You’ll love taking your morning coffee at the breakfast bar in the open-plan living area before stepping out into the garden. Bagsy one of the loungers and get stuck into your holiday read while topping up your tan on the poolside patio. You’ll be treated to countryside and even sea views from here. Feel revived with a refreshing dip in your private, outdoor pool before sauntering over to the barbecue area. Gorge on Portuguese eats while sat around the wooden dining table on the covered terrace.

If you fancy amping up the luxe factor, why not indulge in an at-home massage? Believe it or not, you’ll also be able to enjoy the services of a beautician and a private chef. This restored farmhouse sits in the nature-rich Portuguese region of Minho, encircled by valleys, sparkling rivers, plenty of cycling routes, and historical towns. You get a beautiful slice of that breathtaking nature from your countryside oasis. 

Whether you’re playing football on the soft grass, admiring the view from the terrace, or listening to the birds chatter while lying around the pool, nature is all around. You’re even welcomed by bougainvillea and cypress trees as you approach the stone brick home.

You’ll first notice the home’s traditional façade. Made up of three houses, two of which have long histories – the main house was a baker's, and the annexe, now a games room, was a distillery. Make use of the original bread and pizza oven for unforgettable meals, and whittle away evenings playing pool and drinking local wine. 

There’s plenty to keep you entertained here, but perhaps all you really want is to catch up on your book beside the pool. Let the hours drift by, breathing in the fresh country air while topping up your tan. Come dusk, the place to be is your balcony – nothing beats watching the sun dip into the sea. 

When it’s time to explore, you’re less than a mile from Afife and its beachy cafes, surf shops, seafood restaurants, and long stretch of sugary white sand. When you’re not catching waves or relaxing on the beach, hop on a hiking trail to one of the nearby waterfalls and discover the rugged mountain range.

Located in the quiet village of Chafe – just five minutes from the beach – this home boasts a tranquil setting surrounded by delightful views.  A swimming pool with a jacuzzi and waterfall feature is perhaps the home’s crowning glory, however, and it would truly tempt us never to leave the villa. If you do choose to head out, however, there is plenty on offer including the jewel of Costa Verde, Viana do Castelo – a city with a medieval centre, an attractive riverfront and gorgeous beaches. 

In the evening, this home offers unique indoor-outdoor living, with a fantastic lounge and dining space with two walls of glass that can be opened up for alfresco dining. Then, why not plunge back into the soothing bubbles of the pool before ending the night, warming around the sunken firepit with a cocktail in hand?

These two stone farmhouses provide a rural haven in the heart of the Minho hills. The home is set on a 210-acre wine estate – you'll have nothing to disturb you here but the odd worker roaming the fields and vineyards. Inside, the traditional features may not be to everyone's taste, but if you ask us, the outside area is by far the home's biggest draw. From the dining terrace to the private swimming pool and garden, you'll have ample space to bask in the Portuguese sunshine and remote setting. A car is a necessity here, but the charming towns of Ponte de Lima and Viana do Castelo are both a short drive away.

Needless to say then, this home is the perfect retreat for families looking for a little seclusion. Bask in the peace and quiet as you wander the grounds amidst trees, feeling the lush grass between your toes as you go in search of the shaded vegetable garden. Spend entire mornings simply soaking up the sun poolside and when it gets a bit hot, slip into the crystal clear waters for a lazy paddle. 

Indoors you’ll find a combination of rustic comfort and more modern touches. The small breakfast nook by the large kitchen window is another real highlight of the home  – sit there first thing in the morning sipping your coffee to a scenic backdrop.

It’s a short distance to the powdery sands of Praia de Afife, the border between Spain’s Galicia, the adventure-packed rivers of the Rio Lima estuary and the countryside hiking trails in the Lima valley.

Inside, the space is dominated by an expansive, wooden-beamed living area where you’ll find an elegant dining table for sharing bacalhau fish stew dinners and a contemporary lounge boasting ambient lighting for cosy nights in sharing aperitifs. The sleek kitchen has plenty of prep space, courtesy of a glossy island, which keeps the space social. A second dining room leads off the kitchen and out onto the patio – we’ll be honest, this one’s our favourite – perfect for alfresco dinners together under pink-hued sunsets.

Staying outside, there are plenty of spaces for every member to unwind. The patio is decked out with lounge chairs, perfect for soaking up the sun before plunging into the pristine pool for a cooling dip. We have to say we think the garden is the ideal spot to begin mornings over fresh coffee and locally bought pastéis de nata and to end evenings with caipirinha cocktails under the starlit sky.
