We love the views over the River Douro and Porto from this home's terrace. The home may be petite, but the clever layout really maximises the space available. Step inside, and you'll find a sleek kitchen where you can whip up your favourite dishes to enjoy at the cute round table as sunlight streams in through the window. The first thing you’ll notice, stepping into the apartment, is the view directly over the Douro River from the wall of big windows in the living room. Wooden shutters add a touch of tradition, and the darkwood dressers and artfully faded Moroccan rugs are in keeping with the building’s history. Just remember to bring you're walking shoes, as this home is on a bit of a hill and the apartment is on the first floor, with no lift (there are two flights of stairs to reach the door). But you are rewarded with views of the city's cathedral once you've arrived – take in the vistas from the private balcony. Inside, we love the vaulted ceilings, which add character to this modern home.

Porto Haven

This home nearly feels like staying on a boat – what with the large French doors opening directly onto the Douro River. Whether you’re sat on the sofa or enjoying a coffee at the dining table, you’ll have sweeping views of the water and the city. The windows’ second benefit is the sheer amount of light the living space gets, bathing the tasteful furniture in the warm sun. We could spend hours with a book in the armchair, taking in the sea air as the day grows to a peak. But of course, this central location leaves much to be explored. You can wander along the riverfront’s picturesque fishing neighbourhoods, hopping on the 1930s tram that runs to Foz. Or, board on a boat that will take you to the famous terraced Douro vineyards to sample Vinho Verde and Port. You’ll be walking distance from beautiful historic buildings, located in one of the quietest streets of Ribeira, and only a thirteen-minute walk from São Bento Railway Station – which will connect you all over the city.

Inside, it's a smart, functional space for your group to spread out, and there's a sofa bed for a fifth guest. The kitchen is compact yet fully equipped for home-cooked dinners, while the enclosed balcony is a nice place to toast the day's end. Just note that you'll need to climb stairs to reach the entrance of this home. 

Porto Spice

Calling all oenophiles. This Porto apartment is situated in the city's historic wine quarter. You'll be a stone's throw from the underground cellars and local restaurants that characterise this neighbourhood and just a quick metro ride from landmarks like the Clérigos Tower and the Ribeira. The building is over 100 years old – it certainly doesn't lack charm. We adore the hand-painted blue tiles on the exterior, while inside, neoclassical windows flood the living space with sunlight and quaint Juliet balconies offer views towards the centre. It's not the largest pad and the kitchen is pretty compact, but with a desk for remote working and two cosy bedrooms, we think it'll do nicely for a Porto getaway.

Sun-Kissed Wine

Set on the elegant Rua das Flores, this gorgeous two-bedroom flat offers you the perfect base to explore central Porto. Located up on the fourth floor, you'll enjoy breathtaking vistas over the neighbourhood rooftops towards Porto's Romanesque cathedral.

Inside, the main open-plan living space offers more than enough space for four to unwind, dine and socialise in comfort. A large corner sofa is set right by the French doors. On warm days, you can open them up to the outside world and let the city atmosphere float in on the breeze. Elsewhere, there's a four-seater dining table and a well-equipped kitchenette.

Both bedrooms are decorated in similarly neutral tones, with ample storage so you can unpack your bags and settle right in. The main bedroom elevates its offering with an en-suite shower room and Juliette balcony that lets in plenty of natural light.

Down at street level, the pedestrianised Rua das Flores is lined with traditional restaurants and independent shops that occupy the ground floor of historic buildings adorned with azulejo tiles and ornate wrought-iron balconies. Not only does it place you right in the heart of action, but you're also close to some of Porto's most majestic sights, including Sé do Porto and the Palácio da Bolsa – both no more than a five-minute walk – and the waterside Cais da Ribeira, a ten-minute stroll away.

We had a particular soft spot for the individually designed bedrooms and we loved the kitchen’s handy serving hatch.

When you’re ready to explore your surroundings. Begin with a trip to Porto Cathedral, just a short walk from your building. Or why not head down to the water? Amble alongside the Duoro River with an ice cream in hand before watching the world pass by in a charming cafe. In the early evening, we recommend watching the sunset from the nearby Miradouro da Rua das Aldas viewpoint. 

Peach & Emerald

Combining original elements with modern upside-down living, this apartment is an ideal base for those couples or families of three looking to experience the enchanting heart of the city. Boasting a long, double-height living area with a wonderfully bright and open layout, you'll find it easy to come back and relax after days of sightseeing in Porto. 

We love the enticing space with oak floors, wood beams, and exposed stone walls which make the design feel reassuringly rustic, and yet the contemporary decor adds plenty of modern comforts. The sociable open-plan layout invites chefs of the group to whip up feasts in the kitchen while chatting with others around the dining table or unwinding on the sofa. 

