Those who see being described as 'meticulous' as something to be proud of will adore this three-storey home in San Diego's North Park neighbourhood. Every component has been thoughtfully considered, from the manicured gardens upon entrance and the colourful modern furniture in the living room, to the sleek kitchen bathed in natural light from the windows running along one wall. Even the exterior is pleasing to look at, the clean lines and black panelling making it stand out as a pillar of modernity in the locale. That being said, you won't feel as if you're in a showroom, thanks to the bountiful amount of space dedicated to relaxation — our favourite has to be the balcony on the first floor that puts you at tree-top level. The location is superb, too. Balboa Park — which holds San Diego Zoo — can be reached in under fifteen minutes on foot, while you can drive to Coronado Beach in ten minutes.

Just two blocks away from the beach and one block from the local boutiques and restaurants, this modern beach shack in San Diego provides guests with comfort and style in a great location. 

Recently remodelled, the kitchen is fully equipped and sparkly clean, while the L-shaped sofa in the living room is perfect for sinking into after a busy day. In the bedroom, guests will find a comfy bed with crisp linen and a vanity station which can easily be used as a desk for anyone in need of a home office. It’s a relatively small home, but you needn’t worry because there’s a wonderful outdoor area to enjoy too – equipped with a fire pit and surrounded by benches, it offers the perfect place to wind down. 

You can make the five-minute walk down to Ocean Beach to admire a magical sunset over the water, try your hand at surfing or simply stroll along the sand. Just two minutes away you'll find the local farmer's market, which sells artisanal produce every Wednesday. And, should you fancy an evening out in the city's traditional Gaslamp Quarter, you can drive there in just twelve minutes.

Well, at this oh-so-trendy apartment, you'll be immersed in the local community, located right across the street from Balboa Park and within arm's reach of the city's best cultural attractions. A sanctuary of calm, the living space features neutral tones with light wood flooring and comfy seating that makes for the perfect spot to kick back in after a day wandering the city. For those in town on business, there's a sleek desk space for powering through emails before heading out to explore. The neighbourhood of North Park is just a seven-minute walk away – it's great for flat-white sipping, beer tasting and boutique browsing. You’re even closer to the San Diego Zoo (a four-minute drive), and under fifteen minutes from the beach – placing you squarely in the middle of the action. While relaxing is a given when it would be rude not to make the most of the conveniences and amenities of San Diego when staying here. 

From biking along the boardwalk to boating, paddleboarding, sailing and swimming – it's safe to say you won't be short of things to do in this neck of the woods. With Mission Bay Aquatic Center located just steps away, and breakfast spots, coffee houses, pubs and restaurants all within close walking distance – you needn't lift so much as a finger when it comes to meal times. However, it's nice to have the option of cooking at the villa, should you wish to rustle up your own recipes too. 

Spread across three levels, watch the sailboats glide across the bay from anywhere in the home – whether that's from the top-floor balcony or down on the ground-level patio with lounge seating. Grab a drink and station yourself ready to watch the sunset over the bayfront. Bliss. We couldn't think of a dreamier way to start and end your days here than with a leisurely stroll along the bayside boardwalks. Or better still, make footprints in the sand as you listen to the waves crash before you on the beach itself.

Whether you're in town for work or play, location is key, and you couldn't be better placed here – just minutes from San Diego International Airport, Little Italy, Downtown Gaslamp, and the area's beaches. That said, there are plenty of wonderful cafes and historic neighbourhoods within walking distance, so you don't have to rely on four wheels all the time. And even when you're looking to travel further afield, it's a short stroll to the trolley stop, which can whisk you to the Gaslamp Quarter. Alternatively, take the COASTER train north to chic beach towns like Solana Beach, Encinitas and Carlsbad. Just a few footsteps take you straight to South Mission Beach, where you have amazing restaurants, bars, and markets at your fingertips. While the beach is hard to tear yourself away from, we'd spare some time to explore nearby golf courses, shops, and the good old Giant Dipper Roller Coaster at the Belmont Amusement Park – all just a short walk away. At the end of the day, you can return to your modern-Victorian home for a soak in the tub and a barbecue in the private courtyard.

If you’re a thrill-seeker, hop on one of the supplied beach cruisers and ride the half mile down the front to Belmont Park’s Big Dipper. As the sun starts to dip in the sky, de-sand the kids ahead of pre-dinner drinks on the outdoor sofa. There’s a barbecue, and the sleek kitchen is a pleasure to cook in, but if you’d rather somebody else did the work, then you’re within walking distance of Mission Beach’s colourful restaurants and cafes.

The fact that this beach cottage can also be found in the Mission Bay area makes the trip out to San Diego even more of a must. Ideal for a family stay or reunion of friends, think of this home as a portal to all things spectacular. The beach, for one, is a quick walk away, and so are a number of great restaurants and markets. Belmont Park is ready to keep you company for hours, but we especially recommend seeing it at night when all the lights make it feel extra magical. 

Spending time at home will likely result in burgers grilling on the barbecue outside – stay out there for long after, even as the sun begins to dip, to bask in the holiday feeling. The fireplace is great for colder nights where you can enjoy takeout around the fire before playing a round of Monopoly. Hit the boardwalk on balmier evenings and if you happen to end up with a taco in one hand and a frozen margarita in the other, well, we call that a good night.

The master suite is equipped with a kitchenette and plenty of communal spaces to hang out in, so catching up with friends and family indoors is an ideal way to pass an evening. Once the sun goes down, step out to explore the nearby restaurants, serving everything from sushi to tacos.

Seaside tranquillity is what you'll find at this lovely condo, located minutes away from Mission Bay. It's decked out in relaxing grey, white and turquoise hues that mirror the views of the waterfront – you'll hardly be able to tear your eyes away from the huge windows in the living room. It's quite compact, but this home is in a great location for active holidays on the South California coast. Take a paddle board to the surf – there’s one provided – or cycle along the peninsula using one of the free bikes. If you need a rest, take a moment to pause on the golden sands of South Mission Beach and soak up the rays. Back at home you can soak your muscles in the shared spa pool, before refuelling with a barbecue on the beach or a bite from one of nearby Mission Boulevard's hip cafés.

A New York-style loft with views that the Big Apple could only dream of, this glorious San Diego home offers style, sun and sea. On top of that, Balboa Park, San Diego Zoo, Hillcrest and Downtown are all within walking distance, so you really won't be running out of things to do and see. Of course, it only helps that Afternoon Delight is also a wonderful space to call home. This modern build can accommodate up to five guests comfortably, with one of them sleeping on the double pull-down bed in the second living space. The rest of the home has been beautifully furnished and boasts modern amenities and appliances for a relaxing stay.

Although this home sits directly opposite San Diego's famous Mission Bay, there are plenty of perks at the address to stop you from immediately fleeing to the boardwalks and beaches.

The swimming pool and adjoining spa are glorious spots in which to enjoy the SoCal summers, while there's also an alfresco table under a parasol as well as a cabana with an impressively equipped outdoor kitchen whenever you're in need of a little shade. Add to that a rooftop terrace that offers glorious waterfront views, as well as a couple of balconies for good measure, and you've got an address in which you barely need to head inside.

That being said, you won't be disappointed when you finally get around to doing just that. The large glass windows let in plenty of sunshine and also look out to views of leafy palm trees. We're big fans of the sleek kitchen and equally stylish bathrooms, including one with a steam shower.

There may come a point when you fancy seeing a little more of the local area and Mission Bay sits literally just around the corner, offering plentiful opportunities for swimming and watersports. The centre of San Diego and Balboa Park both take a quarter of an hour to reach in the car, too.
