Other attractions, such as the cathedral and marina, are within a ten-minute stroll, too, while the aerobus bus stop for the airport is also within a five-minute saunter.

Back at this apartment, go for a dip in the communal pool to cool off or relax on your private balcony. We adore the vistas over Funchal, the ocean, and the São João Baptista do Pico Fortress – enjoy them from here or indoors with a glass of Madeira. Speaking of, spend afternoons relaxing by the pool or grab a towel and hit the beach – Praia Formosa's pebbly shore is a thirteen-minute walk away. If you're in the mood to do a bit of shopping, Forum Madeira is a twenty-minutes on foot, while the Promenade do Lido is excellent for evening strolls along the water. There are many world-class restaurants, bars, and cafes nearby, but you can always head into Funchal city centre for more options – it's just a seven-minute drive.

Perhaps the centrepiece of this comfortable home is the communal terrace which has its own kitchen and plenty of tables and chairs for al fresco dining – plus a hanging wicker chair that seats two for a more intimate night ‘in’. Your home is the hub for touring the island, with a bus stop right outside, and all of Funchal’s many restaurants, cafes, bars and shops are reachable on foot. Up above the town of Ponta do Sol on Madeira’s south coast, this sugar-cube style apartment embraces traditional architecture on the outside and minimalist modernity inside. The view of Ponta do Sol – a series of orange-roofed buildings tumbling down the hillside to the deep blue sea – is framed by tropical plants, and settling into the beanbag-like chairs on the private terrace is the perfect spot to take it all in. A sparkling rectangle of infinity pool is shared with one other apartment, along with the hillside hot tub. Inside, the walls are kept pristine white without a hint of clutter, and the light-wood kitchen is brightened by sunlight streaming in through a wall of glass. It’s a six-minute walk into the centre of Ponta do Sol where there’s a handful of cafés, bars and restaurants and a local grocery shop. The larger town of Ribeira Brava is a 10-minute drive away.

Between the ancient trees of the Laurissilva Forest and the rolling fields of São Vicente, this home sits within a sprawling vineyard. Tinta Negra and Verdelho grapes grow plump in the sun, ready to be harvested for the island’s famous Madeira wine – you can experience this yourself if you time your visit right. Wandering the grounds you’ll find ancient trees (one oak rumoured to be one of the first trees planted on the island), and stone benches sitting in the shade. Trails through the vines and alongside the river start from just outside your door, and there’s a private yard set up for outdoor dining. As an optional extra, the housekeeper can make you breakfast, homemade bread rolls or the local caldo da romaria soup. The house itself is over 200 years old and maintains an air of tradition inside. The living room is rose-petal pink with floral sofas whispering of yesteryear, while a working fireplace keeps things warm in winter. The 12-seater dining table sits by original stone walls and dark-wood dressers add an old-world Portuguese feel. It’s the kitchen that really embraces the farmhouse vibe – the original bread oven can still be used to bake fresh rolls, and sunlight streams in through wood-shuttered windows. You’re out in the countryside here, but the village of São Vicente is just a 10-minute drive away where you can pick up groceries and sample the local restaurants.