When you’re ready to venture out for some sightseeing, make a beeline for the Church of Saint Ildefonso or the Livraria Lello bookshop nearby, before sauntering a little further on to the Porto Cathedral and the bustling city centre. Ascend its two-hundred-and-twenty-five steps and be rewarded with sweeping panoramas across the city's terracotta-tiled rooftops and out towards the endless blue of the Atlantic Ocean.

A rosy-hued Pombaline façade provides the framework for this home, exuding authentic charm from the outset. Perched up high on the third floor, it's delightfully peaceful and boasts a unique vantage point of Porto's cityscape, including the nearby Jardim das Oliveiras. Though compact, the interior feels spacious and inviting thanks to a trio of large windows, ushering in floods of natural light, and a thoughtfully considered open-plan layout. The décor is contemporary with a stylish mid-century-inspired quality, and we especially love the kitchen, fully equipped with home chefs in mind. Spend mornings roosted at the spacious dining table, tucking into coffee and pastries before slipping out to explore.

Forty-Nine Bells

Despite this apartment's historical past, as it was once home to an old pharmacy, it now serves beautifully as a contemporary apartment – ideal for a short visit to the charming city of Porto. Dressed in elegantly simple designs, the apartment presents a neutral colour scheme with occasional traditional Portuguese elements creating a comfortable set-up for a couple, solo traveller or two friends. 

You'll have the option of rustling up your own meals here in the compact kitchenette space, or why not head out to enjoy some local Porto delicacies within easy reach? After all, this central spot is within easy walking distance of Porto's wine cellars, fabulous eateries and the city's stunning tiled architecture. 



The Old Pharmacy 

Found in one of the oldest residential buildings in Porto, this apartment might not look 200 years old thanks to modernisation, but it remains historic. Now updated to house families itching to explore this UNESCO World Heritage City, it's comfortable – though the two bedrooms with the sloped ceilings might be better for kids – and bright with a fantastic location. Walk to Porto Cathedral and other landmarks in minutes, buy fresh produce from the Bolhão market only a short stroll away, and hop on the trams to find points of interest further afield.

Sometimes a home makes such an impression on us that we’re willing to look past a few flaws, simply because the rest is worth it. Ruby Port is one such home. Honestly, the maintenance needs a bit of work, and the terraces need tidying up, but the place is just so special. From the spectacular views of the Douro River to the beautiful azulejo tiles and the stone fireplace, it has a distinct soul and Porto charm that we simply can't get enough of – it feels like the kind of place we could spend a long time in. Whether you're drinking a chilled glass of Porto wine from the spacious terrace, taking a dip in the private pool or even washing up in the shower, you'll be able to appreciate the lovely views over the water. Inside, light pours in through the patio doors, creating a bright and airy living space to relax. Full of cream furnishings and neutral tones, it's a homely apartment too. Step outside of the building and be in the heart of Porto, and yet you'll find the immediate neighbourhood is quiet and friendly. Walk to the Jardins do Palácio de Cristal and Museum Soares dos Reis in under ten minutes. Come evening, there's a dazzling array of family-run eateries and hidden bars to discover, just wander down the charming backstreets and see for yourself. 

Ruby Port

Situated right where the River Douro meets the Atlantic Ocean, this stylish apartment offers spectacular views and plenty of living space. Two balconies grant you the opportunity to relax in the sun – the one off the main bedroom is perfect for morning cups of coffee, while the downstairs balcony is ideal for cocktails as the evening draws to a close. Floor-to-ceiling windows show off the scenery all day long, a sleek kitchen makes rustling up meals a breeze and a cosy sofa is a perfect spot to kick back and relax after a busy day exploring. Our favourite room is the main bedroom. As well as the private balcony, it has all the bells and whistles you'd want – blackout blinds, built-in Bluetooth speakers and a lavish rainfall shower in the en-suite. 

When you're ready to explore, both the 1 and 18 trams run right past the home, so you'll have no problem getting to and from Porto's bustling city centre. That said, Foz do Douro isn't lacking in activities, either. Sprawl out on the miles of sandy beaches (Praia das Pastoras is a fifteen-minute walk away), grab dinner and drinks at one of the waterfront restaurants or just stroll along the river, admiring the many landmarks, lighthouses and sculptures representing Portugal's rich history.

Laid out around a beautiful central terrace, floor-to-ceiling windows allow ample natural light to shine through, giving you endless sunshine, inside and out. Curated in a contemporary style, the decor is understated yet thoughtfully brought together to make the most out of this sparkling space. We love the main bedroom’s French doors that lead out onto the sunny terrace – the ideal spot for alfresco breakfasts and celebratory sundowners – as well as the second bedroom’s large windows that give way to a stone-walled courtyard dotted with leafy plants. 
 
Factor in the Porto-inspired art on the walls as well as the sleek en-suites, and you’ve got everything you need for a relaxing stay. 
 
