Steps from the apartment is the riverfront, where Porto’s famous wine cellars line the banks, and walking the narrow streets of the neighbourhood you’ll find delights like Palacio Bolta three minutes away, and Mercado Ferreira Borges five minutes on foot. The first thing you’ll notice, stepping into the apartment, is the view directly over the Douro River from the wall of big windows in the living room. Wooden shutters add a touch of tradition, and the darkwood dressers and artfully faded Moroccan rugs are in keeping with the building’s history. Hardwood floors lead from the living room, to the compact kitchen in an alcove and through to the bright bedroom where the exposed stone and big sash window motif continues.

If you want to explore the rest of the city, São Bento train station is five minutes on foot. Just remember to bring you're walking shoes, as this home is on a bit of a hill and the apartment is on the first floor, with no lift (there are two flights of stairs to reach the door). But you are rewarded with views of the city's cathedral once you've arrived – take in the vistas from the private balcony. Located only a few minutes from the Clérigos Tower, On The Lookout's rooftop terrace offers a rival view to the Cathedral and downtown architecture. The insides of this home are equally impressive, with a welcoming communal area all dressed in wood. The rustic touches are added in the form of forest animal prints, which adds to the warm ambiance in every room. The terrace is only accessible via the upstairs bedroom, but if that's not too much of an inconvenience, then you're cordially invited to experience the view (and the comfort) for yourself.

This tranquil apartment is a true haven away from the hustle and bustle of Porto. There are several things we love about this home. First of all, it's housed in a gorgeous refurbished 19th-century building that used to belong to a commander from the 1800s. The second reason is for its Harry Potter connections – the house opposite is where JK Rowling lived during her time in Porto. It’s said she wrote the first three chapters of the book Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone there. 

Third, but by no means least, is the sunny, large courtyard garden with its rocking chair, barbecue, sofa and dining table, which is the real highlight of this home. It's filled with roses, geraniums, and a lemon tree – it's the perfect place to gather with your family or friends. 

Inside, there are plenty of character features such as exposed stone walls, beams, shutters and traditional tiles. Whip up some bacalhau à Gomes de Sá (cod casserole) in the kitchen and enjoy it at the huge wooden table.

Out and about, there's plenty to see in this enchanting city. Jardim de São Lázaro, Lisbon's oldest municipal park, is a four-minute stroll, while the Via Catarina Shopping Mall is eight minutes on foot. Now updated to house families itching to explore this UNESCO World Heritage City, it's comfortable – though the two bedrooms with the sloped ceilings might be better for kids – and bright with a fantastic location. Walk to Porto Cathedral and other landmarks in minutes, buy fresh produce from the Bolhão market only a short stroll away, and hop on the trams to find points of interest further afield.

With a fabulous address in downtown Porto, right in the heart of the city, you’ll find this apartment is near a load of attractions. Points of interest include the Mercado do Bolhão and the Tower and Church of Clérigos, as well as several parks.

Back at this home, sit in the sun on the private balcony with a glass of Port or a drink of your choice and take in the views over Porto. You can see the two spires of the Church of Our Lady of Lapa just above the rooftops from here. Or head inside and read a book on the custard yellow sofa in the light-filled living space. Situated in the charming Ribeiro neighbourhood, a three-minute walk from the neoclassical Palácio da Bolsa and within touching distance of old-school restaurants serving traditional Portuguese fare, this modern and bright apartment is a great base for exploring all that Porto has to offer.

We loved the light-filled living space, with its huge floor-to-ceiling windows and double-height ceilings. A dining table takes centre stage, encouraging lively breakfasts in the morning and hearty suppers in the evening. There’s also a cosy mezzanine level that is the perfect spot for reclining with a glass of wine before retreating to sumptuous bedrooms for an early night. 

Slip into the narrow cobbled streets and begin your sightseeing adventure. The 12th-century Porto Cathedral is six minutes from your doorstep and the Igreja dos Clérigos with its 75-metre-tall bell tower is reached in less than ten. When it’s time to call it a day, make a beeline for the Vitória viewpoint to watch dusk fall across the city.

