This spacious villa on the Algarve coast was designed with families in mind. For kids, there’s a playpark in the garden and a swimming pool for cooling off. Within driving distance of several exquisite beaches, this resort apartment is calling all sun lovers to its doors. But the proximity to Praia de Vilamoura and other sandy shores isn't the only great thing about this family pad. The shared swimming pool will keep little ones happy for hours, and there's also a communal gym and plenty of outdoor seating. The apartment itself has a balcony where you can enjoy alfresco meals together. Two guests will be sleeping on the sofa bed in the living space. We can see it being best for kids, but there's enough room for it to work for a couple, too.

In the Old Village neighbourhood of Vilamoura, this modern villa puts the long sandy beach, restaurants, supermarkets and bars on your doorstep. Choose between days on the golden sand nearby, or lazing by the long infinity pool. There’s a covered dining area for shaded lunches and plenty of loungers to soak up the rays. The open living area inside is big enough for social gatherings and there’s an additional hang-out space in the basement with a ping-pong table. The decor feels a little sparse, so this place would suit fans of minimalism, rather than homeliness.  

The Temporal Shift

Tucked away in Vilamoura, this cosy apartment is an ideal base for exploring all that the Algarve has to offer. As you’d expect with a studio, space is limited here, but you’ll find everything needed for a comfortable stay. While it can sleep three guests, with one on the sofa bed, it’s worth noting that it’s an open space – for this reason, we think it’s better suited to a couple or small family who don’t mind sharing. That said, with Vilamoura beach and golf courses galore nearby, along with the communal pool to cool off in the heat, you’re bound to be out and about most days.

When it comes to soaking up the sunshine, the Algarve never disappoints – and, it has to be said, neither does this home. You can dine alfresco in the garden and cool off in the private pool – although both are slightly overlooked by neighbours. Upstairs, a balcony with lounge chairs is an ideal spot to savour a cocktail. If the weather isn't up to its usual standards, the indoor patio makes a nice escape – we're big fans of the hand-painted tiles and skylight. Another thing we enjoy is the location. You're about ten minutes from Vilamoura's buzzing marina and beaches, with easy access to the rest of the coastline when you fancy adventures further afield.

It’s just 1 kilometre from the soft sand of Praia da Faleisa and 800 metres from Pine Cliffs golf course, so there’s something for everyone. It’s worth noting that two guests will be sleeping on a sofa bed in the living room, where privacy is limited, and that some of the decor is a touch dated.

Just about a kilometre from the nearest sandy beach of Praia do Cavalo Preto, you will find this striking holiday villa in the quintessential Portuguese town of Quarteira. 

We love how this home brings the outside in and, indeed, the inside out – thanks in part to the huge floor-to-ceiling windows that fill the living spaces with light and provide direct access to the garden and its outdoor kitchen with dining table, laid-back seating area, and shaded terraces that are perfect for getting out of the sun and into a good book. 

In the summer months in particular, the carefully designed exterior spaces of the property are all about comfortable outdoor living – and we think you'll be amazed and just how much time you can spend outside when you have all the facilities you could need (not to mention that glorious Portuguese sun blazing triumphantly overhead). 

One of the best bits of this home has got to be that swimming pool. Tiled in a myriad of tiny mosaic tiles, the shades of which span from light turquoise to deep teal and so emulate the colours of the glistening Meditteranean Sea, and offering steps down into its refreshing waters, we think the prospect of a dip is simply too good to resist. Slide into the pool for the perfect morning wake-up call, before drying off in the sun and rejoining everyone else for breakfast to start the day off the right way. 

Does today feel like a beach day? Or perhaps you'd rather amble into Quarteira or the other small towns that dot the hills here to check out some of the cafés, restaurants, and shops. Golfers, rejoice! The fabulous clubs of Val de Lobo, Vilamoura, and Quinto do Lago are just around 5 kilometres away, so you can look forward to teeing off on some of the finest courses the Algarve has to offer. Those with a hankering for unspoilt nature are in luck too, as the Parque Natura da Ria Formosa Nature Reserve is closeby and just waiting to be explored.

Restaurants, shops and bars are also nearby if you fancy a night on the town.