Outside of your home, you’ve got plenty to see and do within easy walking distance, including Porto Cathedral (thirteen minutes), Livraria Lello (fifteen minutes), Rua Santa Catarina (seven minutes) and the waterfront Cais da Ribeira (eighteen minutes). 


Playful Light

Situated within walking distance of Porto’s must-visit sights, this apartment is the perfect base for a family or group of friends. Should you want to sample the city’s gastronomic scene, there is no shortage of restaurants on the doorstep. Each bedroom is comfortable, and though the third does lack some homely touches, it’s still a pleasant enough space to get some shut-eye at the end of a busy day.

We loved the light-filled living space, with its huge floor-to-ceiling windows and double-height ceilings. A dining table takes centre stage, encouraging lively breakfasts in the morning and hearty suppers in the evening. There’s also a cosy mezzanine level that is the perfect spot for reclining with a glass of wine before retreating to sumptuous bedrooms for an early night. 

Slip into the narrow cobbled streets and begin your sightseeing adventure. The 12th-century Porto Cathedral is six minutes from your doorstep and the Igreja dos Clérigos with its 75-metre-tall bell tower is reached in less than ten. When it’s time to call it a day, make a beeline for the Vitória viewpoint to watch dusk fall across the city.

Luís I Bridge is five-minutes on foot. There are many restaurants, food stores and cafes within two minutes' walking distance from this home, too. Or head to the nearby Cais de Gaia, the pedestrian promenade on the Douro river – it's lovely for a wander – take some photos along the way. 

This apartment is housed in a historical building, which was once a traditional pharmacy – the pharmacy's name is still on the façade, actually, a detail we love. Inside the studio itself, you'll find a modern kitchen – make a francesinha sandwich after a busy day of exploring or relax on the comfy bed with its exposed stone backdrop. We think this home is the ideal bolthole for leisure or business travellers alike.

If you’re feeling up to it, go for a long, leisurely walk along the coast to reach the chapel of Senhor da Pedra – just over an hour away on foot – which dates back to the seventeenth century. Or, hop in the car and head to Porto – a twenty-minute drive away – where you will find many well-known sights including the Cathedral and the world-famous bookshop, Livraria Lello. 

In the evening, however, you won’t need to go far from home to find great restaurants which are reachable in as little as five minutes on foot, or supermarkets for food shopping if you’d rather cook at home. We would love to end each day here with a glass of Port wine on the balcony to enjoy the last of the views as the sun sets and night descends.

Being a studio flat, you won't find much space here, but with that location, we think you'll be outside more often than not.

Along the charming cobbled streets of Porto’s Baixa neighbourhood sits Rustic Tawny, a small but beautifully curated studio apartment. Boasting pastoral architectural features in combination with minimalist interiors, we were not only impressed with the sleek look but more importantly, the comfort provided. On top of that, you’ll be staying in a fabulous location, especially if you’ve never been to Porto before. You're right by the city centre and close to the most important tourist attractions. Of course, it wouldn't be Porto if wonderful cafes didn't also line the streets.

Rustic Tawny

Between two beautiful parks – Jardim da Cordoaria and Jardim das Virtudes – and set in a pretty period building, this studio home is quite the little charmer. With high ceilings and stripped-back woodwork to its trio of Juliet balcony windows, it's full of character, and its recent refurbishment has added a big helping of modern styling and clever design. 

There's a bespoke kitchen packed with everything you'll need for cooking at home, along with a comfy sofa, a little dining area and even a desk. And while this is a studio, the addition of a sleeping platform up a few steps divides the space neatly – creating storage beneath. Step out of bed and straight into your in-room rainfall shower, before making a cup of coffee and opening up the shutters to gaze across at the park.

With wine bars and cafes on your street, you won't have to go far for a true taste of Porto, and the riverside is just a ten-minute walk.



The Shuttersmith

Guests rave about the location of this Porto apartment, and it’s easy to see why. Set in a quiet corner of Ribeira, the Douro River, Praça da Ribeira Square, and neoclassical Bolsa Palace are all just a short stroll away. It’s worth noting if six guests share, two of you will have to make do with a double sofa bed in the living space. Not ideal for some, but it could work great for family sharing. The small inner courtyard is a nice touch for sundowners, and there’s plenty of space to spill out around the dining table for lazy breakfasts of pastel de natas picked up from the nearby bakeries.

For further afield attractions, you can hop on the metro at Heroísmo station, a 140-metre walk away. The apartment is close to restaurants and cafes, as well as some excellent pastry shops – you’ll never be too far from your next pastel de nata. We love the simplicity of this attractive home, with its petite balcony and open-plan living and dining space. It’s a great choice for a large group.

The walls are made from stone, lit up by the daylight that pours in through the large windows in the living space.
