Doritina’s done the place up with a lot of soul, and her hosting really shines through in both the design and the service. She’s very friendly, and always happy to give some tips and recommendations for the local area. Of course, the big attraction is the lake, and all the outdoor activities that come with it. Whether you’re tempted by kayaking, fishing or hiking, there’s something for you. And if you’ve tired yourself out, the home itself is a wonderful place to while away the evenings, with a stone fireplace, Netflix, and plenty of blankets and pillows to curl up in.

A hilltop cabin in a unique area of the desert, this place is nestled on its own between Pioneertown and Yucca Valley on what feels like the scenic drive through Joshua Tree National Park. The trees, rocks, and landscape just outside the doors are just as breathtaking as anything you would see in the park, except you have them all to yourself. 

There’s a wood-burning stove to keep you warm on those chill nights, while one of your musically talented friends can play a tune on the grand piano (though there’s also a Bluetooth sound system, for convenience). On the walls, you’ll find original art by the late Gerald Zeldin, and an interior so impressive it was featured in the NY Times fashion section. You can feel the history of this old mining cabin in the wood-beamed ceiling and clapboard (yet modern)  bathroom. Picture-frame windows let the sunlight stream into this boho-chic interior and let you gaze out over the endless desert before you.

This place is totally off-grid and once you’ve experienced the unique feeling of heating the outdoor hot tub with firewood as you gaze at the stars, there’s no going back.

If the interiors of this minimalist home appear to have jumped straight out of the pages of a glossy magazine, you’re not far off. This home, designed by Palmer and Kriesel is hidden away in a Palm Springs cul-de-sac and has previously graced the pages of the New York Times. Homage to all things mid-century, with Eames chairs, Nelson lamps and a vintage Malm fireplace in the master bedroom.

We were wowed by the open living area, designed with socialising in mind and with great views of the backyard. Out in the garden, reclining by the shimmering turquoise pool is the perfect way to unwind, but if you need to take your relaxing to the next level, there’s also a hot tub to bubble the night away in. Dine alfresco under the endless desert sky, then end the evening around the flickering fire pit with a glass of something strong as the sun sets behind the mountains.

When you want to venture out, downtown Palm Springs is only a five-minute drive away, and Joshua Tree National Park, roughly an hour away, is a must-see for hikers and nature enthusiasts. Visit The Palm Springs Art Museum, an eight-minute drive away which features complex sculptures, glassworks, and photographs by renowned artists such as Andy Warhol and Diane Arbus.

Set on the edge of the Joshua Tree National Park, guests take the lead in operating this clean yet luxurious off-grid space. Think serious stargazing sessions through a telescope, showering by a boulder, and falling asleep under the desert sky with a crackling fireplace at your feet—the second bedroom is open to the elements, with no walls or ceiling. And it's packed with technology too. You can measure your energy consumption, change your light settings and set cooling and heating temperatures of the space. Wrapped in salvaged weathering steel and up-cycled details, it raises the bar on stylish, conscious travel.

On arrival you’ll discover an elegant Spanish colonial-style home, sprawling out luxuriously across one level. Carrying on outside, through magnificent gardens, you’ll discover a contemporary two-storey pool house that brings this place right into the 21st century, with one of the most well-equipped gyms we ever did see. But the star of the show has to be the pool and gardens. With 360-degree mountain vistas, soaring palm trees, lush lawns, and hummingbirds busy going about their day, there is no better place to be. Start the day with a few lengths in the pool and soak in the spa, before settling down on one of the many sun decks to catch some rays. 

When it’s time to rustle up a meal, fire up the barbecue in the impressive outdoor dining area, while friends gather around the fire pit. Or let a private chef take over in the gourmet kitchen, complete with a wine fridge and built-in coffee maker to cover off all the essentials. And should you be tempted to stray from this desert retreat, you’ll find downtown Palm Springs a mere fifteen minutes drive away. Though why you’d ever want to leave is anyone’s guess.

Inside, the owners have gone to town with the otherworldly theme. In the kitchen, sleek metal kitchen countertops like the exterior of a rocket ship are paired back by warm brick walls. In the living room, egg shaped chairs sit opposite a honeycombed bookshelf, with a wood-and-metal floating spiral staircase that leads up to the loft bedroom. All three bedrooms have deluxe double beds, luxurious bathrooms with walk-in showers, and uninterrupted desert views. Joshua Tree National Park - and its miles of remote hiking routes - is at your fingertips, or if you're ready to re-enter reality, Downtown Palm Springs, with its glitzy shops and trendy restaurants, is a short drive away.

Go to bed after watching the spectacular sunset over the Pacific and wake up to the sound of the crashing waves at this jaw-dropping beachfront home in the surfside city of San Clemente. 

Contemporary coastal cool is the order of the day, with plenty of light wood, fresh blue furnishings and pristine white walls, all accentuated by the sunlight that pours in 342 days a year through large windows and retractable glass doors that look out over the ocean.

There's plenty of space for all the family, with large open living spaces, a stunning modern kitchen with eye-catching quartz worktops, a dedicated games room with a billiards table, plus a lovely office to make the idea of working while on holiday a little more palatable. 

Sleeping arrangements are taken care of across five spacious bedrooms. A large loft room packed with games and a console allows you to leave the kids to it as you enjoy a glass of something cold out on the covered terrace, or lay out on a lounger on the promontory pointing out to sea.

If the call of the ocean proves too much, you won't have to walk far to access Lost Winds beach below. With consistent surf, volleyball courts, and the opportunity to jog or cycle along the 2.6-mile beach trail, there's plenty on offer here. However, seasoned surfers might want to check out nearby breaks including Trestles, T Street and San Onofre. Lowers (at Trestles beach) is the best of the bunch and the home of high performance surfing. Sometimes it's best just to sit back and marvel at the pros.

After a day of adrenaline-pumping activity, cooking may well be the last thing on your mind. Handily, San Clemente is home to a wide array of restaurants serving everything from American comfort food, farm-to-table fare and creative Mexican classics washed down with a mescal.
