goes down a treat with families or groups of friends wanting to explore Lisbon's vibrant culture. Minutes away from the beautiful Cathedral and surrounded by restaurants and cafes, it's only a ten-minute walk to Martim Moniz, where public transport can zip you across the city. A city, which coincidentally, you can see quite well from the apartment's panoramic views – it helps that the building is perched on one of Graça's highest hills. Bright, cosy, and with a central location? We think yes.

In cities across the globe, it's more often than not true that the closer a home is to the centre, the less likely it is that it'll have any outdoor space. This apartment in the middle of Lisbon bucks this trend – not only does it have a private terrace with an alfresco dining table, but guests also get access to a communal garden that's blessed with bountiful amounts of plant life.

While these respective spaces are an explosion of colour, the home's interior is much simpler by contrast. The walls and ceilings are painted stark white, which makes it feel instantly bright and welcoming. There's a minimalist approach to furnishings and decoration, although the kitchen that could kindly be described as space-efficient perhaps embraces this trend a little too much. Aside from that, there's very little to fault with this simple but elegant home.

To top it all off, the location is excellent regardless if you're visiting Lisbon for the first or fiftieth time. Both Museu Nacional do Azulejo and Castelo de São Jorge can be reached in around twenty minutes on foot, albeit in opposite directions, while Praça do Comércio takes all of eighteen minutes to reach on the tram.

How can you say no to a view like that? With sweeping vistas across the Tagus River, this contemporary penthouse is a one-of-a-kind getaway right on Lisbon's riverfront. Pull up a chair, open a bottle of Vinho Verde and admire the scenery from the porthole-style windows. But if that's not enough, you can take in the panoramic views of the city – including the National Pantheon – from the communal rooftop terrace. Back inside, the modern design is sleek and stylish, with lots of natural light and cosy spots to unwind. When you feel like cooking, the glossy kitchen has everything you need to rustle up a meal and the living room's fireplace is perfect for chilly evenings. And we loved the welcome basket on arrival, filled with a bottle of white wine, fresh fruit and delicious Portuguese custard tarts. Location-wise, you're a little outside the bustling city centre, but it's still an excellent spot to base yourself. Restaurants and museums are just a stone's throw away, while Castelo de S. Jorge is twenty minutes on foot. But with Santa Apolónia Station a three-minute walk away, getting around the rest of the city is a breeze – you can be in Praça do Comércio in five minutes, flat.

You’ll be steps from one of the most magical lookout points in the city – Senhora de Monte – and surrounded by the district of Graça. It has the local atmosphere of an old neighbourhood – full of shops, butchers, restaurants and cafes, while still being central to the sights of the city. Hop on the legendary yellow tram 28, which passes 100 metres in front of the home, and ride it to the top of Lisbon’s hills to admire the city’s architectural treasures. You’re only a twelve-minute walk from the beautiful buildings and streets of Alfama, where Lisbon’s charm is sure to take hold of you.

Escape the buzz of downtown Lisbon at this unique apartment offering the best of both worlds. Though set within a quiet traditional neighbourhood, you're just on the outskirts of Graça. One of Lisbon's most charming and oldest districts, there's street art, cafes, and restaurants aplenty.  Inside the apartment, we can’t get enough of the historic features and high ceilings. And though small, we think it’s beautifully formed. The owners have kept the space pared-back and contemporary, letting the light stream in through those full-height windows and Juliet balcony with views out onto the courtyard below. The quiet garden shared between the other apartments is a real bonus in Lisbon where outdoor space is scarce. If you’re looking for a stylish bolthole to rest your head after a day sampling Lisbon life, this might just be it.

This minimalist Lisbon crashpad is in the perfect location to discover the soul of the Portuguese capital. Our favourite thing to do is wander the labyrinthine streets that wind up and down the steep hillside with no real plan, save for a growing desire to eat all the pastel de nata. So don your most comfortable shoes and get lost in Alfama, the views from the hilltop miradouras (viewpoints) serve to refuel you after the climbs. The views, and water. Don't forget to take a bottle with you. And if you get lost? Leave your phone in your pocket and just head downhill. All roads lead to the River Tagus, eventually.

Fado in the Alfama

Located in authentic Graça, with charming buildings, churches and restaurants nearby, plus easy access to tram 28, this little apartment is a true hidden gem. While the interiors may not be the most inspiring and the kitchen is on the smaller side, the real standout here is the pretty terrace, which serves as an idyllic spot for alfresco breakfasts or to enjoy a chilled glass of wine under the orange trees. The shared garden also provides a shaded oasis for you to relax after exploring the local area and climbing the city's biggest hills – you'll find the Senhora do Monte a short walk away. 

Jardim de Pedro 

The views of the Tejo river are what really make this modern apartment stand out. It's hard to imagine anything better than sitting with a glass of Portuguese wine on the private terrace, watching the sunset glint off the water. There's also a shared garden, decorated with red berries, fruit trees and aromatic plants. Inside, the beautiful high ceilings make the place feel extra roomy, while the sleek kitchen has everything for stress-free self-catering. Comfortable and modern, we think this pad is an excellent spot to call home – and the location is pretty great, too. Set in historic Graça atop one of Lisbon's seven hills, you won't get the same bustle that you would in other neighbourhoods, but that's fine by us. It's right near the famous 28 tram stop, which goes through all the historic districts in the city and there are bars, restaurants and fado clubs aplenty. Or take your holiday up a notch and book a cruise on the Tagus, a surf lesson, helicopter flight, wine tour or at home-massage – all of which can be arranged by your lovely hosts.