Guests rave about the location of this Porto apartment, and it’s easy to see why. Set in a quiet corner of Ribeira, the Douro River, Praça da Ribeira Square, and neoclassical Bolsa Palace are all just a short stroll away. It’s worth noting if six guests share, two of you will have to make do with a double sofa bed in the living space. Not ideal for some, but it could work great for family sharing. The small inner courtyard is a nice touch for sundowners, and there’s plenty of space to spill out around the dining table for lazy breakfasts of pastel de natas picked up from the nearby bakeries.

Have an amble around the district marvelling at the UNESCO-listed eighteenth-century buildings, or head to Porto Cathedral, a twelve-minute saunter. For fresh produce, Mercado do Bolhão is a mere two-minute wander – pick up some local delicacies to take back to this home. Much like Porto itself, this abode blends the historic with modern design for a stay that pops. It's not the street art or hand-painted tiles you might expect of a Portuguese apartment. Instead, this home adheres to the Scandi-chic minimalist vibe, offering a sanctuary from the hustle and bustle of the city's streets. Inside, the open-plan living space is welcoming and calm with checkerboard floors, white walls and stylish furnishings. Large balcony doors not only flood the home with natural light, but extend the communal area out to a private terrace – perfect for morning pastel de natas or evening churros. Rustle up breakfast in the contemporary, marble kitchen and sit down for convivial meals at the window-side dining table for eight. 

We especially love the attention to detail here, with objets d'art and chic art prints adorning the bookshelves and walls. It's both minimalist and yet there's a cool and creative feel to the space, reflecting Bonfirm's young, hip crowd. Practically the home ticks all the right boxes, with four comfy bedrooms, each with direct balcony access, and there's a dedicated office space for those visiting on business. 

Location-wise, it's a great spot for those in town for sightseeing, with Santa Catarina Street, Bolhão, and Avenida dos Aliados all a short walk from your doorstep. And when it's time for dinner, there's no better place for a romantic meal or late-evening stroll than along Cais da Ribeira, within walking distance of the apartment.

Set upriver from Porto in the small town of Valbom, while you can reach the medieval hotspots of Riberia on foot (forty-five minutes), it's just as easy to hop in a taxi. Or charter a private boat to arrive at Porto's Cais da Ribeira waterfront in style – the apartment shares a private docking, don't you know.

Situated within walking distance of Porto’s must-visit sights, this apartment is the perfect base for a family or group of friends. Should you want to sample the city’s gastronomic scene, there is no shortage of restaurants on the doorstep. Inside the home, it’s simple yet well-appointed and quiet – thanks to the soundproof windows. Each bedroom is comfortable, and though the third does lack some homely touches, it’s still a pleasant enough space to get some shut-eye at the end of a busy day.

Situated near Sé do Porto and Bolsa Palace, this is an excellent base for those who want to explore the city’s cultural hotspots and restaurants. The apartment is simple and functional, with a balcony for sipping sundowners after a day along the Douro River (speak to your host to arrange a tour). While a great choice for those visiting on business, your host can also provide a cot and high chair for little ones, and there’s a sofa bed that could comfortably accommodate two extra guests.

Poetry & Porto

You're sure to be instantly enchanted by the blue-tiled facade of this historic building – we know we were – and that traditional charm continues inside. Follow the winding staircase up to the third floor and you'll find a cosy, light-filled apartment waiting for you. Apple red French doors open onto the sweet balcony, which grants you sweeping views across Porto's rooftops and more of that pretty Portuguese tile. It's the perfect spot to indulge in an alfresco breakfast or savour a glass of vinho verde as the sun goes down – if you're anything like us, you'll spend every spare second out here, drinking in the scenery. Although the kitchenette is compact and the bathroom is on the smaller side, we didn't mind – there's still a good amount of space to get comfortable, and the minimal, boho-chic design is a palate cleanser after a busy day exploring.

Speaking of, this neighbourhood is a trendy area full of independent bars, cafes, and restaurants. You'll find plenty of charming squares nearby to have a drink in, and several of Porto's main attractions are within walking distance – namely Clérigos Tower (twelve minutes on foot), Livraria Lello bookstore (a ten-minute stroll) and the Cais da Ribeira (twenty-five minutes away). If sightseeing, shopping and dining are on your to-do list, we think this is the ideal locale for you.

