This villa sits just 450 metres from the soft sands of Praia Grande – beach-lovers, this one’s for you. When you’re not at the beach, you’ll appreciate the wonderful sea views from beside your private pool. There’s an alfresco dining area, too – perfect for sunset cocktails and dinner. Inside, the villa is warm and welcoming, though some of the bathrooms are a little dated. Little ones will love sharing the kids’ room – with its bunk beds and trundles, it feels like being at camp.

Close to nearby shops and restaurants while set in miles of trees for total relaxation, this stylish home is the perfect base to explore the west coast of Portugal. You’ll find the nearest beach 2 kilometres away while we recommend hiring a car to explore the area further – the enchanting town of Sintra is picture-worthy while Cascais is great for a more cosmopolitan feel. Golf lovers will appreciate the number of courses nearby (six to be exact) offering panoramic views over the Sintra mountain range and renowned to be some of the best golf courses in Portugal.

This lovely Portuguese villa provides an idyllic spot to spend a holiday with your loved ones. The home boasts some great amenities, including a garden, complete with orchard and little stream, firewood oven and a private pool. But that's not all. It’s worth noting some of the furnishings are a little dated, but you will find plenty of space across the main house and the independent guest house – a great option for those in search of a little extra privacy.

Sitting pretty moments from Praia Grande, this beachfront villa is a sun worshipper's dream. And not only is it close to the Atlantic, but there's also a private pool with panoramic views. With ample seating, including an alfresco dining table, your outlook will be nature-focused here. Though the interior is traditional rather than sleek, we love how homely it feels. We think it works especially well for families who'd like to split into smaller groups – the two self-contained apartments and a separate bungalow can make that happen. With a tick on location, daily cleaning included, and the possibility for events, you can see why this one caught our eye.

Skirting the edge of the Sintra Cascais Natural Park, this house is wedged between the mountainous landscapes of the park and Guincho Beach. Perfect for sun and nature worshippers, the villa is ideal for large groups of friends or a family reunion. With plenty of room, bedrooms with their own private bathrooms, and even a gym, it carves out elegant spaces for everyone to holiday as they please. The views from the private swimming pool are beautiful. Plus, there's ample seating for sunset drinks. Daily cleaning and breakfasts are also included here so you can focus on what matters – taking it easy.

Modern and practical, this home suits a family keen to explore Sintra and the Portuguese coast. It's contemporary inside and out – although it lacks a few cosier touches, it's awash in natural light. The second bedroom is snug and features a pull-out trundle ideal for children. But the garden is a nice bonus, with a private swimming pool, playground, and views across the countryside. Location-wise, this home sits just outside Colares. Head west, and you'll hit Praia da Adraga. Or, drive east to visit Sintra's magical palaces and colourful castles.

The sweeping views from this home have to be seen to be believed. It sits amid lush countryside in Colares in a spectacularly scenic spot. The views can be admired from the beautiful garden, which has countless cosy corners to sit in, as well as a stone table for alfresco dining, and sun loungers – sun-seekers will be content here. The house is full of charm, decorated in pretty hues and with stunning Portuguese tiles throughout. You’ll be close to the coast, with Praia da Adraga a few minutes away by car.

Prepare to have your breath taken away at this stunning coastal home, a six-minute drive from the town of Colares. In an elevated position, it's been designed to make the most of its epic sea views. Between its excellent amenities and the beach a short walk away, you'll be set up for a wonderful and relaxing stay. Start by taking a dip in one of your two pools – the infinity pool has spectacular views – and later move on to a game of football or tennis in your private court. Cook indoors or use the summer kitchen outside, barbecue some local fish and enjoy meals late into the night on the impressive terrace. We love the lived-in feel here, with eclectic art and comfortable furnishings. Many of the rooms have distractingly good views – none more so than the bedrooms on the top floor, where you can step out onto a balcony each morning and look out to sea. And youngsters are far from forgotten either. There's a play area indoors, with all sorts of toys and games, and outside you'll find a grassed playground. Grab your buckets and spades and there's a choice of beaches within a twenty-minute drive, along with beachside restaurants and bars.

This rather impressive villa has fabulous views of the Atlantic Ocean, giving it an air of absolute tranquility. You can truly embrace indoor-outdoor living here, with huge windows and sliding glass doors making it easy to slip seamlessly from the terrace to the indoor lounge. There are plenty of rustic touches to enchant you, from the wood-burning stove to the long, antique table and even a set of traditional weighing scales in the hallway. Make a splash in your very own swimming pool, or simply lounge in the sunshine with your favourite cocktail until it's dinner time. Then, throw some tasty local produce on the grill and gather on the patio for an alfresco feast as you watch the sun go down over the water – the sunsets here are simply magical. The beach is also within easy reach, with Praia Grande a five-minute walk away, where you can try your hand at surfing or simply chill out on the sand. Plus, the local winery at Colares is only a ten-minute drive away, while Lisbon is forty minutes away by car – so, when it comes to day trips you're spoilt for choice.