With six luxurious bedrooms, four calm-inspiring bathrooms, an opulent 70s-style living area complete with a retro-feeling full bar and finished in complementary tones of teal and copper, as well as another reception area where you'll find brightly coloured furnishings and cool pop-art style pieces adorning the walls, this home reminds us of a Bond villain's secret bolt-hole. 

Equipped with an array of gadgetry that would give Goldfinger a run for his money, the quirky kitchen boasts countertop grilling stations on a central circular island that looks as though it was lifted straight out of a space station. There is also a funky corner booth that's perfect for sitting down with a cup of coffee and the morning paper. 

Step outside and you'll find a huge garden centred around a stunning swimming pool, given an extra layer of grandeur courtesy of the pillars that surround it on three sides and around which the house wraps itself. With plenty of shaded seating areas as well as sun loungers and an authentic wood-fired churrasco, the garden provides the perfect place to relax and unwind – until it's time to entertain, party, and socialise. It's giving us major 1970s Palm Springs vibes, and we can just imagine the scene being immortalised in a Slim Adams print. 

In a family-friendly neighbourhood by the sea, the home is located 900 metres from the sandy beach of Praia do Cavalo Preto sand beach and a kilometre from the fantastically golden sands of Forte Novo. In the local area, you will have your pick of restaurants serving everything from traditional chicken piri-piri and other regional specialties made with fresh local produce, to Asian fusion, and seafood pulled from the waters around the town.

It’s in the resort of Quinta da Balaia in the centre of the Algarve, a twenty-minute walk from beaches including Santa Eulalia and Oura. There are golf courses nearby, and the hustle and bustle of the city centre is just 1 kilometre away. There’s plenty to see and do in the vicinity, so you’ll be grateful to have such a calm space to return home to. We love the private pool and the alfresco dining setup, which makes spending time together outside a breeze.

Are you looking for an easy seaside getaway right in the thick of Albufeira's action? This smart apartment, perched just 950 metres from the beach and with the bustle of the old town close by, ticks the right boxes. Part of a holiday complex, you'll share a swimming pool and wider grounds. So if you're looking for privacy and seclusion, there might be a better place for you. But with so many amenities on foot and a private balcony for evening drinks, it's a compromise we're happy to make. 

The Albufeira Sun

We absolutely love the feel of this house. Combining authentic Portuguese charm with quirky touches such as the mosaic detailing in the living/dining and the carefully curated collection of colourful art, as soon as you enter you get a real sense of the home's unique identity and can tell how much love and care has been put into the finishing and maintaining of it. 

With three twin bedrooms, one double, and two extra sleeping places in the communal areas of the home, we think it would be ideal for extended family groups or a friends' getaway, whilst its prime location close to the restaurants, bars, and cafés of this part of Albufeira – as well as just 500 metres from the nearest sandy beach – make it a great base for a special holiday in the Algarvian sun. 

Start your day with a dip in the inviting turquoise waters of the swimming pool as the scent of the lemon trees warming in the sun begins to hang heavier in the air, before enjoying a leisurely breakfast on one of the numerous terraces. Perhaps you'll go to the beach, or into town to check out the shops and sample some of the fresh seafood delicacies on offer. Or maybe you'll finally make a dent in that book. No matter how your day pans out, come together in the evening by the traditional wood-fired barbecue to enjoy a homecooked feast of delectable local produce picked up from a local supermarket. 

One of our favourites has got to be the flavourful chicken piri-piri from this region. So why not try to replicate those spicy, savoury flavours before grilling it to perfection –yourself? Though you could always just head down towards the strip and get a taste of the real thing if you've hung up your chef's hat for the week...

In the pleasant market town of Loulé, this apartment is ideal for a family seeking an authentic Algarve escape. The patio was the first thing that caught our eye – with its barbecue, it's perfect for alfresco meals in the shade. Talking of eating, there's also the well-equipped kitchen, and there's plenty of eateries within walking distance too. At capacity, two guests will be using the living area's sofa bed, so space might be a little tight. Luckily, Loulé offers plenty of reasons to be out exploring, and you can take a bus directly to the coast in less than an hour.