Vine Leaf

Located in the Graça neighbourhood of Lisbon, this spot offers views across the Tagus River and Lisbon's National Pantheon. Just a four-minute walk from the nearest supermarket and Portuguese bakery, the balcony terrace makes an idyllic little spot to sit with your morning coffee and pastries overlooking the city's rooftops. However, it's worth noting that the kitchen is small, and its compact layout makes it difficult to cook more substantial meals. Conveniently, the bedrooms feature air conditioning, although we think the fourth bedroom (with a double sofa bed) is better suited to one guest rather than two.

Hilly Graça serves as the backdrop to this bright apartment just a ten-minute walk from  Miradouro da Senhora do Monte, Lisbon’s highest viewing point. Inside, white walls, wood floors and contemporary furnishings create a warm and friendly welcome in the living room, with a glass door leading out onto a wrought-iron Juliet balcony. This is the perfect spot to begin your day with coffee while gazing out over the city’s red rooftops. And, with an equally beautiful Juliet balcony in the bedroom, you’re never far from a stunning view. If you’re looking to experience an authentic side to Lisbon, this home in Graça is the ideal spot. From its polished wood floors to its sloped ceilings and large windows, chic meets comfort in this dazzlingly bright home. We love the living room’s French doors that open out onto a private balcony – ideal for mornings over coffee and a pastel de nata, or watching the sunset over the city’s red rooftops. The bedrooms, meanwhile, are simple yet quirkily fun, with pieces of fun modern art (hello Koons-style dog) that give them plenty of character. We were particularly fond of the master bedroom with its angled ceiling and steps leading out onto a viewing ledge with views of the neighbouring azulejo-clad buildings. With plenty of quiet corners to curl up in with a good book and a snazzy modern kitchen in which to cook up feasts (when you’re not sampling the local foodie hotspots), you’ll have everything you need for a blissfully relaxing stay. Outside of your home, you’re just a five-minute walk from the Miradouro da Senhora do Monte viewing point with its glorious views, a fifteen-minute stroll from the Alfama and São Jorge Castle, as well as a twenty-minute walk from the Santa Justa Lift. 


Zebra Crossing

Set along a quiet street in the traditional Graça neighbourhood, this apartment offers you peace and tranquillity while being within easy reach of Lisbon's lively city centre. You'll find plenty of casual eateries and hidden wine bars nearby, plus the viewpoint of Senhora do Monte is just 100m from your door. Inside, the home is surprisingly practical. The open living and dining area makes for sociable hang-outs, and both bedrooms have en-suite bathrooms to speed mornings along. It's worth noting that the kitchen is a little dated, although it's well-equipped for preparing homemade meals. There's also a lift and garage parking within the apartment building.

It might be small, but this home is filled with light and furnished with style. In between the teal walls and hardwood furniture, the hosts' love for baroque details is revealed in the form of vignettes that bring the living room to life. Located in the residential São Vicente, you'll only be a short walk away from the medieval Alfama and São Vicente de Fora Monastery.

Enter this splendid apartment and feel yourself instantly transported back in time – this is a unique home, with rich history and plenty of character. Originally part of an ancient convent, the house, which dates back to 1512, was destroyed during the 1755 earthquake. Restored and converted into an apartment, it still carries more than a little of its former grandeur. 

While the shortage of natural light might be a downside for some, we actually love the slightly sombre yet cosy feel of the place, and warm lighting and gorgeous furnishings will make you feel instantly welcome. There is something of a museum-like feel about this place – and we mean this in the best possible way. How often do you find yourself wanting to lounge about period sofas and look inside antique books while wandering around museums? Small but mighty, this bold home in the Graça district has some of Lisbon's most iconic landmarks within walking distance. The National Pantheon, Sé Cathedral and São Jorge Castle lie minutes away, and Feira da Ladra, the famous flea market, operates close by. Although the apartment is compact, it has enough room for a small family, and there's a balcony – with fantastic city views, no less – where you can enjoy alfresco breakfasts or late-night drinks. You also have all of Lisbon at your feet, but it's worth mentioning it's a steep walk back up to the home, plus another flight of steps to reach the first floor – luckily, there's a tram stop nearby.

Although this home was built with functionality in mind, we found plenty to love about The Writer's Corne beyond its on-point location in Lisbon. Nestled in one of the most diverse neighbourhoods in Lisbon, Mouraria's narrow and colourful streets will show you a different side of the capital. Minimal interiors, soft furnishings and a laid-back design aesthetic give way to lots of natural light flooding through the space.  At the edge of the dining area, there's a great little spot with a chair and desk, flooded with light – perfect for writing your travel memoir or remote working. With the master bedroom featuring its own en-suite bathroom, leaving the main bathroom for the other guests - this home truly is the perfect spot for a small group of friends who want to lap up Lisbon with pure ease and comfort. For days of downtime and relaxation, make the most of the resident-only terrace and infinity pool that offers a breathtaking view of the historic São Jorge Castle.