Few places in Porto can outshine this home's location. Positioned just north of the historic centre, it sits next to what is undoubtedly one of the city's most iconic landmarks, the Clérigos Tower. Standing at 75 metres in height, this elaborate Baroque masterpiece is not only a steadfast component of Porto's skyline but also the tallest campanile in Portugal. Ascend its two-hundred-and-twenty-five steps and be rewarded with sweeping panoramas across the city's terracotta-tiled rooftops and out towards the endless blue of the Atlantic Ocean.

A rosy-hued Pombaline façade provides the framework for this home, exuding authentic charm from the outset. Perched up high on the third floor, it's delightfully peaceful and boasts a unique vantage point of Porto's cityscape, including the nearby Jardim das Oliveiras. Though compact, the interior feels spacious and inviting thanks to a trio of large windows, ushering in floods of natural light, and a thoughtfully considered open-plan layout. The décor is contemporary with a stylish mid-century-inspired quality, and we especially love the kitchen, fully equipped with home chefs in mind. We had to break from doing some serious shopping to tell you about this Porto gem. This elegant apartment, housed in a recently renovated 20th-century building, is located right in the heart of the pedestrianised retail hub of Rua Santa Catarina. For fresh produce and a vibrant atmosphere, head to Mercado do Bolhão, a three-minute walk away. It's not all about shopping, though – the Chapel of Souls is a two-minute walk away, where you'll discover its beautiful azulejo tiled façade. Or take a break in the Café Majestic, a beautiful Art Nouveau café, a five-minute walk from this home. A little further, Porto Cathedral is fourteen minutes on foot. Then stop off at the small port wine shop opposite this home and take some back to this apartment.

Inside, there are furnishings from Portuguese designers and artists. Lots of large windows allow light to flood in. We adore the spacious open plan living space with its two French doors, which open onto a small balustraded balcony overlooking the street. Off the bedroom, there's a secluded terrace too, perfect for a coffee or glass of Port. Later, chill out on the mezzanine level or have a game of chess. There's plenty of room for a family or friends to spread out here. If you prefer to eat in, whip up a bacalhau à Gomes (cod casserole) in the modern kitchen and enjoy it at your dining table. Honestly, though, you probably won't be spending that much time indoors with so much on your doorstep.

Bright and welcoming, this studio apartment is an ideal base for two in Porto. You’ll be in the heart of the city, just a five-minute walk from Coliseu do Porto and within easy reach of Clerigos Tower. For further-afield sights, you need only walk 400 metres to Bolhão Station to hop on the metro. The apartment is petite but charming, with a beautiful carved ceiling that draws the eye. The kitchen facilities are limited, but you’ll have your pick of Porto’s best restaurants and bars on your doorstep.

Sitting just a short walk from Alfândega and the Douro River, this duplex apartment is a convenient base for a group of friends or family. You’ll need to climb some stairs to reach this second-floor apartment, so keep that in mind. The third bedroom lacks some privacy, though the sliding doors allow you to partition it off from the living area. And while the dining room doesn’t accommodate all six guests, you'll find plenty of casual eateries, bars and cafes on your doorstep. Location-wise, Porto’s iconic sights, including Bolsa Palace, the Miradouro da Vitória and Mosteiro de São Bento da Vitória are within easy reach.

From its enviable position in the centre of Porto, this stylish yet functional apartment is an excellent choice for families and groups of friends alike. The open-plan living space is perfectly proportioned, with enough room for entertaining your loved ones or enjoying a quiet moment with a cup of coffee. We had a particular soft spot for the individually designed bedrooms and we loved the kitchen’s handy serving hatch.

When you’re ready to explore your surroundings. Begin with a trip to Porto Cathedral, just a short walk from your building. Or why not head down to the water? Amble alongside the Duoro River with an ice cream in hand before watching the world pass by in a charming cafe. In the early evening, we recommend watching the sunset from the nearby Miradouro da Rua das Aldas viewpoint.
