History buffs will enjoy seeing the Roman ruins at Cetobriga, while golfers might choose to stay closer to home – Troia Golf is a five-minute drive from the villa. You will eventually have to head inside at some point, but you won't be disappointed when you do. The first thing that will strike you is just how bright the interior is, with natural light streaming in through the floor-to-ceiling windows. We also like the emphasis on natural materials in many of the furnishings and decorative items, which feels in keeping with the coastal location.

When you want to pay a visit to the seaside, there are long stretches of golden beaches along the Portuguese coastline that start from as close as 2km away. A little closer to home, you'll find restaurants and bars in the local town of Lagoa Formosa.

It's pretty clear what was at the top of the list for the architect that designed this intriguing home in Comporta – natural light and lots of it. Enormous walls of glass line the sides of the home and the dazzlingly white interior design only accentuates this plentiful natural asset. As you can probably begin to tell, it's a rather relaxing address. There are lots of spots in the tropical garden in which to appreciate the local tranquillity, whether on the back of a lounger or while dining alfresco on the table. Whenever the temperature takes a dip, you can head back inside and cosy up next to the contemporary fireplace in the lounge.

When it comes to seeing a little more of the locale, there are vast swathes of golden beaches covering the Portuguese coastline that start from as close as 1.5km away, while the nearest town is only 2km away for when you're in need of restaurants and shops.
